[Q] Possible Write Protection Situation? Can't Install Nothing.. Need Help! - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My friend just gave me a Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 and he told me that it has a problem and may I can fix.
I've tried everything I know but there is no any progress so far.
Here is the problem;
1. Device is not booting. Hanging out at the first logo (Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505)..
2. I thought it's a simple problem.. I can make factory reset and it may work.
3. I entered recovery and I've seen this;

}
4. The problem seems big than I thought. I thought maybe it may work if I put original firmware. Downloaded from sammobile and nothing changed. Then I decided to install a recovery.
5. I choose TWRP and installed it with these settings. Result on computer;
Result on Phone;
6. And tried to enter recovery, result was successful !!
7. Then Enter 'Advanced' > 'Terminal Command'
8. I just checked 'whoami' on terminal;
9. I can delete everything if I'm root right? So let's try.. 'ls' and get list..
10. Let's delete etc and efs folders. I have the power!
11. Let's reboot device, enter recovery again.. and let's see if I'm successfully deleted directories;
As you can see, device is always saying that Failed to mount /efs (no such file or directory) and more. I can only install recovery. And I can't delete or change anything else. Neither I can't install new firmware.
Do you have any idea? What is this? I want to fix this stupid situation.
I just tried to explain the situation with photos. Hope it wasn't boring.
Thank you for reading.

Have you tried with Kies?
Or maybe trying to flash a custom ROM?
Did you ask if he did something to cause this?
Edit: I once had an SD card which was broken. I could create/copy and delete stuff but as soon as I removed the SD from any device it was connected to, everything was back to it's previous state (deleted files were back and copied stuff was gone). I tried formatting but same thing happened.
Maybe something is wrong with the internal storage.
Try to convert to another file system format.

I've tried with Kies 2.6 and Kies 3..
Kies 3 says 'unsupported device'
Kies 2.6 just waiting waiting and nothing..
I couldn't put any files to internal storage.. Also it doesn't recognize any sd card.
I don't know how to change the file system?

I mean to ext4 or f2fs, or whatever.
I don't know how to do it either. I never had the need to do it. I don't even know if you can in this situation, but you could try. There should be several guides on the internet on how to do it. Just google it.
Does a pc recognize the phone? Have you tried pushing something to it via adb?

Sure it's recognize.. I'm able to install recovery with Odin.
But when you did turn-off and turn-on, everything is reversing.. Like never installed.

So it's basically exactly like the issue that I described about my broken SD card.
I think it may be an internal storage problem. Maybe it's broken. I don't see why or how something would trigger a write protection.

If the internal storage is dead then I don't think there is much you can do. You could try taking it to specialized service

What I learned about upgrading to a 16GB SD Card

What To Know When Getting a Bigger SD Card I found out the hard way after getting a 16GB PNY Class 10 card for my x10. I had my backups and all that. I copied from the old card to the new one. Then things began acting odd. process.android.media error was really bothering me on startup. So I looked around and found a few suggestions, like clear data drom download manager and media storage. These didnt help at all. I got to looking around under the app management, because I noticed a few app shortcuts were gone. So it was a step in the right direction. I clicked the on SD card tab, started scrolling and said well the last app I moved was this... so I clicked it and went to move it back to the internal memory. It errored out and said something to the effect it was not installed. I went on a witch hunt from that point forward. Apparently Gingerbread will let you know something is amiss. It will have a generic icon and or a checkmark next to the app. I figured thus far the ones with a checkmark could be moved, the ones with a generic icon, were missing and therefore I had to click on each one and uninstall. After doing this all was well. As I really didnt want to move every app back to the internal storage, besides I would have ran out of room too.
The first mistake I realized I made was that, I should have busted out the sd card reader. I was doing this at my mothers and said well its easier. No... Because of the swapping and therefore powercycling the x10. The os scanned or tried to load some apps. There is where it all started going downhill. I thought well I am staying on the same rom, whats the harm.
Important steps / tips I learned.
1. Use a card reader, to transfer all files from old to new card. This also helps with making sure you have a backup too.
2. Consider uninstalling all apps from sdcard, or move them. Depending on situation. I use Titanium Backup & My BackUp Root, so I opt for uninstalling them.
3. Restore your uninstalled apps, or move them back afterwards.
4. Find an app or script to verify all apps are installed correctly? (Dont know if it exists) Otherwise launch each one or verify there are no missing icons or checkmarks present.
Now on to the new adventure of partitioning. I have came across some tips here and there. None really all that dramatic. I am still looking for a guide/line for setting up more than 2 partitions. This is how I have my desktop, but android is a little different. So far I have learned that if you use a Mac, you should bootcamp, dualboot, VM, or boot a linux cd for partitioning. I have not found the right app or terminal commands to make it easier to do. Perhaps I need a better rom. I am fairly happy with zmodv3 hotfix 3. I also think the unlocked bootloader is a blessing and a curse (kernel hell). I still like the CM based ROMS, but am thoroughly turned off by all this MIUI stuff. I may own a Mac, but think iphones are shaat.

