Build quality of this phone - Xperia Z2 General

Hello,
so as a user of Xperia Z2 I have my rights to complain. This phone is nothing but amazing when it comes to functionality but sucks at build quality. My phone has a gaps around the frame of the display. At top right there is a small gap, on bottom left and on the left of the phone. These places, especially the gap in left side of display, collect dust and other trash. Also the USB flap is popping off all the time dispite having been cleaned and replaced by polish warranty service, propably because the phone's frame has a little arch in there. Also back of the phone had a bit of a move. It has been replaced by afore mentioned service and it does not sqeak anymore when pressed but the top of frame of the phone has been scratched in the process.
So my experience with service has been quite bad. They did replace back and USB flap(so they say but taking into the account it has had dust on silicon seal when I received it I am not so sure) but it left a scar on the phone. So the flap is popping off anyway, making phone not waterproof and annoying.
Now I would like to point out that I use magnetic charger so the port has not been opened too many times actually. Also sending the phone off for repair is not an option now because it will take them another 3 weeks time to repair it.
To be honest I wrote this to scare off some potential Sony buyers because build quality simply is not too good or at least make them check their new phones thoroughly and return if they are flawed.

Sorry for this bro
My xperia z2 i buy in Brazil,is perfectly build,no gaps no flaps coming out,i buy in pré order,i might be Lucky, ask for a total replacement if you have warranty, it might help

Got no buildproblems with my z2 that was bought back in September, but there could be some z2 with build quality issues as indicated by the op

you could post your problem here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2744197 + telling your batch number. If people from the service made any damage to your phone you have to complain about it and ask for a new device since it was not your fault... its kinda late now i guess.

I myself have always used Samsung phone in the past until this year when I got the Z2 after many hours reading and watching reviews. Never once did a read or watch a bad review regarding the build quality of the Z2.
For me, the Z2 totally outshines my previous Samsung phones on the build quality site of things. It totally feels like a premium device to me.

I have similar issues as well. Flaps pop out repeatedly after cleaning and replacement. Had gaps in phone, which caused water damage...

One of the reasons that gaps open itself (if they are clear with no dust in it) is the pressure in the phone that is coused in situations for example like in your pocket and you run/bend.Thats why when you drop it to the ground the flaps are opening to release the pressure. The water test which is provided in the menu of the Z2 have the same way of working as well - pressure determinate that if the phone is sealed and ready for a swim when you bend it abit. :highfive:

my Z2 has gaps in the corners on both front and back side
can it be waterproof with the gaps?

You just describe exactly what is happening with mine. Just the same issues.

Quite sad that Sony can't give you a well built phone for this price...To be honest after having Desire 816 for 3 weeks in the meantime as Sony was being serviced I started regretting that I didn't buy M8. It would be **** specwise compared to Sony but the build quality is just marvelous...Or wait for Z3. I think I could call myself Sony fan some time ago but now I am not so sure. Will have Z2 in mind when buying next phone in 1.5 year time.

Not trying to offend anyone but I believe that a great bunch of us XDA members are extremely anal about our devices.
Every device I've owned has had people complaining about the most minor of issues that no regular users ever hear of.
"MY PHONES CAMERA IS 0.01MM AWAY FROM BEING CENTRED, IS SONY FOR REAL, HOW COULD THEY DO THIS, BLAH BLAH"
I bought my Z2 being incredibly happy with the build quality and i still am.The metal/glass body is exceptional in terms of build quality. Compared to the plasticy build of the G3/other devices, our phone is amazing.
The issue is more of a quality control issue but the thing is that the "issues" we have are so very minor. The gaps form no actual issue, same with off centred camera (that i know of), the flaps popping off is an actual issue but i dont personally know anyone who has had this happen to them, only a few xda users. (Probably due to the constant opening for flashing purposes/other purposes)
Sending it back should fix it, and if it doesnt then send it back again.
Also, all phones have issues. Look on any other phone forum. Our phone is actually better off when compared to others in terms of quality control.

hi guys i want to buy this phone soon and i just wanted to check if the build quality issues i read about are real or not
1) do the flaps really pop up on their own? and if yes what has caused them to do so?is it a manufacturing error?
2) i read about some camera issues with not starting from lockscreen
3) some devices has reported that because of the size of the phone the device has suffered from cracks and niggles caused by the pressure while in pockets?
and please if u can give me your overall experience with the phone and should i buy it or not
p.s : i'm coming fro htc one m7 but the m8 is too expensive and i want to try sony now
thanks in advance to all

1. Not for me, most problems are there with early batches which are harder to comeby now
2. Camera seems to launch fine from lockscreen although a rather large delay
3. The self cracking issue i cant realy tell, my device undergoes my fat behind sitting on it also being extremly hot to cold, i left it in my freezer one time at -30 celcius for a hr and its fine

I agree with some of these issues arent realy issues
Ive had 4 Z2 replacements and i only had them replaced due to serious heating issues, large quantities of dead pixels and one if not both speakers being dead
Im happy with my off centre Camera and my dim led light and my single dead pixel
So Dear other users
If it doesnt affect your handling of the device its best to forget about it.

