Nexus 7: improving Lollipop Performance - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, I unlocked and rooted my Nexus 7 2012, and flashed the factory image of Lollipop.
The performance is quite slow and laggy (as noted by several folks), I even tried a few suggestions like wiping Cache, etc.
I now have a fully working Nexus7 on Lollipop but not happy with the performance. So, I'm looking at a few options to improve the performance:
1. Overclock the Tegra 3 to around 1.6 - 1.8 GHz, and also look at other features to improve performance
2. I'm happy to convert the file system to F2FS as I'm reading that speeds up the system.
So, I've got a few questions on the above project:
1. To convert my system to F2FS I'm planning to go with the BSZAospLP v1.0 ROM as that supports F2FS. But I'm new to F2FS so some instructions around hot to get my Nexus converted to F2FS will help.
2. Which kernel should I go for? Faux / Phantom? I need a kernel that'll allow me to overclock and try out, to reach the best balance between Overclock and battery usage.

use twrp recovery to get to f2fs,
1.Go to wipe menu and then advanced wipe.
2.Select the data and go to repair/change file system. Then select F2fs.
3.Similarily do it for System and cache. (Note:- It will erase all your data)
4.Sideload BSZAospLP v1.1 ROM
5.Enjoy F2FS
and as far the kernel goes i prefer mkernel a72 to overclock. Phantom has no overclocking but it is also better for daily usage.
In f2fs there is no need to overclock your device for performance.

What I find helped was bumping up the Min CPU speed rather than over clocking. Think I changed it to 500Mhz or something like that. Nova launcher also helped as it is quite speedy in general.

Thanks .. for the detailed steps .. I'll give this a go today.
One question: Step 4: What does Sideload mean? I've always flashed ZIP via TWRP .. Is this something different?

No its the same as flashing via twrp but in sideloading you can flash it from the computer.
For sideloading,
1.Go to advanced menu in twrp and select adb sideload.
2. Connect your device to pc.
3.And type adb sideload filename.zip in cmd.
4.Enjoy sideloading

Hi, another question. I check the MKernel thread and the latest version seems to be a69.
Can you direct me at the version you've mentioned - a72?

You can find it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56924086&postcount=4668

Hi,
I'm trying to sideload but keep getting this error...
* failed to write data 'protocol fault (no status)' *
Any help?
Edit: Ok, After a few driver rejig, etc I think I've got it going and the sideload has successfully completed and the phone's not booted the first time.
How long did the first boot take? I remember reading somewhere that the first boot after the F2FS conversion takes ages?
Edit: Still on the 'Google' logo.. don't know if it's doing anything or just hung there..

Looks like I might have identified the issue.. The ROM I'm trying to Sideload is not F2FS compatible ..
I've done some more reading and have found the F2FS compatible version of the same ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56813573&postcount=491
Tonight I'll give this a go.. as I currently have a NEXUS 7 that has the /system, /data and /cache converted to F2FS, so has no ROM on it, so won't boot.

I turned on Develop Options then scrolled to the bottom and checked off "Kill all activities when you leave them" and I really don't have the lag anymore.

[Q] Is nexus 4 running paranoid android and franco kernel possible?

Hi, I have a newly rooted Nexus 4 with stock kernel and ROM but with TWRP recovery. I am kind of a noob when it comes to modifying my phone so any help is appreciated. I want to install paranoid android and franco kernel so that I will have good battery life and features, I wanted to know if this is possible and if so, how would I go about doing this. If there are video guides on youtube, please post links, I couldn't find anything when I searched for this

Just to add on another question, I was using franco kernel updater free and the latest version I can see in there is 164, I know that this will not work, so what should I do. also I was reading about the whole issue with jss and jwr, so just to make sure, franco r174 is compatible with pa 3.96, right?

Yes PA 3.96 is JWR based rom and official Farnco kernel r174 is a JWR kernel.. So you are good to go.
Flash it and relax. You can find the latest r174 in the OP's thread(original dev section)
Instructions for PA 3.69:
I'm on PA 3.69 (4.2.2 not 4.3) and using Franco nightly r165 which is the same as milestone 3.
Get goo manager from play store and click on "browse by compatible rom" then select paranoid android, then mako and flash 3.69, then download franco kernel updated free from play store and flash it.

