Ballistic nylon, five feet to the cement, no case... - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo General

... and not a scratch. I was at the gym on the elliptical and my phone was knocked off the shelf up on the control panel to the ground by the woman on the next machine who tripped a little bit as she dismounted. I didn't see how the phone landed because at first I thought the woman had passed out or something and I was trying to break her fall. I was expecting carnage but I cant find a single mark on the phone. I have to figure I was lucky in this case and it does make me think, do I cover the sexy beast up or do I continue to go commando (so to speak) and hope for the best?
Anyhow I suppose it is good to know for the moment that the phone does stand some chance of surviving a drop onto a hard surface.

Awesome

I'm terrified not to have a case on my phone's but just like you I've dropped mine once and nothing happen thank goodness.

I've dropped mine unprotected a few times, and I've yet to have any sort of scratches. Wonder what this stuff is made of haha
First time was while getting out of my car- out of my coat pocket onto cement. (This was probably the worst of the falls.)
Second, Out of my hand onto hardwood floors.
Third (and most recent-) again from my hand onto linoleum (in the kitchen this morning.)
And after all that- the phone is still passably new.

Yeah I was going naked since I love the nylon and had the free screen replacement, but a fall from my car to the cement ruined all of that fun. Gotta case up the replacement model now

I'm risking it without a case right now. I've got a Zagg screen protector, but the blue ballistic nylon is too nice to cover up. I've got the free replacement + square trade warranty so hopefully I'll be covered if anything happens

Similar experience here; skateboarding in Philadelphia (super rough concrete sidewalks and street), dropped from my hand, fell right onto the griptape and off onto the street. Small scratch on the black part of the frame that's not noticeable unless you look hard.

Yeah... I didn't see it online when I registered it, so I just registered it as a Droid Maxx

I normally case em up right away not just for the protection but also to make them thicker, I find the most recent phones a little too thin to hold comfortably. With this one being a little more bulky than the current norm, a very comfortable shape for me, and the ballistic nylon which for some reason I find to feel very nice in hand I've been loathing the thought of wrapping the rascal.
That out the car door drop is the worst, done that one a few times. Seems like that rough pavement combined with the way it comes out kinda sideways so it skids a little when it hits are a killer.
I hit up Amazon for the casemate case, forget what they call it but its the clear one. I'm hoping it wont join my commuter case which I had on the phone for five minutes before it went in the drawer.

I just got the Metallic Black today. May have to take it back, I've noticed a clicking and soft spot where the Verizon logo is at.

Pinhole
My dog jumped and caught my headset wire and sent my Moto Maxx flying out of my hand onto the sidewalk. Looked none the worse for wear except for a tiny sharp feeling speck on back by camera. I was worried that the ballistic nylon was unraveling there. Looked at it under a microscope, and there is a tiny little hole in the nylon, perfectly round, like it landed on a pin. The edges of the hole were rough, that's what I felt. I took the blunt end of a wooden cotton-tip applicator and pushed down on the area, and it smoothed out. Now it feels fine and looks fine unless you look at it under the microscope! Weird little bit of damage though!
I think the phone is tough and looks cool, but the ballistic nylon is not very grippy, so I now slap a TPU case on it before I walk the dogs!

No, it has that issue in other areas and not the Moto logo.
Its a non-issue. There is a pocket of air between the backing and the internals. The back is not glued on and there is an adhesive for the QI charging coil. You pressing on it is probably touching that, making the noise.

That hole may be for a noise cancelling microphone. Mine has it too. I had to use a magnifying glass to see it, it's particularly hard to see on the ballistic back, but mine has one too. What first drew my attention to it was that one of the cases I was looking at had a hole in the same location.

Camera scratches easily? Fixable in any way?

I have a small mark on my Camera already, and I've been handling my camera with extreme care this whole week/weekend thus far. I already have a pretty small scratch (not across the lens thankfully?) and I have no idea how it happened! Been moving my phone around very gently.
Is there anything I can do about the tiny scratch, or do I just have to live with it? I get pretty OCD about small things like this, so I need to make sure there's nothing I can do to try and remedy the scratch before flipping out.
Thanks everyone.

