Great phone - Nexus 6 General

So I just picked up a Nexus 6 and so far I am loving it.. But what bothers me is looking at all the negative stuff people are saying about it. Battery life, size, stuttering/ lag and so on. As of this message I have 2:10 screen on time with 56% battery left since I took it off the charger around 3 this morning..Clean ROM and Faux kernel is my setup. Coming from an M8 this is acceptable.. Front speakers are loud and clear.. Lag?? What lag.. In my eyes this phone is damn near perfect.. Does anybody feel the same way?

The only time I experience lag is with battery saver mode (obviously) and sometimes when I plug the phone in when the battery is at around 20% or less. The phone is extremely fast for me, and I love it so far. I normally get at least 3 hours of screen time, and it can last me 2 full days. One time I turned battery saver on when I had about 70% battery, and it lasted 5 hours of screen time. That was with me using GPS and data like crazy to get around New York (visited my bro in NY). I've compared the screen and speakers to a friends M8 and he likes my screen more. My speakers go louder but his are a bit clearer. The camera is amazing, especially with HDR!

I am with you. I am happy with size, performance, and battery. Awesome phone, in my opinion. Not sure how it could be better.

I think its a great phone also... Completely stock, no root... I can easily get 2 days on 1 charge and over 2 hours on screen time. Real world performance is more important to me then how long the screen is on....

Some say they get stutter on unlock and recents on custom kernels.

No complaints here, love it and happy with the size. No issues thus far from my usage.

This IS a big phone. I thought the Note 3 was big when I had it but this one takes the cake..lol

I need to try stock for a while. The first thing I did was start flashing custom stuff. Didn't even give ole google a chance.

I'd say that depends on the kernel. Lean and Franco never get me any stutter on unlock, personally.

I'm on leankernel and it stutters every unlock, no issue with recent though.

I think the battery life is awesome on this phone. Currently at 75% after 12 hrs off charge & 1.5 hrs on screen. Usually, by the time I put it back on charge at 11pm, I'm at about 25% & 5.5-6hrs on screen. Can't complain about that.

That's my main issue on every custom kernel I've tried. They can be smoother than stock kernel in other areas, but all exhibit that damn unlock stutter.

No, I'm using cm12 & elementalx. But there's no real difference from stock for me as far as battery. I ran it bone stock for 3 weeks.

I've had the phone for almost 2 weeks now and am very happy with the performance of the phone. The phone is large and takes getting used to, but now every other phone seems like a toy compared to the nexus 6. I'm rooted on stock 5.0.1. Battery life is 4-5 on screen time, around 15-17 hours off the charger. Coming from a s4, camera is a big let down and that's about the only gripe I have with the Nexus 6. Overall still the best phone I've had in terms of the Android experience. Looking forward to future updates.

Coming from the Verizon Note 3 all I miss is the camera. The screen is not as good as the Note 4 but its not bad either. This is my first nexus device. The big screen and stock Android is what made me choose this device over the Note 4. I haven't encountered any issues. Loving the phone and all the Roms available. Its a flashaholics dream ☺

Quick question... OK.. This is my first Nexus device but I've been around since the froyo days with my Vibrant but I'm confused with the ROM choices... Aosp based and stock lollipop.. I thought stock android was Aosp. Just got the phone Monday so I really haven't had time to try out all the Roms seeing that is so many to choose from.

I'm happy with mine too. I was unsure about stepping up to a phone this large, but I've come to love the larger screen. I fractured my left wrist in October and even with the Nexus 5 certain operations proved difficult to complete one handed when it becomes mandatory. I knew going in this would be a two handed phone and I've adapted just fine. My only real complaint is ambient display needs work. I really like the concept, but after the first day I managed to place calls, perform searches and open web sites all without taking it out of my pocket. I don't particularly care for the placement of the buttons and the gradually increasing volume is a bit annoying. Battery life has been better than my Nexus 5 and worlds ahead of my 4. I love the speakers. The more serious complaints I've read I haven't personally experienced.

Best phone I've owned hands down.

Thank You For Axura!

