Tethering - Sharp Aquos Crystal

Hi,
I was setting up this phone for my brother. Was surprised to see no root, roms, or unlocking as this is a really nice phone for the price.
I'm not a super gung ho android dev, but I have some reverse engineering experience so I'm gonna see if I can make some shellcode run on an apk or library with root perms and get a root shell running. No promises.
Anyway: If you want tethering, the Power Toggles app will turn on the hotspot without checking to see if you have hotspot account permissions on Boost. Set it up in the More Settings part of Android's Settings, it is the built-in Android tethering code.

Hi sorry for my English, can you explain what is the power toogle app is,thanks

You can use Power Toggles, or if hot spot is all you want you can use HotSpot Toggle. You have to add them as widgets.

Way people keep giving a options without testing first that work, the thetering not work on boost mobile

On 305SH, if you setup "Nova" Launcher and you create a shortcut, you select "Activities" and go in the list and select "Settings", and Inside "Thetering & Hotspot" :
You will have a menu to allow you tethering Bluetooth or Wifi.
It works great with 305SH (I tryed bluetooth).

Yes, with some programs tethering is active but teams are not conecting to the internet, is blockage for the operator in the case of 306 is boost mobile or sprint, someone will know how to disable this block

This didn't actually work for me. i had two "Tethering & Hotspot" options within settings but they both came up with the subscribe menu. the power toggles method however, did work.

Yes, I think we need Root access for that

foxfi works
Paid app called foxfi works for WiFi/USB tethering. Bluetooth tethering untested. Runs around $5 has a trail version with data caps for tethering. PDA net reqired on PC for USB tethering. No root required.
---------- Post added at 02:01 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:53 AM ----------
I use my aquos as a WiFi dongle for my laptop router>(WiFi)>aquos>(USB thether)>PC
I've used it spairingly as a WiFi hotspot so if boost sends you messages quarrying into how your using hotspot and why your not paying for it and any possible consequences that may occur is on you, I'm not responsible.
---------- Post added at 02:35 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:01 AM ----------
Would also like to clarify 306sh on boost mobile. Only tested on that network (obviously that model). So results may vary. Just use the Fofxi sprint app, you purchase a key to unlock paid version for regular and sprint I.e. one time buy for both versions on 1 google account=possible no root solution to free hotspot on multiple devices down the road . (I'm assuming it works with sprints but they charge overages so unless your somehow still grandfathered in to an unlimited plan I'd recommend against it) that works with boost, Straighttalk (Walmarts Tracphone plan), and virgin mobile, that I've tested, but is a hit or miss on phone models, so far only phone I've seen it work on KitKat so yay sharp for not caring about blocking app permission to hotspot toggle, don't update you might lose feature from app and have to wait till root.

Another's person can confirm that with boost Mobile and how I can do
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Free mobile app

Tried this before I saw this thread. Got the app because I didn't realize it would be such a pain in the ass to access toggles from a phone interface compared to my Nexus 7. Anyway, set it all up, input everything correctly and ... No internet access via the hotspot. Doesn't work.
306SH on Boost

I.FIGURED SINCE I FIGURED OUT A SORT OF TETHER ID POST HERE..
On phone must download pdanet
And on tablet pdanet tablet.
Use Bluetooth option and it works.speed test on my tablet was only at about .5mbps but satisfactory for browsing.

Is that a free app and does it work after latest update, foxfi (part of pdanet) works as well. My guess is the same reason but is a paid app so this seems much more promising since its free. Someone was saying it wasn't working for them but its worked fine for me, but I have yet to get the new update that came out (only update so far), does yours work after update, if so IMA update and test my luck with foxfi. Either way thanks for the heads up. And yes I was a little shocked at the lack of development for this phone as well, sharps got it on lock down.

It's not working because you have to root the phone. You can use the Visionary app in the Market (thanks MoDaCo) to do a temp root, and then run tethering app. I haven't found the temp root to be damaging, but you're doing this at your own risk.

Anyone else had any luck with this? I can get it to run, start the network, see the SSID, etc. But I never get an IP address on my client device. Worked fine on my G2, but doesn't work on the myTouch 4G.
Nevermind, I downloaded the newest version and it works perfectly:

This thread is talking about apples and oranges.
I'd like to see the "official" froyo tether work. The Google code one will work with or without the tethering plan, as will PDANet and other apps.
Once we see the "hotspot" feature working, we can reverse the setting that enables it without T-Mo's permission.

BTW, where did you get this info? When I launch the built-in app, I see the SSID but dhcp doesn't seem to work. There's no agreement (like most other trial-ware junk like Tmo TV) - so what gives? If it's free, it certainly isn't working so far.

Team Black Hat also has a hack that allows you to use the native hotspot app. I don't want to post the link to it, since the hack goes against the basics of morality (as their post explains.
However, if you're not worried about it, just google Team Black Hat hotspot hack or something similar.