I'm sorry to keep asking questions, but could you please post a step by step guide with links to the particular items that I will have to download (ie. radios and additional files (if needed) in addition to the rom, kernel, and gapps). Also seeing that Franco Kernel 176 has also been released for JWR, will that work with PA 3.96?
This is my first time installing a custom rom and kernel so please go into great detail if you can through all of the steps of the process.
Thanks for your help.

See this is what you have to do..
As you are on 4.3 and twrp installed download PA3.96(JWR based ROM so flash a JWR kernel) from original dev section,
Franco r176 kernel_JWR. Gapps latest in the same PA's thread updated one is 20130815.
Installation steps:
Factory reset
wipe cache
wipe dalvik cache
wipe system
wipe data
install the rom then gapps
AGAIN wipe cache and dalvik cache
flash Supersu v1.51(search for it-google)
flash the franco kernel
reboot.
enjoy the rom.:good:
Additional help(optional if you using TB.)
ROOT IS WORKING BUT IT NEEDS TO SORT OF BE ENABLED
1. Enable developer option by pressing build number 7 times in settings>about
2. Enable usb debugging and set root access to adb + apps in developer settings
3. root should now work
Titanium backup may not work on 4.3:
To fix it:
1. In tb go to menu>preferences>backup folder location
2. Press detect
3. Then you will get two options ...choose the one with legacy in its path
4. Then it will ask you to move backup to that folder.... Select that
5. Restart app and restore.

It might be your router issue.. pl check with the settings.. I had also read in the PA thread about the wifi issue so it better you can ask it over there, if you are lucky enough the exact person can help you who had the same problem .
Thanks, your description helped me to set up PA together with Franco Kernel.
Unfortunately, I have lost root access now.
I set the phone to developer's mode, but can't find any option to 'set root access to apps + data'.
I also tried to flash supersu, but after doing that, both TitaniumBackup and SuperSu report that there is no root access.
What can I do?
thanks, r.
FYI, I've solved the problem by myself using Nexus Root Toolkit.

When I'm in the temporary loaded CWM and trying to install the Kernel it seems fine. The operation takes seconds and finishes with DONE!
But after I reboot the OS looks untouched also when I go into Settings it says Android 2.36 ...
Any ideas?

its a kernel not a rom so nothing will look like its changed
make sure you mount system before you flash
look in about phone in settings - it will tell you what current kernel you are using
you can use apps like cpu spy which will give you kernel info and no frills cpu to change freq governor and i/o
and yes it will always say android 2.3.6 when flashing a kernel as you have not changed the android version
and there is only 2.3.6 gingerbread available for galaxy y (stock based) or 2.3.7 (cm7 based)
kernel 2.6.35.7

you dont unlock the bootloader like you do a htc phone
it has a file in the zip which does it each time you flash kernel
make sure you mount system in cwm before you flash the zip!

the problem was solved and had nothing to do with having a perminant cwm
also you dont need cm7 to have a perminant cwm as its kernel related - you just need a kernel that has it built in - for example hells fusion #50
also he was using duos not gt-5360

Unable to get F2FS to work on Grouper

I've got a Wifi 2012 Nexus 7 (GROUPER) that I've been playing around with. It is abysmally slow with stock on it, and I've been reading that an F2FS recovery, with an F2FS kernel and an F2FS ROM and F2FS GApps work pretty drokking well, so well that it's like having a new, factory fresh Nexus 7 and it's supposed to run a lot smoother to boot.
That may be hyperbole I've read, though. But between here, Reddit, Droid Life and other sources, I've read enough compelling evidence that doing this on my tablet would be in my best interests.
However I spent a good couple of hours last night trying to flash the M-Kernel with AllF2FS support as well as an AllF2FS ROM, after flashing the FixFilesystem zip, rebooting recovery (TWRP 2.7.0.0 F2FS) which was recommended, and then I flashed ROM THEN GApps THEN Kernel, which I've learned you want to do in that order because ROMs oftentimes have their own embedded kernel. The M-Kernel gives F2FS support, so I went with that.
Well, I tried everything and every order I could, but I cannot get either the ROM or the kernel to flash in TWRP, nor can I get any success with using the N7 Rootkit tool.
I've given it multiple attempts, even tried other kernels and other ROMs but I haven't had any success.
Are there any experts on this who can either pound out a step-by-step or point me in the direction of one that already exists? I searched the forums a bit but I didn't find anything usable that wasn't outdated by several months.
Thanks,

