[Q] Recent Bootloader Unlock and root access guides - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone, I'm a brand new member with a couple questions.
I have read many threads here and elsewhere and have recently found two possible sources of information to help me finally unlock my boot loader > backup nandroid > flash cyanogenmod. Profit.
My Droid Razr M has root access. System Version: 98.18.94.XT907.Verizon.en.US / Android JB 4.1.2 / Build Number 9.8.1Q-94
Wen I started, I got used to the idea of staying with JB 4.1.2. It has worked well over the year. And having root and Titanium Backup has given me great power over my phone.
I would like to ask if it is possible to both root and unlock the newer KK 4.4.2 using the these methods I have found and my phone.
First PrankCallPimp youtube guide states I need to flash from JB 4.1.2 to Verizon stock KK 4.4.2 using RSDLite
Second Mr. Blue Coat provides a better stepwise guide outlining root access and unlock procedures, but starting with KK 4.4.2. Very Complete Blog.
I have assembled all of the files these sources suggest to have on hand during the project.
Additional questions. Is PrankCallPimp's method to flash to KK 4.4.2 using VZW_XT907_4.4.2-KDA20.62-10.1_CFC_1FF.xml files in RSDLite correct? His video cuts out after a while. After flashing KK 4.4.2 the phone will be similar to a factory reset and be susceptible to OTA updates. Currently I use Voodoo OTA to prevent updates. Should I reinstall Voodoo OTA to prevent Verizon pushed updates or go from there to root access and boot loader unlock procedures?
I have never liked following a youtube guide and wonder if there is a printed version I could review before starting. Also I installed RSDLite and my phone can be detected by the program.
I think if Mr. Blue Coats guide is acceptable to everyone, I could follow it with no problems.
What I'm worried about is giving up my currently profitable root access on JB 4.1.2 to go to KK 4.4.2.
It seems that if I really want an unlocked boot loader, I must take KK 4.4.2
If these two guides work, with someone's help, I would be happy to join them into a single clear guide to post here.
I lack the experience most of you have so I'm reaching out with these questions before I even consider going through with this.
Thanks All. Ps. I'm in no hurry.

Read this thoroughly

Thank You
Thank you for the ultrafast help!
There was my answer: 4. RESTORING / UPGRADING STOCK FIRMWARE.
And all the additional tools required for root access and boot loader unlock.

[Q] Unlocking Bootloader through Flashtool with Custom Kernel?

Quick question about unlocking the bootloader. (I'm a bit of a noob )
I'm running ZMOD 2.3.3 which uses a custom kernel. However when reading the flashtool FAQ it says the requirements for unlocking the bootloader through flashtool are:
kernelversions=2.6.29,2.6.29-00054-g5f01537
androidversions=2.1,2.2,2.3
needroot=true
compatibledevices=X10,E10,E15,U20
I'm guessing I'll need a default/standard kernel installed and possibly leave the ROM unrooted before I can do this? So should I install a vanilla 2.3.3 ROM which should switch the kernel back to default and then proceed to unlock the bootloader (I don't have to bother changing the baseband)?
Thanks in advance.

Just revert back to stock rom and you'll be fine.
Thank you for the quick reply.
So by that you mean the stock 2.1 ROM be fine, as I won't need a functioning baseband?

But that link doesn't discuss using flashtool as far as I can see.
What it need to know is how do I put my phone into a state whereby I can use flashtool to unlock it.
I'm first going to stick my phone onto the generic 2.3.3 ROM from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746&highlight=2.1.A.0.435
(the download multiupload.com link is dead )
Just flash a stock firmware, put your phone in usb-debugging mode, then turn on the latest flashtool and root it then unlock bootloader.
Got it.
Many thanks.
edit: hmmm I ran the bootloader unlock and this happened:

[Q] i9505 4.4.2 update + root

I'm currently using 4.3 android and there's no official 4.4 update yet. What I want to do is upgrade to 4.4.2, then root it. I looked for solutions but they all seem dangerous to me, a beginner.
Cf auto root says that if my bootloader is locked, I risk bricking the device. How do I check if it's locked or not?
How can I backup everything so that IF something goes wrong I can go back to stock?
Where can I get the CORRECT firmware / android version 4.4.2 for the i9505?
My baseband number is XXUEMK9 and the phone is factory unlocked. I basically need to be spoonfed with baby explanations if possible.

