[Q] Why doesn't my WiFi work on new ROM builds? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a N900W8, and most ROM builds are for N9005.
I have never had a problem flashing N9005 builds, and all radios working fine, until I tried to flash Audax 11 (running Audax 10.8 now).
After flashing, during the initial setup screens, the WiFi toggle doesn't respond at all. Even if i skip through the rest of the setup, WiFi does not turn on at all.
I tried flashing XNOTE 21, and had the same problem.
Anyone have any ideas?
Baseband is N900W8VLUCNB7, if that matters.

May sound stupid but try flashing a full stock rom package via odin and check if it works with stock roms. That would be the first thing I'd try. Maybe some rom you tried included a modem/baseband that it causing the issue. Flashing back to stock and then switching to another rom again may help.

Flashing stock ROM won't help, and OP is correct. There are some ROMs indeed where WiFi just stops working. I flashed a ROM like that few days ago, I won't name it because of whatever reasons, but it is considered one of the most popular ROM for N9005 and N900T or some model and can be found under T Mobile section, and after flashing the ROM my WiFi just wouldn't turn on. I don't know what was the reason, didn't care to be honest, but then I saw that there are some flash-able zip packages which fixes the issue, again, didn't care to flash those so called fixes.
So OP might wanna look for one of those package for the ROM he is using.

[Q] Signal/connection lost on wakeup [Solved]

Hi all,
Since a couple of weeks i'm suffering from the following problem.
On newer roms the signal to my provider is lost upon waking up the phone (from standby/screen off).
A couple of things happened, i switched providers (from T-Mobile to Ziggo), i flashed a wrong modem which caused sound problems (from the omega rom 13.1). Since that moment i've had this problem. I'm not sure if its related to what happened, but that's what i know changed.
I've tried several modem files, though the modem version MI1 which works properly with Echoe v3, gives the same problems on Echoe v6, Omega 13.2 and Phoenix v5. Updating to XXUEMJ7 makes no difference at this point. I'm not quite sure whether its the modem at all due to this, but it seems the most obvious thing to look at when facing connection problems.
When the connection is active its working properly, i have data, i can call, receive SMS messages and everything. But press the off button once to lock the device, press it again to unlock it, and i see the signal status icon change to no connection.
At the moment with Omega 13.2 installed, its reconnecting quickly after i unlock my phone (something that didnt happen on the other roms), but it seems like very weird behavior. I've googled and searched the forums here for people with similar problems, but they've either not been documented yet, or i've been using the wrong keywords to find it.
Does anyone know what's going on, and how i can fix this?
Many thanks,
Amber

Hello,
Do not use roms based on mj7, use roms based on mj5 or go back to 4.2.2
I have tested all radios many kerneles with many mj7 based roms and always had this problem.
And use radio mj5 with mj5 roms likeecho illusion bobcat, visxii.
Get radio from here:

Thank you, switching back now, I'll get back on if it succeeded

[Q] Dialer goes black when making calls and no sound

I have an s4 from rogers (Canadian model) and initially had cyanogen mod as my rom but I realized that I was missing nearly 5 GB of storage on my phone. I read that to fix this I had to go back to stock using Odin. I went back to stock 4.2.2 using Odin, but then my WiFi stopped working. I couldn't turn WiFi on or search for networks. I then rooted my phone and installed a rom and my WiFi problem was fixed, but now I cant make calls. Every time I try to call someone my screen goes black and the recipient cannot hear me and I cannot hear them. Also, the sound on my phone does not work. I have flashed multiple roms and still get the same problem. Does anyone know any possible solution. I have looked around and many people have had the same problem, but no solution. Any help would be appreciated.
It's because you flashed an old rom (4.2.2) on a newer bootloader. That doesn't work. Flash the latest rom available for you phone.

I have flashed multiple roms and most of them were the latest ones (4.4.4). This still did not fix the problem. Is this what you mean?

I'm sorry, I gave some wrong advice.
It's probably because you are on the old bootloader but you are using a new modem. That's the cause for the problems on our s4. You have a different s4 and there is a different section for your device.
You have to be in this section:

They should be able to help you further there.