The Silicone Sleeve sprint sold me for $11 after 25% off (Premier) and Tax lifts it up off any table
Relax. You and everybody else's phone will become dinged up. You are carrying it around with you all day everyday.
You can use the kickstand to keep it off the table or desk and use a case or pouch for carrying.
Use a liquid lens fixer like for glasses.
I cut a little piece from some old cheap screen protectors to cover mine. I'm sure there is some effect on the picture quality, but no current phone is going to compare to a Cannon anyway.
Resisting Lens Scratch
You can always buy a thick rubber washer and glue it around the camera lens. If you do not want to glue it, you can place it in between the cover and the phone. The solution is not fool proof, but it will work nicely to provide extra cushion and space. This solution is easy and cheap. The washer should not be to tight or small in diameter, so it does not interfere with the camera.

Placing a rubber washer between the battery cover and the phone, would not do anything to keep the camera lens from resting on the surface that would scratch it.

I was thinking something along the lines of this. Basically you just need a ring that rests around the lens.
Something similar to this comes to mind. Of course, you wouldn't need to have a new lens on it. Just a piece of metal.
This could be magnetic, or glued. You could probably rip the phone apart and replace the piece with a more protruding piece to do the same, but that's far more intrusive.
I'm sure we'll see commercial magnet like solutions for this. I mean, come on. A small magnetic ring is all we need. Someone is going to bank on that.
Or how about using hoverboard technology so the phone never touches anything, and hovers in midair? Geez people, buy a case.

Why cover the entire phone with a case when you can just put something around the lens?
I don't like cases. I think these devices were made to look and function in a certain way. If they "needed" a case it should have been built more robust.
I've had an iPhone 3G with no case for 2 years. I've also had no regrets.

It was sarcasm. I too, like mine naked, the way it was born. I have a leather case on my hip to put it in when I'm not using it. Jabbing at the fact that people actually want an accessory to attach to the camera lens ring just to keep it from touching another surface and getting scratched, like there should obviously be a market for that. Anyone that anal about possibly scratching a cellphone camera lens... I'm surprised they EVER pull the phone out to do anything at all. (again, sarcasm)

Haha yea. It's a camera on a phone... My DSLR is in it's nice cushy case. My phone will reside, albeit tightly, in my pocket.
I put mine in my pocket up until today, when I got my HTC leather hip case. I got tired of the pocket lint getting in the earpiece grill.
Tip: use Scotch tape and a blunt tipped object to get the lint out of there.

It's nice and snug. There's a hole on the bottom for your fingers to push the phone up to take it out. Magnetic flap, no metal button or anything, so no worries about phantom scratches. Stays close to the hip as well, and doesn't feel oversized or anything. Tight enough on the belt that I don't worry about it falling off.
Cool. I'll definitely check that out then. Thanks.

The one I have is from Sprint online: Part Number CFH2258R
I got a case for mine simply because I've dropped my iPod touch a few times and I'm pretty sure it'd be damaged by now if it didn't have a silicon skin, the EVO's camera worried me as well... The silicon skin Sprint sells seems a lil' bulkier than it has to be tho, and the button bumps aren't as defined as they could be (my iPod touch's skin actually made the buttons easier to press, quite the opposite here). I'm waiting for a different more glossy/smooth skin from Amzer to ship before I decide if I'll just go naked or what...

Simples. If you are keeping it bare, just get Best Skins Ever skin. Takes all the "slipperyness" off.

Have you tried taking a bit of coarse sandpaper to the back and sides of the phone? It seems Sony forgot to do this as the last step of manufacturing and that's why it is so slippery. I did mine and now the phone has a nice grip to it.
Good lord!
Mmmm, this phone has kept amazing me on how it squirms over every surface I place it on. The other day I put it on a soft leather loungechair next to me. In the middle of the cushion no less. Watching TV and *thump* as it slides off the leather onto
the floor.

Yes. Mine is fraying on a few points on the sides. 2-3 months of use. Not very visible, but will only get worse.
I don't care too much, but it can be annoying.
Bought mine on release day. It is still perfect.

Mine is great, bought on release day. No lint gets trapped in it or anything.
I clean mine occasionally, but no frays since I bought it several months ago.
No case either.
That's good to hear, is the nylon stained at all after exposure to any sort of liquids or dirt?
I clean mine daily, toting it around @ work it gets dusty dirty. A few months ago i had one little fray, burned it back with a lighter and all is good.
I usually clean it with windex electronic wipes, but have used industrial hand wipes that have citrus degreaser and lanolin in them with no discoloration or other issues.
I'm hard on phones and this phone looks damn near new, compared to my company issued note 4 I got two months after I i got the turbo. They both ride in laptop bag pockets, cup holders in filthy work trucks etc.
Im really happy with the durability. Im caseless btw.

