Note 3 lollipop leak (note 4 problems) - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 General

With the note 3 leaks, im thinking i should wait it to see if lollipop helps.
My note 4 has a lot of lag and freezes. Ive tweaked it as much as i could and it helped a little but, still it feels like a downgrade from my S5's smoothness.
I got the note 4 as soon as verzion released it, so i cnt root it.

If it's that bad, could be your device.. Have you tried to factory reset? Or maybe try clearing cache from recovery? Might help some. If not, take it back to Verizon.. If they can't rectify the issue in store.. They'll swap it out for a new one (If they have them in-stock)

Power off the phone > Hold down: Volume up, home button + power button, together. Phone will vibrate and top left corner should say "Booting recovery", in blue. You should then see the option - Wipe cache partition.

Not stuck just in wrong mode. You can pull the battery and try again or hold the power button for like 15seconds. Try it again this time make sure you are holding all 3. I believe you whimped out on the home button, which put your phone in odin mode instead

I think i was pressing down instead of volume up. Wiped cache and just typing this my keyboard freezes/lags

You got a defective Note 4. I have almost zero lag, and my Note 4 has never once froze. I'd call and try to exchange it; I've read about others like yourself that got bad ones the first time.

Sounds like what everyone is saying might be, my note runs perfect I do use Nova but never no lag or freezes

I have to agree that My Note 4 is probably the most stable non-rooted phone I have ever had. Now that FoxFi lets me tether my unlimited data (one of the main reasons I always obtained root in the past) I'm suprized to say I'm pretty happy with the phone as it is now....

How long have you had it? If it's within half a month, Verizon will replace it with a new one. If you're a bit over that, they might help you out. If you're way over that, at this point, I'd say exchange it anyway. You need a phone that works properly.

No its been awhile, ive had it since launch. I already spoke with verizon and i declined the Certified phone. I paid over $700 for a new phone, i dont want a used one.
At the moment i dont even use it as a phone, its my at home tablet. Im using my other phone instead. Which is why id be ok with sending it to samsung for a week or two if they either fixed it or sent me a new one back.
Would a reset really make a difference?

You might be surprised how much oft a difference a factory reset can make sometimes. It's not the cure to everything, and it won't address a hardware issue, but it often fixes a heck of a lot of problems people experience on the software side of things that aren't widespread (and a Note 4 that's lagging/freezing as badly as you're indicating isn't normal or a widespread issue).
Verizon and/or Samsung would have you do a reset before sending it in anyway, so you might as well give it a shot.

Samsung won't send you a new one. They send used. Been there and done that. You own a used phone so they won't send you a new phone in return.

You know, you might try flashing the Odin file yourself. It's quite possible that would fix any software problems. Of course, if the problem stems from hardware, it won't help. But I would definitely try that before messing with insurance, as it seems far more likely to me that this is a software problem.

Of course. You can always Odin back to stock.
This post tells you how to do it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2942937
Remember to read the note about step 6 because you have the retail version (as do I, by the way).
And no, it will not trip Knox, as this article explains: http://www.kingoapp.com/help/samsung-knox-counter.htm#.VK4rfYHTnqA
Of course, it's obvious it won't trip the counter because it's the stock, official ROM, but I figured I'd supply an article nonetheless. Good luck!

2. Extract Odin v3.09 & open it

3. Reboot to Download Mode (press and hold Home + Power + Volume Down)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Connect phone and wait until you get a blue sign in Odin
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Add the *.tar.md5 file to AP / PDA
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. Make sure re-partition is NOT ticked
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7. Click the start button, sit back & wait a few minutes
● In step 6 add the PIT file to "PIT" which will tick the "Re-Partition" option
So im very bad at this stuff but ill give it a try. Just some questions
1) Odin is a computer program?
2) steps 5/6 the odin program does it for me if i select it
3) is thise the same as reset? Or what exactly does this do (also i should back up my stuff prior to this rightm?)
4) if i can do can i root? I heard root is how i would de-bloat it.

i will be buying a Bell Vibrant very soon, so i just wan to know how can you tell it has the recovery feature?
Hold down Home+VolumeDown+Power. It will boot up into a screen with a yellow yield sign and say "Download mode".

