[Q] moving to samsung - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello, im looking to get a note 3 on ebay and it seems there all running jelly bean. I would like to know what is the best option for me. I would like root access as I was using android-wifi-tither on my old Motorola.
-should I do the ota update to kitkat,
(when I did this on my driod maxx it locked the bootloaded and I was no longer able to root or use wifi so I got rid if it. )
-should/can I install this leaked lollypop am seeming.
(how would I root it, would it have native wifi support)
This is all new to me.
Thank you

Do NOT take OTA update for the very reason you have described. OTA will put you on 4.4.4 which their is no released root for yet. All other ROMS right now are based on the 4.4.2 version that was previously on our devices.
You can NOT installed leaked Lolipop ROM as that is not for our device. We will have to wait for our carriers version or possibly a port.
Once you get your device you should be able to root using Towelroot which is just a simple .apk that you sideload and run. https://towelroot.com/
Then go to this thread and install Safestrap which is the Recovery we use for our device since our bootloader is locked. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517610
Follow those instructions and then you should be able to go into the Development section and load up a custom ROM. I also HIGHLY advise you take some time and read thru some threads before diving into this to educate yourself before you break something.

-No that ROM you linked to in the video is NOT for our device. That was for the international version. I believe Poland or something like that.
-Do not know about the Note 4. Would take that question to that forum. But OTA update on regular Note 3 for Verizon WILL remove root and bootloader was never unlocked.

Yes you are good to root with that build. Just make sure not to take any updates.

Root and you can disable this or use a custom rom.
Rooted method:
Download "disable service" from Play Store
Open it
Go to System Apps
Find Google Services Framework and tap it
Uncheck "SystemUpdateService"
Restart your device.

Thank you very much all worked perfectly, I had an issue when installing superuser removing knox seemed to hang, but I restarted the phone and all was well. on my old Motorola rooted phone I used Android-wifi for free wifi, is this also recommended for my new note 3 or do you recommend another option.

If i were you I'd look at a dev note 3 developers edition that way no locked boot loader and you can rom way more than on regular note 3 if someone posted this my apologies I did not read everyone's post. Thanks

Is it possible to un-lock the boot loader on this device? I have read that ATT has locked boot loaders.
Also do I need root to enable USB Host? When I use USB host checker , android,hardware.usb.host is checked green.
But,
Hanheld.core_hardware.xml & _core_hardware.xml are X'ed in red.
Any assitance would be greatly appriecieated

I have the SM-t537a, Or the new 10.1 I used towel-root and it did in fact give me full root, Also unlocked the device. I only tested it for root with one of the root checkers from the play store I am sorry I cannot remember witch one. I booted to recovery mode and had full access to the boot-loader
However there are no roms for my device as it is so new. The towel-root is available on the net, I just typed in towel-root on Google,. It took me 3 or 4 tries before I got a clean link, just be careful and follow the instructions, and you should have no problems. Here is the good link for the towel root .apk just go to Google search and type in towel root. I am new here so I cannot post the link, but it is towel root by geohot.
Towel root won't install on my device even though i told it to allow unknown apps. Any ideas on why this is? I have the ATT tab 4 also. I really want to unlock the bootloader on this if anyone knows a work around.

hopefully you already found your answer... you have to downgrade to an exploitable version T537AUCU1ANE1 then use TR. I had the same issue around the start of this year. It's posted in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2785869&page=25#post58495094
OK, I just got this damn Samsung tab 4. I Have the exact one (ATT), it is running 4.4.2. TR does NOT work on this, tried it. Can someone point me in the direction for another method. Looking for the method flashing older version to gain root. Usually google will get me where I need to go, not this time.

Thanks rep, going to give this a try this afternoon. If this works I'll keep the tablet lol.
OK, so that root process worked. Big smile on my face. Now to get a custom recovery on this and flashe a rom. Anyone now of one for sm-t537a?

