I can deal with the un-rooted version, because it's still a great phone for what you pay. However, I have the sprint version of the samsung intercept (assuming there's more than one carrier for this one), and I H-A-T-E all the crap that it comes preinstalled with. I hear people saying that these apps don't take any active RAM, but sysinfo and advanced task manager say otherwise..."sprint zone" is the most nefarious offender...if anyone would develop the root, I would L-O-V-E (guess I'm into spelling to-day) to donate to your efforts.

I really hope we can get a forum for the intercept soon. I know the phone was cheap on contract but its not going to be worth it to me if no one works on a root! Maybe our prayers will be answered soon! *fingers crossed*

I just got the samsung intercept and I want to root it.
It would be nice for the Samsung Intercept to have its on forum. The Kernel for it is already out. I don't see why we can't get a little section of our own too. :\
granted i know that this is the bottom of the line android phone but why is it no one will actually root it ? they have already rooted the evo,epic,droid,galaxy s ect..
why is it no one will actually take the time to root the intercept or the moment.
i'm sure it cant be too much different than rooting the epic.
people claim they are going to root it but no one follows through

The phone has been rooted now actually. If you go to the sdx developer site you'll see it.
I went there and read the instructions. I am going to try rooting it tonight. Do you know if the amon ra recovery image will work with it? If not, is there an alternative recovery image with similar functionality/options?
I have a friend who has the samsung intercept, and I rooted it using the new one click universal rooter, but it was only a partial root.. The phone is still virtually not rooted... (no Titanium, market access, busybox, tether, etc.) Please help me get this thing fully rooted. He is willing to donate 10 bucks or so.
Why are there no XDA Devs responding?
Weird, its like the twilight zone or something. No support for a newish device. There are far worse phones on here, so not sure what the deal is. Maybe they're all too busy with their sweet new Evo's and the like. I wouldn't want to spend too much time on this one either (I have an Evo), but given people are willing to donate, and aren't asking for anything more than [complete] root, I don't see why not.
I'd like to get this phone for my wife. She won't spend any money and I can get this one for free. I want her on an Android phone to facilitate some mobile functions between the two of us. I see no better way to do it (while staying with Sprint) than with the Instinct. Seems nice enough in the video reviews. She's still using her Instinct! ;-P
All I want is a working recovery. One where I can wipe and not brick this phone. It is possibly the worst piece of junk I've ever layed my hands on. I figured stock would be great for my fiancee, she knows nothing of rooting and wouldn't care if she did. However, the stock ROM that came with this was MISERABLE! (Virgin Mobile, btw, not sure if they did anything different from sprint other than differing bloatware.) That being said, I decided to root the thing for her and see if I would help with the lag issues and other things. Nothing did. All the custom ROMs had an issue where the phone would be so slow I had to pull the battery out to even use it again. It was as if the processor was running at 60MHz and wouldn't get any faster. Superuser would not request permissions for anything except root explorer - everything else automatically were granted access and did not show up in superuser's app list which can be VERY dangerous. Superuser also keept saying it needed to be updated no matter how many times I updated it. Andora ROM wouldn't allow the holding of the power button or it would freeze up. As a final issue, ADB wouldn't recognize it at all. I use ADB for my G2 all the time so I know what I'm doing and I know it's not my PC. It would recognize it in recovery but any command would fail and the device would become unrecognizable again until i issued "adb kill-server." Again, though, any command make the phone unrecognizable.
Now I like the phone for the budget qualities and virgin mobile's plans (great when you're super short on money) and the fact that they have an Android phone so you can still enjoy the greatness of Android on a budget, and I don't even want anything extreme out of this phone other than for it to just work like Android should.
Thank you to all the devs who have devved for this phone so far, and they've came a looooong way and I agree it's better than when I opened the box, but we need a working recovery at least. Yes, the recovery gets the job done but it needs some serious work and at least a working recovery. I think a lot of ROM issues come from not being able to wipe.
I'm not blaming any one for all my issues, I know the devs work hard for nothing but donations and I thank them greatly for that. Its not even really the custom ROMs as it is just the phone. I read up on it before purchasing and saw it had a good amount of RAM and a 800MHz processor and thought this phone was actually going to be able to compare to a G2 (speed-wise) but boy was I wrong. I'm feeling extreme buyers remorse and everything said above was just me getting it off my chest. I actually didn't plan to root it at all. My fiancee doesn't do anything really other than text, play some games, get on facebook, and occasionally look up things on google. The phone does all these extremely well but has so much instability in between doing these things that every time she picks it up it is unknown if she's going to be able to do any of them without the phone crashing or lagging so bad she has to pull the battery.
If we can get this phone running and VANILLA Android, such as cyanogenmod or just a goold-ol-fashioned AOSP build, I think it would be a great phone with much more potential is has now.
wait, so the intersept now has a forum, but not the TRANSFORM? messed up...
the intercept also has 2.2 as of today!!!!!!

