[Q] Breaking into a locked device - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
This is a strange request but desperate times call for desperate measures. My father recently got himself a new Samsung Galaxy S5 here in Australia, unfortunately a tragic motorcycle accident on the 1st of this month led to my father no longer being with us. This was heartbreaking for my family and I, I now have in my possession his phone, It is still operational from what I can gather, it still rings, still vibrates when hooking up to my laptop and it detects it. The screen is completely smashed and doesn't work and the phone is locked. I want to be able to access the phone to recover any photos etc he has on the phone itself, I am unaware of what type of screenlock is on it.
So far I tried Samsung Kies but due to the phone being locked I can't use that,. Nothing shows up on the phone in windows explorer. I've downloaded [email protected] and android studio and have tried to get that to show up so I can see whats on the screen and attempt to use android control to unlock the phone but so far I've had no such luck. I need usb debugging enabled but I'm going to have to assume its disabled and thus proving my attempts so far to be fruitless.
If anyone can give me any ideas or things to try I'm all ears, I'm ok with computers so should be able to figure out most things but this is my first exposure to these types of applications.
Kind regards,
Eric.

First of all, I'm really sorry for your loss..
If he had a microSD card in his phone, it's likely that his pictures (and other documents) are on the card.
If that's the case, unless he encrypted the content, you should be able to just remove the microSD card and read it on your computer with a card reader.

Eric, do you have a MHL adaptor & HDMI tv?
You can view the screen on this via tv.

If I understand well he is able to see the screen but cannot pass the security lock. If that's the case try to connect the phone to your PC and copy all the internal SD card, I think you will be able to access the content. Also not sure if a factory reset will deactivate the screen lock but you can try it in an ultimate attempt.

It depends on the type of security lock.
If it's swipe, then he can see the content by connecting the phone to the PC, but not if it's a password, fingerprint, pin, ...
He would have to unlock the screen before the files are available.

Sorry to hear of your loss, especially at this time of year.
The idea of copying the SD card is the first step. If I read you're message right you can't see the screen at all?? I would take the device to a repair shop and get the screen replaced - tell them very clearly NOT to wipe / reset the device. Then you should be able to see the screen and might be able to figure out the screen lock. If the fingerprint reader was used there will always be an alternative password, you might be able to reset this to the gmail account used on the phone (assuming you have access to this?).
Hope you get it sorted.

I copied all of the sd card and as it was copying it died, so I have most of the data off that.

No I don't have the adaptor but I do have a HDMI tv, so I will investigate this, thank you.

Cannot see the screen, and when I connect it to pc to check if there is anything on the phone itself, It won't let me as the phone is keypad/swipe/fingerprint locked.

I took it to a repair shop, its a catch 22 situation, They want $150 to pull the data off the phone, and if there is no data of use then thats a waste of money, They wants $240 to replace the screen, the phone has a very slight bend in it so if I replace the screen the phone still may not be able to be used properly so again would be a waste of money.
This is the main reason why I am trying to at least view the screen to ascertain what lock is used, I do have his gmail credentials so I can reset from there, from what I understand resetting the phone also loses any data (messages, pictures, etc) that is on the actual phone.
Last but not least thank you to everyone so far for your replies, I really appreciate you all taking the time to reply and try to help!
Regards,
Eric.

No worries.
Do you know if he was using Cerberus or Theftspy or another anti theft tool?
If he did and you can find out his credentials, you should also be able to unlock the phone with a command (at least Cerberus does that) or even transfer all the data to a cloud (dropbox, google drive,...).

Could he not physically open the phone and get to the actual sd card that the phone comes with that the OS and all that is on? Or is that locked down?

I had a idea for the lock screen but it will not help with seeing which you would have to deal with first. Any chance he left Gmail loged on any computer you have access to. You could try installing a app to bypass the lock screen.
I have never tried this one it was just the first I found that fit my theory of a workaround, although you could look around for a free one that may be better then you wouldn't have to worry about passwords to do the purchase.

