[GUIDE][ROOT] Swap Menu and Back capacitive keys - ONE General

I post this little guide to help those who - like me - prefer a "Nexus-like" experience while keep using the capacitive buttons.
- 1 - Turn off capacitive buttons backlight
1a) using your preferred root file manager go to /sys/class/leds/button-backlight/brightness
1b) edit the file "brightness" and set the text to "0", save and exit
1c) edit the file "max_brightness" and set the text to "0", save and exit
- 2 - Swap buttons functions
2a) using your preferred root file manager go to /system/usr/keylayout
2b) open for editing the file "Generic.kl"
2c) find the string "key 139 MENU" and replace with "key 139 BACK"
2d) find the string "key 158 BACK" and replace with "key 158 MENU", save and exit
2e) reboot

If you turn off capacitive buttons backlight, wouldn't be difficult to press them since they are quite small?

i do this since i changed my n4 for an OPO and preferred to stick on the nexus keys layout
the drawback is that if you remove the capacitive menu key you don't have access to menu on chrome and other apps that don't show overflow (3 dots) menu buttons
here is the thread where i asked about infos but nobody helped so far
http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/help/force-app-overflow-3-dots-menu-to-appear-t3003731
and here below there's 3 flashable zip files for CM12 with the following setup:
nexus-like keys (back-home-recents)
inverted keys (back-home-menu)
stock keys (menu-home-back)
if you use CM12, my advise is to use the "inverted" one and remap "menu" to "recents" from Cyanogenmod button settings, so you can also set up "menu" option if longpress or double tap

AH thanks alot OP really needed this

I flashed the nexus- like keys zip inside of TWRP recovery, and now NONE of my capacitive or physical buttons are working. How do I fix it?

Thanks, i was running 11s. Not to worry though, I decided that was an opportune time to flash CM12, and problem solved.
To clarify, those original 3 zips should be safe to use now that I'm running CM12?
Do i just flash using TWRP?

i personally use CM12 and flash the "inverted" one myself with TWRP 2.8.4.1 everyday when i update nightlies.
just compared my Generic.kl stock file with the one on latest 0121 nightly and they're identical so yes, i guarantee it's safe to flash them

to be honest, i don't know if the origin file is the same.
you should compare the file from my "revert" zip and yours, it's located in
/system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl
if they are identical, then you can proceed.
if not, you can send it to me and i'll prepare a zip for O²

Thanks, Inverted working great on Bliss Pop.

Suppose to : long press [Home] key, open recent menu...
So how I can change it to long press [Menu] key to open recent menu?!

Thanks, one of the experiences I'm missing from Nexus devices

Hi,
can anyone tell me how it is to be done on Oneplus X with CM 12.1.
I am able to configure Menu and Home buttons via settings, but I cannot swap location or configure Back button.
Editing Generic.kl did not work, I think it might be overridden by the cyanogen mod settings?
thanks

[Q] can you change the size of the on screen buttons

i was wondering if there was a way to change the size of the soft buttons for home, back, ect. I was hoping to make them smaller as to not interfere with games and other apps. as well as making the home screen larger and better looking. please if any one has any info on this i would appreciate it. i am not a developer but do have lots of android experience so any info may be useful. Thanks
EDIT: with new firmware out if you have updated the frameworks posted here so far wont work. i am trying to get someone to post a new framework from the new firmware. Hopefully someone will. Thanks
The icons you're interested in are located in the drawable folder of the framework-res.apk (buttonbar_sys_*), along with the relevant xml files. I tried resizing the existing icons, but all you get is smaller icons! The buttonbar remains the same size. I'm currently looking at which xml file to edit to resize the bar itself.
cool looks like a start at least. keep me updated. thanks
You can remove side panel alltogether. Buttons will then placed in the top status panel. Root is needed.
From Archos Gen8 FAQ on 4pda.ru (can't posting outside links, sorry):
In the /data/local.prop file add string
Code:
ro.board.has_buttonbar=no
reboot
to change buttons size, install app LCD Density
add to local.prop sting
Code:
ro.sf.lcd_density=120
reboot
PS. Perhaps with modified buttons from reply #2 we don't need the last step, as it change font size too.
you can also use the app 'lcd density' to change the resolution of the screen, which makes the buttons smaller.