1. Not for me. Probably extreme use/excessive opening.
2. Nope. Perfect here.
3. Well i personally havent had this happen. I have dropped my phone onto concrete without a case while running from my pockets and its still perfect with literally only 1 small not noticble mark on the corner so i doubt itll crack from pressure in your pocket.
Go for the z2. Its a great phone imho.

4 Z2's?!?!? Holy sheet metal. Wow you are very unlucky. I personally have a 100% perfect no issues at all z2. If your current phone has issues, just keep returning it. I had 3 nexus 5's, all with various actual issues before i got a perfect one... then i water damaged it. Lmao

Finally, my 4th HD2, a FLAWLESS device !!

As you may have read before, I was really complaining because of the poor voicecall quality, screen alignment with the plastic cover and many other flaws. I have replaced my device twice and got each time a different problem. I decided not to give up...
Today, I got my 4th HD2 and the earpiece problem is GONE!!
The first thing I did was to have a look at the screen. It is perfectly flush/aligned with the cover. It used to be either deeper somewhere at the corners or higher.
The problem with the light sensor doesn't exist anymore and after more than 12 hours of extensive testing, I can say I don't have any problem with machine anymore. Finally a flawless HD2.
One thing I've noticed ( because I'm used to register all my devices the 1st day I buy it ) that the serial number is almost the same as the 1st device having too many problems, the difference is like 372 only and the 4th HD2 is even older than all the previous handsets ( Manufacture date: 2nd of Nov. 2009 )
I believe that this is not a problem with some specific affected batches. IMHO, it is random...
Hope that helped
I didn't follow your previous thread. Do you have a summary on the problems you encountered and may I ask how you proceeded with your reclamation? Was it directly with HTC or through your vendor?
I also notice that my screen isn't perfectly aligned with the cover, it's a bit of gap to the top right, whereas on the top left i don't feel any gap. This doesn't kill me but if there are handsets that are perfectly made, I want one when I'm paying this much money. I also encounter sparkling sounds when talking, specially when using the speaker.

Actually I was forced to sell the devices because they refused to consider the problems as well known... I lost around 100 Euros but got a good device after all... you know we all like perfectionism
Some of the problems like I mentioned :
-The screen not correctly aligned with the plastic cover
-Crackling and noisy earpiece when making voicecalls
-Very loose hardware keys and buttons. They are not rock solid now but way better
-Light sensor behavior was somehow weird. Doesn't always work, dont ask me why
- Screen jitters like the ones posted on youtube.

Yes, so as to be perfectly aligned after applying the screen protector. I installed mine two days ago and now the screen is perfectly aligned.

It's a glass screen, no protector is required. Most HD2 screens are flush with the rubber/plastic sides - there isn't a recess, I would say the ones that aren't flush are manufacturing defects.
I've had 2 HD2s so far and both have the earpiece issue. The 2nd had what felt like poor fitting keys initially, but over the week I've had the phone they've bedded in nicely and now have perfect feel.
I'm just going to put up with the earpiece quality for now, it's not perfect but I'm sure future ROMs will reduce the volume which should be a good start.
Ah Im glad you finally got one that works for you
Hope you enjoy it
Im loving mine Im not as much as a noob as I was when I first posted a month or so ago, where I got flamed
I think I only have the two following problems:
-The screen not correctly aligned with the plastic cover
-Crackling and noisy earpiece when making voicecalls
The buttons are a bit loose but I didn't even notice that before someone else told me about it.
But I totally agree with you, I'm also a perfectionist, but I doubt I'll make any effort beyond contacting the support and see what happens. Specially the bad sound quality.
Oh well, I'm glad you finally found a nice piece. Take care of it now, don't drop it or scratch it
Ah you managed getting another one
Good luck with it! Treat it carefully

How did you get the information about the manufacture date of your device?
It would be really interessting for me to, when my device was builded.
Thank you in advance!
Xeon,
You seem to have gone through quite a few devices so, if you don't mind me asking, does your device have a rattle in the head of the device. I have got replies from quite a few people saying it is normal, but a few also don't have it. It's really starting to annoy me, I thought I'd live with it, but not sure I can now. Shaking the device hardly makes a sound, however, tapping it lightly near the camera gives me a big rattle.
Thanks in advance
My phone has a rattle toward the head area, and upon close examination, it appears to come from the camera at the top ofthe phone.
Since our phone doesn't havevs fixed focus lens, I'm assuming the rattle noise isthe autofocus mechanism. Therefore the noise is perfectly normal in my opinion.
Actually i think you are a bit too paranoic. That's fine, was same with me when I bought it and I think with everyone else. This feeling comes away after 1-2 months of actually using the phone rather than staring at it as at faberge egg from 2cm away everyday to find a scratch or a piece of dustd
p.s. - hardware keys are made that way for a reason and every hd2 has them the same way
NO actually mine doesnt ratltle but I discovered I got a faulty screen with the 4th device... shaking screen/cardio/untyped keys... the screen starts acting weird sometimes. IMO the last device is the worst as the noise problem during phone conversation wasn't solved and the distortion is so much annoying....
**** HTC, I am sorry to say it but nothing more to be expected from a device Made in Taiwan...
That's my last device, mark my words.