Just want to give thanks for this rom to whomever put it together. Master? Not sure I'm not to involved with the roms usually. But my Vibrant is an entirely different phone now. Seems to be using the hardware now to its potential. I can't get over how smooth the phone is. No more hitching or lag when you scroll around the screens. My programs all work better now. Stitcher Radio now loads up quicker. Doesn't reset or stop on its own. One little thing is that the orientation seems to be off. When I tilt the phone horizontally for example the image doesn't change over. Regardless, this is a small thing compared to the overall improvement of the device. I'm a newbie to flashing roms but now can't wait for the next one!

lol..thanks once again! I thought it was google syncing! Working fine now.
@azure100. Last night I went to plug in the phone for charging before going to bed. About 10pm. The phone read 71% battery. Kinda shook my head in disbelief. Especially since I get up at 5am! I didn't have my phone on a charger all day but I did have it USB'd to my laptop for a total of about 30mins moving some files and playing around. I'm sure it picked up some charge there? Still, it seemed like a lot of battery life left for that time of day. Usually I make it until about 8pm before the phone is fully out of juice. I'll keep a eye on it today. I won't hook it up to any charger or pc and report back.
Ok so I got three hours before it changed from 100 percent. Battery on this Rom is really good

I wake up at 6 a.m. and battery will last me until around 11 p.m. That is the longest I have let it run without recharging. Normal use. Ill have about 25-30% bat level at that time. I think this is pretty awesome. What I mean by normal use is I am making a phone calls and just checking email. No connecting to wifi etc.. Obviously there will be more battery drain then.
Charging seems to take a while. Even from the wall it just feels to charge slow. But not snail pace or anything. The battery is def lasting longer than before I flashed it.
I've been going back and forth between Axura2.2.5.9 and NeroV3 lol. To me, these ROM are both awesome. It really comes down to customization preferences and how each specific ROM reacts to your individual Vibrant. For my Vibrant, the battery is a little bit better on NeroV3. GPS is somewhat comparable. As a matter of fact, I've been manually customizing my Vibrant by taking bits and pieces of what I like from the Axura ROM and incorporating onto my NeroV3 core.
BTW: Is it just me or others simply do not care?????? In Axura2.2.5.9, the audible tone is not working on the dial pad even when the option is enabled in settings.

Ok. Two days ago I put a newly charged battery in at 3pm. It didn't fully die until after 10pm last night! So over 31 hours on one charge. Granted, Ive been sick so the phone hasn't been used as much. Phone calls. Email but no games, gps or anything like that. WiFi, Bluetooth on. Still, even with light use, the most I was getting is 15 hours thats it. So this rom looks real good for battery
Also want to throw a quick thanks out. I have really started enjoying this phone more than struggling with it. I might even hang onto it for a bit.

I have been on Axura for over a week now and im consistently averaging 13/14 hours on a full battery charge with.moderate use. My current charge is in its 23 rd hour.
Im reluctant to flash any other rom coz I like this one so much but I still want to flash lol

Nexus 6 very 'stuttery' & weak battery compared to my HTC One M8

So I just got the Nexus 6 on Thursday and have been using it for the past 4 days. I have everything set up the way I like it but I find the performance to be pretty sub-par. I'm coming from the HTC One M8 which was a buttery smooth device so that's what I'm comparing it to. So far, I find basic tasks to be slower and less smooth that the M8...Basic things like swiping left to the Google Now page have severe stutter and opening the app switcher has significant lag. Also, the battery seems to be much weaker than the M8. Yesterday I took the N6 off the charger at 8 am and had to recharge it TWICE just to get through the day (granted, this was a heavy usage and screen on-time day but I've never had to do that before with the M8).
I've read about encryption slowing down the device significantly but I'm wondering if that would be the cause of some of the issues I'm having. If so, do you people who have decrypted think it's worth it? Any M8 users have similar (or contrary) experiences with the N6 so far? I was really excited to get this device but so far it's been somewhat of a letdown. I'm hoping Google fixes many of these issues in a software update but I know that's wishful thinking on my part.
I would have to agree that it has some stutter, especially compared to my Nexus 5 on lollipop. That thing is butter.
Well its the first build of lolipop for Shamu so I hope Google fixes the bugs and irons out battery issues. I think everyone's battery life will vary but software should be able to fix this considering it has a huge battery.