Want to hear a funny story?
I was in my Bell store today, seeing if they had any accessories in for the Vibrant yet. My sales rep was there, and we started talking about the device, unlocking, modding, etc.
He mentioned they had five returns since Monday regarding the download and recovery mode issue they swapped out on the DOA plan. Guess there's a lot of modders in the downtown Vancouver area.
I asked him if they still had any of those returns, he said yep, they had all of them, they hadn't been processed out of the store yet. He brought a couple out, and I fired them up, did the download keypress and fired them up. Repeated this process for four working phones in total, the fifth was well and truly dead.
Guess what?
EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM WENT INTO DOWNLOAD MODE.
EVERY
SINGLE
ONE
So did all the demonstration models.
I'll leave it to you to figure out the moral of this story.

Maybe some people don't know how to do it properly, but when I was bringing my SGS in for replacement, I had no problems popping the demo phone into recovery and download modes Just wouldn't work with mine and the one they let me try out of the box. Ended up heading to Future Shop and couldn't get either of their 2 available phones to work.
Hopefully local stores have got another batch in stock.

Pwr+Home+Vol- for download, switch vol+ and vol- for recovery. Power on with all 3 kept pressed, then let go of the pwr button before it loops another reboot. Or at least that's how I did it.
It took me a few tries to get it to work.
Now I don't have a problem.
I'm sure all those returns will simply go into the exchange pile.

Coming from an HTC Touch, the key difference is you could initiate the bootloader mode WHILE the phone was running. This process requires the phone to first be off.

Talking about how to activate the recovery/download thing. What I read (and what worked for me) was when the samsung logo appears on screen, let go of the power button for like half a second then hold it again. Worked flawlessly for me!
I rooted mine in-store while waiting for the paperwork to be finished.

you can install the lag fix without being able to get into recovery mode

[Q] Suddenly won't boot, help

I have a Galaxy S as shipped by Bell Canada. It doesn't have the 3 button download mode so I'm staying away from 3rd party roms for now.
It is unlocked and rooted. All has been well until today. I had it off for a while to use the SIM in another phone. When I turned it back on it asked for the SIM unlock code. I Dismissed that and checked the phone, all seemed well other than no SIM activation. I turned it off and removed the SIM and now it won't boot. I get the usual logo, the song, and for a long time the S logo. If I wait long enough it then appears to be off. If I press the back or menu key they will light up but that's it. I can't do anything else other than pull the battery.
I tried the hard reset with holding volume down and tap the power button. That only turns it back on with the same problem. The actual SIM is fine and working in another phone.
Is there anything I can do? If I could hard reset it I'd take it back to the store but I hesitate for now while it still contains my data.
this is a problem i have just posted about a couple of mins ago
but i can get it recovery mode and fatory reset with the vol up, home and power
then it will boot but obviously i have to then reset everything from scratch which is really annoying so anyone got any idea re this
lucky for you that you can get into recovery. Right now I'd be happy with a hard reset, it doesn't take long to rebuild the setup. I'd like to know who decided to remove the recovery mode, that's evil and keeps me from simply resetting the device.
its all the apps re downloading and installing them and resetting up accounts and swype and all that lot need a fix asap
do you know what version of andoid you are running
yes but at least you can get a working phone again, I can't without being able to get into any boot menus. Honestly it only takes 30 minutes to setup again from scratch. I'm on 2.1 and what I find at least on my HTC when it had 2.1 is that I setup the google account, let it sync contacts etc, then from Market Downloads I'll see listed all my apps that were previously installed. As long as I don't leave that screen I can install each app one after the other. Or a proper backup....
Any other magic key combos to reset this thing???
did you try hooking up to kies?
Yes but that does nothing since it never fully boots.