You know where the iPhone is made, do you? And besides the iPhone, pretty much every electronic device you're using...
[sarcastic] You're really lucky man! [/sarcastic]
My first HTC HD2 got broken and I've changed it, bought another HTC HD2.
Noticed that its build quality is really excellent compared to my old HD2 (that was one of the first produced), I've only had some weird problems with the touchscreen like yours, but I've solved it pressing it in the four HD2 angles: now the screen is more IN the device housing in the top right angle, but all of my digitizer problems are now solved.
Now my HTC HD2 is perfect.
Try with that.
Ouh, and remember that the noise in conversation can be a ROM problem!
Mine had too, but updating to the newer TMOUS radios I don't have it anymore!
Just software/network problems
And.. don't be paranoic, the PERFECT thing doesn't exist (talking of the rattle..)!

OK Apple is robbing people and HTC is following.. thank you.
And no.. Nokia is made in Finland and some other European countries including Germany. You can guess that by looking at the serial number that's why you get what you pay for...
Sony low end laptops are made in china but high end ones are made in Japan like the S/Z/T series... You see, you pay for a top notch device that much of money expecting it to be almost fault free. With HTC you never know, it's all about luck.
It makes me laugh reading how many people here got a faulty handset. When someone states a problem experienced with his heaset, the first answer is " seems you got a faulty device"
For god's sake a fault should not affect more than 0.5% of the devices.. but with HTC, it's like a feature; each client gets a different problem with the hardware. I can't tolerate the polls results.. Like the one with Weird touch screen behavior and issues. More than 55% have a buggy screen.. I know that it's not a case study nor a realistic accurate interpretation but it gives you a clear idea about what's going on.
I swear on my mother's life that this device( including all the previous 3 ) has the worst call quality a handset could produce. Believe me everytime I make/get a call I start blaspheming. I burned more than 1000$ on this device but thanks I took the lesson.
I still have my HD which is almost flawless compared to this product but slow as hell.
Don't mention iphone and apple things as I'm not apple fan-boy
Well, reasoning is obviously no strength of yours. Sad.

Manufacturing Imperfections (Sketchy Build Quality)

Alright, so right off the bat I just want to say that this isn't a doom and gloom thread (I hope), but it's an issue I wanted to ask you guys about since I'm on my 2nd phone now and I've had cosmetic issues with both. I want to love my phone, I just want one that won't give me problems first! I will post pictures soon, to show you guys what I'm about to describe below.
Both phones have had minor (but very annoying) imperfections involving the casing. My first phone was the most problematic. First off, the battery cover did not sit flush. I did not realize how much of a difference this made in terms of build quality until I got my second phone. My 1rst phone would creak and click when pressure was applied to the back and it just did not seem like a very sturdy device. This was not the case with the second phone (which had a back cover that fit perfectly) as there was no creaking or clicking, it felt rock solid just like its supposed to. Also, there was a small chip and discolouration of the teflon coating on the bottom left front face of the first phone. Again, nothing major but still not something that I was not pleased about given the price of the phone.
Unrelated but my first phone also had the purple tint issue which is the main reason I returned it and bought a new one (I couldn't outright swap because I don't live in the US). My second phone came in and luckily it did not have the tint issue. All I can say is WOW, what a difference it makes having a proper screen!! The black colours actually look crisp and dark, and there is absolutely no tint at low brightness.
So the screen was good. I checked the bottom left hand to see for any issues with the teflon, and there were none. I checked the backplate and like I mentioned earlier, it was perfectly flush. So far so good BUT.. again there were some cosmetic issues! Along the left side of the phone there was a tiny chip and some of the grey finish was off. Also, on the back, the bottom teflon piece did not sit flush with the rest of the device.
Once again, these are minor yet annoying things (but who knows, maybe I just have OCD!). The big issue from the first phone was the screen and the creaking, both of which are resolved with the second device, but I'm i'm contemplating whether I should return this one as well to go for one that is "perfectly built".. I mean, if this phone was store bought I would have no hesitation. I would just go there and make them open the boxes until I found a device that had no imperfections.. But it's just a real hassle having to continually ship my old device back, purchase a new one (while waiting two weeks to get credited back my $600 for the first device), and waiting for it to arrive. I also don't want to risk getting another phone with the purple tint issue..
Sorry for the long winded post, but basically what I wanted to ask was do you guys have any manufacturing imperfections with your phones??. I'm not talking about faulty screens or weak antennas, but actually design or cosmetic flaws. Do you guys have any and have you learned to just accept them or have you returned your devices and successfully gotten the "perfect" device.
Thanks, and hopefully I can get some pics up soon. Feel free to post your own so we can compare!
I got mine for free at this year's Barcelona MWC and luckyly i've had no issues whatsoever regarding hardware or aesthetics. An I say luckyly because obviously if I haven't bought it and I don't live in the US I would most definitely not get it replaced.