I actually have the opposite experience. My N5 had a bit of stutter that I don't have on the N6. Also, the battery life is *immensely* better on the N6 than N5 (I don't have an M8 to compare, but I'm looking at probably double what I had on the N5).
Yesterday I unplugged the phone at 12:30 (it was a rough Saturday night) and used it somewhat-heavily throughout the day (3 hours of screen on-time), and it was at 55% when I put it back on the charger at around 11:30pm.

I REALLY hope that this is true. With the big deal made about "Project Volta" I was expecting big things from the battery life on this phone. I've been very disappointed so far. As for performance, they should have made encryption optional if that is, in fact, what's killing performance. A top of the line device in 2014 shouldn't have lag when swiping between homescreens....that's just ridiculous IMO.

Why would Nova, with more animations, be smoother than the stock Google Now Launcher? Unless you have animations disabled? And do you have Google Now on the left most screen or is that disabled? I guess I should also mention I used the Google Now Launcher with my M8 and that had no lag so that shouldn't be the issue.

I think it's got to do with the launcher as well. I have Nova and it's super smooth. Unlike the official Google Now launcher that's stuttery.
Battery life is just ok. Probably it will improve after few cycles.

I'm not sure what you have going or what you are doing with your phone, but I haven't found any of that to be true for mine so far. Granted, I've only had it 2 days now but I've found its as smooth as my n5 with kitkat, and battery has been better than the n5. I've never had the m8 so I don't know much about it, I know in tests it generally won most if not all the battery life tests so it's a high standard. I currently have 2 hours 20 mins of screen on time with 43% left, that's with gmail, Fit, calendar, chrome, music, and photos all synced. Also have dropbox set to auto upload pictures, and I have always on OK Google. Screen is set at about 75% brightness.
All I can say is read the battery life thread and make your decision.

If I could get 5+ hrs of screen on time I would be satisfied but I'm not getting anywhere close to that. I have the following services syncing:
2 Google accounts and their associated services
Chrome
Photos
Facebook
Dropbox (auto photo upload)
Fenix (for Twitter)
Press (RSS reader)
Weather app
That's really it.
Whatever. Go use an LG G3 for a few months, and then tell me about how the Nexus 6 "stutters".
I'm easily getting 5 hours SOT and around 18 hours overall with my N6. I am able to get this consistently. I also don't experience any stuttering. I have encryption disabled though.

I came from the M8 as well and while I do notice the occasional stutter on the N6, the overall experience is still awesome. I spent some time with the M8 again yesterday to help my wife set it up and I don't miss it at all.
In regards to the battery, the N6 has been right on par with the M8 in my experience. I got through a day and half with a little over 4 hours of SOT this weekend. I don't know what you're doing that requires you to charge it twice a day, but something's not right.

I don't game on my phone. Ever. I watch the occasional YouTube video but not more than 15 mins. And my brightness is always around 50% with adaptive brightness turned on. Pretty much the opposite of everything you just said and if that were the case I'd be smart enough not to question the battery life.
I think the stuttery stuff you're seeing is Lollipop rather than a particular phone. I felt the same way when my Nexus 5 got updated. I think all the pointless animations Google is adding causes what appears to be stutter. When I compared my N5 to the N6 both phones act the same though the Nexus 5 performs every action a split second faster than even an un-encrypted Nexus 6. I think that's because of the huge screen resolution on the Nexus 6. Both phones seem equal in terms of smoothness or rather lack of smoothness.
I have used the Nexus 6 encrypted and un-encrypted and noticed no difference. I left it off just in case there is a difference that I am not perceiving and may benefit me in some situation.
As for battery life my Nexus 6 gets twice as much screen on time as my Nexus 5 (Nexus 5 screen time went down with Lollipop). I get around 4.5-5 hours SOT now and the Nexus 5 on Lollipop was hitting about 2.5 after the Lollipop update. My brightness is 3/4 of the way up on Adaptive with the Nexus 6.
I think Google turned Project Butter into Project Stutter

Terrible battery life.

