I had put in an idea for any developers hanging around in RW's forums, on to have possible custom roms. This may or may not be possible depending if you can get around the bootloader/no custom kernels- lock. I do not have a RW phone myself, so I cannot work on this project, and I don't have much experience in customizing roms myself, though importing CM's code shouldn't be to hard.

I have request to all Devs that also compile kernels by themselves.
Please use ipfilter owner kernel module along with iptables. It is essential for DroidWall application to work. It won't make difference to you, but to many people it will and this little fact does matter when some of users choose to or not to use particular ROM. I know you're not getting paid for your hard work so this is a kind request, definitely not a demand. In the end, it will make your ROM more popular.
In 1.5 times I could always flash Teknologists Kernel, but now almost everyone customize kernel for his 2.1 ROM.
As far as I tested many 2.1-2.2 ROMs, only CM6 builds and Villain have everything needed.

if it would be that easy, everybody would do it
what do you mean by "good with computers"? do you know how to write code (C/C++)? are you yet experienced with running linux? have you ever compiled a kernel before? do you want to make a source-(AOSP)-rom (then you can get the source here: http://source.android.com/ and here: http://opensource.samsung.com/) or do you want to just theme and customize a stock firmware?
i think there are already some tutorials around which will help you in the beginning. just google for them!
i haven't done custom rom development myself but i would really like to get some (clean) aosp goodness on this phone. i am experienced with linux (use it since 6 years as primary os) and i can code c/c++/asm. so if you are in fact serious and able to go all the way. i would appreciate to help!

I'm pretty able to develop with Eclipse, so android sdk. Linux quite good, i prefer to use windows, but i know linux is necessary. First of all i'd like to know how to customize GALAXY fw and then i'll study how to compile a kernel, no one during my life helps me, and it's difficult for me because i'm not good with english and all tutorials are in english!

It's not difficult if you're comfortable with linux, shell scripts, custom kernels, and cross compiling.
Basically that's pretty much all it needs, Android systems are very similiar to a running linux system.
Boot off a bootloader (usually closed sourced) into kernel and initrd, then init loads the drivers, system and configs, after which is pretty much to your taste and likings.
Source code of android, samsung kernel source, are available online, google is your friend.
so... here's what i'm thinking.
how about setting up a vmware machine with all the source code for android on it, so that when a new version comes out, you can compile your own rather than waiting and then flash it to your phone. you could add your own modifications and any others that are out there.
this is a win / win situation as you get your own compilation, your own custom build and can screw about with the code it as much as you want as it's on a virtual machine.
you could update the android source code by pulling it online. and because it's a virtual machine, you don't need to worry about compilation issues across different machines.
i'm thinking about doing it - who'd be interested?
That's what I'm doing. It's FUN but to be honest it's quite a pain in the a$$ when you sync the master branch, compile, flash, and found out that the resulted ROM does not working properly and can't find any information about how to fix it.
BTW, I can hardly find the info on modifications -- most topics here are ready-to-flash ROM releases but no info on development. I did found some useful information in Nexus One forums, though.
Any suggestions on where can we find the resources regarding compilation and modification of AOSP?
well, my instincts tell me the modifications are "closed-source", hidden away from you. who knows what sorts of nasties are in the actual rom that's sitting on your phone. logging your every move, grabbing every site you visit, logging everything you type etc.
so, what's needed for a more successful dev community as far as i'm concerned is to allow the users to pick and choose what mods they want. this is an adp after all, and is one of the easiest phones to compile for.
so, if there's an active community compiling their own roms, then mods will perhaps become more open source with diffs / additions to the android source, which in itself will be better for users, developers and heck, who knows who might actually add it to the android source?

I recently rooted my Galaxy Y and installed CyanogenMod 7.2. After spending time trying to get Google Play to function (I have tried different things and searched on here) but being unable to I decided to try another ROM.
It seems very hard however to get straightforward and comprehensive details on here for anything i.e. whether a different kernel is required, what the installation procedure is in terms of wiping and mounting things. There seems to be a lot of assumed knowledge when things are posted.
So, can someone please recommend a ROM or ROMS with links to precise instructions on installation. I'm looking for something stable, quick, clean and customisable. Things that sound like they might suit are AOSP, EVO and Oxygen.

I own a Galaxy J500FN and have been unsuccessfully searching the web for a custom rom for my device.
I have used PA on both my S4 and S4 mini and would be very glad (so would many others) if somebody could dedicate some time on working on a build for this device?
It currently ships Lollipop 5.1.1 out of the box.
There is no CWM Recovery build for this device but there is a TWRP Recovery Build that CTxz has kindly developed for us.
I am more than happy to flash experimental builds onto my device to help develop a custom ROM for it.

P.S: As many others have found, all root methods currently known for this device will trip the knox security.
No plans as we don't dev for devices we don't own or have access to. It is not on our radar at all, as with most Samsung devices.

And what exactly does that do for us? That doesn't put a device in a developer's hand and they have ZERO way to test it. We know nothing about the device and we don't care to. It is not on the radar, it is not in the cards....

Not going to happen.
Please realize that developing for a device isn't easy. Even well documented ones bring along lots of hiccups along the way. There is no way in hell that we will take on a device request for a device that we don't own or plan on ever owning.
Here's a little FYI for you: we prefer Nexus devices or devices where the manufacturer/OEM is willing to allow/support bootloader unlocks, roms, development.
My advice to you: Learn how to bring up the device yourself, and build unofficials for yourself. This site was founded on being a resource BY developers FOR developers. Use the information available to you to build your own.