So which are you really looking for? Manufacturing defects or design flaws?
Are you looking for functional defects or cosmetic only defects?
Are you look for process-gone-completely-wrong defects or are you looking for minor imperfections resultant of process variation?
It is certainly possible to have a bad screen or a bad antenna as a manufacturing defect. There is also minor variation in any manufacturing process - this is normal. The trick is to keep the variation controlled well enough that the process consistently produces acceptable quality product. Note: No manufacturing process produces perfect parts, and minor imperfections are not necessarily defects. Normally, a design flaw impacts manufacturing quality only if the design requirements are too stringent for manufacturing capability.
I know you started out saying you did not want yet another thread bagging on the N1, but without clearer objectives, you've left it wide open for just that.
Mmm I love the build quality, it's very rigid and solid.
There is one imperfection that I noticed like 3 weeks of constant use.. The bottom piece, the one with "htc" on it, is a little bit more raised on one side (in comparison to the silver band on the back) than the other side. I'm talking 0.5mm difference that you can't see, only feel when comparing.
I'm writing that off as absolutely negligible and too tiny to even think about.

Same here. I thought about popping it off (it's just retained by a couple of clips) and attempting to re-seat it, but I see no problem with it. It's not like the 2nd batch of the iPhone 3G, where there was 1mm gaps between the plastic back and chrome bezel. I'm shocked no news blog picked up on that, it was fairly widespread.

Well it's the almighty apple, they don't wanna disappoint their readers that the calculator that they paid $500 for is also cheaply built.
I have a question that (um..) kinda relates to this. I'm having a hard timing saying this so bare with me. You know when technology is first released that is has alot of problems and bugs but overtime it seems that the problems die down because the companies that produce the phones (xboxs, iphones, ps3, etcs) get smarter and make things differently or better...
Well my contract with t-mobile is up in 46 days and I was planning on getting a nexus one. I don't plan on getting it engraved. My question is that do you think my phone will be made when I order it or do you believe its been sitting in a warehouse since March 26th (guess) just waiting for somebody to place a call? I've seen those cool "making of nexus one" videos on youtube and figured i'd ask you guys. Thanks to whoever answers.
yup, i have similar issues. i initially thought they actually shipped a refurb unit to me. turns out i'm not the only one. now i'm not that worried

attn1, I could have been more clear in my last statement, 'design flaw' was a vague term. I meant cosmetic only defects and minor imperfections as a result of process variation. I know that with any product that is mass produced on an assembly line you will get variation from device to device. This thread wasn't meant to bash this variation but just to compare what other people have experienced with their phones.
Like I said, my first phone was awful, it had both functional and aesthetic problems. My second phone seems to be fully functional but still has a few (albeit minor) aesthetic imperfections. I must say though, I got my Brando Gel case in today and it looks great on the phone! It covers up the unevenness on the bottom teflon piece as well as the blemish on the left side of the phone very nicely.
My nexus came with a scratch or bubble on the inside of the screens glass. They told me i'd get a refurb in exchange(even though it's about a week old), I told them i'd think about it. Think i'll be calling back and demanding a brand new device.

That kinda scares me because I'm picking up a nexus one in 46 days (contract with t-mobile will be up then) and I dont want something like that to happen to me. I'll keep my fingers crossed. I would demand a new one too
Have had no issues with mine until yesterday when the trackball stopped scrolling left. Refurb sans engraving rolling in tomorrow. All told still much better quality then my G1 or Blackberry.

No tint nothing amiss as far as build quality that I can notice. This is the best built (visually and as far as any creakiness or such) phone I have ever owned and the first one I have had without any perceptible flaws out of the gate.
OK! So to all of you who has a Nexus One with cosmetic imperfections on the BOTTOM plastic piece on the BACK, with the labeled HTC, i may have a cure for you.
So, with me I HAD a slight imperfection on the right side, about a 1mm gap. It was annoying and I have some slight OCD (used to be worse). One day last week or so, that part of my phone became VERY hot, probably 101-105℉. While that plastic was hot, it was a little bit bendable. I used a rather large amount of force, and over about three times of doing this, the plastic is flush with the metal, and the rest of the phone.
So try that if you're super partial to your device like me. Or if you dont wanna deal with HTC, like me.

"refurbished" sounds bad but really its a more taken care of device isn't it? It's been tested to a further degree so its more likely to come without flaws perhaps or am I reaching?

no. you're reaching high... its been refunded and fixed.. haha
so you are using someone else's phone who now owns probably a new device. brand new is the way to go, especially if your device is a week old...