If you know his samsung account information, you can login to their web service and remove the lockscreen passcode. From there, you should be able to USB the files off of it.

I am looking for a way to open my son's phone. He died 2 months ago and I would like to get his pictures and music off his phone. The problem is I don't know his login password I have tried several but did not work. I only have 2 more times I can try before his phone resets which I don't want it to do! I'm sorry if this has been asked before. I am not much of a technology person. I am just a very sad mom who would like to unlock her sons phone:crying: Can anyone help me? his phone is a droid razr m.

Unfortunately I don't think that it is possible
unless bootloader is unlocked?
Is there a SD card? it's possible that some photos are on that,
if it's not encrypted, you can remove the sd card, and us an adapter to connect to pc

Just curious is the phone service still active on the phone? If it isn't remove the sim card. It is located on the side opposite of the power/volume buttons the micro SD card is right next to it under the same panel. Be sure to power the device off before removing either cards! The only reason I say remove the sim if there is no active service I have seen Verizon try to lock a device out if it has a not active sim card in it
There are a couple of ways that it is possible. The best way is to log in to the device manger via the computer hopefully you know his email address and password or he set the computer that he would use to auto login into his gmail account that is attached to his phone.

If there's a pattern lock on the phone I might have a way to unlock it but it would require the phone to be rooted at least, preferably bootloader unlocked (but not essential).

Screen broken, need help wiping.

Hey guys/gals,
Dropped my phone yesterday and now the screen is completely gone. I was able to back everything up. I had planned on wiping it this morning, but apparently it had some mad LCD bleed and I can't see anything any more.
I had Vysor running yesterday (control your phone from Chrome browser), but now it seems to not be working (I didn't change any settings). I had USB debugging enabled...at least I thought.
I suppose I could just put it into Download Mode/Recovery, I come from 4 years of Samsung devices, so I was using Odin before.
Any chance someone could throw up some screen shots for any screens I'd have to interact with...driving blind.
Thanks
P.S. I did do an "erase" from Android Device Manager. It does say that I would see the Android Welcome Screen next time I turn the device on...haha, except I won't either way
I suppose I'll know if it is erased if the fingerprint reader stops giving me haptic feedback and turning on the device (can see a slight image on the bottom right).
Just boot into download mode, then use ADB to flash the factory image. It will tell you if it works or not.
Thanks Geoff, got that done.

Hey sorry for the necro but cant seem to get any help on this. If you cant see ANYTHING on the screen, how do you know what mode you are in after you boot to recovery? It seems the default options are always different so how do you ensure you are at the right option to use ADB or anything else? I need to make 100% sure the phone is wiped before I sell it.

just use android device manager and wipe it but you will probably need to tell buyer your account and password after they fix it to get in it then change your password again https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiwzPL1-tjXAhVDPN8KHab3CCAQFggoMAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fandroid%2Ffind&usg=AOvVaw18MrvVnXQpTGzGjml46v_F

I been trying ADM and it is not detecting my phone... I am pretty sure I am logged into my phone but again its hard to be 100% sure. Doesnt your phone have to be on and logged in for this to work? Or does your old sim card have to be in for it to work? I already put my sim card into the new phone, but dont wanna screw up my account or "new" phone by messing around with the sim. I've read somewhere else that it worked without it.

Ok I think we are missing some info here....
I already got a new 6P and put my SIM card in that
In the Google options to wipe it shows the phone in 2 different names, I think one is my very old Samsung S4, but the 6P
When I clock on the old 6P, it tries to find it but results "Can't Reach Device"
When I click on ERASE it results in:
"ERASE Your device has been erased If your device is offline, erasing will begin when it next comes online. You'll need to sign in to your Google Account to use the device again."
Now that sounds great, but since I cannot see anything, how do I know whats going on as far as if it did it, will it be safe for me to sell this phone now, etc, etc.... I cannot login to a phone I cant see or check out whats going on on it.
I hope this makes sense... maybe I am sounding paranoid but I am sure you know how it is if you have any valuable or personal data in your phone and are selling it.
Thanks so much.