[Q] Switched back to touchwiz from cyanogenmod - radios arent working - advice?

Hi all,
I've switched back to Touchwiz for the camera after having cyanogenmod on the phone.
Now it seems like a catastrophe - WIFI won't work with some roms (specifically touchwiz, and now touchwiz wont even boot) while making and receiving calls and texts won't work with lolipop or with cyanogenmod.
I've wiped totally in recovery before installing anything to ensure no issues, but I am at my wits end, about to buy an iPhone tomorrow because I need a reliable phone for business.
Any advice on what I might do? I have the I337M version (rogers)
Marko
Be sure you're flashing the correct ROM for your device. If it is correct, flash the ROM again, and your issues should be solved.

I've attempted to flash the correct cyanogenmod multiple times, and even tried official ROMS - I've even gone as far as doing an emergency touchwiz install both through ODIN and KIES - no luck
Not CyanogenMod, but stock. Flash it twice, if you haven't already done so. And make sure the stock ROM is the one for your device.

No data connection on Android 5.x

Hi
I have a problem with my Galaxy S4 i9505 (I9505XXUFNB9). I can't get any data connection when i flash to a rom running Android 5.x. I've tried many different kinds (e.g. Cyanogenmod, Slimrom). There's just an exclamation mark next to the data symbol. Enabling roaming doesn't work, and changing to LTE etc. doesnt either. So i am beginning to suspect that it's a problem related to my phone and Android 5.x. When installing a custom rom i've used the version specific to my phone (jfltexx). There's no problem with the data connection running an Android version below 5.
Thanks in advance.

I figured that could be the issue, and i was previously looking into that but i gave up when i couldn't find a modem that seemed to match my model. Also i was worried if flashing the modem would be irreversible.
Could anyone point me to where i can find the correct modem update?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192025
If you don't know exactly how it works, then you also just flash one of the latest lollipop firmware versions our here.
OK, this is driving me crazy :S Today i decided to try two more custom 5.x roms before flashing the modem. I tried both the Omega and the Goldeneye custom roms. And now the problem was the WI-FI connection didn't work! I couldn't even enable the WI-FI connection at all. But the data connection worked...
Then i tried flashing several different modems (I9505XXUFNDG, I9505XXUFNB9, and I9505XXUFNC9), including the WI-FI fix from the thread above (NON-HLOS.bin), and none of it solved the WI-FI issue.
For now i've downgraded to the stock Android 4.4.2 rom...

A total newbie flasher needs help

Hi.. I'm in way over my head trying to install a more debloated Rom than the original stock. Unfortunately I didn't succeed very well.
I tried two different ROMS and both of them turned the Sim off and on every second or so. Lots of *pling* noises followed by a message that the Sim card was or wasn't present. It changed so much back and forth that I didn't even get a chance to enter the pin. I belive it is because of some combabillity issues between the rom and baseband/radio version
This lead me to the question: How do I know what rom and baseband would be the most suited for me? I'm living in Denmark (nordic country), but I simply can't figure what rom that is compatible with what baseband.
Boot into Odin mode and verify the model number. Then go to Sammobile.com, download a rom for your country, and install it with Odin.
Did you buy the phone in the country where it is being used?

Sorry if what I'm asking is obvious, but when I install a custom rom, I also need to make sure I install a compatible radio for my area, right?
Sammobile is only stock ROMS, right? And I'm trying to debloat her phone. So when installing a custom rom from this forum and either the reception is bad, it doesn't register Sim card properly or the like.. It might be because I need another baseband than the one that came with the rom right? And what do I need to look for in that regard?
Sorry, but I find it pretty complicated.
I recommend flashing a completely stock ROM, set it up, and make sure everything is working properly. If it doesn't work properly on a stock ROM, it is unlikely it will work properly on a custom ROM.
I find it best to run the latest bootloader and modem regardless of which ROM will be used with the phone.
Problems can sometimes occur when flashing current ROMs over old bootloaders and modems.

