App update notification after upgrading to Lollipop - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I just updated my Nexus 4 to Lollipop and I sometimes get this notification:
An application requires an updat..
Requested by Google Play services
Whenever I tap it, it just brings me to the Play Store, in which I have no updates.
I updated to Lollipop via the OTA and have never flashed/unlocked/restored my phone; it's basically been on the same ROM since I bought it.
Any ideas how I can fix this notification?
Thanks.

Ya, this seems to be a bit of a bug. Try to download the latest version of Google Play Services apk from apkmirror and install. It may or may not resolve the issue but it'll not harm.

Is it safe to manually install new version of Play services?

Hello,
Not sure if this is the correct forum to ask, sorry if it isn't.
I've noticed that after the lollipop upgrade I don't have the "smart lock" option in my settings->security. After digging through the www for a while it seems that I don't have the latest Google play services update (which brings the "trusted places" feature).
Is this correct? This is the reason I'm not seeing the "smart lock' feature?
Play store says I have the latest version (I currently have 436, which is NOT the latest version). Why? I got the play services update this morning and yet it's not the latest version. Should I wait a little longer for the update?
Is it safe to update the latest Google play services manually? apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-play-services/google-play-services-6-5-87-1599771-446-apk
Thanks in advance.

apk mirror is a site of android police to upload their apk's. i trust them and i installed stuff from there a lot of times. the apk signatures are correct and the apk update correctly to newer versions after the insallation. so it is a matter of trusting the source. i trust them so a lot of other readers.
android police is a serious site. so do your research about the site and decide for yourself if you are willing to trust them or not.
P.S. the reason that you don't have the latest version is that the roll out is usually done within the span of a few days to weeks depending of where you are. so the update will come eventually.

I always prefer to do the update the "regular way", via play store, so according to your advice I think I'll wait a little longer for the update.
Thanks. :good:

for me the only reason to update via apk mirror is if i want to check something immediately. for example when the new google apps with material design was out i updated from there instead of waiting. i couldn't help my self

Well, in my case it's just a cool new feature I want to try out. I'll give it a few more days and if it won't come on it's own then I'll update it manually.
It's basically just getting the apk and running it (wherever it's located), correct?

you download the apk on your phone and install it like any other app. it is called side loading. there is an option under settings/security to allow you install apps outside the play store if you haven't done it already you must unclick it.

Yep, I'm familiar with this option, but thanks for reminding me to recheck it before installing. :good:

glad to help
For the Nexus 4 (with Lollipop), I believe this is the version you want from apk mirror:
Google Play services 6.5.87 (1599771-436)
Edit: the notes section on apk mirror explains the version naming/numbering for the Play Services apks. The last three digits indicate which version of Play Services is right for your device.
I was notified immediately after upgrading to L that my Google Services are outdated and I was redirected to Play Store before even could get to home screen. Maybe it only happens after standard OTA...?

It's perfectly safe, as it is the exact same version you will recieve from play store.
I'm not sure what the problem is anymore.
I looked at a friend's Nexus 4 that was also updated with Lollipop and he has the same Google play services build as me and he still gets the 'smart lock' option.
Could it be something with the settings on my phone? Maybe I need to do something in order to enable it? I've already tried enabling a security lock screen but that didn't help.

Note 3 SM-N9005 Google play services problem

I just bought the Note 3 SM-N9005 and i have problem with the google services. My apps want me to update google services but when i open the app on Play Store it shows that my device isn't supported by this version of the app and I can't update it! I don't have the "Uninstall updates" button in app settings.I'm on stock android 5.0.Any ideas?
Thanks in advance !
Is this a brand new phone??
I have a similar problem since yesterday. Until now, everything was fine (for 3 years). Yesterday I began to get " google play services has stopped". Continuously.
I tried a lot of things ( wipe cache, remove updates, etc) until I finally went for a factory reset.
Everything was fine. Until I wanted to use my Google apps. No synch, no GPS positioning, etc. The phone wants me to upgrade my Google services app. But on the pay store, my device is said to be incompatible.
I called google support : no solution.
I downloaded an official app with latest version for my phone and android version. Back to the continously popped up messages "google play services had stopped". Had to down grade to former version.
Currently I am stuck.
If anyone had an idea. ..