Same thing happened to my phone, but a factory reset did nothing. The internal SD card gave out. Phone is now sent away for 3 - 6 weeks awaiting repair.
my phone did this to me today too, I was just about to post about this when I saw this thread.
So its an SD Card problem? theres no hope of getting it fixed without sending it in?
Yes I think it is the internal card meaning there isn't anything good enough to reset to. I walked the phone over to the store and I'll have to wait for new stock next week. Actually I'm lucky they will exchange it since I bought it outright which apparently is "against policy" even though they list a no contract full price. We'll see how it goes next week but overall I despise the telco industry in this country.

i went to best buy today to try and exchange it, and apparently they only have a 14 day exchange policy with phones despite it saying 30 day on the receipt, anyhow i phoned samsung and they said i have to go through bell, even though im using the phone on telus, so that should be interesting.
So all the people that are having this problem have the Bell model?
Today i got mine off eBay, as soon a i turned it on, i get exactly the same thing.
It wont load into Android, i see that galaxy S logo and then black screen.
If i go into recovery i see "cant mount SD Card".
The more is search this forum the more i see that all the people with this problem are owners of the Bell i9000M model.
I seriously think they have some defect with the manufacturing line of the phone.
Have you guys installed any firmware on your phone before this happened?
mine is like that out of the box.
Mine is the same Bell model. There seems to be some issues with them which makes the lack of download mode even more dangerous. Right now it doesn't feel like the warranty is going to cover us for problems not our fault. I hope they replace it next week but if it still lacks download mode I'll remain nervous.
Seems like everyone is with the Bell model but my questions is:
Have you guys installed another firmware than the factory one which caused this to happen?
Are you running Stock?
We need to try and narrow this down as i am seeing too many posts about this issue, and they are with the Bell model.

I haven't flashed any 3rd party roms. I did do the official update via Keis which even at the store today they reminded me that I should do the update.. That update seemed to go well and has been working for over a week until I turned it off for an hour. It still isn't clear if the disabled 3 button mode is hardware or software related but we all seem to have that in common too. So before they dismiss the whole thing and we get hosed over technicalities such as unlocking it should be clear that there are clear defects in these phones as far as I can tell.
I want to be comfortable that I'm not left out of hundred of dollars just because I choose to buy it outright and not be tied to contracts. Samsung has to play nicely because it is their phone. Bell has to play nicely because they are bringing them in and distributing to retail. What carrier I use should be irrelevant because the problems are not related to usage.
FYI, the clerks went off for conference to decide if I somehow got the phone against policy. Either they trust my story or I got mine moments before they got the memo about not selling outright.

Our posts crossed..
Yes I believe mine had the JH2, the official keis offered firmware. I was looking forward to the biggie update at the end of the month so wasn't about to risk bricking before then. Irony stepped in anyway.
I'm a bit nervous until I get a new one. At that point if the 3 button mode still doesn't work I'll remain nervous that I'll get another potential brick.
edit-> yes, I simply shut it down for an hour or two to use the SIM in another phone to test that phone. At next boot it died. I knew something was wrong when the logo stayed up for much longer.
I have the 3 buttons enabled so it is not related to the 3buttons being disabled, however when i boot into recovery it clearly displays an error that it can not find the internal SD.
There is definitely something wrong with the Bell Galaxy S corrupting itself.
I bought mine from an eBay seller, he is saying the phone booted fine when he shipped it but when i opened the box today i only got this black screen after logo.
Gladly the seller will take it back.
Maybe this is why there are shortages everywhere in Canada. I hope the caught this up and are fixing it with the new batch.

Once again: Noob bricked his new phone..