Suggestions and links are welcome. Please no flaming or bashing about what I have wrote. We all know about opinions.... Besides I have to sart posting sooner or later.
After some more tinkering 11/11/11- I have discovered that there is an issue with xrec 0.3gb ready, on zmod hotfix3. If you use xrec to make a full backup after reboot there is that error again. This can be resolved by clearing market and storage data. It works fine via CWM 4or5 recovery.
Thanks from this, I'm about to order a newer card off eBay.

I just got myself a new card yesterday and I just backed up using titanium, then copied everything to the new card, then do a fresh install of my rom (CM nightly).

There are a few guides on that. Use windows or a linux based boot cd. Make 2 partitions and they must be primary fat32 (safest). It depends on the phone really. Have not used a 32GB, allot say it works fine and some out there say no. If you need exact walkthru just google it.

I am not very happy with my rom right now, will be changing. But that is a good Idea to reinstall the rom. I just didnt want to wipe everything for a rom Im not real happy with. I had to get a bigger card to make a backup with. The shuffling from x10 to desktop was really bothersome.
can the
can the x10 go upto 32gb?

[Q] Edited BUILD.PROP, now missing system folder, S4 won't boot - Black screen

***TLDR: I edited build.prop, and now it looks like my /system/ folder has been deleted, phone won't boot. Will I be able to save my phone? or do I have to re flash it and start from scratch?
I was trying to get a patched Google Wallet working on my rooted S4 I9505OXAAMDE, and supposedly the app wouldn't open on most devices, so I changed some device details in the build.prop file in the /system folder.
The only things I changed are these values:
ro.product.model=GT-I9505
ro.product.name=jfltexx
ro.product.device=jflte
to
ro.product.model=Galaxy Nexus
ro.product.name=yakju
ro.product.device=maguro
I did this on the S4 with a text editor (after changing the system folder to being RW instead of RO), and then I rebooted my S4. It gets up to the point where it says "Samsung Galaxy S4 i9505....", then goes to a black screen and just hangs there. At this point I can't do anything. I can't turn the phone off then on again with the power button, nothing shows up on the screen. The only response I can get is that the blue notification LED turns on for a bit after I press some buttons.
After that, I put the phone in recovery mode (using Phil's Touch Recovery mod, or something by that name), and tried to ADB pull the my backup build.prop (called build.prop.bak) from the system folder; adb tells me "remote object does not exist". I then tried pulling a copy i put in the /sdcard/ folder, and that worked. So I had the proper build.prop on my pc (with the i9505 settings), and i then pushed it to /system/build.prop. All should have been good at that point, but when I try to boot I get the same problem.
I then installed a recovery file manager http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646108 and had a look around in that. According to it there were only 2 things in the /system/ folder; an empty folder called "bin" and the build.prop that I pushed there earlier. From what I remember when I originally edited the build.prop file, there were heaps of folders and files in /system/.
So it seems like something, for some reason deleted my /system/ folder Now I'm guessing I can just flash the stock firmware again (got that downloading now), but I don't want to lose all my apps and such. Is it possible to keep my old setup after flashing? (I don't plan on wiping/resetting anything during the flash)
I also read somewhere that maybe i have to mount/remount (i have no idea) the system folder, and then it might appear again, but I have no clue honestly.
Anything I can do? I really don't want to start with a completely fresh phone, I wanna keep my old setup.
Thanks
EDIT: I tried running "adb remount", and it says "remount failed: success" I don't know what that means, but I was hoping that the /system/ folder isn't lost, that it was just unmounted at some point and hidden in a different location.
Any ideas?

Yep, about to flash stock firmware now, out of options. I just hope it doesn't delete stuff.
Re flashing fixed it, and i didn't lose any files. Just a couple of messed up settings etc, easy to fix. Gotta re-root it though.

You better have an efs backup if youre gonna do more similar advnetures. Triangle Away doesn't work on S4 yet so Samsung wont fix the phone for you if you screw it up without major $$$.

Factory reset led to boot loop?