Hey everyone. Without further a do, I am saying that my N4 battery suuuuucks really bad. Started on stock rom, flashed Chroma w/ latest franco kernel. Nope. Still lots of drain (slightly better overall, but nothibg major). Then flashed hells doctor kernel. Nope. Lots of drain when screen is on, but stable with screen off.
Honestly, I've seen people getting 6h on screen time. And everyone says that these kernels and rom can increase battery life by a margin, while mine stays the same.
Oh and there is a thing. Ive recently broke my stock charger and now using apple's ipad charger. Mine was 1.2 A and the one from apple is 1 A. Is this is an issue we are looking for?
Or its just a 2years old battery running out of its life cycles...?
Thank you!

Nexus 4 battere sucks really no matter what you plus your network coverage may impact vastly on performance. Anyway given the battery is 2 years old, I would say it's gone even if it says it's good but again it depends on your usage like continuous tethering or other heavy activity that makes the phone run hot

Well my usage can be heavy surfing on FB, Instagram and definetely FB messenger. I often use chrome and mainly everything is done under Wifi.
According to my screenshots, you cannclearly see that shes (battery) is ok when screen is off, no drain and etc. As soon I start using it it drains A LOT. Almost 90° angle on diagram It's crazy.
Plot twist: To prevent spam on the XDA forums, ALL new users prevented from posting outside links in their messages.
Yes, i have a new battery which was working well, but I flashed factory image 5.1.1 xxx47v and the batt life is really horrible now.
It's easy to replace the battery, I recommend taking out the sim card tray before taking the back off though.
I haven't been on here for a long time, whats the best rom, for batt life. I'm willing to go back to kit kat if I have to .
Also note that some of the screenshots with 6+ hours of SOT the user has handicapped their devices (disable 2 cores, lower max cpu/gpu frequency, etc).

Yes, I've seen people underlocking, undervolting etc. But that's not what I am planning to do with mine N4. Neither I'm hoping to have 6 hours SOT. 4 would be SUPER COOL. And that seems impossible for my device

Thinking about purchasing but worried about battery... your opinions?

I am considering purchasing a moto x pure edition because it can move to any carrier. This is the main reason I was considering this phone. The second and equally important reason is battery life. My current phone is a galaxy s4 active. The battery doesn't get me through the day at work (10 hours) with moderate use (4 hours screen time). This has annoyed me greatly. Unfortunately, I cannot have it charging at work so the phone needs to make it with ease through the day. I do not have wifi available so all activity will be through 4glte with 3/5 signal. I realize one of the complaints with the phone is battery life. My question is, if I root/unlock bl (which I do with every device), are there kernels that anyone here is running that can undervolt and get me that all day battery life out of this thing? I really don't want to buy it and be back in the same boat again. Unfortunately, the gs4a i had was never boot loader unlocked so i'm stuck on crappy touchwiz with stock kernel. It performs fine but battery life stinks. If I buy this phone, will i be dissapointed? Thanks to everyone for your responses.

You shouldn't have any problem hitting 4hrs SOT in 10 hours off the charger. I never have to charge this thing at work. I leave the house at 5am and don't plug it in until about 9pm.

I just got my moto x pure two days ago. I came from using an S4 active which I still have. The turbo charing helps with the moto x. I'm still getting use to setting up my moto x the way I want it. You learn from trial and error. The main thing for me is that I want to make sure I can return to stock regardless of what happens to my phone.

You shouldn't have any problem hitting 4hrs SOT in 10 hours off the charger. I never have to charge this thing at work. I leave the house at 5am and don't plug it in until about 9pm.

Thanks so much for the reply! This is exactly the info I'm looking for. Some questions though, how much are you on in it and how much are you using wifi during that time? Also, are you on a custom kernel/rom?

The charger is a good point at home but I can't have it at work, unfortunately.

I range from 3-5 hours of screen on time depending on my usage. If I'm at the 3 hr end, then I usually make it off the charger from 5am-9pm range with a bit of life left. If I'm at the 5 hr end I'll have to charge a decent amount sooner (maybe 5am-6pm) but it's still a full day's use. I've run completely stock and I've tried a few different Roms and Kernels...I've never seen a huge difference in battery life though.
5 hs.of SOT, 12 hs without a charger ( not in the first week of use) you need a minimal of 5 charge/discharge cycles
Its a excellent phone !! (sorry for my english)

This is good to know but I will be purchasing it used so the cycles will be there already.

Think about this advice if you change the ROM.