Sorry to annoy you guys with the same things over and over again. Me - used to flash and customize WM devices quite alot - was a bit to fast with Android I guess.
Had Samsung with stock firmware (about 3-4 months ago, cant tell more).
Wanted to start getting into flashing new Roms, so tried to flash semphore kernel first (Yes.. i know now..).
Went trough somehow anyways, Odin gave green light, I disconnected from USB.
But instead of device booting into somethin I got the white I9100 letters and a big "!" sign below.
(Guess I know now why..)
So.. i tried to flash again with repartition on. I left it running for about 45 minutes, but nothing was happening. Red some posts - guess the wrong ones - that told me if it is stuck for that long you should disconnect, remove bat, retry. Did so, and to my shock odin suddenly replied with:
<ID:0/003> Re-Partition operation failed.
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)
<ID:0/003> Removed!!
I should have listended... " DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!" And read more before I try. I know. Now its not even powering on - guess this means some serious money I gotta pay for repair? Or is there anything left I could try???
Sorry for the noob action....
Is that a kernel for a different phone by any chance (i.e. Samsung Galaxy S)?
Try getting into download mode from the phone, volume down, home button and power button, press all 3, and report back.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
The ! sign is normal. its just there to tell that you are using an unofficial kernel. the repartition is the reason why your device is bricked. Never tick that one
First off all you don't need to repartition when only flashing a kernel.
If you are able to boot in download-mode
You can flash a stock firmware from http://www.sammobile.com and everything should be okay again
And semaphore is not for the S II
Sent from my GT-I9100 using CyanogenMod7
No way to get into download mode.. no battery sign on charge, just black.
So guess there is no way out if it? I red about a special usb cable you can solder yourself, I would not mind doing so... But the pure black on the phones display tells me somehow this time it went worst case... hit me!!!
What would you tell em if you bring it back? I only have it 3 months, kept in case, looks brandnew, guess I still get some good service.
Tell them it got stuck on Kies Update?
Tell them it simply turned off and stayed?
Any other ideas?
Guess telling them "tried to flash wrong, unofficial firmware, then re-partioned and plugged off to early" wont help much to get the repair for free.
I can only hope I bricked it that bad that they cant revive and think its a hardware problem.

Potentially yes.
Maybe you are lucky and they would accept it when you say kies messed it up.
But i think you don't have bricked it
... If i got it right you just flashed a kernel from a wrong device, right? this means your bootloader is still intact... So no need to worry, your second flash didn't even start according to the odin log you posted.
Here a few things you can try:
1. Maybe your battery is empty because if the long time in download mode (it doesn't get charged there) -> either charge it with some cheap exterenal charger or find someone who borrows his
2. If you have ensured your battery isn't empty, take it out, wait a few minutes and insert it WHILE you hold three button combo for download mode (needs some acrobatic skills ) hold it a bit to see what happens (can be up to 10sec.), if you are in download mode make sure to flash a fw with three files plus re partition with pit!!!
3. If this gets stuck again try to flash just a pit file and nothing else, this will erase every single partition and then repeat step 2
4. Buy a jig for 5 bucks on ebay or amazon (or do it yourself as you said)
A jig will be your last resort but to 99% you will be successful with it. As i said because your bootloader is still intact.
And take care to use only files for i9100 this time

Most off the time it does! But sometimes it doesn't.
But it costs a lot less when you need to repair it by samsung or service store ect.

Invest in a Jig. They cost <$3 on ebay or you can make one yourself just youtube
"How to Make a USB Jig for $2! [Galaxy S2] [Download Mode][Reset Odin Counter] "
Ive had my phone brick on me SOOOO MANY TIMES but ive always managed to revive it. Belive me and anyone else who says "get a JIG".....GET ONE! Better <$3 jib that saves your phone or spend another X amount on a repair/new phone
You guys give me hope. Thx!
I ordered a Jig from ebay yesterday already. (7 € but fast delivery).
I can´t believe the battery was empty, I had it on about 80 % when starting odin
with "repartition" on. And it was showing the "do not disconnect message" on screen
when I plugged it off, which did not dissapear. Then I turned it off, removed battery, instantly after that it was only giving me black.
So I guess it was in the middle of repartitioning.. I really did not expect it to take THAT long, at least not after the first flashing went trough in about 10 seconds. Dunno what this means exactly, does this hurt the bootloader itself? I thought (...) it was only the userfile space / system space.
And sure, I will try each and every trick before I send it in and tell it was evil, evil kies.
Cause IF they are able to revive, they will instantly see on the counter that I did mess with it.
Lets hope I dont pay to much for my little playing - actually I just wanted all functions I bought the phone for to work.... get rid of the beta they sold with it..

