[Q] Multiple users in Lenovo A3500-FL (A7-40) - Lenovo A3500 Questions & Answers

I just got a Lenovo A3500-FL tablet.
I was under the impression that after android 4.2 and forth, the option in settings-->device-->user, should be visible.
By that you can add multiple users(up to 3), each of one managing different apps and different app accounts.
The tablet had initially 4.2 ( the option was not there) and later was updated to 4.4.2.
The option is still missing, something that makes the tablet sort of useless, because its being used by two persons.
Is there a way to access this feature, without rooting the device? Is this option standard when the device is rooted?
I would prefer not to go down with the rooting option, since its voiding the warranty, and I had some unpleasant experiences in the past with rooting (hello brick device!).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Pros and Cons of rooting your device?

Hi I am new to the world of acers and the iconia as I previously used all apple products. I have heard about rooting your device but there were a few things I wanted to know before I do so. Firstly is it difficult to do so? Is there much risk involved for example could I possibly ruin the device if I do something wrong? and the other thing I wanted to know about rooting a device is what are the pros and cons of doing so?
Thank you in advance for your contribution.
Welcome to the Android world. Addressing your questions:
Firstly is it difficult to do so? no, you just browse on this forum for the iconiaroot file. It is as easy as run the app, wait a few minutes (reboot included), and done, you are rooted.
Is there much risk involved for example could I possibly ruin the device if I do something wrong? I don't think so, never heard of anybody bricking their a500 just by rooting it (I could be wrong, but chances are low).
and the other thing I wanted to know about rooting a device is what are the pros and cons of doing so? you can have more control over the OS and do some modding that would not be able without root, for instance NTFS support (you are no longer limited to the 4GB file of FAT format), on the cons, Acer might not like it and would refuse to apply the warranty, but you can always unroot, leaving no traces so they won't know (basically I think there are no cons)
First off rooting your tablet only means you have changed the level of your user access to root. This alone won't cause a device to become bricked. It only allows you the user access to files that if changed without caution can brick a device. Like they say "guns don't kill people, people kill people". Translation "rooting doesn't brick tablets people brick tablets". The process is safe and won't hurt the device. The reasons for keeping users from this sort of access is for the manufacturer to protect themselves from an endless supply of returned goods that are broken from user error.
As for gains you'll be suprised at the customization available especially compared to apple products. Go slow and learn.
sent from the drivers seat, yup texting while driving
Netflix! You can patch your tab so that the apps finally work
You can also get SetCpu which can save you battery life.
you can use drivemount to mount drives that are not FAT32 formated (NTFS)
you also can change your wifi so it allows you to access ad-hoc wifi networks.
or you can use adblock to block ads on your device.
you can install a custom recovery and do backups and install custom roms...
i definately would root it!
I agree
There is no danger in rooting your device - nor is any technical skill required, it is literally as easy as changing one check box in settings, downloading a program and clicking "root". This opens the door to do lots of fun things with your Iconia. Unrooting the device in case you wanted to return it is also just as easy, click one button and you are set.
As other posters have pointed out - having root access cannot brick your device in itself. Having root access and using it to modify a part of the system and not doing it right can result in a unbootable tab.
Welcome to the world of Android and grants on your new Iconia. There are plenty of great things you can do after gaining root, just remember to take things one step at a time and ask questions if you are unsure *before* proceeding with any modification of your tablet.
In my experience, I was rather new with Android when I got my Iconia as well. Just take it slow, and when in doubt read the instructions once more and ask questions

+1 to that - Netflix was the only reason I rooted.
Pro: Netflix
Con: you shouldn't need root access just to access netflix

[Q] Proxy settings - play store and apps

Hi everyone. I got my Nexus 7 just yesterday. Im loving the tablet so far but was annoyed to find out the proxy settings didnt work for all apps. ( brother has the s3 and says it works perfectly). I was wondering if there is a solution to this without rooting the device. I have rooted devices before: ( HTC desire HD, the Sensation but always disliked two things about rooting: A) I find it very time consuming especially if its your first time on a device because you have to read a lot. B) You can no longer update directly as is the norm and that is again ... very time consuming.
Is there any way to get the playstore to work in my universtiy without proxy-droid / rooting my device? Why dont Google open all proxies by default? I find this very counter productive:S

Why is there no global proxy for Android? Good question. There are browser-specific proxies (which is all that can be proxied in most cases anyway). Have you looked into OpenVPN? You don't need to be rooted to use OpenVPN. I thought I'd read that there was going to be a global proxy for Android in ICS or JB but some quick googling I didn't find anything.
And updates when just rooted are a non issue. You can get updates etc. You'll need to use something like OTA Rootkeeper to not get un-rooted in the process, but even with a custom recovery (latest TWRP) you can install OTA's etc, no problems.
Its really annoying. I feel like rooting a device just for that reason is silly. If proxy-droid can give you a global proxy as easily as it does, google really have no excuse for not implementing this as a stock option, especially not when so many people use their phones/ tablets in Universities/ academic / business settings with a proxied connection. To me it just seems like this contradicts the very principles that Android was developed for/ based upon. And yes, this is a useless rant but I just find it extremely annoying that my device cant even access the playstore now :S

[Q] Knox equivalent app/ restoring knox functionality after ROOT

Hello,
I recently rooted my n9005. I was aware that knox will be malfunctioning but without checking that before I guessed that there would be plenty of similar apps on play store. I did a bit of research and I havent found anything even close to knox. Functionality I am looking for is using 2 profiles. First will be with some access restrictions to photos documents etc and second password or symbol protected will be fully open. Key feature is separating those 2 "accounts" with 2 different desktops like in knox.
I am running stock 4.4.2 and would prefer to leave it this way(unless custom rom would be only option)
Any1 got any idea how to solve this?
I did some research but still I've found only software that merges f.ex. contacts mails and documents in 1 encrypted app but nothing fiting my needs. Anyone else could help? I wont believe such problem is left unsolved.