I'm on an s5 neo, rooted but using the same software it came with.
I decided to try a factory reset, as I had done a few things I can't undo, like removing mtp application, with a root app remover whose restore function doesn't work on this device.
I was also thinking, that instead of personalizing everything, and downloading everything, and then debloating, I thought I'd start fresh and then debloat first.
Thank *god*I had gotten brave enough to download and install twrp and make a backup, that back up is where I am coming to you from now.
I used the twrp recommended wipe for the reset, not custom wipe. Worked fine. Powered back on. All looked well until I came across a screen that said "just a sec..." For an extremely long time, like 10 minutes...
Why wouldn't it fully turn on, any ideas? As of now I can't factory reset ever again.... :/ and I'd like to be able to.
I hasn't disabled anything crazy and could reboot normally before I tried the wipe. I just don't get what went wrong?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
I cant even start off with a new rom I don't think, they're all made for the 903m or 903f versions of this phone, and I'm on the international 903w. I'm guessing some thing significant is different or else it would just be called the 903.

Well, with a bootloop you can go to recovery and recipe, then wipe data then go to advanced options in twrp and delete the Android folder in both internal and external and that should fix the issue
Recipe? I should proof read this stuff before I post it. It should have said reset, not recipe
Like, as in deleting the "system" folder, should I have wiped that too?
Or would that totally erase this current android version? And I'd be even more stuck?

No, go to advanced options, file manager, then to either storage, touch the Android folder, hit the check mark in the lower right, select delete, swipe to confirm. Do this with both storages. It's not the system folder and doesn't contain anything that isn't rebuilt upon boot. But it does contain stuff from your previous install that is known to cause bootloops when going from an Android version to another. Nothing to worry about when you delete those folders. It's been the source of tons of bootloops for me
So, the android folder, in my case, I think I've only got the one internal storage path. I'd have to double check but I'm pretty sure. I have technically for some reason a bunch of storages called "USB drive". But I think they're all empty. And I think sd card and emulated lead to the same place. Its a weird setup lol
I just took a screen shot of it, I'll add it in here

Unable to create new folders or save anything to the internal memory

So ill try to put all the other information that's important here.
I tried flashing the Stock rom back to this phone through TWRP and I feel like I've flashed it about 8 times now. It comes up normally and I can go through the setup wizard and when I hit the home screen I tired getting Adaway. When I tried to download the apk to my phone and I try to choose a save location it keeps saying that I can't find a save location. Then I tried opening up the file manager and tried creating a new folder it says that the operation cant be performed. I have plenty of storage available on my 6T and I cant see what I'm doing wrong. I've flashed and reflashed both TWPR and the Stock ROM both Beta and official and I still run into the same issue. Is anyone able to lend a hand? Thank you in advance!
Edit: Fixed it!

Did I lose all my pictures? Urgent help please

Hello everyone I have a Mi9T non pro. I tried to install a custom rom, Resurrection Remix.
Long story short it didn't work so I had to flash back the stock MIUI.
But the problem is nothing is showing up ie Images even though I never select to wipe my internal storage.
Now all of the files on my phone have random garbled text however it shows that my phone only has 30 gb there so there is something taking up the space?
Ive attached screenshots of what its like. Please help all of my photos were on there.
is it because I didnt flash DFE?

Always backup...
They may be recoverable but if so it will be a bloody mess. The indexing system is gone.
They will exist only as jpeg files, the exif files are separate and juxtaposed in the sea of data.
That's best case...
Don't boot that phone until you're ready to attempt a recovery as it may overwrite more of what's is left if there's anything left.
Personally I would have written them off already... for the sake of my sanity.
Hello, thank you.
I do accept that my photos are virtually certain to be gone as a result of my own stupidity and I will never attempt to mess with my phone again.
That being said how would I attempt a recovery?

Is it rooted now? There are apps out there for that especially if it's already rooted.
Either way I don't have the expertist or experience doing that to guide you. There are members here that do.
I had a flash card with about 100 RAWs from a shoot on it that got corrupted.
Even though I was able to recover them, in the end I just low level formatted the whole mess to get it out of my face. Without the exif files their value to me was greatly deminished. The more files, the greater the mess and the task.
You can pull them up by file type but imagine how many jpegs you have on that phone... you start to get the idea.
More than likely you would need to reconstruct the shooting date, image name, etc from memory for the recovered jpegs. A literal jigsaw puzzle of disjointed data.

When changing the ROM, FORMATTING Data is a must (not even just Wipe). There are many guides out there clearly stating that
Obviously, that would wipe Internal memory, hence one must transfer docs/pictures to PC before formatting Data
Now the same. Transfer what was left of your photos (if you think you will ever try to recover them?!) and Format Data - otherwise you will have all sorts of problems with your 'new' MIUI

When you Format Data it will wipe Internal memory, too
Please read, there are general guides how to change ROMs, about the difference between Formatting and wiping, why Formatting Data is required, etc, etc