It should be pretty straightforward.
I would start by upgrading TWRP to the latest, as it has the fixfilesystem stuff built in, so you wont need to do that step.
Download a ROM that has AllF2FS support, and dont worry about the kernel for now, and grab it's associated gapps
reboot to recovery(I am running 2.8.2.0), and under wipe->advanced wipe, there is an option for repair or change filesystem. Highlight System, Cache and Data, and change to F2FS. Run a repair on all 3 after it finishes, just to be safe.
Now you'll need an OTG cable, or micro-USB adapter for a flash drive with your ROM & Gapps - install both like you would normally.
Reboot when finished, and you are done. Easy-Peasy. . . You can go back and flash your kernel if you want
Thanks for that!
I will give it a try later; The tutorials I read before suggested using the 2.7.0.0 F2FS version. I'll try the UTD version.

[Q] need help with 2012 Nexus 7

hello everyone,
i have a nexus 7 2012 tab i have had for almost 3 years now and ever sense the last version of jellybean or the first version of kitkat the tablet will eventually lag after a fresh install after 3 to 4 weeks. i have had my tab rooted for over a year now and have tried many versions of stock roms to cyanogen and slimroms and i even tried converting the filesystem to F2FS but it just seems every rom i try it will just get to a point where it lags so much its crippled. right now i am on slimbean 4.3 build 2.2 official 1776 with ext filesystem. i am just trying to get some feedback if anyone knows a rom that is nexus 7 2012 friendly before i reinstal again as i am about to try downgrading to a slimrom version of 4.1 which they say was the original version the tabbed shipped with
any input would be apprecialted
I use stock 5.1 + latest Franco kernel with /data and /cache formatted to F2FS. It works flawlessly for me. Very fast and responsive. No lags at all. For me, it is as fast as 4.4.4, if not faster.

how long have you been using it with that configuration? i ftried using F2FS with lego's kernel with a version of slimkat. it made my tablet speedy but after a month it just slowed back to a crawl
I'm not sure for how long exactly, but it's a long time. I'd say two or three months at least.
Correction: I'm using it since Android 5.1 is out, I don't know when that happened.
cool man would you be able to link to me the directions you used to install F2FS with from your post i'm not sure how to install F2FS with stock. android. i do want to use 5.1 though
I don't remember where I got the instructions so I can't link it. I think I went like this:
1) download the official factory image from google (https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/nakasi-lmy47d-factory-ee97ce42.tgz)
2) extract it
3) flash it using the flash-all script
4) let the tablet boot android 5.1, skip the wifi and google account setup
5) reboot to bootloader/fastboot
6) download latest TWRP recovery ( http://dl.twrp.me/grouper/twrp-2.8.6.0-grouper.img)
7) flash it using adb: "fastboot flash recovery twrp-2.8.6.0-grouper.img"
8) using the volume and power button boot to recovery
9) wipe -> advanced wipe > select cache -> repair or change file system --> change file system --> f2fs
10) wipe -> advanced wipe > select data -> repair or change file system --> change file system --> f2fs
11) in TWRP select reboot --> bootloader
12) download Franco kernel(http://kernels.franco-lnx.net/Nexus7/5.1/boot-r82.img)
13) flash franco kernel using adb command "fastboot flash boot boot-r82.img"
13) If it doesn't work that way, download the kernel in zip format(http://kernels.franco-lnx.net/Nexus7/5.1/zips/franco.Kernel-nightly-r82.zip)
and flash it using recovery's sideload(advanced-->adb sideload) --> to sideload type this adb command: "adb sideoload franco.Kernel-nightly-r82.zip"
14) After you've flashed kernel, normally reboot the system and everything should be fine.
If anything is unclear, please feel free to ask. I repeat, I don't exactly remember how I did it, but I think it goes the way I wrote now.
Note: Everything you do, you do on your own risk.
Good luck!
thanks for posting the instructions i will give it a try

