Bad build quality : Nexus letters falling off - Nexus 6 General

I am wondering if this is common issue?
More importantly, anyone with white model have this problem too?
I am thinking to cancel my order and wait for later batch if that could make difference ...

Oh wow... I was hoping this wasn't an issue anymore. Hasn't happened to my midnight blue yet.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk

if it is the same problem the M8 has it is not really fix able without a full change over. Its the glue that holds the letters on. The glue that holds the letters on the HTC One M8, HTC Logo starts to fail after the phone is heated over and over again. I am not surprised the N6 has the same problem. I think it looks better without letters really. I am sure the white has the same problem. You may be able to use super glue after it falls off and see if that is better.

no problems here. Im a daily power user too.

I got this pretty badly on my Nexus 5.

It's kind of a non-issue in my opinion.

Non issue? For a 700 dollar phone, it certainly is an issue. Had this happen on my nexus 5. Hope this is a rare occurrence.

There's another thread somewhere here on this. People that ordered from Motorola said Moto is doing advance replacement for this issue. I'd hope Google would do the same thing for gp orders.

Yup, non-issue. I don't expect things like that to stay in forever. That's like saying that the coating on my drums should never wear off, but it does.

It's an issue with a $700 phone, and we're not talking about 'forever'... we're talking about letters falling off with only days of use. I would be pissed if it happened to me. That would be equivalent of the paint peeling off your drum within days after purchase.

So, if you buy a new car it's OK if all the brand and model logos fall off in the first week of ownership? IMO, it makes the phone look really cheap.

Drums are hit where the coating is... Man, not everybody is equipped with common sense.
Car emblems hardly ever fall off but if they did, would it be a non-issue?

I wonder if the AT&T logo will just fall off sometime?

I could understand if after a year and it happened but after a few days? That's not a non issue its a defect. If it happens to mine I will be demanding a new phone.

As long as the car served it's primary function, I don't care if the logos came off. But that's just me.

So we've got this issue but I've only seen one picture of it? Also the pic posted here has a crooked letter "n" on the curved part what's up with that....

Looks like a bad example of photoshop-ing skills....
When are the letters of the device not straight, or have jagged edges?? Unless the owner tried "fixing" the peeling with white out?

I thought it might be interesting to see how common this issue is. I am calling it a design flaw.
Single, waist high drop onto tile kitchen floor.
It is an awesome phone but people should be aware how easily this device breaks/cracks.

Unfortunate, but all of these slim smartphones with big nice screens will crack if they hit a hard surface in a certain angle. Looks like your phone hit the floor corner first, that is often big trouble.

How can you call it a design flaw when you drop them? So it's not peoples fault when they drop things and ended up breaking but it's company's who made the product? I like to know what Samsung will say to your comment.....

have you guys watched this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJuNgBkloFE
Im afraid i must echo the comments above. Dropping onto a tile floor would never end well and would have been amazed had it survived scratch/damage free. I've dropped mine a couple times but my foot has broken the floor and i've been lucky. If it had say cracked in my pocked i'd call it a design floor, but this is sadly an accident.
Wow. No Trolls here.
Yeeeeeeah, we trolls sympathize with you. I'd hate to break my phone! (>_>)
I am sticking with design flaw regardless of the above flamers.
Drop testing is a standard part of QC on all phones. Some manufacturers hold in the highest regard as part of QC.
I believe drop test QC was inadequate on this product.
My only point is to make potential buyers aware of the issue. I still think the phone is awesome and worth buying but people need to know that the phone on its own is inadequately protected from standard daily use so some kind of helmet is recommended.
You need to reconsider your definition of the word "troll". They are not trolling you for a reaction; they are advising you that dropping a glass-fronted device onto its corner on a tile floor is pretty much guaranteed to crack it. It's not a design flaw.
First thing I did when I got my S3 was buy a cover and screen protector.
With such an expensive phone I believe its essential
Still a good post to remind us all, that we should really get a protective case.
None yet here, been lazy, hate shopping, might have to get one online
Swyped on GT-I9300 - XXDLIB - Siyah kernel - JKay & Thunderbolt tweaks.
This is mine.
The crack appeared 2 weeks after I bought it. I haven't dropped it and I don't know how this happened.
Hopefully it's "stable" and it's not getting worse with time. It's been more than a month now.
I had been told that warranty wouldn't cover this so I haven't done anything.
@anthropolyte
If one is not part of the solution one is part of the... a Troll.
No. A troll is someone who baits someone in order to annoy them and get a reaction. People on here are advising you that because you dropped your phone onto a tiled floor, you're responsible for what resulted, not Samsung.
Do you call everyone who corrects you or disagrees with you a troll?

No the screen for this phone is expensive. Around $130 from China, plus tax and customs and we are in the neigbourhood of 130€ again, the same if I buy it directly from the LG importer for my country, plus I won't have to wait a month to arrive..