Just to clarify, you either need to add that string to local.prop or install LCD Density, no need for both. The only problem with this is that it changes the size of the entire UI, and makes the icons in the status bar really tiny. That really bugs me!

There are different images for the icons in the notification bar. They are also in the drawable folder, but are called stat_sys_*. Also, simply resizing those doesn't work either. Tried it, but the icon area stays the same, so the smaller icons are just stretched out to fill the space - doesn't look good!
Why all the guys want to kill the softbuttons?
Without them, it don´t work
The only thing is bad on the buttons is the fact that they still there by playing games
But on my Archos 5 IT , theres an fullscreen mode with that you can disable the bar/buttons by playing games.. maybe a dev can look at it

Reading through gen8 thread on 4pda.ru i have found another method:
For example, for 32px notification bar height, unpack framework_res.apk and change file \res\values-long-mdpi\dimens.xml as follows:
Code:
<dimen name="full_statusbar_height">32.0px</dimen>
<dimen name="compact_statusbar_height">32.0px</dimen>
<dimen name="statusbar_button_width">40.0px</dimen>
<dimen name="statusbar_button_height">32.0px</dimen>
And don't forget string "ro.board.has_buttonbar=no" in the \data\local.prop
No need to resize images. They will be scaled down automatically.
See attached screens.
ahh looks like progress , im guessing im going to need root if i want to change the framework_res.apk? which one is best for this archangle, uruk or churlis method?

I don't know why, but if you open apk with archiver program, there is really no such folder, but if use
Code:
apktool -v d -s framework-res.apk
you get:
Code:
$ ls framework-res/res/values-long-ldpi/
dimens.xml

No, they are different. File framework-res/res/values-long-ldpi/dimens.xml are the same in both versions and contain "24.0px" value (this is error, i suppose). Files framework-res/res/values-long-mdpi/dimens.xml are different and contain "24.0px" and "32.0px" values in 24- and 32-version respectively.
It seems i need to sort it out with the author on 4pda.ru, as i don't have device yet. Or you can try to change file dimens.xml in the folders values-long-* by yourself.

Mates,
I've investigated why Button Savior won't work, and I've found the solution.
In Uruk (since I'm using it), /system/bin/input shell script miss execute attributes.
So, as root just do this:
chmod +x /system/bin/input
That's all.

Ok so here's exactly what I have to do to get all button on Button Savior to work.
Again I'm rooted via SDE so I'm not sure if this works for Archangel root.
1. With Root explorer, go to System> Bin and look for "input" file.
2. Press and hold for option to pop up and select "Permissions" and check all read, write, etc.
3. Reboot the device
4. Then press the regular Menu button (NOT on Button Savior yet) and go to Settings> Applications> Development then uncheck and recheck USB Debugging and hit OK.
5. Now on Button Savior press the either back or menu button.
6. The Superuser permission will pop up and select yes. If superuser is already set previously then a dialog box will shortly appear stating superuser permission applied.
7. Wait till the dialog box goes away, then press the back button. It should now back up one screen. If you press menu nothing will happen since you are in the Development screen which doesn't have a menu option so don't panic if that happens.
From here you can go back to home and test each button and they should all work now.
Each time you reset the buttons might not work again so what you need to do is go back and uncheck/recheck debugging first before pressing any of the Button Savior buttons. If you press any of Button Savior before recheck/unchecking debugging then it wont work. You'll need to reboot. To be safe uncheck/recheck it every reboot prior to using Button Savior.
The permissions should not be affected on reboot. The only time the permission gets unchecked is if you do the 10 second reset (holding power button for 10 seconds). In this case you have go back to step 1.