r3s-rt - the biggest issue is samsung and their RFS filesystem and their proprietary drivers; which is a huge fail to porting over to AOSP or cyanogenmod... plus, there aren't that many devs (they're all working on the higher tiered phones...)
What file system would need to be used for it to be easiest?

Froyo Update
My Samsung Intercept updated to Froyo 2.2 this morning.
I got pushed the 2.2 update but it failed due to my custom inxane recovery, going to revert it to stock and try it again my brothers is on 2.2 and it pushes the stock android theme as well so no more crappy customized theme!
Not sure if this is the place to ask this question, but I will go ahead. 2 Months ago I got the intercept with a new sprint contract. I instantly wanted to root it, but decided to wait for the froyo update. Well, now I have the official froyo update up and running (SOOOO much better!!!!) so I decided to work on rooting it. First problem I had was the USB drivers. over the course of about a week, I discovered that the drivers work fine so long as you don't plug it into your PC through a USB hub (internal OR external). I followed the instructions in sprintdroids. (I read the entire thread several times hoping to learn from other people's experience). I tried both the official samsung drivers and the ones posted with PDAnet. I also tried both the one click root listed elsewhere on this site as well as SuperOneClick. The one click root gave me the following output:

Yes, USB debugging was ON and my screen was not locked.
SuperOneClick did nothing and said my phone was rooted. I am unable to perform any root functions (one touch reboot, delete bloatware, overclock, etc.) therefore I do not believe I am rooted.
I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition. I get the same results no matter which driver I use. Any suggestions?
The easiest way to get root right now would be to either use the one click that's available for the intercept over on sdx-developers.com or to flash a rooted kernel like slapkernel v1.1.

Hi all,
Have any of you been able to get a Cifs share mounted under android 4.3 on the N10.
I've tried various kernels and managers like Cifs manager but with no joy, they complain of invalid argument.
It seems like there has been success on the N7 according to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2107224&page=7 but I can't see anything for the N10.
If it does work for you could you let me know what ROM / Kernel combo you use?
Not only 4.3. I haven't managed to make it work on 4.2.2 either

I tried several combinations to mount CIFS shares with mountmanager:
Trinity + Carbon Rom, Sentinel, CM10.2 = works without problems
Flaming Monkey + Carbon Rom, Sentinel, CM10.2 = works - but without UTF-8 (for special characters like öäü...)
KTManta + Carbon Rom, Sentinel, CM10.2 = doesnt work.
Any Kernel + Purity Rom, AOKP, PA = doesn't work.
Could someone please confirm if CIFS is finally dead on Android? I haven't seen a single user manage to make it work. I even asked kernel developers to patch their kernel with this only solution provided here and even though they were happy in the beginning they never wanted to talk about it later which makes me think it was a hell or them.
I'd really like to know if I should just uninstall all CIFS related staff and just forget about it.