Rooting: why bother?

Managed to flash recovery and root YB after a lot of frustration. Question now is: Why bother? Cannot delete the Lenovo/Google junk - which is the main reason I root devices. Installed only one app that requires root so far - Adaway - only to have the YB hang for a while during every operation.
Bought the YB out of curiosity only. Find I dislike Lenovo intensely (not alone in this). The YB is in many ways just a gimmick. The fancy hinge is not required on such a light device - it's just a selling point; money would have been better spent on an improved CPU or camera (which is useless). Keyboard is handy, but I find my Note5 serves me just as well (besides being a vastly better device on all fronts). I don't expect anyone will even try to develop a custom ROM for the YB.
Anyway, will fiddle with the YB some more and then give it away to someone hereabouts. If I am missing something about rooting the YB, please let me know.
seems like you should try a little bit harder...just becasue you don't know how to deal with it, it doesn't mean that it isn't possible stock apps can be deleted, at least with help of some third party apps (e.g. titanium) that require root (i personally got rid of those google docs apps, chrome browser, lenovo intro, etc...)
what were your problems with rooting? by now, I went back to stock via backup three times (for several reasons) and rooted it again, which sums up to four times rooting without any hiccups.

Actually used titanium to try to remove junk apps. First time ever with this problem. Even tried to delete the apks directly using es file manager. Cannot so far find out what is preventing their removal (titanium reports them uninstalled, while es reports operation failed).
Root. Posted elsewhere on this. Rooting in itself is not a problem. In fact, I intend restoring stock to see if that will get rid of the hangs that are occurring. As matters stand for me at the moment, I really have no use for root.
See a 12" YB is on offer now. Looks as though the 10" version is history already - but I suspect it will remain a curiosity for a while yet.

GUIDE - HOW TO GET ALONG ON XDA [noob-friendly]
1st: USE SEARCH (eg. 'root yoga tab 2')!!! it is really easy! 3rd entry should do the trick.
2nd: reading skills are also very helpful: if i remeber correctly, there's kind of a 'how xda works' when you register...it's quite useful, especially if you want to get along without trouble in the future.
hope it works!!!

I had a few questions about modifying my old NST I recently dusted off

I've gotten back into reading lately, and I've been doing most of it on an iPad. I remembered yesterday that I had a NST lying around and went and dusted it off, charged it up, and moved some books over with Calibre. To nobody's surprise, I absolutely adore reading on it compared literally any LCD. I actually stumbled into finding out that there was an active modding scene around it just today and I've been going up and down some of these threads but I have a few questions.
First and foremost, my biggest reason for coming here was to get a modified firmware that allowed for faster refreshes/page turning. I've seen two major threads on this, but both are decently old and I've only ever seen newer questions/responses deal with installing an APK launcher on top of existing firmware. So my questions are:
1. Does the 1.2.2 firmware stop those old methods from rooting/working?
2. If not, why are they not the recommended methods anymore? Too complicated and greater risk to the device?
3. If not (1.), which of these two ROMs is recommended, and are there updated installation guides?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2651053
https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/development/1337-rom-t2931567
Second, if neither of the custom ROMs are a good choice, I've seen both Relaunch and RelaunchX brought up as custom launchers, with multiple ways of installing them (Directly through ADB vs NookManager) and was looking for some opinions on that as well. Sorry in advance if I didn't search well enough, but any help is appreciated.

1. Which old methods? The 1.2.2 FW update is mainly a TLS 1.2 compliance for connection to B&N servers. There are other minor "under-the-hood" changes, but nothing for the user. That said, the only rooting method that has been specifically updated for the 1.2.2 update is NookManager. Other methods may work. Or not. It would be trial-and-error, i.e., always start with a backup.
2. NookManager is, by far, the simplest and least intrusive layperson's method to root. With some customization you can tailor the initial result. Again, other methods may work.
3. There are no updates for the two ROMs you list. Both are based on the 1.2.1 firmware. This is where things get complicated. Since the TLS update of the 1.2.2 FW is only for the B&N server contact, you don't "lose" anything by staying with 1.2.1 FW. However, if your device is still in contact with B&N, it will attempt to update OTA at random intervals and fail, resulting in a spontaneous reboot. One or both of those ROMs may be structured so that there is no more contact with B&N servers--or all B&N stuff could be wiped out. You'd have to look into the dirty details (if any are given). My experience with attempting this kind of thing has not been good, but maybe that's because I always want to retain the B&N Library and Reader/Dictionary. I like them and they meet my needs. But keeping just a part of the B&N system is nearly impossible--at least it has proven so for me.
So.....I just leave all the B&N stuff alone and install my own stuff for everything but the Library and Reader. It works just fine and doesn't complain about not being able to contact B&N, etc. YMMV and your desires and needs may be quite different.
As for page refresh, there are a couple of approaches. Cool Reader has a version which includes e-ink page refresh settings. Also, some time in the distant past there was a post about changing the number of pages before a complete screen refresh (in the B&N reader). I was actually going to look that up this morning when I saw your post, so if I find it, I'll add that info later.
Edit: here's the info about changing the page refresh interval for the B&N reader: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1699481
For 3, there are useful things in those ROMs, but they may not be ideal for everyone if just installed as is.
For example, both run a handful of scripts at startup that may not be ideal for how some people want to use the Nook. The changes to the RAM management in particular were way too aggressive in my opinion.
But I did end up using one of those ROMs on one of my Nooks, just with most of the startup scripts disabled. On my other Nook running the stock firmware, I borrowed various bits and pieces from the custom ROMs. It just took some time to figure out what worked for me.