(FYI) Barnacle wifi tether

Just to let you know that you can use this instead of changing apn settings, i tried that and seemed to freeze, used barnacle the first time this morning and its been working flawlessly all day.
Agreed... Barnacle works perfectly.
The APN route is cleaner, but unreliable.
I also agree, I am waiting to get on my home wireless before the market will allow me to download Barnacle thanks to AT&T market filtering, but I have been running a google tethering app for the time being and it is much easier and faster to use, just not as "clean" I guess.
My Phones:
Motorola MicroTAC Elite
Nokia 7160
Nokia 6340i
Nokia 6230
Nokia 6682
HTC Tilt
HTC Fuse
HTC Tilt2 (custom ROM)
Samsung Captivate (custom ROM,rooted)
Motorola Atrix (rooted)
I'm using "wireless tether for root". How is barnacle compared to that? wpa is the only difference i noticed in their features.

I don't see it listed on Android market anywhere.
You won't - ATT blocks it. Google search, they have a website to download the .apk. Have to be rooted of course to sideload it.

You do in fact need root access for this program and also if you use MarketAccess you can trick the market into thinking you are on T-Mobile and get Barnacle.
strange..
I rooted and tried it from app brain, but I keep getting the requested item could not be found. Is there another way i need to install it?
thanks
Of course it works, we have been talking about it since the 19th....

Search is your friend!
To get it to work you need root. Also you will need market enabler..which just tricks the market into thinking your phone runs on another service provider..as att blocks alot of apps

Ahhh, no..... while I can't say I know this for an absolute fact, DG said he's been APN tethering the crap out of his Atrix for the past week and AT&T hasn't "caught on," or nothing. With Barnacle, I'd say it would be even harder to "catch" someone wirelessly tethering - they never caught me or anyone else I know when I was using my Captivate!

You're right it does give that warning but it used to be when the warning popped up instead of hitting cancel you would just push your home button and wa la it worked! But now you get a pop up from foxfi asking to let them install a VPN and if u do this it will work again. And if by some chance u get the Verizon pop up again just hit home, not cancel.

Foxfi is an amazing app! It has totally saved me. I had a rooted note 2 that I used my hotspot on to give WiFi to my Nexus 7 that's installed in my car dash so that way I could use maps, music, etc. When getting the note 3 with Verizon, knowing it would be locked down, my biggest concern was losing my hotspot cause I need it for the car. And yes one can just root their N3 to get around this but if you're me, well then you have no windows PC computer therefore cannot root! Not this phone anyway. So Foxfi allowed me to keep my hotspot even without having root and for me anyway, that's the point of Foxfi! And that's why its so useful.

Curious you running the latest firmware? If your not, obviously do not accept it.
Also are you on "shared everything" plan? This makes a difference as that "shared everything" plans apparently have the hotspot free, but if your on a normal/unlimited plan, then its not free..
I ask because I'm on the latest firmware, with FoxFi/PdaNet and it does not work for me.

Yes, I took the latest update, which got me into this mess. I was running it without issue before this. I am still on grandfathered unlimited, which is why FoxFi is necessary for me. Just happy I got it back to working, albeit now with a necessary pattern lock, but a happy sacrifice to keep tethering.

Hello,
I seem to not be able to get FoxFi to work, I know this is redundant but can you confirm the following steps:
uninstall foxfi
uninstall foxfi key
remove certificate from the settings->security panel
reboot phone
install foxfi
install certificate with default vpn parameters
turn on foxfi wifi
when verizon dialog box pops up hit the home button
I've tried that 3-4 times and it doesn't seem to work. Previous to the OTA update there would be a red icon showing in the top left of the screen when the hotspot was enabled, that no longer shows up, just the foxfi icon saying wifi is available. I am unable to logon to the hotspot wifi though.
Thanks

Anyone had any luck with this? I can't find the file that OMJ is talking about to save my life. I don't see any attachments.
I've tried editing my build.prop and I've tried editing the default xml to change the rules and enforcement to 0.
The latter DID let the hotspot start for me. Other devices can connect. But they never get network connectivity.

I can't get it to work on mine! I've achieved root, installed the app, matched all the settings up....no internet connection. It's strange, my Ipad can see the network and it says it's connected. As soon as I connect it though I lose internet connection on both devices, can't load a single web page. Did you have this issue at all or would you have any idea what would cause this? HAH. I couldn't get it to work with this app (not initially anyway). I turned to his site to check if there were settings already available to use for the HTC 10 because it couldn't auto-detect the wifi adapter name. On his site, it says HTC users need to uninstall "TetherGuard" - system app.
Did that, figured I'd reboot and try the built in tethering which now works beautifully. Got it still within my refund window for Wifi Tether Router.
So some combination of what I posted above plus UNINSTALL TETHERGUARD! And life's good now. Thanks much.

You can use Titanium Backup to uninstall TetherGuard since you're rooted, instead of just disabling it.
Anyone want to post the specific changes/tweaks they've done? I've done changes to build.prop and default.xml (using the various settings found all over XDA) and also disabled/removed TetherGuard, but I'm still stuck at hotspot enabling but no data connection for any connected devices (data still works for the phone while hotspot is on though).

The apns have to be modified, we used to edit the database manually, but now edit in framework-res, I'll post a zip later.