Just yesterday I dropped my phone 3 feet onto a concrete floor. It bounced at least 2 times. I have on a poetic bumper with no screen protector and not a scratch or mark on the phone at all.

maybe Samsung/Apple will fight over this and send him a new phone and make a big thing... lol
I noticed a few things
1st He says the phone was in his rear pocket and then burn marks are of his legs.
2nd The OPO also seems like it had an impact from outside heat instead of bursting from inside.
He maybe honest but I've had a phone explode on me and the damage wasn't this severe.
This is likely simply an issue with the individual device/battery, I doubt OnePlus have cheaped out on the battery and every smartphone uses a Lithium Ion or Lithium Polymer battery. Once these batteries have heated up or malfunctioned badly, due to the high concentration of power in a small area there is nothing stopping the reaction continuing. Similar things happen regularly with Samsung phones and even iPhones.
OnePlus are going to reimburse him for the phone, his clothes, and any medical bills.
Tl;Dr - seems like a catastrophic failure that is just in the nature if Lithium Ion/polymer batteries

Unless your ass has a solid 90 degree angle and its edge rests dead center on the OnePlus One, and you weigh more than 300 or so pounds, you're you not going to "puncture" the battery...

What are you talking about, the burn marks are exactly where they should be on the side of his butt, right where the the side of the back pocket burned and the side that bursted on the OnePlus One.
The the plastic melted exactly as it should if the heat was applied from the interior of the phone too...

WTF ATT!!

So I got my phone today and low and behold I have some serious (at least to me) blemishes and scratches on the back. Some pics below. I know they may not seem too bad but come on, this is a brand new phone, and unexceptable if you ask me. So I actually go to my nearby ATT store to see if they have stock already so they can swap it out and they don't have any yet. You could see it in the eyes of the workers that they hadn't seen one yet. Borderline oogling over it.
Anyways, they say call ATT and they'll send me another. I call and low and behold they CAN send me a replacement (not overnight mind you, I'd have to pay for that), but as I had to remind them, there is a backorder for it so they couldn't tell me when I'd get it. All this time I wouldn't be able to activate the phone. I say screw it, I'll keep it but you gotta give me something here. All they can do open a customer credit report and see if it goes through. Suffice it to say.....I'm pissed.

Wow. Was it shipped in bag full of rocks?
Thats how mine is from GPlay! Not as bad as yours but the same type of marks.... Seems like it was slid around and there was a bunch of dust/debris in the box on the phone.. I called them up right after I saw and they were gonna set me up with a new replacement but there is a problem with there system with that apparently...:roll eyes: So I have to wait for them to fix that then get in contact with me to set up the replacement... Im using this one in a case in the mean time but it definitely shouldn't fly to get one that looks this way!
Looks like someone was skate boarding on it before shipping. Lol I would return it. There is no fu#king way I pay over $700 for a screwed up phone.

I think it has some room to move because there doesn't seem to be anything keeping it in place or anything protective it has to sit on. Its just sitting on indent of the phone with the documentation. I think it happened during shipping possibly especially if it was man handled it could bounce around and scuff up but idk? i don't see how sliding on cardboard could cause marks like that.
Im also still waiting on Gplay to reply and fix there system to get me a new replacement...
Did you have any issues getting AT&T to initiate the return? This is ridiculous, mine has this too.

AT&T wouldn't have done it themselves, just semantically speaking.
They would have made a deal with the OEM (Motorola) to make the modifications on their behalf before packaging.
Not defending AT&T or anything, of course.

Yea I didn't even check the source. It could always be a battery defect. I do hope that a proper investigation is done and the cause of the problem found. I still consider only one incident so far a major success.
My first Nexus 6 had it's back coming off. It didn't come off so I could see under it but it was a good 2 mm gap in the end. If I pressed on the back it felt like something was pushing it out, and it wasn't shaped as it was supposed to since it wasn't thinner towards the lower part of the phone like my new one.
This leads me to believe it was the battery expanding that caused the issue. This also leads me to believe that a lot of the backs that starts to come off is due to the battery expanding. I'd say that it's a relatively common problem since I read a lot of people having that problem. That said, I haven't read of any of the batteries exploding yet except for this one. I still think it's a problem that is more common than it should be.
Lets not become a circle jerk
Yes there have been at least three reports of the battery expanding on reddit.

These 3 reported incidents are not of what you would call biblical scale. Why is this even an issue, if such rare incident would occur it will be fixed under warranty. This is realy blown out of proportion imo :silly:

I never said that 3 cases=needing to file a class action law suit lol. Yes its common sense that 3 isnt that big of a deal. On the other hand there are posts in here that are ridiculous, OH MAYBE SHE DROPPED HER PHONE!!!!!
OR "mythical exploding battery"
Hence my circle jerk comment

Just wondering but since the "*insert problem here* gate" term is passed around so much... What exactly was the water issue?
In other news, a battery puffing up is not an explosion or else we would use batteries in bombs. Cheaper than C4 haha.