Screen doesn't work anymore! Please Help!

Hello there,
today, it just happened out of the blue, my pretty new S7 does only show up a blank grass green screen now! It can be turned off and on, touch works. I just can't see anything at all anymore. I really need a way to mirror the screen to the PC or something... USB debugging is not active :crying:. There are some apps installed, I need to use because I have to create the backup files in them!
What would be the easiest way to get access to this?
The phone is connected to my WiF if that helps.
Thank you so much!

If you can aquire a mhl cable for your s7 you will be able to output the video output of the s7/edge to a tv/display. Just search mhl cable for s7 edge on amazon or ebay and you should be good to go.
Edit: just read the s7 and the s7 edge don't support mhl so you might be out of luck.
@Rydah805 I want to backup my data .... and I don't think that would help at all. The screen is pretty much done.
@amar95353 I read online that there is no more MHL support on the S7 anymore.

Your SOL on data. You can try SmartSwitch on PC but even then you'll need to approve the backup via the phone.

Original answer deleted. I'm a complete idiot. I should have checked but believe I was given incorrect information from my sprint sales person on location of reset. Sorry.
I turned off the phone many times.
Phone works fine, just the screen doesn't. I found a lot of forum posts for this problem it seems common...
I didn't root this phone.
Now, I finally know what's the hole for LMAO! What does happen if I poke it? Update: Hey, that hole is not used for resetting the phone. It's for noise reduction.
I don't think this will help on a broken screen anyway.
slaldrich said:
i assume you turned your phone completely off and on again (not just the screen).
If you did that, did you try a reset? There is a little hole on the top of your phone and in your box, you received a little tool. Poke the hole and hold it in until something happens (a few secs). This sort of reset is like pulling the battery. You should not lose any data in doing this.
If you created this problem by trying to root your phone unsuccessfully... Then you will probably need to odin new stock software.

please dont put anything in that hole. This is not a reset button............... ITS A MICROPHONE and that tool its design to open the sim card bay.
Don't worry, I wont do that.
I'm so stuck here... and also I need to send this phone to T-Mobile! Right now I 'm using an iPad as a phone replacement. lol
Just wish I could save this data...
Is your screen experiencing this?
http://i.imgur.com/iOmtR2T.jpg
If so, it's a defective screen.
I got mine replaced already since it was under 30 days replacement guarantee. You can read more about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3359221
But the bad news is you won't be able to backup anything. I had to sacrifice a lot of stuff as well.
This is exactly what my screen does look like! And I did not only had problems with the screen, I wasn't able to get my carrier's settings automatically, I have problems with the charging, it won't display my phone number in the settings and also sometimes the camera app freezes. I installed the updates which didn't change anything. This new smartphone which doesn't even has a tiny scratch, never fall down is totally wrecked. Really disappointed about this "top high end" phone. I don't trust, that it will work after they "repeard it". I have it since release.
It's like really a huge amount of data... Of one app it is everything from 2 years (7GB)! There is no possibility to create a backup, you can just send the data to a new phone via WiFi that's all. If your phone breaks everything is lost.
I realized many app developers don't take enoughh care of backup solutions.
Yesterday the screen got back to life but just for a short moment
So it seems like there is no way to get back this data...
Can I get back my WhatsApp backup at least? I was able to create a backup before the screen died. When I plug in the phone to PC I can see "Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge" in my explorer an that's about it. When I click on it there is no content to show.
I just got an idea how to enable the god damn USB debugging!
Can someone share here how to connect the device as a mass storage to PC (by screenshots please)!
I was just thinking, I can work my way to the Developer Options by taking screenshots but I need to access the media for this!
When I connect the device to PC and then click on Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge it's empty... There most be done something before.
Thanks!
You guys can call me a ****ing genius! I managed to install Teamviewer by taking screenshots and look at them on the PC (I set up the device as mass storage blindly) so I knew what to do next. It was still tricky but possible.
I'm recovering my data now.
Thanks to the Google voice app I was able to type in "Teamviewer"
Thank you anyway!