Important: Squeaky Z1 Compacts

Hello,
I've been struggling with a squeaky / creaky chassi or backplate for a while now. I've been replacing this device 2 times already, and I've been having the issue on all of the devices and I feel like there is some serious construction flaw as all of these devices are of different batches and manufacturing dates.
The squeaky noise occurs when pressing at the top left corner around the edges, and when pressign at the lower right corner. The issue occurs mostly where the h/w buttons are located, and around the MicroUSB port.
I would like to know if anyone else is having these kinds of issues as it's very annoying and I'm quite sure that the device ain't waterproof at this state.
No squeaky sounds on my phone in places you've mentioned. I remember I've once pressed the phone in some way and I heard the squeaky sound but it was one time and I can't repeat this behavior. In today life there is no problem - it's the most solid phone I've ever had.
Devstaff is annoyed because he does press it all the time and hear it.
Try stop doing that Devstaff and you won't notice it. All phones have that somewhere if you press it really hard.
Or Xperia z Compact isen't a phone with high build quality.
So you're saying if you squeeze it by force and it makes some noise it's a construction flaw? Anyway I don't notice anything, however I also don't often randomly press on my phone. So even if my phone had this 'flaw' you're describing I wouldn't care.
My device is definitely waterproof.

I have this. But only in the middle of left side of the phone. i dont have to press it that hard to get it. I think the 3M tape that hold the screen is not that good.
its annoyying because that is one of the resons that i wont put my phone in water. I dont know if its sealed when its making squeezy sound, and im sure we not the only ones.
i have this on the bottom of the screen
Mine is perfect. I don't have any of those issues.
@devstaff
I am sorry to hear that you are dissatisfied with all 3 units you have owned.
Maybe it is a better idea to get a poll running at the top of the first page, so that you can see the general picture more easily.
I have lime UK, probably first batch of production since I bought it on launch (even though bought in uk, fw says otherwise, but still..).
I can report no problem on my Z1C. Holding or pushing won' make any noises. Waterproof confirmed last week, because now hot enough to go to the pool.
As a test, I was squeezing it hard (hard enough for my 1.5 yrs old daughter to cry if I was to do the same on her arm). I can hear something VERY small, like a tacky sound, as if double-sided tape was being pressed down, but you would need to be in a silent room at night to hear it.
Yesterday I pulled my case off pressing the upper right corner of the phone. I noticed that when the screen is on and i press there, that the corner of the screen begins to deform like when you press on a monitor screen. My z1c makes some squeaky noices too when you press on the corners
mine squeaks but is waterproof
I've had my z1 compact just under 2 months. I submerged it in ice water for about 5 seconds to show off to friends about a week after purchase.
I've replaced my plastic back cover with the glass one from the japanese s02-f. Haven't submerged it since but it's had the pressure of a shower head running warm/hot water on it for a few seconds and no problems.
I've never noticed the squeak before I deliberately checked for it. I've applied pressure in alternate corners before to see the amount of flex and there has always been some. I still consider this a premium built device (apart from the plastic back). Personally I don't think that squeak is an indication of a faulty unit. I'm surprised you were able to exchange it twice for that.
Same problems...

The issue seem's to be related to the small plastic frame, as if I look closely in the microusb jack it moves when I presses down on it.
No sounds coming from my phone.. solid device.
Mine squeaks if it's warm (battery temp 35c+), as that's roughly the temp the adhesive that holds the back on start to 'melt'
Initially my phone was solid but yesterday when I pressed the phones back i also faced this issue.. I think this issue is common after 1 or 2 months moderate usage..

no such sounds as of now on my phone its only under a month old though
Ok, this phone is really slightly disappointing for me. One month of usage and I have these sounds by merely holding it sometimes. Maybe choosing it over z3c due to design was a bad idea

I would say Yes, Z3C is a much better phone and I'm extremely glad that the store granted me a Z3C as replacement.
Hello!
Same thing with mine Z1C. After a month it started. I tried it in water and it's ok but that sound makes it less valuable. Some cheap chineese phones have better build quality than Z1C which is still expensive.
hi. i've had my z1 compact for almost a year now and i've had squeaky sounds since day 1. i can vouch for it's "waterproofness" though. i never had a problem after submerging it to water(pool, sea, river, lake, sink, etc). so i'm confident my device is waterproof. using magnetic dock to charge sure helped keep it that way. it's a tad bit on the expensive side but hey, i can still take shots underwater and make phone calls in rain.
one issue though, i still have flash bleed since i haven't replaced my back cover yet. and the getto ink mod looks bad so i keep flash off for now.

Xperia Z5 problems finally sorted - 5th attempt!

This is absolutely ridiculous! I have replaced the Xperia Z5 four times now the 5th unit I have finally has no issues. I ordered it directly from Sony (luckily not from Amazon as they probably would just kept “repairing” the same unit by resetting it to factory settings and each time it would take me weeks to get my phone back…) That's what it took to finally get the phone without any problems...
The first phone did not have any build quality issues and had absolutely no gaps between the screen and the frame. For a flagship phone, not being able to store my “pocket fluff” between the screen and the frame is absolutely unacceptable so I asked for a replacement.
Second unit did not randomly restart even once! I tried everything and it just would not restart at all. I really wanted to see the LED light blinking red at least once but apparently Sony decided that random restarts are not what the customer wants! Again I asked for a replacement.
Third phone's both speakers were equally loud. I was expecting that the bottom speaker will be noticeably quieter. My left ear is not as good as it used to be (courtesy of Vietcong) so was hoping the sound will be nicely balanced. Unfortunately this was a problem for me because you cannot adjust the L/R speaker balance in YouTube app so every time I watched videos the sound was much quieter on the left side of the phone. It was very annoying so again I asked for the phone to be replaced.
At this point you probably wonder why I didn’t give up and go for a different brand. Well, I just really like the Omni balance design and you can easily call me a Sony fanboy as almost all of my electronics are Sony. It did however make me consider switching camps but ultimately I decided to give them another chance.
Fourth phone I really hoped will have all these amazing features people here are talking about. And it did!! Unfortunately the heating element did not work properly and I was able to record the 1080p 60fps and 4K videos for longer than 3 minutes in room temperature (UK room temperature not Bangkok room temperature). I even managed to record 4K video for 15 minutes once! Who on earth would need such long videos! On top of that I was really hoping to use it as a hand warmer in the winter but since the heating element did not work properly I was unable to. In addition, when playing demanding games the phone would not shut itself off after 5+ minutes and because of that I almost got addicted to Candy Crush Saga. I thought that I’m now so close to getting a perfect unit I have to try for the last time…
And it finally happened!!!! The fifth phone I got is perfect and it finally has all these amazing features mentioned in this forum! It has a nice gaps to store my pocket fluff, the speakers are amazingly unbalanced, it does randomly restarts itself to make my life more unpredictable and it warms up nicely when making videos or playing games to the point when it shuts itself off.
And now the cherry on the cake…are you ready for it????!!!
All previous four phones were missing Sony’s amazing built in filter giving this cool effect of blurring the left side of the photos!!! Yes!!! You read it right!!! I finally have the Z5 that does have a proper “left-hand-side-photo-blur” (“LHSPB”) effect built in!!!! Now I can finally uninstall Instagram as this is the only filter I will ever use!!
Anyway, apologies for the long post but I just wanted to share my happiness and thank Sony for amazing customer service and all the fun I had replacing all these phones
P.S. Here’s the link to the photos I took to prove that I have the phone with the LHSPB filter that’s working properly!!

Seems like you are plagued by bad luck bre.
Happy for you for finding a suitable and perfect device which meet all commercial announcement.
From my side I did not succeed yet to have a phone with all elements working as they should be.
I currently am waiting for a 12th replacement... I am staying with this brand as a lot of people are satified with (and also becuse I am coming from the perfect XZ).
Nevertheless, Sonny has to take care about their manufacturing quality issue as from my point of view it is becoming unacceptable...
I will post later on if the 14th device is the good one...
Finger crossed...
For the story, I have encountered :
- Left hand blur issue (x3)
- Screen Issue (white spot on different areas) (x2)
- Camera Button issue (focussing but not shooting)
- Unglued back glass
- Bad speaker (x2)
- Jack hole not working
- Heating issue while recording
- Soft brick or HW brick after MM Update
@chrisftlse, that's a real dedication to sticking with Sony I'd probably do the same and people like us are probably part of the problem. If people just stopped buying Sony phones after experiencing problems they would have to do something in the end.
I also experienced smaller issues which I didn't mention earlier:
1. Rattling vibration module;
2. Uneven and sticking out sim card flap;
3. Bluetooth skipping after MM update (surprisingly the phone I have now seems to be OK);
4. Shutter button not working properly; and
5. Camera focus problems (in 2 out of 5 units I had);
I hope this time you'll finally get the proper phone that's in usable condition. Fingers crossed!

This is the bit that I do not understand: are these photos blur-free, or do they exhibit blur?
I can't understand with your first post if these are indeed supposed to be blur free or not.

Yes I can understand your point of view but I currently am engaged with a provider contract (Orange to name it) and unfortunately they are refusing to either propose me another brand/model either to cancel the contract so I have escalated this to their complaint manager.
BTW, as this XZ5 did not work for me, I do not pay any monthly fee since November last year... small compensation
I am waiting their call and perhaps switch to the XZ5 Premium instead of the normal one as I do not want either to go to another and available brand from their catalog (iPhone, Samsung, Huawei) may be I will decide to switch to the HTC 10 but I really prefer the Sony one
I don't think there is. Previous phones I had were severely affected but unfortunately I don't have any photos. Maybe XDA-Developers community could judge?
Also you can find a long thread here that has many examples of photos blur.