I've had mine since release day. No issues. I use a case a couple days a week depending on what I'm doing. But you shouldn't be all that concerned. You can get replacement nylon backs for pretty cheap online.
To jump onto this topic, what's under the nylon? Like if it were to all come off, would the back just be exposed? Is there some plastic under there?

From what I see from all the replacement parts I am coming to the conclusion that I the back would just be exposed. The nylon appears just to have a plastic frame, not a plastic base.

I've had my Turbo since launch day, and have never used a case. I have a small amount of fraying on one side, and a small amount around both the Moto logo and the camera cutouts. The rest of the back still looks perfect While it doesn't look brand new, it still looks pretty great and I don't really have any complaints.
I was also worried that it would become a faded mess, or a lint trap. No issues with either. I keep the phone in my jeans 90% of the time, and it only has a small amount of lint/dust trapped in the backing. It's not enough to bother me, so I haven't tried to clean the back. Sounds like other people have had success doing so, though.
I've had mine since December 10th and its still perfect. I don't use a case or anything and usually carry it in my pocket
got my first on launch day and it started fraying...
received a replacement and now it seems fine but have since put a case on it.
Never had a case, got it at release and looks brand new. No hint of fraying, wear or dirt.

Correct. It's a plastic frame around Kevlar and epoxy then the ballistic nylon is glued to the Kevlar.
On a side note, if you have any type of "fray" that's any color but black, it's not a fray. Its lint or something. The nylon is pure black. Or whatever color you have. The color of the nylon is added in production and not dyed after.
Add me to the fray camp. Started about a month in. Logn before I ever dropped it. One was kind of bad, and there were 2 other spots. I took some pics with my DSLR for DroidForums (since deleted unfortunately) and it was there I really saw more fraying down the edge, very slight like little tiny hairs.
I ordered one of these and I am very happy with the results.... no tramp stamp!
Can't post links but Aliexpress... For-Motorola-moto-maxxXT1225-XT1250-Black-Original-Battery-Cover
Then you have a spare
The nylon on my Turbo has been holding up much better than I thought it would (got it shortly after launch, so over 4 months old). There's virtually no fraying and cosmetically the back still looks great. I'm quite happy with it.

So I got the silicon back after all of the ravings and I'm not really feeling it. I like the feel of the silicon but the raised grooves just aren't for me.
For those who went with the leather, is it soft at all? I haven't really heard too much depth about how it feels from those who got it. Can you even tell that it is leather? Does it seem slippery to sweaty hands? Thanks for any input.
I am more concerned about the leather dissipating heat. I would think the wood and then leather dissipate heat better than silicone.
2014 was leather. Loved it, but after reading all the good things about the new silicon backs i decided to go that route. Plus, the leather was a bit slippery, so i figured with the bigger phone the silicon back would help with the grip. Can't wait to finally get it.
I ordered the leather, I'm excited to try something different. Plus I already have a white oak and walnut back on my Mi4.

If you want to keep it slippery, try some diluted lye. It may cause some discoloration, but will render the oils into a really slick substance.
It might work on your phone, too.

Oh, I must be the party of one...I love the silicon back. The texture is different and pleasant. Maybe that's just compared to crappy silicon cases I usually have on my phones or the faux-leather backing of my Note Edge.
It also seems like it'll be durable. Naturally, it won't scratch like the back of most metal/glass phones, which often quickly renders a phone unattractive and unsellable.

I just got my phone yesterday with the leather back. It is not hard like plastic, but has a slight amount of squishyness. Not much though. It is more slippery than I thought it would be, but overall I like it. As far as head dissipation, I'm not sure that the back material will make much of a difference, and my phone so far is staying cool unless I am charging the battery.
While waiting, I was second guessing my decision to get the soft grip over the leather, but I really like it. I would order the same again.

Case, Bumper or Naked?