AT&T and Verizon lock all their bootloaders, so unfortunately custom recoveries and custom kernels are impossible. You could build a custom rom, just as long as it was able to run on top of the stock kernel (so no cyanogenmod). You still have to figure out a way to flash it (Flash Fire maybe?)
Dang. Time to sell this thing lol.
So when did all this get so complicated? I take a hiatus from Android for a year or two and come back and everything is locked down. Maybe I'm wrong, but it never used to be this difficult.
Locked bootloaders are a terrible thing

[Q] Need help with updating to recent version after ****ing up update while rooted.

A week ago, I got a prompt to update to the most recent Android version. I have a Galaxy S5 SM-G900F. Had rooted it with Towelroot in July and everything was smooth, haven't done any major changes other than SuperSU and titanium. After I ok'ed the software update, it got to like 30% or something until it crashed and rebooted. Everything seems fine, just the update didn't get installed, I'm still 4.4.2. When trying to update it, it says that my operating system has been modified in an unauthorized way (towelroot) and that I should try to download updates using Kies.
So I looked a bit for solutions, I checked the SuperSU survival mode AFTER failing the update, and now my question is, what is the best way to update whilst retaining root and all my settings, in the fastest way? Or just what is the best solution to update? Don't really want to download Kies just for this. Sorry for noobness. Thanks for any help, appreciate it.

The best thing to do is always search first. Most questions have been asked and answered before, so a quick search gives you an immediate answer, not to mention a larger number of replies and accumulated wisdom. And if any aspect remains unanswered, you are in a much better position to pose informed questions.
Of course that is a pipe dream, because most people aren't sensible enough to take 30 seconds to search, expecting someone else to gift wrap the answer for them.
Anyway, the best approach is arguably to never be first to accept an update. Instead wait a few days and then see what early adopters are posting about any given new update. Every update is different and that will quickly tell you if there are any issues regarding root and inevitably how to deal with them. OTA updates will usually break root and often fail to install properly as well. It's better to wait and install an update via Odin IMO.
Some apps, notably mobile odin pro and super su pro have root survival modes that will attempt to regain root after an update. But there are no guarantees and you should not rely upon them. Instead treat it as an emergency plan B.
.
Did you change from dalvik to ART. I got the same message after changing to art and going back to dalvik sorted it for me.

Thanks for the answer. I'm not technically well versed, I just know that this forum is the best for people like me who need advice from the pros lol. I would rather just have the most recent update because I don't want any vulnerabilities or whatever. I haven't ever used Odin, just Towelroot and done. I don't use any roms, just factory plus root through towelroot and supersu, that's it for now. So again, how would a noob like me go about safely getting an update and having the reassurance that Towelroot will either still be there, or if an unroot is necessary, that towelroot will be able to root again? Kies? Also, is an actual OTA update still possible (I'm getting that error message) or is a computer update the only thing left?

nope, just towelrooted it 2 months ago and that's that. no roms. still have 4.2.2, wanted to update. I got a failed update a week ago when I got an OTA update prompt. That failed, root is stil there, S5 working fine but can't do OTA since it gives me that error message. What could I do to safely get the most recent software update but retain root, OR be able to update and reroot again with towelroot if I need to unroot to update...
can anybody help please?

Just downgrade to an older rom like NE2 and root with Towelroot, after that flash the new rom with Mobile Odin Pro and keep root with Everroot and the other 2 options enabled. Or flash an older kernel on your updated rom now and reroot with TR, look here for how to http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/how-to-root-triggering-knox-2nd-method-t2843044. I'm sorry but I really don't know what that means in this context for an update. I used Towelroot 2 months ago to root and still haven't gotten myself anx root aps or mods (but was planning on it right when the update failed). Is there not a simple way to make this update work while either 1)unrooting, then updating then rerooting with Towelroot, or 2) updating whilst retaining Towelroot?