Following the link provided in your first post goo.gl/WGbQjS, look at the trees in the top-right areas. And your device probably has slight right hand side blur, I would say.
ALL Z5 devices will exhibit blur. I've been through all the messages in this forum and in the Sony Mobile forum, and there always is blur in the corners. Most people agree here, right? But I go further: there is always a side which is a tiny little bit blurrier than the other. In all cases. The lens is never 100% well centered.
But where you're right is that, in some cases, the blur is just too pronounced. In this case, you see it clearly, and the only solution is to exchange the device.
I don't believe many devices are really bad, and I also don't believe the Revision number makes a difference. I have a Rev 1 device bought last month, and I only have slight blurring on the right side, that, I take, is a side effect of the wide angle lens, more than a manufacturing defect from Sony.
On this forum and on Sony Mobile, you will find here and there a few pictures with blur-prone lighting conditions in the corners which nevertheless are 100% blur free : these are FAKES. The reason is extremely simple: even on the left corners of my pictures, that is, my clear, non-blurry side, there is a tiny bit of blur, that I can see and measure. Meaning all corners are affected to some extent. Meaning it is not possible to get a blur-free picture (corner blur). It's that simple.

I don't believe it is possible to have 14 faulty devices in a row - this is what I meant. In probabilistic law, the chances are incredibly low. Go play and play the lottery, I would say
Well, the Xperia X will be available very shortly. It would be silly to switch to another brand if you like Sony.
It seems the X won't have a very compact version like the Z5 have. Makes me comfortable with my choice of the Z5C. And BTW the Z5P seems affected just as much as the Z5 and Z5C.
@frankm87, I think you're missing a point here a little bit. Nobody is really complaining about the blur and darkness in the corners as this is a normal effect caused by light in the lens called "vignetting" and every camera in the world suffers from it to some extent. The LHSPB problem with Z5 is a completely different thing and shows as a very distinctive and pronounced blur only on the left hand side of the photo which looks a little bit like smudged picture when you move your camera. you can also spot a very pronounced border where the blur ends in most cases and when you turn the phone upside down, the blur will be on the right side. In addition, every camera will have a bit softer focus on the side of the photo but this is different then the smudgy blur in Z5. In my opinion the camera I got does not suffer from the LHSPB issue and all softer focus is either vignetting or normal softer focus in the far edges.
@chrisftlse, One guy in UK had the same issue and actually threatened Sony with lawsuit and Sony agreed to buy him out from his contract and offered compensation. His problem was similar as he kept getting faulty Z5's and network operator refused to exchanged it to a different model as he signed contract for Z5. At least they offer you different models.

Are you talking about CerberusSco? He did keep the phone, and offered it to his son. Proof Sony's phones aren't THAT bad, huh
As for the left hand blur issue, I don't think it is as binary as you say. And none of the pictures I have seen on the forums with the blur issue have a pronounced border where the blur ends.

Yeah, that's the guy I was talking about Never said they're bad, it's just that Sony's quality check process is lacking and they're not exactly the best in terms of customer service I love my Xperia Z5 and I also had Z2 which was a great phone but with its own unique problems. All in all, Sony does make great phones
Yeah, I agree it's not so black and white with the LHSPB. Maybe I wasn't explaining properly but the border is not like sharp line, more like an area where you can start seeing that the blur gets much smaller.

Sounds to me like the store/vendor is providing him with returned phones hopping one of them will stick. 14 faulty ones in a row just is impossible if you buy in a regular store. That or there is something fishy going on with the storytelling here. You know unicorns and magic wands. But I believe he is being played out by the store. Would be interesting to know the serial and revision number from all of the 14 phones.

Hi XZ5 lovers,
Just to update my situation, my carrier finally came back to me with a proposal:
1- Change again the defective XZ5 with a brand new one (new box)
2- Change to any other model
I have selected the 2 option and now running the HTC 10
I am very sad cause I liked this phone so much (despite all encountered issues) but I have decided to turn the Sony's page for now on...
But I did not tell my last word I am purchasing a brand new XZ5 for my wife

So.. You bought a used one and/or had your Z5 exchanged for used ones by the store instead of brand new ones? That explains why you got so many faulty ones one after another. You where getting returned faulty phones as exchange units. So in short this has nothing to do with Sony and all to do with the store playing faul game with you.

Device bend!!?!?

