[Q] No Call Option Access GPE ROM for Galaxy S4! [Android 4.4.4] - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys
This is the first time I have rooted and installed a custom Rom
I installed one called GPE Rom for Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.4 ( sorry cannot put link due to restrictions)
Everything looks and works ok but when I make a call. The screen just goes black and I cannot access any of the call progress options such as hang-up, Speaker, etc...
I can only press home button and access the phones home button and thats it
If the other person does not hand up the only way to hand up is to turn off the phone
Is there any way to fix this? or a more stable Stock Android ROM for Samsung Galaxy S4 GT9505 ?
Just made a phone call, after the call, they hang up. And I had to restart the phone to access it. Screen was just blank..

Maybe your proximity sensor is dirty and call app detect it. Try to verify this with an app.

I think you are right
The original OS the screen went black but was still usable when press the home screen after I got my screen and digitizer replaced
Looked on google and found this can happen after screen replacement.
Downloaded a Proximity Sensor app and it says it detects it but keeps saying "last distance reported 0.0 cm"

If the distance is 0.0 that means proximity sensor is "covered", so maybe is a bad screen position or is dirty.

Cool
I guess I can take it back to shop but not sure if they'll fix for free after 6 or so months, because I just thought thats how it is after screen replacement

Or you can use the Xposed module "Disable Proximity"

Maybe is just dust, try with compressed air in speaker. There is a thread with procedure explanation.

Screen turns off when calling - help

As per title, the screen turns off when I am making a call (so the call didn't even started ringing), or when I am answering one. I don't want this! What's worse, it's that it's almost impossible to make it turn on again if I want to end the call or what not.
How can I stop the phone to turn off the screen? What's even more frustrating is that it doesn't even turn on when I press the power button. Sometimes I find myself keep spamming pressing the power button and it turns on for half a second then turns back off.
It's really frustrating me. Help please?
Remove your screen protector, or cut away the portion of it that is covering the proximity sensor.
Have you got a screen protector applied? If so, this will be the problem as it covers the sensors (top left of the screen) these sense when the phone is close to your face during a call and switch off the screen...
From the Nexus 4000
Actually, I do NOT have a screen protector. And here is the thing. The phone turns off even when it's not next to my face and I'm holding it normally in my hand and looking at it (you know, when you normally browse with your phone etc). I click to make the call, and the phone turns off more often than not. Or if I answer a phone call (again looking at the phone, not putting it next to my ear), the phone will turn off.
It's like the sensor always activates when making, receiving phones. And the power button won't even work to turn on the screen again.
Must be a fault then, I'd take it back for an exchange... can't think what else it could be.
From the Nexus 4000
---------- Post added at 05:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:53 PM ----------
is there anything else that might be covering the sensor for the screen?

I use this one.
AndroSensor reports 5cm on the proximity sensor (12,7 mA)
Sensor Test I think it reports as working properly. Under Proximity 0: it's either 5.000305 or 0 when my hand goes close to the sensor. It seems to switch to 0 as it should (at around 5cm).
So the sensors say it works correctly, but yet I have these problems where the screen just shuts down and there is nothing around the sensor (I just keep the phone at a normal distance of 50cm or so looking at it)
If your phone is stock, I would say try a hard reset first, and if it is still that way it looks like you may have received a dud.
If you are running aftermarket rom... probably a bug.

[Q] Disabling magnetic proximity 'S View' sensor

Hi,
Just wondering if anybody knows if there are any ROMs available which allow you to disable the magnetic proximity sensor, just below the volume down rocker on the S4?
I work in an aluminium smelter and in production areas, the magnetic fields are very high due to the high DC current (240kA) used in the smelting process. What this means is that my S4 is unusable as the magnetic field holds the 'S View' sensor in its closed position as though an S case is closed. i.e. the phone only displays 'S View' mode rendering it useless in production areas.
Thanks
Paul

I've tried this, but it doesn't disable the S View mode. Try yourself with a fridge magnet.
Use Elixir from the Play Store.
The S View cover does not use magnetic sensor. It uses proximity sensor.

Did elixir work?
I to am trying to get that magnet disabled.
At work so I can't try elixir.
There are actually 2magnets.
One by the volume and the other is by the sensors above the screen.
Thanks.