Google sure seems to be trying really hard to kill CIFS (and any network filesystems for that matter) on Android. As it stands now (in 4.3) there is no possible way to get CIFS working properly on the stock ROMs with a stock kernel. This is because the geniuses at Google removed loadable module support from the stock kernel and because of the way they implemented the multi-user stuff (using filesystem namespaces). The thing that kills me is that there is absolutely no reason for Google to make this so difficult. They could have simply compiled support for network filesystems into the kernel if they wanted to remove modules for "security". It would also be trivial for them to add a mount point which propagates to the user namespaces. They did this crap on purpose. And that is exactly the reason why my next tablet will not be an Android one. You shouldn't have to hack your tablet to get basic functionality that should just work out of the box. I'm done being scroogled.
Anyhow, I did manage to get CIFS working on my Nexus 7 which is running 4.3. See my post here for details. Now, I don't think my kernel will work on your Nexus 10. But, if you flash someone else's custom kernel (or compile your own) for the Nexus 10 which does have CIFS support/modules you should be able to use my update.zip which does not contain the kernel. I don't have a Nexus 10 to test on, so I can't promise anything but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I can mount my NAS without problems with Terminal command, and I can see all mounted Files and Folders in Terminal.
But any App (like ES Fileexplorer, Solidexplorer, Power-Amp....) can't see any files. The Folder always keeps empty.
I have tried several mount points: /sdcard/cifs, storage/emulated/legacy/cifs, /data/media/cifs. Always the mount is visible in Terminal but not in all apps.
I have tried many mount options like: noperm, rw, file_mode, dir_mod, gid.....

You have to get su access first with "su"
mount -r -o noperm,rw,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,uid=1000,gid=1000,unc=\\\\192.168.0.10\\music,username=***,password=*** -t cifs none /sdcard/cifs

Hi all, if your goal is simply to play music and video from your NAS to your android device, you can use Kodi (xbmc) that can access cifs path directly!
This is NOT native ubuntu, THATS why i wanted it. You can use CYANOGENMOD roms and this will just load like a normal app, or a normal terminal. Or in my case provide me with a capable server in my pocket. Thjs js so cool imo. Because i can run all the old perl scripts directly on my phone... People can use my little perl scripts right from my pocket! I like this!
I use android 2.3 but after i got it on 2.3 i factory reset, installed multiple other roms, including ICS roms and it all worked. But alot of cool features backtrack has to offer seem to require lots of reconfiguration on 4+. i recommend android 2.3 nutrino rom i got it all working godly on there. Without editing the boot.img once... Or rly anything..
This runs as an app and the app "changes" the "root" directory. So basically its a little hack, its not native ubuntu.
I heard people telling me my phone cant run arch linux or ubuntu and i beg to differ.

After your done. Download a vnc client app to use the graphical interface (startx X.org desktop)
After your done with that download a ssh server app (that way your ubuntu chroot will be able to navigate android filesystem)
The vnc server and ssh server do not need to route trafic to your lan nor internet.

After you got it on your phone i recommend... Unlocking ALL the arm repositories and deleteing the bloat packages cause you wont have alot of room.

idk, that's why I stick to the CMs, stock ROMs, and other custom mod's along those lines.

You can do almost anything you can on normal ubuntu... And it does not load unless you load it.
Honestly if you dont need ubuntu or a useful linux dont get it. But with this u can run linux binaries that are generally common.... And not just the tiny subset that busybox brings. But a giant giIant giant giant giant awesomeness
For example i love loading firefox and runnng the same addons that i run on my pc on cellphone.
I also love being anle to send my phone shell commands directly AND HAVE BINARIES that make that useful. (I can write perl scripts to automate it all now, powerfully)
For example you can run wireshark to sniff data.... You can really do anything ubuntu can do.
Usually downloading linux distros onto your phone *for chroot is very easy. But since backtrack is so big i needed an extra step which i couldnt find untill i read this link. I was very great-full to that guy. I hope he can help someone else thru me. Because i needed backtrack on my phone yes or yes.
I can now fully program using emacs directly on my phone (i connect a computer keyboard to my phone) but for me its always been a dream to have a real computer in my pocket that i can use to program and run real internet browsers and diagnose networks. Believe it or not i stay legal, very ironically
I know how nerdy that sounds, but theres a hacker in all of us, and this makes your phone a weapon.
Tbh most people wont even want this. But those who do will be so happy to know that they cAn hack the image to under 4gb and hence can run it on their phone. It just all works right out the box.
Just look at what ubuntu can do and if u rly rly want that and it works on the phone install this.
I think im going to do my own directions and make it two steps.
That way people will just click click and see for themselves what new things they can do.
THIS DOES NOT DELETE YOUR CM ROM. YOU CAN RUN THIS SIDE BY SIDE TO YOUR ROM, AND EVEN HAVEA. DUAL BOOT SETUP + THIS.
Its fully compatible to work side by side because ita a chroot not a real install

You have linux already on your phone. Android runs on linux. Thats why chroot is so easy i think
This is about backtrack ubuntu. Linux comes when you buy the phone.
I tried typing "what useful things can ubuntu do" into google
But that wasn't helpful lol...