It wasn't really easy dude... The most difficult was to make this damn thing work as a mass storage device. So I could finally have access to the data on the Windows Explorer.... I was just touching on the screen like a maniac!
But this is a way to do it guys. If you own a Galaxy S7 Edge I recommend to activate USB debugging and install Teamviewer quick support (Samsung version, there are different editions) just in case the screen breaks. lol I install Teamviewer on all my devices now...
Hey! The same thing just happened to my phone an hour ago. Green grassy screen. It's terrible!
Ok, so what were the steps you took in order to get to where you can turn on USB debugging and backup your phone?
Well, what happens when you connect your phone to your Computer (USB)? If nothing, then you need to check connect the device as camera or mass storage, blindly! Which is kinda tricky... You need to pull down your notification bar and then select the USB options thing and in this menu which pops up you need to select camera or mass storage... But once you get that done, you're good to go! You will be able to take screenshots and view them on your computer instantly. You don't really need to care about USB debugging, you can just get Teamviewer Quick Support (for Samsung) that is really important, the normal version won't work!

Thanks for the reply. It actually looks like my issue was much worse. My phone degraded pretty quickly, since I wrote my post. It got to a point that while I could type on my lockscreen, it wouldn't go past and enter the OS. I didn't even have a green screen anymore, the screen turned to an off black. At that point, I gave up and sent it in for repairs. I think the motherboard got fried.

Forgot Pin on Mom's Phone

Hi,
So today I changed the pin for my mom's phone and the completely forgot it.
She has a lot of Photos on the phone that she wants to keep, but she has not turned on the backup to google photos option
Is there a way to unlock the phone or recover the photos ?
I have entered the wrong pin multiple times and I still cant see the forgot password option.
Pls help or else mom will kill me.
I hope there is no solution because it would be big security problem.
Your mother maybe using google photos cloud so dont be worry
This poses a security risk for those who lost their phones, so I hope there's no easy way around it.
RIP OP
I also hope there isn't a remedy. I don't mean to sound negative and not help but look at it from our side.
I once had a phone that needed a pin to unlock after being fully booted. Was able to go into recovery without it though.
But on 6t I think the pin encrypts the partition, so no way of bypassing it.
[irony] Maybe tell some intelligence agency that there is terrorist evidence on the phone, see if they have a "special key". [/irony]

[irony] Maybe tell some intelligence agency that there is terrorist evidence on the phone, see if they have a "special key". [/irony]

I agree.
Can you not plug in your USB cable and copy the contents off the phone onto your laptop?

Not without unlocking and enabling USB transfer
Just to be sure, it is the pin for the phone and not the simcard right?

Get your plot ready then.
You have to format data.
Hopefully you can remember the password or pin.
There is far to many security measures in place
you could by having USB debugging on don't know if it's against rules to tell you or just have them email you don't they still email the password to email reg. on phone
There is simply NO way to access the contents without the encryption key. No app from google that claims it can, not google, not even the NSA or anyone but the key holder can. Trust me, you messed up and there is no other way but to remember what it was or completedly reset the phone. After you reset you will be asked password for the account that was last used there. not worth even trying mate.
I wouldnt normally try to help in a situation regarding security but check out this link: Bypass lock screen PIN all One Plus Devices! Might help!
Good luck and let us know how it turns out :highfive:
That worked for me! Thanks so much!