Thank you for the already helpful reply.
The thing you say about always flashing newest modem regardless of rom, is very helpful. I didnt even know you could do that. But my problem persist:
I already flashed back to stock, and it runs fine. SO far so good. The problem is that out of 16 GB, the bloatware is justing taking up to much space. But the last two rom I tried both had problems recognising the SIM card (toggled present/not present all the time).
Thats not the case on stock.. So how do I find the proper modem for my phone to use with a custom rom?
I keep seeing a link to sammobile, but all I can find is the bloated stock rom (or I dont know what to look for). Can I grab just the modem somewhere?
When installing a custom rom, it changes the current modem right? AFAIK I have to flash the proper modem afterwards, right?
And therein lies my problem: I dont know how to find the most suited one for my country (which is denmark). And the one that comes with the roms seems to be the wrong ones.
PS: A follow up question: Kernel and baseband/radio/modem is not the same, right? The kernel is not region specific, as the baseband/radio/modem, right?

Custom ROMs can't change your modem, they can't write to those partitions.
In other words, your modem will be the same no matter what. The only way to change it is to flash the appropriate modem files or an actual stock ROM.
SO with the stock rom working now, the modem/rom combination would not be the culprit if something doesnt work afterwards?
What could have been the issue with the sim card connecting and disconnecting every second on the other rom I tried? (Iperium/Imperial something)

What I said is that a custom ROM can't change your modem. But that doesn't mean it can't be affected by your modem.
You may want to read Imperium ROM's install instructions very carefully, cuz I'm pretty sure you missed something important.
Doh.. You might be right.. Ill try flashing the tar files in Odin.
But I just recently got my phone to behave when connecting on Odin.. It also connected back and forth all the time. Putting a USB hub in the middle solved it though (and made it possible to revert to stock). Any idea wht that was about? I reckon either some driver or USB power problem? But Im really fumbling understanding it all, and when it acts up at the same time, even the most simple problems can be hard to see through (because there is always the uncertainty that I misunderstood something basic)..
Just having this conversation helped me understand a lot better how the ROMs and modem is connected (or more precise: How they are not).
And I actually may have had the right baseband all along (Nordic Countries). I will know when I tried flashing the rom again.
Thank you very much
It doesn't matter where you are from, the phone should work with any baseband in any country.
The thing is that some ROMs (like Imperium here) may require a different modem to function properly. In this case, it may require the PG1 modem (listed in the Imperium thread) to solve your problems.
Before flashing a stock ROM, confirm the model # in download mode.
If you want a debloated stock ROM, you could flash a stock ROM, flash TWRP recopvery, flash supersu for root, and use Titanium Backup to freeze or uninstall apps.
So right now I tried flashing the Resurrection Remix ROM, but it wont make any calls (a voice just says that the number cant be reached, even though I know the numbers exist). What could be the case there?
The modem and bootloader may be too old.
can it also be to new?
I have consulted the below site several times, but the link is dead to the page where I can look up what modem to use.
Can someone please point me in the right direction of which to use?
This site: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192025
What modem should I choose for my phone? Living in Denamrk and trying with the ressurection remix rom? I tried 3 different of the modems starting with XX but all have the same problem: I cant make any calls. It just says that "there isnt any members on the selected number".
Making calls works fine on stock rom

The ones linked in the Imperium ROM thread are the newest.
And no, it can't be too new.
It's probably something related to your phone model not being fully supported by the ROM.
JDCTeam ROMs should work, because they support a wide range of S4 models.
I got stock rom to work (again again)
And now I managed to flash the JDC Team you recommended and still having the baseband from the stock rom (Which were able to make calls)
But whatyaknow.. I STILL cant make outgoing calls on the custom roms! What in the world can be the problem? I spent the whole day on this.
.. I should be able to make outgoing calls without flashing Gapps, right?
Yes, you should be able to make calls without gapps.
You flashed the latest stock rom and confirmed everything works?
You confirmed the model number in download mode?