Hi there,
4.4 update came out a few days ago.......There are plenty of links around to download and flash via odin....THIS is just one of them.
If you are looking at flashing custom ROMS then root is generally not necessary as most custom ROMS will root your device. Only a custom recovery is needed. Philz and TWRP are the most popular. A search in xda will help you find them.
I encourage you to do ALOT more reading and research before doing anything unfamiliar to your device as only you are responsible for it!!

Galaxy S4 CyanogenMod

Hi,
Im having fast battery drain issue with my AT&T S4, I read on forums that by installing Cyanogenmod can improve battery performance. Now before installing Cyanogenmod I would like to ask some questions.
1. Will I be able to go back to stock from Cyanogenmod ?
2. Which version of Cyanogenmod should I download ? I think v11 gives better battery result.
3. Will this completely uninstall all bloatware from samsung and at&t
4. Will I get more Internal space ? Currently I have 9 gb out of 16 gb
Also I have rooted by mobile using this Guide
Phone Specification
AT&T S4 SGH I337
BOOTLOADER : I337UCUFNJ4
PDA : I337UCUFNJ4
CSC : I337ATTFNJ4
BASEBAND : I337UCUFNJ4
KERVEL VER : 3.4.0-2960651
ANDROID : 4.4.4
BUILD NO. : KTU84P.I337UCUFNJ4
Thanks
You will also need a custom recovery in order to flash a custom rom.
You should be able to return back to stock rom with Odin.
Yes, flashing a custom rom will remove all Samsung and AT&T apps from the phone.
No, you will not get more internal storage. 9GB user space is all you get with the S4.
Regarding your battery drains. Make sure the battery is still good. If it is swollen you should consider getting a new battery.
Thank you for your reply.
Could you please elaborate the first line. How do I know if I have custom recovery ?
You would've known if you had one because custom recoveries are usually flashed by the user. Since you don't recall flashing any then you don't have one (custom one).
Unless it was part of that tutorial and you flashed it unknowingly
Problem is, your phone has a locked bootloader. This makes the whole process more complicated.

The tutorial I followed to gain root access was like flashing nc1 kernel than use towel root and than flashing back to nj4 kernel. This is what I did to gain root access.
Now can I install cynagenmod in my mobile. If not than is there any extra step I need to perform to install cynagenmod ?
Thanks

Yes. I told you that it requires a custom recovery in order to flash a custom rom to your phone.
Normally flashing a custom recovery is simple. But since your phone is an AT&T model, it has a locked bootloader.
Download and follow the instructions from here.
Good luck.
You should note that this may not work on your device due to the locked bootloader. Then you will have to find another method.

Has anyone been able to ROOT their SM-n910v Marshmallow 6.0.1?

Build MMB29K. I've tried and can't get TWRP loaded on there. I just bought this phone, but thinking about sending it back and keeping my rooted Note 3 if I can't get this to root! Here is the partial link to my post on Reddit about this same topic:

Right if u took the ota you are locked as far the bootloader goes ....flashing will not be possible til this is corrected ....im told u can odin back to 5.1.1 which has a pretty easy method the safely upgrade so rooting and unlock are simplified. I never tried to rooting from the stock firmware.... does kingroot ever get u rooted? If so the u could try the aforementioned method but u would need a 6.0.1 compatible kernel (Sprint) given u r on there dev cid .
in the verizon note 4 form is where you should be looking because you have a locked bootloader.