I don't think you understand what I'm asking for, or I'm just way too much of a noob, probably that. but I'd just like to update to the most recent Android version. I'm 4.4.2, got an update prompt 1 week ago, have an SM-G900F, and have Towelrooted 2 months ago. All I want is to update. How can I do this, since I'm getting the failure message that it can't be updated due to my device being modified. If I unroot with supersu, then update, then (if the update works) try to Towelroot again, will Towelroot work? Or does the new update **** with it? Or an I update with Samsung Kies, while retaining Towelroot? Ahhhh I'm so sorry for this stupid question but I really don't know
no halp?
I'm really sorry for bumping this again, but I just honestly have no clue what to do to get it updated and either retain Towelroot or be able to install it again after updating. somebody help a noob out please.
my samsung galaxy s5 , it is rooted but I would like to upgrade, I can't do the OTA upgrade so I should proceed with Kies , I would like to know whether I have to unroot my phone (how do I do that? via kies? it does not matter if it'll lose the root, I just want to be sure I would still be able to use my samsung without creating any damage)or just directly proceed with the upgrade, furthermore, my phone was a sumsung galaxy s5 tmobile but I managed to unlock it in order to use it with other carriers, if I install the original firmware and then upgrade to the newest version, can I still use it with other carriers or will return locked? thank you in advance for your help

4.4.4 OTA update with root

Heya. I have a rooted verizon note 3. I see i can get the 4.4.4 ota update. So i uninstalled root via SuperSU. I get an error trying to do the ota update. Is there a way to install this update without having to use odin and flashing stock? I dont want to lose all my appz settings etc. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Probably not a good idea to take the update. I'd wait until our trusty devs get ahold of the OTA and do their magic.
Yah, but i get pretty poor 4g for some reason and this update might (is suppose to) fix it. I read a lot of people have unrooted with superSU and installed the OTA update fine but for me it isnt working. Even though i dont have root.

That might just of been the best error ever, especially if you use root a lot. No way to go back and no known, released root at the moment for that version. Like above me has said, try flashing the NK1 modem using Odin and see if that improves your signal any.
Well, i just have been using the stock rom, rooted with safestrap. Id like to update to 4.4.4 just to have the latest OTA with whatever various fixes it might have. Before i did the update i uninstalled anything from wanam exposed framework wise. Then i did the "remove root" from superSU. I still have the unlocked lock on the note 3 splash screen after reboot and the OTA fails....says error at install screen. I have read other people have done what i have done and the update worked. What im asking is am i overlooking something? Is it really even possible without using odin and reverting to stock even though i have read people have had sucess????

If you want the benefits "fixes" of the latest, would be be smart to Odin stock so you are clean when you take the OTA.

I too have read ambiguous posts of people who have used the 4.4.4 OTA on a towelroot'ed Verizon Note 3s. I've been skeptical that this would work and keep root so thanks for clarifying.
I have a question though. Where should I look to keep track of the latest news about a root technique for a Verizon Note 3? Also, is there a place to contribute to a bounty for someone who can figure this out?
I ask because If you google "samsung note 3 Verizon 4.4.4 towelroot" there are tons of hits, but most of them are from eons ago and while I root my phone, I am not a developer, and so don't know the lay of the land. In the past I've just searched for "root verizon samsung note 3" and crawled through the resulting mound of irrelevant material until eventually I found the answer. Or is the answer simply that every few days I search again to see if anything new pops up?
I realize this is a totally newbie question, but I'm a long-time newbie: I've been rooting my phones for years but I don't have a lot of phones and updates only come out every so often so I never really move up the learning curve of how to do this quickly and easily. I suspect others have the same problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It likely is possible to update and keep root. But if after updating you screw up a mod, etc. and need to get back to stock you will lose root permanently.