I'm still waiting on my "being Built" Moto Maker X Pure. Bamboo and black.
This phone having such customization potential, I'm curious what the majority of you are doing about cases. I've always used a case, but I want to show of my wood back and color choices.. and personally, I'm kind of hoping that it's tough enough to risk using naked daily.
What do you think?
Oh, and I'm likely to keep this for a long time and reselling is not something I'm worried about.
I would go with a clear case, still shows the wood and protects the phone.
I'm either going to get a transparent/translucent case or a good quality bumper. I ended up going for the soft back rather than the leather so I'm more likely to get the case.
Personally, wouldn't keep the phone naked. At the very least, use the provided bumper for some sort of protection.

Right now I'm just using the included bumper and a clear skin on the back. It works, but I'll probably move to a clear case once more become available. The clear skin looks fairly good, but it does make the bamboo look a little too shiny.

Xtremeguard... They're having like a 90% off sale. Its OK. Doesn't cover from edge to edge...which is fine, otherwise the bumper would probably peel it off. It will protect it from scratches for now though. Adds a little grip, but not as much as I had hoped.

I saw this one from another post in a different forum: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0154AQ3QK...colid=MDU2I2LQJJCF&coliid=INJ1ZBZYSLR2L&psc=1 looks decent.

I had that case when I had my Nexus 6. I loved it. Felt great in the hand. That's what I was thinking of going with.

Ya, if I remember correctly it was a little difficult on the N6 but not terrible. I'd think it'd be OK on this phone.
I bought this one
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012Y81GXA?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00
It sais to preorder but i ordered it and it came in the mail already, dont know if they only made a few or something, you could always email the seller and ask.
Im extremely impressed with it. I bought it as a cheap case to put on till i have more options. My only criticism was that it was a little loose on the sides, so what did i do ? I boiled it! thats right, i looked it up online and people boil tpu cases to shrink them a little. I boiled it in water for 3 minutes. it fits alot more snug now, still not perfect but close enough
I went with an otterbox so my kids dont break my phone
FYI - I've had the included "bumper" on my MXPE almost continuously since I received it.
I removed the bumper yesterday and, to my dismay, found nicks/pits in the longer metal edges of the phone. It looks like the anodized coating has worn away to show the brighter metal beneath (I have the dark grey/titanium metal color). I also noticed upon receipt that there was a slight chip in the finish at the edge of the SIM card door.
Fortunately my MotoMaker re-do unit is on its way to me (decided to go with wood instead of soft-touch), but I'm somewhat disappointed with the robustness of the metal finish. I almost wonder if this is why the "bumper" was packaged with the phone - though it looks like it might've done more harm than good by trapping scratchy debris.
Bottom line - I usually carry my phone naked except with a glass screen protector, but I'm wondering if this MXPE is going to need at least an edge bumper.
(I haven't fully scoured the forums to see if this is a known problem, but I certainly hope the finish on my re-do unit is more durable.)
I'm going naked, I have moto care so I think I will go naked with this phone. So often cases seem to cause more wear than without so I will keep it "pure"

Im trying that too, but I am only a month in and I already am seeing spots on the back where it seems that the varnishing is being removed? Have you noticed this yourself?
See-through case, fits like a glove - not loose. The best combination for me personally, the phone is still 100% visible but protected to some degree. Also I find soft silicone cases add more grip to what would otherwise be a slippery phone.
I-blason clear case from Amazon. Very happy with it.

I'm currently using the i-blason clear case as well, and I'll second it as good option. I had decent drop onto a hard surface over the weekend, and the phone was no worse for the wear. I also have the Casemate naked tough case coming as well, which should be even better. I'm someone that likes to have a variety of cases (although with this phone I'm probably going to stick with clear ones), so I will probably end up getting a bumper or two as well. I don't think the included bumper is quite as bad as a lot of people said it was, but it fits kind of loose and I can see it breaking with a good drop. As much as I enjoy going naked with the phone, I didn't get Moto care, and the wooden back I got is fairly slippery, and I don't trust myself not drop it occasionally.
I have noticed that the clear bumper that came with the phone has started to scratch the very edges of the rounded glass. I'm going naked now. I don't use screen protectors and generally don't use cases or bumpers. I've never had a problem with scratching my devices. I also never resell my phones (I usually gift them to family members, friends, etc.), so slight scratches aren't a deal breaker for me.
I love this phone in its bare form :good:
