Soft Brick need access to shell. - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Been doing my own searches for the passed few days to find a way. I need my phone now so I'm going to ask in my own thread. Sorry if my search foo is failing me.
I rooted my note 3 (no custom rom) with CFfire one touch and it worked great. I then wanted to try pimp my rom and all its features. Pimp my rom had a boot animation changer and I tried it ...now my phone wont boot passed the tmobile login.
Some research told me to edit build.prop and reset it or something but I need access to shell.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1927198
That was a great thread and I thought I made a break through ...but my phone is not recognized in device manager so I can't install the custom naked drivers. So now I'm stuck where I need to get shell access but I'm lost.

1. You can't access to shell coz your device don't boot.
2. That thread is for one Samsung Galaxy S3. Build.prop isn't the same for your device. Better don't play with it.
3. Is your device a SM-N900T? For be sure...

1. Can't I access it from recovery?
2. I notice ...wasn't going to use that build.prop ...just the process to get to mine.
3. Yep
Any advice would be great. I'd rather not reset...I tried running CFfire again....didn't work.

The solution is easy.
1. Put your phone in DOWNLOAD MODE.
2. You will have to download and unzip STOCK ROM. Reflash it through ODIN then. The latest for your model is: HERE
3. Good luck :highfive:

I have no clue where to go from here.

Using a custom recovery, wipe your dalvik cache and reboot.

Take the battery out for a few minutes then try to boot up again with the battery back in. If that doesn't work I'm afraid you have to do a factory reset, then flash the ROM. Next time make sure you do a nandroid backup before you try anything like this.

Through the custom recovery tool I can see my files. Is there a way I can get them? Most important my Chrome bookmarks... I didn't sync with the cloud.

The short answer is yes. Now here's what I want you to do:
1. In your custom recovery make a backup of all your files
2. Reboot into recovery (I always do a reboot after I do a backup)
3. Do a factory reset/wipe data
4. Flash the ROM that you wanted on your phone.
5. Reboot the phone normally which it should just go straight to the welcome screen
6. You will have to flash the recovery again via odin or some app on your phone.
7. reboot into recovery and do an advanced restore via:
A.CWM - (I don't use this so if someone knows please correct me) go to backup and restore
B. Go to advanced restore
C. Pick your backup file
D. Pick Data ONLY
E. Restore Data and reboot normally
a. TWRP - Reboot into recovery
b. Choose restore
c. Choose file
d. Choose "date" only and restore and reboot.
This should give you back your data on a clean ROM. Let me know if it works for you.

I'm here to help, but let's use PM instead or I fear this thread might get closed also
You really shouldn't be modding your Nexus if you don't know what those mean. And usually you can Google things and there's usually an answer.
Did you install twrp recovery using the toolkit?
If you did download titanium backup from the market and make a backup(only if you want apps and data saved)
download cm10.1 and gapps 20121212 boot into recover by powering down, then holding volume down and power until you get to boot loader, after use the up and down volume keys until it says recovery and use power to select.
Wait for twrp to turn on and touch backup and make a backup, next go to to wipe and format data(this deletes all apps) format cache, and then dalvic cache. After go to flash, select cm10.1 and swipe to flash, and find gapps 20121212, and swipe to flash then reboot system.
And of you made a backup with titanium backup download it and restore.
If anything goes wrong or you don't like it just wipe data cache and dalvik cache again and restore the backup you made in twrp recovery.
You can PM me as well if you need to, there's nothing too complicated about it so we'll get through it.
First you need to install a custom recovery (provided you don't already have one).

For some the way of learning is by being walked through a process. For example my coworker could not figure any of this out on his RAZR. I walked him through the process while also giving tips and explaining process and what things mean and do. Now he can do most in his sleep

That means you are using stock recovery, you need to flash a custom recovery.
Can you do that in the toolkit?
I haven't ever used toolkits so I'm not aware of the features they have.
If not you can download goo manager from the play store and flash twrp with it.
It's easier to explain than fastboot.

You need to download the CyanogenMod zip and the gapps zip (both available in the CM thread) then when you have them you go to clockworkmod recovery and select backup. Once that's done you do a "wipe data/factory reset" then once that's done select "install zip from SD card" and find your CyanogenMod zip, install that, then find your gapps zip and install that. Profit.

No it won't.
Not with cwm, that's only with stock recovery or a wipe of the SD card.
Wipe data/factory reset in cwm will NOT wipe the SD card, it only wipes the app data partition, not data/media.

Root/unlock bootloader/flash recovery, download the ROM and GAPPS if needed, put the USB cable into your MAC, connect the other side (micro USB) to the Nexus 7, copy the ROM&GAPPS to your ROM folder, drag out the cable from the device, reboot into recovery by: 1: Turning it off. 2: Hold the volume down button, hold the power button until you see Google logo, if you see Android icon and big, green Start button in the upper corner of the screen, you can stop holding the volume up button. By navigating with volume buttons, select Reboot Recovery. Make a backup, flash the ROM and GAPPS and you just flashed a ROM! It isn't so hard, is it?

Remember reading is more efficient then asking for thing that you don't understand in first place, My guide is not a full and final method to doing things. Learn how to use fastboot and adb and ull be good to go (if u want to continue to flash roms and test new things.
But hay I myself started from zero so Good Luck with ur start.
Ok i am going to reply with the step by step guide (for noobs). But remember you are risking your tablet to soft or hard brick buy doing so (Dont blame me).
1. Download WugFresh toolkit 1.6.2 (u already did that).
2. Open it and let it know your device and software version (u already did that).
3. Install drivers (u already did that).
4. Enable developers options to access adb, as guided by the toolkit (u already did that, i am hopping).
5. Click on (Unlock) Bootloader (u already did that, I am hopping).
6. Click on (root) (u already did that, i am hopping).
7. the toolkit will do all of the stuff for u and after all it will download and flash recover (probably ClockWorkMod).
8. Now u have stock with ROOT and UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER.
9. Now is the time to backup each and every thing using CWM or toolkit backup feature.
10. Download CM10.1 and gapps and copy them into memory storage.
11. Boot into recovery (turn off the tablet, then turn it on and press and hold volume down when it turns on ull see a boot menu saying bootloader, press volume up two three times untill u see recovery and press power button to enter into recovery.
12. Just to all these steps first then let me know via PM or report back in thread and ill guide u further (i am using TWRP recovery so can't guide u further into the recovery process of CWR).
P.S:This thread will be closed as before so note down the users names that are trying to help u and contact them via PM or start new thread in Q&A section.
A few people Report Problems When using ToolKits..Try Using adb and fastboot commands..they are safer and can get you out of most Problems. If you need Help Step by step then PM Me...i will help you.
Infact you can PM anyone helping you in this thread. That will be better as i am sure you will have a lot of Questions and no point in opening a thread for every Question.
As suspected moved to Q&A section

Screwed up flashing 4.2.2

Last night I flashed a 4.2.2 zip file from one of the threads. I was rooted with TWRP only. I wiped dalvik cache and the file installed fine, then rebooted. On my home screen where the power control widget was it now says "Select a VPN profile to always remain connected to. Network traffic will only be allowed when connected". I thought WTF, so I tried to go into settings and I keep getting a FC. If I cant get into settings to enable usb debugging then I cant flash a stock image and start over. When I try to get into stock recovery I get an android guy with a red triangle and when I try to get into bootloader mode manually the screen just briefly flashes and thats its, nothing else. I think I've tried everything here....
if you made a mistake just get the old 4.2.1 rom from the official google nexus rom site and reflash; then reapply the OTA.
you don't need debugging to re-flash official roms you just need to be in fast boot.
also android guy with red triangle IS the stock recovery you need to press power then vol up to get the options.

You don't wipe anything when installing an update just flash the zip file in recovery and let it do its thing. Wiping the dalvik cache is probably what caused your problems.
Her's the thread for flashing a factory image. This will wipe your phone of all data and restore it to factory settings.

I can't follow that guide because I have no way of enabling USB debugging because everytime I go to settings I get a FC.
You don't need usb debugging. That is an unnecessary step in that guide. You just need to get into recovery from the boot loader, and pick the sideload from adb option and go from there. Granted, this is all with the stock recovery so who knows with the one you have.

USB debugging isn't required for fastboot. The guide I linked to will flash a factory image putting your phone back into the state it was when you first received it, start with Step C or just go to Step D and see if fastboot recognizes your phone (boot into fastboot, power + volume down and then plug your phone into the pc, then open a command window and type fastboot devices).
Yes you can click the build number in settings 5 times

I think you're getting that because you already have the update installed even though it was a borked installation it won't install again as it does a version check first. Did you have any nandroid backups made of the old version? First option would be to try and get back into TWRP and restore a backup. If you replaced TWRP with the stock recovery when you updated which happens by default you should be able to flash a custom recovery image in fastboot. By teh way CWM asked if I wanted to keep the custom recovery and root before the rebooting the phone to finish installing the update.

The factory image goes into your tools-platform folder, teh same folder fastboot is in, on the pc and is flashed from fastboot not from the phone. I think that's your problem

You sound like you really don't know what you're mate.
I think the best advice anyone can give you is to put your phone down and read some more.
If you have successfully flashed CWM then all you need to do is flash a ROM of your choice then wipe data / factory reset.
Also before you even think about flashing anything to your phone you NEED to back up your EFS partition.

Just go back into recovery & try flashing again once you get status 7 go back & second line from bottom where you chose zip you will see "allow update old binary" tick the box if not ticked or until if it's selected then select zip to flash & it'll go straight through

[Q] Extracting /data/media from a powered off nexus 4 : Any pointers?

Hello all,
After a 2 day search on XDA and other forums, i decided to post a question (hopefully not a repeated one).
Hopefully the answer may be as simple as "NO", but would appreciate any help/guidance
1. I am using a unrooted nexus 4 with 4.4.3 update in place. Locked bootloader.
2. The phone died due to battery drain. Upon charging it, the phone boots up but gets stuck at merging circles and doesnt go beyond.
3. Unfortunately, I do not have a complete backup of my pictures (dont know why i stopped taking a backup after a while).
4. Now, the phone do gets into recovery mode etc and i tried wiping the cache, but no luck.
5. The best I could do till now is to have adb installed on my PC. The device does gets detected in adb sideload mode alone.
Is there any way I could take a backup of my /data/media before i try rooting it or do a hard reset?
I tried using adb backup, but all i see as status of the phone as adb sideload (since I am in recovery and tried to use apply update using adb).. hence cant use adb backup -shared ! Any ideas to this data out from the powered OFF phone ?
Thanks for any response in advance.
Regards,
Varun

I dont think so. I did not make any changes to the ROM (planning to do until now).
Also, it is not a custom recovery but just the recovery mode (from the OEM), that I get with only 4 options :
1. Reboot
2. Use adb to update
3. Wipe data/reset
4. Wipe cache

if only I could get into adb mode from adb sideload, i guess i can do a backup -shared ....but not sure how to do that without unlocking boot loader (leading to data loss).
As i recently learned, this is a stock recovery I am into...
Thanks !!
If you're on the stock recovery I'm afraid you're not going to be able to use adb to pull any files.

You can't do anything as your bootloader is locked.

Lollipop Install Guide for OnePlus One

This guide will help you install the unofficial builds of CyanogenMod 12 and other Lollipop builds.
Disclaimer: These builds are not official and are very much pre-alpha builds. While many people have little issues, you may have issues yourself and without some knowledge of ROMing, you may end up bricking your device.
I and the people who built the ROMs are not responsible for you bricking your device or losing data.
Installation
Backup: If you do not backup your device, you will lose everything!
Install Titanium Backup and choose Backup all user apps from the backup batch actions
Titanium Backup requires that you are rooted to work. If you are not rooted, use a tool such as Helium.
Be sure to copy your backup to your computer just in-case the data in the "SD Card" partition gets deleted. Use Android File Transfer or ADB to do so.
Unlock Bootloader: If you did not root your device, you likely have not unlocked your bootloader and you will need to unlock your device using the guide here.
Recovery: You need to also make sure you have a custom recovery such as the TWRP recovery which an installation guide is also available here.
Downloads: If you have done all of the above, you are ready to begin the installation process.
First you need to download all these files to your device.
Google Apps from https://s.basketbuild.com/gapps
SuperSu from http://download.chainfire.eu/593/SuperSU/BETA-SuperSU-v2.19.zip (optional for root)
Next you need to get a copy of CM12, you can do so in the following 2 ways.
Download a lollipop ROM. Choose from one of these known to work ROMs, build your own ROM, or find a ROM from someone else you trust (if you find another good ROM, let me know).

http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/development/rom-cm12-daily-builds-gapps-t2937887
Build your own copy by following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/development/guide-building-lollipop-oneplus-one-t2947949
Flashing: This guide is using TWRP. If you have a guide for using ClockworkMod or another custom recovery, let me know.
1. Reboot into recovery, ether by adb reboot recovery in terminal or by holding down the volume down button as you reboot.
2. Go into wipe, and swipe to factory reset. This erases your data but should not erase the "SD Card" partition.
3. Go back home if it doesn't automatically do so.
4. Go into reboot then choose Recovery.
5. After reboot, choose install and select the Lollipop ROM you downloaded.
6. Swipe to confirm flash.
7. After successful flash, go back home and back into install and flash both Google Apps and SuperSu.
8. Reboot device to system and you should have Lollipop.
Restoring Backup: Now that you're on Lollipop, you will want all your app settings and apps back.
If you used the Titanium Backup option, install Titanium Backup, and choose Restore missing apps with data.
Common Issues
Slow Boot: The solution people have used was to remove GPS and location services. This means you will not be able to use any map program to navigate anywhere.
Using ES File Explorer, go to /System/priv-app and remove com.Qualcomm.location
NFC and Bluetooth: There was some earlier ROMs that had these issues, go to a more recent ROM.
Enable on screen keys and disable hardware keys: Follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2032117 and flash this to disable the backlight on the buttons https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Byxnqyony5AybHFOeWJhMmczS09pd0JNaGFwWHFybHlYRmNJ/view credit @sd65
MultiROM: MultiROM does not support Lollipop as of right now. There has been success in installing Lollipop then using CM11(S) as a secondary ROM.
I will update this as I find other common issues.
Restore CM11S (Stock firmware)
Make sure you backup using the instructions above.
Download original firmware from https://cyngn.com/products/oneplusone/ and extract it.
In terminal, cd into the extracted folder.
On your phone, unplug it from your computer and hold down volume up and the power button until you see the fastboot icon, then connect to your computer and run the commands in the terminal window.
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
If you wish to flash the original recovery:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
You can also try following this guide if you trust their download.
Once you are restored, so long as you didn't flash userdata, you should still have your backup from Titanium Backup in the "SD Card".
This looks great thanks for the post!
I already know the answer but just asking to be sure JUST in case I'm wrong, if I do a NANDroid backup before wiping and flashing the Lollipop ROM just to try it out, will I be able to go back to CM11S just by restoring the backup?

I don't know much about NANDroid myself, but reading http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/NANDroid seems like it's just a clone of the flash in a file and can be restored using custom recoveries. So I would assume so, but not sure.

Yes you can. I've been switching between Lollipop and Paranoid Android for 2 days now with NAndroid backups

Great thanks
I tried to use MultiROM instead of this guide (of course, setting the 11s as secondary and pushing a custom AK kernel on the Lollipop ROM) but sadly it doesn't boot.

Try searching this thread for MultiROM and see what others have done http://forum.xda-developers.com/one...s-rumors-talk-l-t2829974/page146#post56750165
Another stupid question, but if I follow this guide to install lollipop alpha, when I decide to go back to stock can I just flash a brand new stock image for the latest CM11S version through twrp? Instead of using fastboot?
Sent via quantum entanglement, focused through my OnePlus One.
Why do i need too download and install google apps?

I'm not sure about installing with TWRP, it won't hurt to try. Just follow my instructions for installing Lollipop and apply it to CM11S

If you don't want the Google Apps (Includes Google Play), then you don't have to install it. I have heard people who didn't install it say that they had some weird issues such as when you put your screen to sleep it reboots or something.

I just installed android 5 and can't find Google play. Now I know why. Can I install it now or should I install it together with android 5. I'm asking if it matters. (Kind of a noob got opo in august and this is third time I'm doing this.)

It doesn't matter if you install it later. I did the very same thing.

Do you mean restoring? You are suppose to backup before installing Lollipop. If you accidentally mess up the process of restoring, you will have to start again by going into the app switcher and quitting Titanium Backup.

I backed up all the users app as instructed, now I wanted to restore all apps and its stuck with simple flashlight. As soon as I clicked restore it pop-ed up something about problems with parsing.

Thank you very much for all information, I find this very helpful already. I think I will reboot the phone into recovery boot my previous OS and make another backup with newer version. Thanks again.
Thanks for this informative guide. The "Restore CM11S (Stock firmware)" is useful too.

That's a system app, you can't restore those, you're only meant to backup/restore user apps.