Now I lost root, & I gained a whole bunch of bloatware. Very frustrating

I read about 4.4.4 and didn't like what they took away from 4.4.2. I won't go to it. If I were you I'd 'towelroot'- (get the simple steps on xda), and 'beanstown 106' has all the firmwares for these phones, put the nc4 on w/ 4.4.2, then install biggins rom v7, then upgrade via dirty flash with 8.0 then immediately w/ 8.3- fast touch response and after about 3-4 days, you'lI be getting twice the battery life… I jumped up to the new v9 but they dont have the theme for it yet. I miss the Kromex blue on black…

[Q] Need Help Updating AT&T S.Galaxy 4 V. 4.2.2 Rooted to Newest Version AT&T

Hey guys,
I ran a search but I don't understand half the things people are writing. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could please explain to me my options. In layman's terms, as I do not understand half the abbreviations and jargons here.
I rooted my phone over a year ago and really don't remember much about the process. I can't download important apps from Google Play anymore as they require newer versions than 4.2.2... So I'm stuck on this old version and need to update ASAP.
I have ONLY rooted the phone. I haven't done any mods or installed any ROMS. It's on stock AT&T Rom. (sometimes I wonder why I even bothered in the first place).
Can someone please point me in the right direction, I want a regular STOCK AT&T newest version, whether it stays rooted or not that's fine, but a newer version, KitKat preferably. What are my options? The simplest method would help me the most.
Things I really need backed up: My Text Messages, Voicemail, Call Logs, Whatsapp Messages etc. What is the best way to back that up? If I use Titanium Backup, and I don't have root after I update, Titanium Backup would be obsolete. So what would my other option?
Please help.
Much appreciated,
Are you sure you want to update from 4.2.2. You probably have the option to flash custom roms on your phone. There are many custom roms that that'll put 4.4.4 on your phone. Since you're rooted get terminal emulator from the play store. In it type
getprop ro.bootloader
If the last three characters are mdb or mdl you have a lot of options. I can help walk you through on how to get a custom rom on your phone.
You can update your firmware and bootloader to 4.4.4 too but you'll lose the option to flash most custom roms.

Thanks bud,
I got I337UCUAMF3
I'll be honest, I haven't really messed with any custom ROMS before. I just use the stock AT&T one. But I would like to upgrade to KitKat so my phone is faster and can download / upgrade the latest Apps. Lollipop isn't out for the AT&T Samsung S4 right?

Will the phone Not download the latest 4.4.4 from the phone settings?? Settings/More/About Device/Software Update. It must be connected to WiFi to download!!! Or you can get the AT&T S4 i337 to Stock 4.4.4 NJ4 Kit Kat Scroll down this page, easy to do. http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/general/guide-odin-to-stock-updating-rooting-t2926642

No. My phone is rooted... Is it supposed to download to 4.4? And also couldn't there be issues with that?
I found this post. So I know this is ONE option: But I'll lose my Root. Which is fine if that's my only option.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2728462
As the OP says, I will lose ROOT. So my question would be, If I back up using Titanium Backup, how can I restore my backup if Titanium Backup works only on ROOT? This is very important.
@ jd1639 - He had mentioned there were several other options, so I will wait to hear them, and I can make a decision from there. Otherwise, I may have to fork out another $150 - $200 Bucks on a Samsung Galaxy S5 or S6. depending which suits my needs.
Many thanks for the replies!

You're on mf3 bootloader which doesn't really allow you to flash any roms anyway. You'd have to use safestrap.
What I'd do is flash the nb1 tar file in Odin. That'll update you to 4.4 and the device should then ota update itself from there. You will lose root, you can root it again if you want. See this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50912149

Thanks JD, do you know if this wipes my phone? In other words, does it factory reset my phone?
Yes Flash the NB1 Stock file as he said. But you are going to loose Root and any pictures etc. stored on phone memory, so copy them to your PC or SD card. I always like to take SD card out just in case when I flash just in case it may erase it. But after you flash NB1 Stock or the Stock Root it is like a phone and have to set it up. Then it should Update to 4.4.4 itself from the settings/ Software update. Good luck. Any problem let us now.
Ah cheers,
Last question: Do you recommend the First or second option?
I337UCUFNB1_4.4_Stock_Odin_tar
I337UCUFNB1_4.4_Rootable_Stock_Odin_tar
Just a bit confusing as why he would post two separate links? I'm interpreting the first cannot be rooted ever.
Thanks again to the both of you for helping with this.