I just got my Moto XPE too. Battery life was one of my biggest concerns. I came from a moto e (that little thing had ridiculous battery life). I was worried because of all the complaints of short battery life but I can tell you this:
When I first used the phone (no root, mods, out anything) I got around 4 hours sot pretty easily. That's a little short for me but it isn't terrible. The phone got really warm though and I felt as if it was unoptimized and the CPU was doing more work than it needed to.
I proceeded to void my warranty and unlock the bootloader. First I did a little research on these big.LITTLE cpus then i used a (well pretty much the only established one) custom kernel, Frankenclark, to do a little tweaking.
All I did was turn touchboost off and make the lowest CPU frequency one step lower, as well as turning hotplug to where the screen on minimum CPU count is 1. There was basically no loss in performance and it doesn't even get as much as warm now. I can't give you stats on the long term battery life yet but in the time that I wrote this I only lost 2% ( I type slow ).
Before both the big and LITTLE CPU clusters were showing on and pretty much going crazy all the time. Now the big cluster is hardly ever on. The phone by default has touchboost set to turn on cpu1 (which is one of 2 cores in the big cluster) every time you touch the screen, which is very wasteful. (At least that's how it was with this kernel, I'm pretty sure stock did the same thing) I'm currently running TruPureX ROM (stock debloated) but I doubt it gives any battery life improvements. Motorola made a good stock rom. I really like this phone. Good luck with your purchase! PS the Nexus 6p has generally better battery life if you can live with no sdcard and the steeper price. The 6p can also move between carriers as the XPE can. Verizon included which is what I use.
[Edit]
When you put this thing down, you can expect to pick it back up with the same battery % left. Standby is ridiculous, which is nice.
^^Does your screen on setting of 1 cpu stick? On mine with kernel editor it reverts back to 2 after a reboot.

I think I remember it's a bug where it will stick if the screen is on while kernel adiutor is restoring the settings but it will revert to 2 cores if the screen is off while it's restoring. Don't quote me on it but I think that's what it was.

If I set it 1 6 1 (min screen on cores: 1, max cores : 6, max screen off cores 1), the phone will reboot if I don't allow kernel auditor to apply the settings while screen is still on (after a reboot). That is, after phone reboots, if screen goes blank, when I hit the power button, phone will reboot on its own.
Probably not a major issue considering I only reboot about once every week or two. I can make sure I watch the cycle and unlock it, wait for everything to settle, then turn off the screen.
Guess what I just got? someone on eBay was selling the 64gb for 300 bucks in mint condition! Just can't beat it. Thanks to everyone for info and suggestions along the way. Any recommendations on cases and screen protectors? I've always like seidio for cases and whatever is highly rated on @maz0n for screen protectors but any advice would be appreciated!
I have seidio case and holster, I think they only sell one for it, and I love it.

Ultimately I wound up getting a vena vskin that's see through. I really love it. Only problem is the back is curved life the phone so using it on a table with one hand swiping for SwiftKey makes it spin.

Poor battery life - just the phone, or something else?

Hello,
My Nexus 6P, albeit a great phone, is starting to get a little slow and the battery life has suffered. My memory usage isn't high, around 2GB. I close all apps after using them. I haven't even used close to half of my 64GB storage.
I am a very heavy phone user, and I am having to recharge my 6P more than once every day. I cannot sustainably use max screen brightness as it drains the battery too quickly, a shame because maximum brightness on this phone is so beautiful!
From some testing, it is taking 2 minutes and 3 seconds to drop 1% in battery life at maximum screen brightness while watching YouTube. Round to two minutes, multiply by 100, and that gives you 200 minutes. 3 hours and 20 minutes.. that is silly, plus the battery drops off faster as the percentage decreases (I tested at 94%).
Realistically, I can get 2.5-3 hours on this phone at maximum brightness - is there something wrong, or is this just the phone? While writing this post in 5 minutes, I dropped another 3%...
It should be pretty obvious that a 2k screen at maximum (!) brightness can drain the battery faster.

Yes, but Techradar's test of a 90 minute video with adaptive brightness OFF (like me) takes battery down to 75%. That's 25% down in 1.5 hours, meaning the battery life of their test model would be 6 hours video playback, more than double what I get.
What gives?
Lower the brightness.