Yes it is brand new.
It was with US ROM and I flashed my countrys ROM to see if that works but nothing has changed...
I downloaded the latest play services apk from another website and installed it on my device. It seems to be working perfectly now but whenever a new update comes out i will be prompted to update it again and I will have to wait untill the new update comes on 3rd party website so I can download it from there.Even when i updated it manually,in Play Store it still says that my device is not compatible with this version of the app...Any ideas ?
P.S : I've tried clearing both play store and play services caches and uninstalling updates but that won't fix it.Play store still shows the same thing.
The Note 3 came with 7.1 version on play services, now I updated it to 9.2.25 and still the same result...

Having the same issue on my dad's old Note 3. Even tried flashing the latest firmware from sammobile and factory reset, it still has the same error. Looks like something might have screwed up on google's side

So lets hope they fix it sooner, because it limits almost my whole phone...Even Youtube and Whatsapp are not usable...
You can always try;
- reset app preferences
- disable Play Store & restore to factory version.
- Clear data & cache of Google Play Services & Framework
- If rooted, flash updated gapps.

Or you can try this if rooted and have custom recovery...like TWRP 2.8.7.0. Install Phronesis Rom Version 1.2 and enjoy the sweet Marshmallow 6.0.1. Phone model SM-N9005.

Yes it does. The same IMEI is displayed on box, phone(dialing *#06#) and under the battery I've checked it online and that IMEI belongs to the same Note 3 device.
Model number in download mode is correct? If yes, I am at a loss as to why this is happening.
This is different issue but maybe you could try.
Yesterday my phone had connection issue to playstore. It tells me no internet connection. Cleared cache and data for playstore and google play service, flashed newer playstore version but in no avail.
Remove my google account and re-register, problem solved.

Possible Play store problem as i have seen this twice in the last few days .
same problem
I have two Note3 and can't install the latest Google Play Service. Playstore-Screenshot:
moja.ninja/playstore.jpg
Both have the latest samsung firmware (unrooted).
One of them I reset yesterday -> no change. The current version of the play service is too old und some apps don't work.
On the other device I have not the latest version, but all apps are running.
Any solution?
thanks
The same problem
I did a factory reset yesterday and after that I couldn't update Google Services App and since every other Google App goes through this Google Services, this renders my phone half-useless...

Unable to install many yotaphone apps..

"no eligible devices for app install"
This is what I get when I try to install "YotaMap for YotaPhone" directly from my laptop's browser. I ended up doing this because these apps don't even show in the play store if I search for them in the phone itself.
I got my Yotaphone 2 yesterday and I was thrilled to see what kind of things I can do with the back display .. but .. why are all the fun apps unavailable to me? Does the location matter?
Do you guys have any idea what can cause this behavior?
PP: this happens not only with the "YotaMap" but with many other Yota apps I was able to find in the play store from the browser.

Which version of Android are you running? If you flash to the latest firmware all available apps can be installed from the YotaStore, which in itself is an app on the latest firmware.

The phone is running android 4.4.3
I don't know how to upgrade it actually. My last phone notified me that it wants to upgrade to 5 .. and I just clicked "do it!".

Read through this post to find out how to upgrade. Also try searching YotaFlasher in the forum.

I haven't received Google Assistant yet.

Okay, so you might have seen plenty of these posts but I don't know why I haven't received it yet. Phones in my region have gotten it yet I haven't. Here is some info that might help. My phone is updated to Android 7.0 and has Google Play Services 10.2.98 and the Google App is updated with the current version. So, I don't know why I don't have it yet. Thank you by the way.
The rollout is Google Account based so you will get it sooner or later. You might want to update to 10.2.99 Play Services, try a soft reset and/or accessing Google settings which may trigger it (as far as I heard).
Maybe you should update to
Google Play services 10.5.37 beta
wont let me install latest version

Updated play services to that beta build a few weeks back, I'm still waiting for Google assistant to be enabled on my S7 edge. Been using the assistant on my s4 for a few months though with a custom nougat rom and I like it.

Have you wiped date from play store and play services app within android app settings?