Gosh, you can really count on that. I have no idea what was riding me, I have been flashing WM phones since 2006 and never bricked one, always red alot before.
And the I kick my shiny new SGS2 in about 10 minutes into darkness...

Same here, always flashing and I always read (I'm too chicken **** to not read ).
I will heed this warning, and keep reading. For now, I can only say that I hope it works.
How you doin'? Greetings from my GT-I9000!
You flashed a kernel from the galaxy s instead of the s2. Did you use the ops file for the s also? I've read that using a wrong ops file is bad..... Anyone else here that maybe knows a bit more, does this file contain the partition layouts for the phone?

[Q] LG repair costs

My phone is bootlooping and I can't access recovery. I can't restore the phone's stock software because I edited build.prop and it's not showing up as a Verizon phone. I decided to bite the bullet and just pay LG to reset it. However, when I contacted them to do this they told me I need to mail the phone in and they will tell me how much it costs after their tech looks at it. I'm worried if I do this that they'll charge me an exorbitant amount to fix it... Does anyone have any idea how much they usually charge to do this?
Sending the phone off to LG should be your last resort. It sounds like you've not tried everything!
Send it in to warranty. As long as there's no physical damage Verizon isn't going to give a rats a$$

Well, in another thread a Sprint tech said that LG did not give them a method to flash the stock software if the model check failed. I assumed this was the case for Verizon as well. I'll call them tomorrow and ask, I may have misunderstood what he wrote. I can't seem to find his post now. I'll update this post after work tomorrow if they can recover the phone.
theoneofgod, what is it that you think I haven't tried yet? If you have a suggestion which would save me the trouble of sending this phone in I would be super happy. To recap, here's what I've tried:
1. Using hard keys to factory reset (on TWRP 2.6.3.1 so it actually factory resets instead of booting into recovery)
2. Hitting "adb reboot recovery" over and over as TWRP loads and performs factory reset (this worked for people on 2.6.3.1 on AT&T but doesn't seem to be working on my Verizon phone for some reason. I've tried it dozens of times and even wrote a batch file which spams "adb reboot recovery" many, many times faster than I could type it)
3. Flashing the .tot file through download mode (Model check fails)
4. Flashing the .kdz file through download mode (Hangs at either 4% or 10% and asks me to restart. Never gets past 10%)
5. Entering my IMEI into the LG update tool, letting it download the software for the phone, and letting it try to flash the software (it fails)
What was the reason for bootloop? i also change my model name to make camera app show pics in menu, but it didn't help, and i returned to stock build.prop. So whats your story? Its good to know what i should NOT do with the phone.
Yea a good idea if you share what you've done so readers can be aware of it. Goodluck to your G2 pal and we're sorry for you..

Np don't mind sharing, thanks for the sympathy this definitely sucks aha. I usually add in qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 to get rid of the software keys when I put a new ROM on. It worked the first time I did it on this phone, my best guess is that I mistyped something. I'm not 100% sure why this is making my phone not show up as a Verizon model during the model recovery check...someone more knowledgeable than me would have to explain that.
Melodycd, I think you should be fine doing that as long as you're careful. I was pretty careless and made a lot of mistakes to get in my position. As long as you don't do ALL of the following things you should be safe:
1. Not have the latest recovery
2. Not have USB debugging enabled
3. Mess up while editing a build.prop file so you bootloop
It doesn't matter what they can or can't do with the phone. They don't care what you did to it as long as it's not physically damaged or have water damage. Software issues can be fixed. If they couldn't flash new software they wouldn't have CLN devices to send out for warranty.
I've sent in several dozen phones that I left rooted (for legitimate defect concerns) and none were charged back. They don't need to know what happened to the phone when you call all they need to know is its not working and to send you out a device. They'll receive yours, flash it or send it back to LG to flash, then send it out to someone else as a warranty device.

Okay I'll send it in tomorrow. Thanks man, I was just worried that since the phone says "rooted" in download mode they would flip out about it. Appreciate the reassurance.