Not really for 6T. File Based Encryption that's used by OnePlus doesn't help here either. There may be a way for OnePlus 6 tho since it uses a different key to sign its boot image.
It may be possible to change current password by using Google Find My Device (https://www.google.com/android/find), but i haven't used it for a long time so i'm not sure at this point.

Broken Phone HELP PLZ ?*♂️

Hi, so I recently smashed the H*** out of my Essential Phone. I put my sim in my wife's old Nexus to try and get back into the Gmail account I've had for 10+ years, and they've forced 2 step verification onto my account and will not let me use my number for recovery. The ONLY way to complete this verification is to use my Broken Essential Phone to accept screen prompt. So here's my question... I was rooted, with TWRP and Custom rom but do have Full Back ups on my computer, so if I were able to get another essential phone and root it, would I be able to then restore the factory image and back ups I had created for this old essential phone onto the new device and gain access to my Gmail account that way, or am I totally out of luck unless I fix my smashed phone enuf to get to the screen on to accept screen prompt to verify my identity....? Any insight here is greatly appreciated. I have 1000's of $$ invested in that Gmail and have been unable to access it for a week now. Google has been zero help. Sorry if. This is posted in the wrong space, I haven't been here in a while.

A few years back you used to be able to get a new phone install TWRP create a backup on new phone and then copy the files from the old phones backup into the new backup folder (with the new unique file number). But think I read this doesn't work anymore on new version (but not sure you'll have to check yourself or hopefully someone here knows)
Even if that works what type of 2FA is it? Authenticator or SMS?
https://support.google.com/accounts/troubleshooter/4430955?hl=en
without a backup code it may not work anyhow
if you can see your screen but touch is not working just plug a mouse into the usb & click away! If screen is blacked out but rest of hardware good easiest to buy a replacement screen as cheap or use usb-hdmi hub to mirror screen (not sure if Essential phone requires any input to set up as haven't tried with this phone)
If other hardware damage it will depend, but as rooted you are in with a chance. Is usb debugging on?
Thanks for your response, Google has been zero help and I've definitely considered ordering a screen to see if I can get the old device to work, but the og screen is detached from the chip board, as far as I can tell it will power on with some serious prompting, but idk if it's actually trying to boot up or in some kind of safe mode detecting the screen is missing, or just wrecked completely...? Lol the notification Light stays red until the battery dies. I've considered maybe trying to clone the esn of my old essential phone to another phone to try to trick their servers that way but idk if they recognize the device via that (The ESN) or tokens generated locally on the device, and the more I think about it, the more I think the latter sounds more logical considering the nature of the beast I'm fighting here... Seems It would b wildly irresponsible of them to rely solely on esn to identify a "Trusted" device. Idk what to do, lol except cry... I'm basically at a loss at this point, so I will order a screen and go from there I guess, if the screen option doesn't work. You'd think with the money they have, they'd have some type of account recovery team, or a way to recover in the event something like this happens, or someone to speak to at the very least, the can verify my account in seconds over the phone, but do literally nothing for me, nor let me speak with or point me towards anyone who can.... And this is a pretty common issue it seems after lookin at their "Community help section" it's literally top to bottom ppl complaining about what I'm looking to "get help" with. There is zero reason they should be forcing 2fv on my account it's shut off in my account settings, I can get far enuf to c them, just doesn't let me change anything with out "Signing in" and verifying. Nor does it give me the option to use my only ACTUAL set up recovery option on the account, a code via text. It's almost like theyre protecting all my own s***, from me. The owner. Makes zero sense to me.
It sounds like when you setup the essential, you configured your Google account to use the *device* (via the Google app) for verification. I've done this also, but I have an old device also configured to authenticate. So the pop-up screen appears on both.
If you use a computer to log into your Google account (not gmail) on the screen that is waiting for verification, there should be a link to try a different method. Hopefully you setup a secondary email address in addition to the gmail account one.

OT: I realize you are frustrated, but it would be easier to pick out the relevant information in your posts if they were not one long paragraph.