1) DOWNLOAD
- djibe Galaxy S5 mini G800F pack v3: http://bit.ly/G800Fdjibepackv3
(contains Samsung tweaked Odin 3.13.1 + Samsung USB drivers + TWRP 3.6.0_9-0 official recovery + Magisk 23). Unzip files.
+ ROM Unofficial Lineage OS 16: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5-mini/development/rom-lineageos-16-0-t3868612
Download latest build here: https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=64356&sort_by=date&sort_dir=DESC
### ROM perfectly working except Encryption, Video recording doesn't work in all apps or with all camera applications
+ OpenGApps ARM 9 pico : http://opengapps.org/?arch=arm&api=9&variant=pico
+ a microSD card. Copy ROM, Gapps and Magisk on microSD card (FAT32 format) and insert it in phone.
+ Charge phone to 100 %
2) BACKUP DATA
Install Samsung drivers (you unzipped earlier).
Then plug phone to PC in File transfer mode.
Collect all .jpg or .mp4
Use an app like Backupyourmobile to backup texts, contacts, etc.
Check that backup is located on microSD card.
Then copy the backup on your PC.
Erase your Google Account: Go to Settings > Account > Google and erase it.
3) FLASH TWRP 3.6 RECOVERY
Shut down phone.
Boot in Download Mode : hold Home + Power + Volume- for 3 seconds and release.
Confirm with Volume+.
Phone now displays: Downloading, do not turn off target.
Connect phone in USB, wait for bootloader drivers installation.
Then launch Odin.exe (included in my archive) and wait for Odin indicator ID:COM to become blue.
In options: Verify re-partition and Auto Reboot are NOT ticked while F. Reset Time is ticked.
In AP > select twrp-3.6.0_9-0-kminilte.img.tar
### Warranty will be Void after next click ###
Click Start.
When PASS! success green message appears.
Wait a few seconds, then hold again Home + Power + Volume- to reboot phone.
Let phone restart then shut it down.
4) BACKUP IMEI PARTITION
Boot in Recovery Mode: Hold Home + Power + Volume+ until you see the Samsung logo then release and wait a few seconds for TWRP recovery to boot.
If it asks for Keep System Read Only ? > Swipe to Allow Modifications.
Go to Backup > you can select the partitions you want to save.
Select all partitions in order to be able to restore phone to it's original state.
Select at least EFS partition to backup your IMEI. If a flash fails and partition is damaged you will still be able to restore this partition and use the phone.
If IMEI is lost during a flash, phone won't be able to reach cellphone networks.
I prefer to backup EFS, Boot and System.
Now type Select Storage > Select Micro SD card and confirm with OK
Now Swipe to Backup and wait during process.
Go to Home screen and continue with next chapter.
Connect phone or microSD to PC.
Open microSD folder and backup TWRP folder to a safe place.
Youe /efs partition is now safe (+/- other partitions if you need to fix some crashes).
5) WIPE PARTITIONS
Go to Wipe > Format Data
Type yes and confirm with bottom right Check icon.
Then go to Wipe > Advanced wipe,
select Dalvik, Cache, System, Data, Internal Storage (if you really made a backup from step 2), then Swipe to Wipe,
then back.
Go back to TWRP Home screen > Reboot > Recovery and Swipe to confirm.
At reboot, if TWRP asks for Keep System Read Only ? > Swipe to Allow Modifications.
6) FLASH ROM, GAPPS AND MAGISK
Back to TWRP Home menu. Then tap on Install > choose LOS16*.zip,
(if you don't see the files, tap on Select Storage and make sure Micro SDCard is active).
then Add more Zips > open_gapps*.zip,
then Swipe to confirm Flash.
Wait for operation to end.
### OPTIONAL FOR ROOT
Go to Reboot > Recovery.
Once phone rebooted, go to Install > Magisk.
Then tap Wipe cache/dalvik, swipe to confirm,
then Reboot System.
Wait for the phone to boot during 10 minutes.
7) ROOT ACCESS
No extra steps for root. Magisk starts with Android.
Open Magisk Manager app to manage root permissions.
8) DON'T USE BUILT-IN CAMERA APP
Using LineageOS default camera app will crash when switching from photos to videos.
Use Simple Camera app included (or Google Camera, Footej camera).
9) EXTRA
You can use GPS Status & Toolbox app for faster GPS fix.
For faster phone, go to Settings > About.
Tap 7 times on Build number.
Go to Settings > System > Avdanced > Developer options.
Set Windows animation scale, Transition animation scale and Animator duration scale to 0.5x.
For better battery longevity, set Dark mode. Settings > Display > Avanced > Style > Style > Dark
And Dark mode > Dark.
Enjoy,
djibe