If you're willing to install Xposed I can make a quick module to disable S-View. However some apps like the phone app might still respond to it as they handle it themselves rather than using the framework. That shouldn't be too annoying though.
Edit: btw this is better suited as a kernel patch to disable the sensor rather than the S-View screen. That might slightly lower consumption and would work better, but for warranty reasons I can see why a kernel patch would be annoying.

Can I ask the opposite question lol!
Is there a way to turn a standard wallet case in to an S-View by installing a magnet somewhere on the flap or something? Is it possible to make it work?

Yes. Get a hold of a magnet, it has to be reasonabley strong, I found that a fridge magnet was not strong enough, and hold it close to the volume down button and move it about a bit and find the optimum position, I actually find the magnet flat against the back or front near vol. Down works best, just be careful of screen.

It's as close as you can get without disabling the sensor. I didn't hook into the phone so that might still show the S-View window, but that's no biggie. Also, the Smart Stay icon disappears, but hey, that can be a plus

Hi all !!
Thank you for the great forum!!
I installed the module and the S-view is not shown, but the touch screen is disabled.
I use a magnetic car holder and every time I hang up the phone to it, the S-lock the screen view!
I don't know if it's possible, but it could be a great thing to change the phone's behavior when the magnetic sensor detects a magnetic field, for example, you can choose to put the phone in car mode.
Thank you very much

[4.2.2] In-call proximity sensor behavior - some observations [Solved]

I'm sure most are familiar with proximity sensor issues in calls on 4.2.2 roms. It appears that everyone's experiences differ a bit. I've seen some say that buttons are pressed when the screen is off. For others, and myself, the screen doesn't turn off.
When I first moved to 4.2.2, I was pleased to find the Xposed module that fixes the issue. However, after I activated it, I had a black screen issue. During calls (if more than a few minutes), the screen/device would become completely unresponsive (temporarily). It wouldn't even respond to a long press of the power button. I attributed this to the xposed module and turned it off.
Unsurprisingly, the original issue resurfaced. I noticed that it seemed more pronounced when receiving a call (and the device was previously idle). It seemed as though the device wasn't waking up the proximity sensor when calls were received. I created a Tasker profile (with Secure Settings) to execute a "wake device" action when phone calls (incoming) are detected. It has been a week since I created this, and I haven't seen the problem since.
For anyone still experiencing the issue, this may be a solution.
EDIT: Solution quoted below.

Interesting solution, this drove me crazy on a 4.2.2 ROM..... I'm on 4.3 now, and thankfully the issue isn't present. I really hope AT&T will stumble up to an official 4.3 release and skip 4.2.2.
Only experienced this on 4.1.2, all 4.2.2 roms have been fine for me

I'm on stock 4.2.2 and I have no proximity sensor issues. I've had some issues on 4.1.2.
Everybody has the proximity sensor issue: plug in the headphones, cover the sensor, make someone call you, after the call, the screen will wake. That will happen in your pocket, which is very bad. The only solution that works for me is copas' proximity tool extension (on Google play), which I enable every time I am using headphones...

No, you didn't understand. Sensor works during phone call. After hanging up, either the other party hangs, or you via the headphones button, screen turns on. This is a bug in all HTC devices, as far as I know. Try it. Make someone call you, cover the proximity sensor with your fingers, tell them to hang up, while still covering the sensor (simulating the phone is in pocket or bag) and see what happens. Screen will turn on.

Disable home button?

Is there a way to disable the home button from being on all the time? I can't for the life of me understand why this is a "feature". I am always turning on the display when I pull the phone out of my pocket, or it turns on in my pocket. I really dislike this and would like to turn it off. I've already set the sensitivity to lowest.

Go to settings -> lock screen and security - always on display - content to show - choose "clock or information"
Then go to
settings -> display -> navigation bar - turn off "Unlock with Home button"
in this menu, also decrease the sensitivity for hard press so you don't accidentally activate it
Even with the icon turned off, That area is still a way to unlock the phone but requires a hard press after doing the above
there is a setting under display to keep screen turned off inside pocket, that should solve your problem.
Thanks for the info guys. I have already done all of that. I was hoping for a way to just turn it off.