This isnt a rom though. Im not knowledgeable in this area but i think since your running chrooted the android system still occupies the read only memory. I might sound dumb but i this is not in any way a rom. It fully sits in your REAL INTERNAL "sdcard" memory. Unless you load it ^.^ it auto closes when u close the terminal.. Atleast it shud
I believe that would be the case if you were to run ubuntu natively... Aka delete android.

If you had to Google something like that you probably have no clue what BackTrack means or what it is meant for and should avoid following this guide anyway.

Sorry for insulting you. But I have was programming nearly a decade before ubuntu even existed. It is a mere derivative, and backtrack is just a set of tools.
Google is powerful, you can hack with google. Googling what ubuntu is good for is perfectly ok imo, nothing to do with much.
Im NOT in IT... BUT I code 29 hrs a day average, atleast i try.

I am afraid I was just expressing an opinion in an open forum and didn't mean to come out as insulting or hurtful. can you send me the full output you got when you ran bootbt? Maybe also the android VERSION and the bootbt source but first read bellow.
When you finish all the editing and you upload the /BT5 folder to your cellphone. are you sure your putting everything in the INTERNAL SDCARD. And also try moving all installed apps out of INTERNAL SD and into INTERNAL MEMORY. (I think i read somewhere somekid had to remove the real sdcard also... I dont see why lol, and i didnt have too.
Then you should just load up a teminal emulator on android and type: su and then sh bootbt. You said you did "sh bootsh" from adb. I did it from phone. But once the script runs it shouldnt matter where its invoked from so long as your running as root?
Try typing adb root first from pc.
Or type su first from terminal emulator on your phone.
To reply to mot.a.troll.... Im sorry im dumb and take suddle things like that as a big insult because i really dont think knowing about ubuntu or even backtrack. Is a requirement for this or for following that guide. I am damiliar with unix... Believe it or not. And i am DEFFINITLY not in IT, idk what "it" even means whaha. All i enjoy doing is programming when i was a kid in basic, and now 90% just perl all day (for many many years)

Sorry if me being a hacker offends you or your definition of it. Personally idgaf.. my current job basicaly implies i atleast write clever enough perl to make money lol...
And for your off note... This may sound very "ignorant".. but i HATE the owners of ubuntu. and hate how closed it is. I would never help them.
Also about the promiscuous mode, I wasnt even aware phones had no promiscuous capable wifi drivers... are you sure? Either way I dont see why you NEED it for the plethora of tools offered to you just by downloading an .img file.... I understand gentoo is alot better... but i have no time? This took me 30mins... because i literally copy pasted the commands and then waited...
use your brain? I could hack on windows, ios, android, ipad, unix, linux, pickyourfavorite here... hacking is an abstraction above the operating system imho *cough* *noob* ...and chrooting android PERIOD. gives OBVIOUS benifits.

if you get an error like /local/data/mnt/ no such directory
then that means you just have to create that directory... and try again.
otherwise post your logs.

Also about the promiscuous mode, I wasnt even aware phones had no promiscuous capable wifi drivers... are you sure? Either way I dont see why you NEED it for the plethora of tools offered to you just by downloading an .img file.... I understand gentoo is alot better... but i have no time? This took me 30mins... because i literally copy pasted the commands and then waited...

My definition of "hacker" is someone that manages to create a tool or find a way to overcome an obstacle that wasn't supposed to be passed, such as wifi passwords. in this sense, just by using someone elses tools doesn't put you into the category of hacker.
I see chroot can have a benefit, but not by much as it depends on the android os. As 95+% of androids wifi drivers are closed with no promiscuous mode then the generic way of wifi hacking isn't possible. Correct me of I'm wrong but I'm going to assume that's why u want backtrack
Noob? Im have a ubuntu touch port up and running already and. With custom kernel this gives much more benefit over a chroot .