You're taking 1 instance of a test and multiplying it as it the variables within that instance will remain the same. Batteries drain faster the more they are used in an instance because of the heat. This type of test can be done with a flashlight. Turn it on for an extended period of time and then turn it off for a few seconds. Turn it on again and the brightness will be at max (for the batteries' capacity at the time), after about 5 seconds, the light will dim suddenly.
Same thing happens in phones. Manage your brightness.

So essentially, this is just the battery life of the 6P?
Seems a little weird to give a phone such a beautiful display but we are unable to use it to its full extent because it won't last.

I can't say that, but I can say there's no device that we can expect to just use that way. All devices (even outside of smartphones) are like that. If it runs on a battery expect not to be able to use it to its full capabilities for an extended period of time.
Cars are the same way. If you run it at max speed all the time (if there were no laws), you'll run out of gas extremely quickly, compared to 65mph. Same concept applies here. It sucks but that's the way it is.

The battery of this phone is poor, no doubt in that. However what I found is that my previous phone (which I had to RMA) lasted much longer than the current one. Around 1-1.5-2(barely)hr more SOT. Don't know how this could happen.
Yeah, 6P is not what I expected it to be.

Not saying you are wrong, but I feel like some say that about every phone. I will have to wait and see when mine gets here.
When the Note 5 came out there were so many people saying how terrible it was with battery life. Almost turned me away from getting it. Finally decided to take the plunge and guess what? It's pretty much the same as all the other phones I have had. The phone don't suck, our usage changes based on the device we have. I use my Note 5 more than I did my Note 4, battery still lasts me all day but needs to be charged about an hour after I get home. Note 4 made it until bedtime but I had a company phone to use all day.
I'm hoping the 6P can handle me all day. No pen to use so it should be fine.

I don't get why you're getting the 6P if you already have the Note 5. Like having two or more phones uh?
I got the 6P in place of the Note 5. I had a Note 4 before (it was defective I believe), it had terrible battery life (very rarely 4.5 to 5 hours SOT) and heats up to 75C very easily. Sure the 6P is cheaper, but I could've gotten the Note 5 if I wanted because this device is going to be there for at least 2 years. The thought of I can't bear anymore of TouchWiz was the only reason I got 6P. I thought the Note 5 would heat similarly and that 6P was better overall. But now I think I'm wrong, the Note 5 is a slightly better phone.
My 6P heats way too much (though not as much as my Note 4 did). Battery not upto expectation. Inconsistent camera (exposure problems). Throttling issues.

I actually don't mind touchwiz especially now that they have trimmed most of the fat and you can theme it now. Sad I'll miss out on AOSP/CM on it but I guess that's what the Nexus line is for. As far as the 6P being worse than the Note 5, I think it's based on usage patterns. The Note 5 has it's own slew of issues, radio especially for me, it does tend to heat up but not as bad as some other phones. Slippery as hell OMG!!! And that all glass thing is just absolutely nightmarish! It is still a fantastic device though and I will miss it greatly.
I'm getting it because of Project Fi. It will be cheaper for my wife and I compared to what we pay now for T-Mobile. We will be saving just over $60. That's date night once a month right there, Lol. I am actually getting rid of my Note 5, and unfortunately earlier today I dropped it on the road without a case on!!!!!!!!!!!:crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:
I cried....no shame there....my own damn fault too.

Maaan.. You could've just used a case! :
You do know that the 6P bends very easily without a case right (I got to know after I bought the device).
So you're getting the 6P as a replacement to your Note 5? I don't get why I see many people using the 6P after the Note 5. Is the 6P actually better?
Do let me know about your thoughts when you get your phone.
I've found that since a security patch update around February that my phones battery drops so much quicker. I used to be able to get 5 hours sot. I've seen a few people post on this issue and with it being a software issue I'm becoming extremely frustrated with android. I'm ashamed to say I'm considering selling the 6p and getting an Iphone

Sometimes I go bare with it because I'm always "careful" lol. I plan on having a case for the 6P for sure. I'll probably go bare off and on once I get used to the device and become comfortable.

No shame there. Seems like something is staying awake when it should be dozing. I'm assuming it's not rooted right?