CQA1 Firmware *safe upgrade* SM-N910V

This is just a safe upgrade to the latest CQA1 firmware for the SM-N910V. If you are already on 6.0 with an unlocked bootloader you can flash this to update. It will not lock your bootloader or overwrite your custom recovery. I slightly debloated it but other than that it's completely stock and still odexed.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Boot to recovery and do a complete wipe (everything except your internal and external sd card)
- Power off device and pull battery for at least 3 seconds
- Boot into Download mode and connect phone to your computer
-Start Odin and place the tar file in the AP slot
-Once Odin says it's ready just press start and let it do it's thing
CQA1 FIRMWARE DOWNLOAD
If you would like to run stock you can download and flash SuperSu for root and also Busybox by Osmosis
Thanks will try later!
Thanks, I'll give it a look over.

No buddy there isn't. The issues you'll have will vary when trying to upgrade the firmware without updating the bootloader. Mostly wifi related and brightness issues. All of the safe upgrades remove the aboot so it wouldn't update your bootloader.
Delete - double post
OK, I am on BPA1. Lollipop - Marshmallow combo. Bootloader unlocked, root, etc. Running the 05/24/2016 Hsbadr CM 13.1 build. Can, I flash this and keep the unlocked bootloader or do I have to go through the whole downgrade to the BPA1 firmware, re-root and all that jazz? I just can't believe there is not an easier way to get to Marshmallow-Marshmallow since the bootloader is unlocked.

Yes . doesn't contain aboot :victory: but the bootloader didn't change it isn't necessary or particularly useful unless you wanted to builds a touchwiz based ROM and wanted to use the most recent base .

And no lol if you took the safe upgrade from 5.1.1 to 6.0.1 (via the lollipop ROM on marshmallow toolchain) you are currently on an up to date bootloader it is unneccesarry to repeat the unlock procedure and no this doesn't lock your bootloader . it isn't rooted however you would need to flash that but it is a one and done via twrp . kingroot wasn't needed.
successfully unlocked on 910V but want to know
Can I flash 910F stock firmware via odin on my unlocked verizon 910V note 4. I want to convert it to GSM phone. Should I need to install custom recovery or permanent root before for this. Or is it possible and safe to convert without loosing sim connectivity. Please help.
Hello everyone! Been quite a while since I've been on here. I have been on the Kyubi ROM since the BL unlock was achieved on our Note4. IMO, it has been a pretty stellar ROM. Been using it ever since. Now, I have decided to upgrade the device.
I want to upgrade to at least a 6.0 ROM and I am on 5.1.1 BL version is BPA1, PDA version is BOK3 and Baseband Version is BPA1 as well, rooted and BL is unlocked.
My question is can I do this "CQA1 Firmware *safe upgrade* SM-N910V" in the OP without any problems?
Thanks in advance for any and all help with this...

No, unfortunately there currently isn't an easier process than the one that is outlined in this thread. I had some different intentions with this firmware when I was putting it together and some personal stuff came up so I just posted it as is but you'll need to update your bootloader or you'll have wifi issues with the 6.0 roms.
It's my understanding, though I haven't tested it personally, that's not the case for the 7.0 aosp roms. From what I've read there's been people running those on the bpa1 bootloader.

So can you tell me if this is where I would start first, since I am on Baseband version BPA1 with root and Unlocked BL i copied the following below from the instructions from the link you provided.
"Extract and flash N910VVRU2BPA1_N910VVRU2CPD1_FullFirmware.tar.md5 via Odin
This will make you on Lollipop with Marshmallow bootchain/firmware/modem, which is rootable."
Sorry for the noob like questions. I've just been away too long and I really don't want to screw this up lol. I do appreciate all your help though.

No problem. Yes if you're already unlocked on bpa1 then just go ahead and Odin the firmware you mentioned (N910VVRU2BPA1_N910VVRU2CPD1_FullFirmware.tar.md5). Once you get that booted up then it's just a matter of repeating the same process as before with the LP bootloader. Keep in mind that you won't have wifi when you flash that firmware so you may want to have a copy of kingroot on your internal sdcard ready to go. Then I usually reference this post here on out. There's a couple threads on this subject but I feel like they have some unnecessary steps involved whereas that post really cuts to the meat of it in my opinion.
@kevintm78 Thanks so much. In your opinion, is there really any difference between LP and MM? I really do appreciate your help.