Update: Thanks to C0rn3j in the TWRP thread I got it to work with heimdall and pulling the battery.
Great guide, worked well for me except rebooting to TWRP recovery failed with the kernel length error. Tried using the previous version of TWRP and then with the stock kernel but both failed with the same error. Does TWRP work with LOS14.1 on kminilte?
Nice guide! I have been using custom roms on my mini for about a year and never knew mutch about that I can change the filesystem.
However sometimes my phone becomes very laggy, and unresponsive.(Maybe memory settings problems) I tried several kernel settings but did not find the best yet.
What is Your opinion? What are the best kernel settings to our model?

Hi, try not to overclock too much, like 1600 Mhz, cause overheating can slow down phone.
What other parameters did you try ?

Hi. Yes LOS 14.1 and TWRP 3.1 both work very well on my dad's G800F.
You can't boot in TWRP ?
What kernel do you use ?

Latest version of tutorial is available to obtain GOOGLE MOBILE SERVICES (GMS) CERTIFICATION
+ updated TWRP recovery
+ updated Kernel
Do you think LOS is stable enough to propose it in my tutorial ?
Thank you for the guide! It worked really well. There were a number of details I didn't know, like the performance difference between filesystem formats, and everything was very step-by-step and super helpful.
One issue: TWRP 3.2.1 doesn't work with the 6.0 Spookcity kernel. You have to disable the device check to get it to work. Looks like Panzerknakker uploaded one with that change: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77725358&postcount=285

Are you talking about LOS 15? If so, no IMO. It was stable but buggy. I'm actually downgrading back from 15.1 to 14 due to issues with internal storage and battery consumption, and sometimes it would stop charging and require a hard restart..

Hi, thank you very much for your help.
I'll fix the Kernel thing and stick to LOS 14.
Thanks,

v4. Updated pack with TWRP Recovery 3.2.3-0 and Spookcity kernel 6.0-1
Update: I'm having some major issues with lag on my device. 15 seconds to open Chrome, occasional overheating, high CPU usage on small things, etc.
I've had LOS14.1 (a slightly older version) on this device before, minus the different filesystem format and the Spookcity kernel, and not experienced this issue. So I'm thinking about rolling back some of the changes to see which ones were the cause.
Is there an unmodified version of the kernel out there?

Hi,
I didn't experience that but we never know.
To have a fresh system, reboot to TWRP recovery. Wipe cache + system.
Flash LOS, addonsu, OpenGApps.
Wipe cache and reboot.
Thank you for posting this guide. Much appreciated.
Was thinking of getting a Galaxy S i9000 ready for moms but didn't quite understand all the dated guides/roms so decided to buy a 2nd hand s5 mini which now works like a charm!
(struggled a bit with the power off/power on after twrp flash but removing battery for shutdown and holding home+power+vol+ a little longer works!)

Hi, you are very welcome for this tuto.
I like when phones don't go to the rubbish !
You are quite right, Galaxy S2 i9100 can be tricky when USB is badly recognized by the PC. And to be honest its performances are low.
Hope you had a merry christmas,
cheers