I'm currently running an OMNI build for everest, which is working delightfully well. The only thing I can't seem to achieve is to mount a CIFS directory. Actually, it can be mounted, but its contents are only visible to root.
While doing some research I found this thread. For what the description says, I assume this fix has been applied in CM, since I was able to mount CIFS (outside of /storage) before switching from CM to OMNI.
Would these patches be applicable for OMNI? If so, I would try to ask the everest ROM creator to apply them, or even try myself. But I'm afraid I may be lacking the knowledge to judge whether it'd just be a waste of time.

Any update on the topic? I've tried Omni on my Nexus 10 and it runs perfectly well but this is the last thing that stops me from using the ROM. After mounting the data from my CIFS or NFS share the data is only available from the app performing the mount. The patches in the link from the previous post seems to work around this issue, is there any chance it could be applied to OmniROM?
Try to mount your folders manually (or by GScript) with Superusers --mount-master switch to make the mounts available to all processes. Something like this.
The su binary now also has a "--mount-master" option that connects you to a su session in the main mount namespace. Mount commands in this session should affect all processes. This is still a bit experimental, and getting it working requires a reboot after upgrading the binaries from a pre-1.93 version. This feature has been asked for a lot by devs, and it escapes the need to hijack system services to affect system-wide mounts, which is becoming more complicated with every Android release. A new version of StickMount will be released in a few days as well, taking advantage of this feature, and thus avoiding a number of issues some are seeing.

Alternatively, there is still the possibility to hijack a system service (like SSH one) to point to a script instead that will bring up your mounts. I'm personally using this so i haven't checked the SU method yet.

I own Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 830L, firmware "upgraded" to 830LC, rooted. I've tested the provided solution only on it, though it should work on other models, and maybe even on other devices.
I've built exFAT and ntfs-3g drivers from the most resent sources, and made a shell script, to auto-mount a microSD at the system start. Root and SuperSU are required. Currently, the installation is manual. The project is here:

Thanks a lot for putting effort into this! I haven't tried it yet, but I'd suggest to create an app/APK which installs the files necessary and which features some buttons for mounting and unmounting. A CWM package is not such a good idea due to the fact that we have only temporary CWM and hence installing would still be a bit painful. This app could be something like a Yoga tablet 2 toolkit, which could maybe even include my sharpness fix
I've created CWM/TWRP installation zip with exFAT and NTFS drivers, and mounting script. It can be downloaded from here:

Now, if you have rooted your Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 (any screen size), and have SuperSU installed, just download UPDATE-android-fs-1.0.1-install.zip, install the same way, and start using exFAT (strongly recommended!) or NTFS (not recommended!) microSD.
To safely unmount for hot unplug, use Android settings. For mount after hot plug, better to reboot your tablet.
Note: the microSD file system is checked before mounting, and, if errors are found, it is mounted as read-only. So, if you find out that you can't write to the microSD, safely remove it and check (allowing to fix errors) it under Windows. It is strongly recommended to check and fix under Windows, because both exFAT and NTFS are produced by Microsoft, and no open source software is able to correct the file system errors correctly!
I have Yoga Tablet 2 8''. But the installation zip contains binary files for a number of platforms, and may work on other Lenovo Android devices. Being manually installed, the drivers are confirmed to work on:
Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro
Lenovo Vibe Z2
Lenovo S90
so I see no a reason why they will not work being installed via recovery console.
I almost thought my Yoga 2-850F is broken as it was impossible to mount or format any micro SD card. Even when I tried formatting the card with my android phone using various file systems (i.e. exfat, ext4 etc.), I would always get an error. Finally, just flashing the zip did the trick. Thanks for the script!
I've updated the drivers to version 1.0.2:
1. One more supolicy rule added to the mounting script. Without it, unmount from Android Settings didn't work.
I didn't put per-platform binaries this time, because the recovery zip contains them all.
I'm sorry for so frequent updates, but
exFAT/NTFS fuse drivers binaries for Android v1.0.3
The problem is that the original exFAT driver was designed to update the file system only at unmount events, but the current Android never unmounts microSD mounted not by Android's vold process Meaning, file system corruption may happen on a reboot or power off.
Version 1.0.2 partially addresses that issue, and is stable enough. Only freshly created directories can be damaged by a reboot, and only if there were no any file operations after that, i.e. a rare case. Version 1.0.3 ensures that the file system is kept consistent almost always. It can be damaged only by removing microSD card during write operation.
Nevertheless, I plan to make at least one more release, to keep microSD clean, when there are no pending writes. Also, I'd try to improve the write performance compared to 1.0.3, without a penalty of the file system consistency.
I just have released
exFAT/NTFS fuse drivers binaries for Android v1.0.4
and I can say I'm quite satisfied with both performance and robustness of the resulting exFAT driver (no changes were made to ntfs-3g). So, I believe, it is the final build for a while.