I'm just sharing my experience. Over the past 5 years I've been rooting and returning. I can't guarantee anything but i can tell you my experiences and what I've been told by vzw people I know.
I had my g2 repaired when it was rooted. My camera wasn't working atall would just show up black when i opened the app. I sent it in rooted w CWM recovery as i stupidly forgot to remove it. And i had a replacement within 5 days no questions asked.
Not sure if this is because i am in UK or not, but they didn't blink an eye.

Yep I was just worried because the Verizon phone explicitly states that it is rooted. Just to follow up for those who are on Verizon and are stuck bootlooping and with no way to flash the stock ROM, what 06stang said held true for me (so far). The Verizon rep on the phone couldn't help me (she said she needed me to put my SIM card in my G2 when I was calling her from my old phone) so I took it to a Verizon store. The dude checked it for physical damage, tried to turn it on, and when he saw it bootloop he put in an order to get me a replacement phone. I'll report back in a week or two after I send in my rooted phone and let people know what happens, it seems like they won't charge me as of right now though.

[Q] firmware

Hi, I got a videotron (canadian carrier) note 4. Unlock and using it on rogers network. I bought it second hand, and seller didn't told me about the root..... On sammobile site, for the firmware, all canadian carrier have model sm-n910w8 as model #. Is it safe to flash rogers firmware on it? And is there a way to see if knox (probably been tick off) how many time and anyway to reset it. Looking through google but a bit lost. Thanks for your help
Bump
You can boot in download mode to check knox. If tripped it cannot be reset as of yet.
Thanks, that's what I was getting so, no biggies. Now, firmware side, beside sammobile, is that one look ok
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/unbri...alaxy-note-4-sm-n910w8-bell-rogers-telus-etc/
Mm might be for exynos chip note 4.... Not good I guess
Edit #2 http://samsung-updates.com/details/34574//SM-N910W8/BMC/N910W8VLU1ANIH.html
Seem better but not sure
I don't know much about north American models.
http://www.sammobile.com/2014/10/13...plained-by-region-connectivity-and-processor/
my guess is that any n910w8 firmware will work on any n910w8 phone, just different bloatware from carrier.
That's my guess also and as long as it is meant for Canada

installed the one for rogers from sammobile, but upon flashing thought odin, videotron bloat is still there..... and have to contact seller, as I try to set cerberus and says that devices is linked to another account..... Grrrr and lost sellers #. Still have his address. Hope not a stollen devices.
bump
Followed that how to: http://youtu.be/WlHN7XPDvXQ go through all the prossess. Phone optimize the app.... How to get a return to stock, a full clean install. Any better walk through?
Any hint?

Just flash with Odin and then make a hard reset from recovery. Then download cereus. As of about the bloat you need root to remove anything that comes preinstalled
Cerberus is installed, just can't use it cause device is linked to another account...... Settler swear he bought it new... On kijiji.... Kind of funny I guess
It comes preinstalled on a Samsung official firmware? Never seen that

Would be very surprise was pre-installed. someone else with a N4 could confirm. I know that you can make cerberus a system app if rooted, so a hard-reset, from the phone wouldn't erase it, but I flash through odin, should erase all and put new rom.... Seller don't seem 100% legit if can say, He told me that i could get another security app.... he think that it"s might be the place that have unlock the phone that have put it on it,... thinking asking for a refund
And quick info, capacitive buttons, when they light up, do they look like with thin lines over them (thin black lines) or there is no interruption all white with nothing over

lol. looks like you got a fake note 4. the HDC ones have the black lines.
does the button on the stylus work with the stylus moved away from the screen (not touching?).

Air command open when button on stylus is pressed, dot show on screen as soon as stylus is about a inch of screen, a cursor like a | show if there is text under and keep pressing the button. Kies see the phone, as a note 4. What HDC mean? Saw a few pic where the line shows on the net. But still trying to get a refund from seller, he told me he wasn't a store, than he told me to give him the phone, he would sell it and pay me after.... Imei on phone and box don't match, and the one on phone, you google it and get result.... At least not blacklisted on protectyourdata.ca and using the phone.
Any input?