Help me. I was just walking with my device in my pocket. Then I sit down and I see that my device is bend?! What Can I do? And why my device is bend? Hasn't everybody other got that problem?
I really can't understand! If I send my device to assistance they will fix it for free? (I'm under warranty) Thanks for answers and Sorry for bad english
wow, you need to apply a lot of force to bend it, I think the guarantee can not do anything for you, but you can try.
bend test: (see from 1:50) It looked resistant for me
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkg28dRJXQ0
My G4 Plus is also bent! I only had it in my front pants pocket, not sat on it or done anything out of the ordinary.. I've been in touch with Motorola support but they say that their warranty doesn't cover physical damage, I argued that this is a design flaw but they aren't budging, they keep saying it's a "chargeable repair". I've been a loyal Moto G user since the 2nd Gen, I've never damaged a phone before (not even cracked a screen!) and certainly never bent one! So for them to imply I've not taken proper care of it is a slap in the face. In fact, here's the last email I received from them:-
"According to our warranty terms and conditions, physical damages are out of warranty regardless of the circumstances.
As this phone is bigger than the ones you had before, it is indeed more likely to get damaged if you leave it your pocket and sit on it for example. It is up to our repair centre to look at your phone and see if there is a manufacturer's fault or if it is proper physical damage that happened because you did not take proper care of the device.
Unfortunately, we cannot tell you in advance what this diagnosis will be since only our certified repair centre will see your phone. But as physical damage is never repaired in warranty, it is very likely that you will get a quote.
I understand your dicontent, but our warranty terms and conditions cannot be bypassed, I am truly sorry.
For any further assistance or information please do not hesitate to contact us, quoting your Customer Reference number."
I'm extremely disappointed and angry that I've wasted hundreds of pounds on the top-spec G4 Plus, only for it to basically be made of chocolate! If this is what they call product design and customer service then I will never buy Motorola/Lenovo anything ever again.
My phone also bent (g4+). Having problems with customer service. Any one ever had this problem resolved?
umm
They don't bend by themselves
Obviously not a warranty issue.
I bent my my Nexus 5 ruined it. My bad.
That sounds bad dude.
Can you upload a photo of the phone bend?
wearing mine in my front pocket as well. It seems that a lot of force is required to bend this. The guy from the video that hyof posted actually bends it back to straight once he applied an excessive force to it to get it to bend slightly.
You could actually advertise your Moto G4 Plus as curved screen smartphone .
Hopefully you get your issue resolved. May the force be with you...
Well I gave up on the G4... a month or so ago it stopped charging properly unless the phone/USB cable was balanced just so, and then it would take hours for full charge. I'm currently in NZ until next year and they said I had to send the phone back to UK for repair for software reasons, which would have cost a bit and then probably cost me for a "repair". I said I won't buy Lenovo or Motorola again (shame, as the P2 with 5100mAh battery sounds pretty good) so have bought a replacement OnePlus3.. which it turns out is a much better phone than the G4. Well, for now at least! :fingers-crossed:
Wow, I was going to buy this device, but this may be a deal breaker. Can someone post a picture of the bend? I'd like to see how bad it is.

Bending isn't something that happens easily. I have 2 G4s and they bend no easier than the G2 or G3 I owned. Any phone will bend if you apply enough pressure to it.

Maybe I tend to be a bit paranoid about my devices. I know that any phone bends or breaks if enough force is applied, but some are more fragile than others. I had the first G, the X and the second E, and they all were very sturdy devices. I was very surprised reading this tread.
I like to think I also take care of my phones, but I feel that this one was a bit too delicate. I've owned many phones over many years without damaging them, and specifically a Moto G2 and a G3 for a longer period than 5 months without damaging either, but the G4 was bent within a couple of months of ownership (to be honest, I don't think I could bend a G3 without snapping it! The G4 is only about 1cm taller but quite a bit thinner) Now the bend itself didn't seem to damage the phone, it still worked fine but when it stopped charging a month or so ago that was the last straw for me.

I've attached a photo of the bend (I think, never done this). It's difficult to make out but it's around the area of the volume rocker. It doesn't seem much of a bend but you can definitely feel it in your hand, especially with the back not fitting flush and creaking - I noticed it myself within a few seconds of picking it up the next morning.
Now I was very happy with the phone, I was recommending Moto Gs to all my friends before this and before the charging problem I could have easily lived with the slight bend. So if you are certain you won't put too much (but how much?!?) pressure on it then get yourself one, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Unless it mysteriously stops charging properly that is
definitely visible, sorry to hear about your experience. I will definitely pay more attention with my phone now after seeing this. Btw. the best way to show the bend is to look along the edge of the phone back to front while holding it horizontally.
Pretty much any phone will bend if mistreated.
If i bend mine i'm gonna whine in this thread.
That really sucks so see that happen to your phone.
I feel like a lot of the issues that have been happening to people like overheating and so, seem to be determined by pure luck.
I've been putting my screen face down when I sleep and because of the tempered glass screen protector and no case, it's been sliding around while I sleep, I find myself waking up on my side with my phone directly under my shoulder and it doesn't seem to have bent in any way.
Hopefully you get this sorted out.

Yes you do that. Now we know that just putting it in your pocket is 'mistreating' it, we know not to do that. Thanks for your informative and helpful post.

Don't feed the trolls. It happened and anybody should feel sorry for the person this happened to - it could be me and you next. We all know how to be careful with our devices. We also understand that this is not a widely reported bend-gate issue. We therefore expect the manufacturer's response to warranty claims to be most likely negative.
It could be an isolated device build problem that made this particular phone or phones more susceptible.
Personally, i would try to live with the bend if hardware is not affected, or try to bend it back, or try to wear it facing the other way for a little bit too see if it bends back.
Good luck.
Wow! I've carried my phone in my front pants pocket numerous times and have never seen any bend in it. It is as straight as it can possibly be. However, I do have a case on it so maybe that is the difference?? Don't know, just wondering.
Hell, do you use it naked? I mean without any case? Have not happen to me and I do have a rude use with it. Hope warranty makes it for you, cheers.
no bend