Seriously this is so annoying. I've already changed those settings as well and it changes nothing.
settings -> display -> navigation bar - turn off "Unlock with Home button" seems like it would be a the obvious way to disable it but it does nothing.
There are 3 options in always on display. Make sure you change off the default which is "clock or information and home". I didn't have to change the sensitivity and can unlock by pressing the screen without the button being visible. This actually got me to look at always on again and schedule a screen the works for me.

This must be fixed in a future update! I have also changed all of the above settings and my phone turns on in my pocket dozens of times a day and my battery life has been awful because of it. I like the pressure button, it really cool to use it to go home from any full screen app, but why can it be used to turn on the screen when it's off? There is a power button on the side to turn it on!
for me, turn on that unlock feature doesn't help anything
is a software problem I suppose
I have same problem,

Next time I had pattern lock, but it went to upper menue and presses wifi and gps off.
So this problem is really bad, I am just thinking to sell my S8+ and to buy a conventional smartphone with a normal button.

I've had similar issues. It has turned in in my pocket and taken a bunch of blank photos. There really needs to be an option to disable the button completely, the hardware buttons works just fine.
I've found that enabling the option "keep screen turned off" to keep the screen off in dark locations like pocket/purse in display settings along with the lowest home button sensitivity helps though.

It is true, also in point of fact the keep screen off in pocket never worked for me going back several Samsung phones. A lil sweat is all it needs, btw trying watching a movie in the shower, some stray hot water drops will register as touches as well even though no one is touching the screen. Keep stuff like this in mind before you outright call people liars.

there is a setting under display to keep screen turned off inside pocket, that should solve your problem.

I have s8 and no option its valid to stop s8 unlock alone inside the pocket ant turn on apps like calls, sms, camera, lantern, etc.Fingerprinting no need to unlock s8 in pocket, why? The big question. How he unlocks alone without fingerprints?????Someone knows?Ask samsung they know.

Accidental touch protection not working

Is anyone else having problems with the accidental touch protection not working? My S10+ keeps doing things while its in my pocket. It's unlocked from smart lock connected to my watch so I keep pulling my phone out to it being in a random app or it'll change song while in my pocket if i'm listening to music.
On my previous note 9 i'd get an alert if the top of the screen was covered saying to not cover the top of the screen
Same problem here. It happens randomly. The only way to prevent this from happening is to disable Double Tap to Wake Screen with Accidental Touch activated.
I have to disable DT2W because of this. The problem is caused by the lack of proximity sensor. Poor Samsung!
The curved screen makes typing in one hand very annoying.
Lot of accidental touches from the right of the screen.
Any solution for that when typing in one hand.
I tried reducing the keyboard size but it doesn’t look good looking.

Of there is no proximity sensor, how does your screen turn off as soon as you hold it to your head while on the phone?

If there is no proximity sensor, how does your screen turn off as soon as you hold it to your head while on the phone?
You sure this isn't caused by having "Lift to wake" enabled? Seems like that option can wake the device whether it's in a pocket or not. Seems like the proximity sensor works for me with DT2W, if I cover the top of the screen with my palm I can't wake it with a double tap, but I can if I pick the phone up while covering it.
Same here... very annoying

I don't know how it works during a call, but no one can prove the existence of a physical proximity sensor. You can see this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/s1...urned-test-t3909188/post79081873#post79081873.

Are you sure DT2W doesn't work when you cover the top of the screen? Make sure you don't touch the screen.
I find out the mechanism how Samsung prevents accidental touches, it totally depends on the touches on the screen, not the proximity like other phones. S10 detects the area, position and number of touches on the screen; if the touch area is large, or the touches are in different positions, or there are two or more simultaneous touch, it assumes that they're accidental touches like in a pocket.

That is correct. There is a proximity sensor but only works when in a call or listening to audio messages in certain apps.
Still, the touch screen mechanism is a very poor solution in terms of engineering since it just doesn't work well.
Unlikely to ever get a fix to this.

I thought they "fixed" it in the last OTA a few weeks ago? Mine has been a lot better since that OTA, but I still do get random wakes here and there that are still really annoying. I guess they still have work to do.
Am facing the same issue, it's very annoying. Did anyone get the solution for this?