Micro SD: Lexar 128GB (633x) Formatted to exFAT

I didn't upgrade to Lollipop myself, and I don't want to.
The driver and the mounting script are reported to work under Lollipop, but, for auto-mount on boot, they rely on /system/etc/install-recovery.sh script modified by SuperSU to launch with required privileges on system boot, which is not the case for Lollipop. It works flawlessly under Kitkat though.
You can find the detailed instructions at the github place from the link above. It's as easy as to root.

There are binaries for all kinds of arm, including 64-bit. The mounting script won't work under Lollipop. But people with rooted devices and stright hands manage to make the drivers launched at right time with right options. I heard successful reports for very different devices.

I'm still on kit-kat, and rooted. I've yet to install CWM/TWRP though, so that's the first step. I'm pretty limited on tech skills so that might be an issue, but I'll see how it goes ; if it's a simple zip flash then great, otherwise things may get too out of hands

I try to have my external SD mounted in R/W at launch time.
In superSU, i change the following parameter : activate su on starting to enable but it does not work.
I have read that /system/etc/install-recovery.sh is executed by super-su. I can see at the end of this shell /system/etc/install-recovery-2.sh is called but it does not mount the SD in R/W...

Unfortunately, Lollipop has more protection, and it launches install-recovery.sh in a very restricted environment, not enough for the mounting script to work properly. And I don't know a way to launch my script at the boot time with required privileges under Lollipop. One of the reasons I don't want to "upgrade" my 830LC to 5.0.1!

Same way you did it when rooted. It is launched one time only.

I just got your drivers to work on a Lenovo Tab 2 A10-70F running Android 5.0.1.
Yes, the install-recovery-2.sh mounting script doesn't work there, because it runs in a restrictive security context on Lollipop, if I've understood it correctly.
I flashed your update zip, noticed that it didn't work, then searched for some other options. I thought about init.d, but that isn't supported on this tablet either.
However, SuperSU, which I've already been using, offers a "su.d" mechanism, similar to init.d, and I used that to get it to run!
One needs to have SuperSU and busybox installed, and flash your update zip with a custom recovery (this one works for the Tab 2 A10-70, F & L).
Then create /system/su.d directory and move the /system/etc/install-recovery-2.sh script there. It can be named anything, I renamed it "/system/su.d/00mount_exfat_ntfs.sh".
I'm not too sure about the permissions, I used 755 for both the directory and the script.
In the SuperSU settings (accessible in the SuperSU app), the option "mount namespace separation" must be disabled.
I have a 64GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC card, but for some reason it wouldn't want to work with exFAT on this tablet at first.
/dev/block/mmcblk1p1 did not show up while the card was inserted, only /dev/block/mmcblk1.
I formatted the card with NTFS, and that worked. I changed it back to exFAT, and then it finally did show up. Weird.
Anyway, would you recommend exFAT or NTFS, Lurker0?
I've used this card with NTFS on an older tablet, and it was rock solid, which I can't say about my experience with exFAT.
One minor caveat: the card isn't automatically mounted on insertion. Mounting requires another execution of the mounting script, either by rebooting or running "su -c /system/su.d/00mount_exfat_ntfs.sh".
Is there any way to make that automatic?

NTFS is not flash-friendly, so I believe exFAT is better.

It requires to write an application to watch for system mount events and run that script. I'm lazy to do it