I can change the menu key to recent apps but not sure about longpress home.
Using a root File Explorer open generic.kl in system/user/keylayout with a text editor.
Go to key 139 and replace 'MENU' with 'APP_SWITCH'. Reboot and you're done.
For google now it should just be a matter of finding the appropriate key.

Thanks for getting me in the right direction here. However, when I alter the generic.kl file at all, both capacitive buttons quit working after a reboot. I tried replacing the altered file with a backup i made, rebooted, and they still don't work. The only way to restore function of the buttons is to reflash the rom. Any idea as to why? This seemed like an easy change.... (also tried editing the file via notepad++ on the pc with the same result)

What file explorer are you using? ES explorer?
After editing and especially if you're pasting in a back up you need to make sure the files permissions are set to rw-r--r--
I personally used the text editor from Rom Tool Box Lite . Make sure there aren't any extra spaces and there should be no # in front of the key.
I just remapped and put them back to normal a few times and I'm not having any problems.
Let me know how you get on.

Disable wake with Home button!?!

Hey all,
I did a pretty extensive search for this with little luck. I used to have the Note 2 and disabling wake with Home was simply editing the sec_keys.kl file. I tried to edit all the files in the S5 but I can't seem to stop this sucker from waking with the Home button. I don't want to go through a bunch of kernels and roms and whatnot...simply stop it from waking. Has anyone had any luck doing this?
Thanks!

I don't think you can do it without rooting your device. might wanna search through the Dev section bud. good luck
Sorry...I should clarify...
It is rooted. I just need to know which file I need to edit. Here's the steps for performing this on the Note 2 but I can't do it with this new phone as there's no "sec_keys.kl":
1. open root explorer
2. navigate to : system/usr/keylayout
3. now press the mount r/w button near the top of screen to enable read and write permissions
4. scroll down to: sec_keys.kl
5. press and hold until menu pops up, select: Open in Text Editor
6. locate line: key 172 HOME WAKE
7. tap behind the word WAKE and delete it so you see: key 172 HOME
8. press menu and select: Save and Exit

Since it is rooted, you may want to try to install Wanam Xposed.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/app-wanam-xposed-customize-stock-t2383484
There is a "Disable Wake Home button" feature and many more.
Do not forget, you need a Xposed framework for this to work.

S5 Menu Button

Hi
is there a way to change the recent app button to the old style menu button?
thanks
Simply long press the recents key to pull up the old style context menu.
Or edit half a dozen files to permanently revert to the old S4 style menu.
This has been asked and answered many time sin existing threads as a simple search would have shown.

I believe you can also change the button function through root explorer, but you'll be left without recents until you make certain changes to the .jar file mentioned. Easiest way would be to flash a ROM with remapping capabilities (Alliance).
Yes. I tried to change the .jar file but after replacing it back to my system, it didnt seem to work.

[How-To] REMAP CAPACITIVE BUTTONS ON GALAXY S6 [ROOT]

HOW TO REMAP CAPACITIVE BUTTONS ON GALAXY S6
If you're left handed like me, then you might wanna remap your capacitive buttons if you use the back key more often than the multitask button.
You can remap many other buttons such as volume keys and the power button, just use some logic and you'll figure it out.
As we progress on, you'll realize that there are many more things you can remap other than the physical buttons.
!!!DISCLAIMER!!!
I'm not responsible if this doesn't work for you!
I'm not responsible if your capacitive buttons don't work!
!!!DISCLAIMER!!!
1. You'll need root access for this, otherwise it won't let you edit the file
2. Go to Play Store and download the app called Total Commander (you can use any other file manager that supports root, but this one worked best for me)
3. Open the app, and go to File system root
4. Go to data folder and when it asks you, grant it the permissions

Oh, and I see that you may be using CM, I'm not, so I'm not pretty sure if the files are same. I used stock ROM on my Galaxy S6, but I'm pretty sure any other ROM would work, as long as you have the S4 or S5 or S6 or even S7 and the latest version.