It's possible to root even the 4.4.4. It just gets a little trickier to do it and you have to flash modules in Odin. In the general forum see "all things at&t....." by guut13

Yep I think you are correct. So if you want to root again use the Rootable to flash in Odin. Once you go from Jelly Bean to Kit Kat bootloaders are Locked for some .tar Same for Lollipop, they have not been able to root and unlock bootloader as yet. Just follow the steps and take your time and all will be good. Have done it several times on mine with Odin.
Hey guys, I just wanted to take the time and thank you both for the help. I finally updated today. After backing up all my data and making sure everything was safe to go. Bam! I did exactly as you suggested and had zero issues... I am now on 4.4.2
There were a couple hiccups along the way, but I figured them out without too much of a hassle.
Cheers again and best of luck to the both of you!

AT&T LG G Pad 7.0 LTE Lollipop Released

Hi all,
For those with the AT&T version of the LG G Pad 7 the Android 5.0.2 update is here. Looks to have been released 2 days ago actually. See http://www.att.com/esupport/softwareUpdateArticle.jsp?sid=KB425003&cv=820
My tablet is not rooted or modified in any way. I checked for updates, says none available so no upgrade for me yet. Will post back once I get it. I've upgraded other devices from KitKat to Lollipop and they are always laggy after the upgrade. I plan to upgrade then factory reset the tablet as that seems to work out much better.
Finally received the update. All went well since I as not rooted or anything like that. Not used it for long but seems a bit more responsive. I did factory reset and set up as new after doing the Lollipop upgrade.
Does anyone know a successful root method. I've tried everything with no luck. There's got to be some way.

hi, were you connected to att network when recieved the update?
Yes my G Pad 7 has a valid/active AT&T Sim card in it. I have it on my mobile share value plan.
Is there a way to root 5.0.2? Everything I have tried seems to fail.

Anyone???
No way to root lollipop. I'm back on KK and working on PAC Rom build.
Sent from my D6503
I have the KK source code for the v410. Is there no way to build a KDZ from it? I am guessing there is not because someone would have though of this by now.
I still don't see this update available. Im using it on wifi only, with no sim card. Can this be the issue?
The mobile(SIM) network is used to access protocols(most common is time/date and OTA) that routers ignore. To update go to AT&T and ask for a new SIM or root; custom recovery; flash update.

Hi, dear, I have been looking for that zip for a long time, can you please give me a link of that as you have said there's a zip with the update, But you didn't share the link of that update kindly do please.
As far as i don't have an AT&T SIM and if i would have one i don't live in the US of America so the OTA on the SIM card is impossible, that way i have asked you guys to share a link you have or someone might have seen it somewhere around the world.

I downloaded KingRoot from app store and that does the trick.
Is there a manual zip file or something for lollipop? Att with no sim. No OTA available
KingRoot APK worked for me..took two tries..then I replaced their flavor of SU with SuperSU....I still have not been able to custom recovery the beast tho.. Lollipop 5.0.2..tried to Flashify with TWRP 3.0.0.0 Bumped..I get boot certification error when I try to go into recovery.. But I can reboot back into Stock ROM..kinda got cold feet..don't want to hose the device!

Memory woes
I've been running my v410 with lollipop for a while now and was getting pretty discouraged that apps keep crashing. Large apps like games will crash when a calendar notification pops up, etc.
I used KingRoot to gain root and then SuperSUme to replace SU and remove KingRoot bloat. Mostly to kill ads since I'm running stock with no custom recovery (there are only about 6 apps I use that require SU)
So anyway, I recently installed Kernel Adiutor to take a peek at some kernel tweaks. Low and behold, the default low memory killer settings are set super aggressive! The most aggressive preset available in Kernel Adiutor is still only half of the default values. I knocked it down to "moderately aggressive" and my memory problems are gone (mostly). I'm now playing with the Z-RAM settings to try and get my memory usage to be more efficient.
I was afraid I would have to downgrade to KK to get this thing back to usable. Perhaps not...
