[Q] SDCard Formatting - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All!
I have, admittedly limited Android experience and that experience was on a rooted device. With that device, I had the SDCard partitioned with a swap and data areas.
My Note 4 is NOT Rooted. With a stock Note 4 is there any need or benefit to partitioning an SDCard? Are the partitions only used by a 'Rooted' device? Does one just format the SDCard using the device which I believe will default to FAT32? What about the FAT32 file size limitation? Should it be formatted to NTFS?
I've searched quite extensively and could only find information on formatting and partitioning for Rooted devices with custom ROMs. There seems to be very little info for stock devices and that info is usually, "Put the card in the phone, format, done.".
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Partitioning not useful unless you planning to use link2sd like application.
Use win7 machine to format SD card in exfat which can handle big size.

Thank you for the reply.
To clarify, apps like Link2SD require the phone to be 'Rooted' so there is no benefit to partitioning if not 'Rooted'? As well, then there is likely no point or benefit to a swap partition either?

[Q] Best format/partition settings?

I just bought an 8gb Class 6 SD card for my Aria. I'm running Cyanogen 6.1.1... so what steps should I take to get the best performance possible on my Aria?
Larger allocation size will waste more space but its also supposed to make fetching things off the sd card faster as files aren't broken up into a bunch of tiny fragments. That's pretty much the only setting you need to know

I thought I was supposed to partition the card in a special way to take advantage of ext2/ext3/ext4, etc. Can't I move the dalvik cache to the SD card and is it beneficial to create a swap file on it?

if you use rom manager it will partition ext3/ext4 for you.

[Q] what's sd-ext?

i looked around the forums a bit but the search returns too many results not related to what i'm looking for...
So not really sure what this sd-ext is. I've read that it's for apps that are moved to the SD card... But the thing is i'm running CM7 and i've moved apps using Apps2SD as well as directly from within GB itself without ever creating an SD-ext partition.
So whats the purpose of this? Should i create the partition? And does it make a soft link to a directory on my SD card since it seems /sd-ext is in the root folder. If so, if i change my SD card later and transfer all the files over to it, will it break the link?
Your SD card has a fat32 format, which is mostly typical for usb storage devices, computers, etc.
Android runs natively in an ext format environment.
The stock Apps2SD uses the fat32 portion of your SD card, which has limitations, because it isn't Androids native environment. If you format your card so you have an ext partition, you can trick the phone into thinking it's part of it's native environment...
A good example can be seen with widgets, which won't work if you move them to SD, but will work on an ext partition. Other uses include being able to move cache and dalvik...

Thanks for the explanation. What happens to all the apps already moved to my sd card now? How do I get them over to sd ext partition?
And right now I only hasn't an eight gb card which I plan to upgrade in the future. Will I be okay just transferring everything over to the new card at that time?

You will need to be rooted...
You first set up the ext partition. Doing this will format your card, and erase everything. You will then need a script to run the a2ext. Darktremor is the popular one for the Nexus, but I'm not sure about the MT4G...
Once you have an a2ext script, then you just move your apps to internal, since the phone thinks the ext is internal memory.
Titanium backup can help backing up your apps, and also with moving them to internal in a batch...
Read up, because I know little about the mt4g specifics. I've ordered one, but until it arrives, I'm just reading...

Thanks. Yup I am rooted and running CM7.
seems to be a bit of a pain to format my sd card..

I must admit, I wouldn't think you would need to?
The mt4g has more rom and ram than my Nexus, so I wouldn't have thought that you would run out of space quickly... Or am I wrong, and space is an issue?

No you're right actually. It's not really an issue but not sure why I think I should move the apps to the sd.. Haha

[Q] HELP with Swap Partition

hi guys i have been searching the forums for tutorial on how to properly partition your sd card and your phone to use a swap partition for swapper. i heard it allows speed up performance for the phone while using some apps. can anyone pls help me with this. i just want a better performing GT540. thanks in advance
I'd be interested in a tutorial for this as well.
Thanks
Most opperating systems have a built in manager for it, including windows. Look on YouTube, that's how I did mine.
Or use clockworkmod.

On windows you can create partitions but swap belongs to linux so unless you use a ubuntu live CD or a machine with ubuntu...

A ext2 partitions is the same on all operating system
Clockworkmod will also partition you sdcard
So i just create an ext2 partition on my sd? Then what's next?

Back ur memory card up first. Depending what size memory card you have depends on the size of the partition
The most you will need is 2gb, I would only us 500mb.(2gb sdcard)
You need to have a fat32 partition for your normal data and the ext2 for the swap file. Then just put it back in you phone.
BTW I lost my last memory card trying to unpartition it. So if you only want 1 extra paelrtition use clockworkmod.

after this, how can i configure swapper 2??
Thanks in advance
I think you tick a box. Download swapper2 from the market place, one of them has more options than the other

[Q] Noob question about Multi-Rom on Nexus 7

One little question about the Tool "Multirom":
My internal storage is nearly full because of many Gameloft Games like Nova with big .obb files. After installing a custom Rom on a external storage like a 64gb usb stick, do the Apps/Games of the 2nd Rom will be stored on the external device or on the Nexus 7 internal storage?
Unfortunately tools like "Directory Bind" don't work for me because of Android 4.21...
I think they will store in external storage.

Sadegh is right. They stay on the external.

Little problem after installation: Multirom doesn't see the rom (paranoid android) on my USB drive.Always the message "No Roms in this location".USB is formatted in NTFS and the paranoid.zip is in the root directory

Well Fat32 is much better, now i can boot many roms but I cant install the paranoid-android rom.Always the same error:
create system.img
create data..
create cache
...
...
unable to open paranoid.zip
Whats wrong?
Maybe a kernel problem because I selected "use the same kernel for both roms"?
Ok I found the problem. In my opinion MultiROM is not fully compatible with NTFS...None of my roms work on NTFS.Always stuck on create data.img...
FAT32 works but the 4gb cap is a little bit annoying.Any idea?
The thread says NTFS is compatible... so it should be. You could also try making it extX.
Well ext3 is compatible too but I cant write anything on my USB Stick with this partition format...I use "Ext2fsd" but I cant mount the partition as read & write...only as read only.
I think NTFS is the best for me but I cant get it working ...Can I move the rom which I created under Ext3 to the NTFS partition?
Maybe exFat?
Have you checked the paranoid zip isn't corrupted? (md5 check or redownload)
I've not tried usb storage but paranoid is certainly working for me in multirom on internal storage

[Q] Android NooB question: Cannot get a SD card mounted...

Hi experts here,
Sorry to bother you but I could not find clear explications on how to do it right:
I have formatted my 16GB SD card to have 13GB Fat 32, 1,5 GB Ext2 and 0,5 GB linux swap.
Then I have copied the current AmeriCan Android to to the Fat32 partition and fired HaRet.
Android boots fine, but has got no SD card mounted and the menu to mout it is greyed out.
a) how to mount the Fat32 Partition of the SD card?
b) did Android install on the ext2 partition? If not, what is the procedure to get it there?
Thank you.
RIN67630
As far as I know, sd-build android's data/storage is in a file called data.img located on your sdcard. I am not sure if it's supposed to show that you actually have an sdcard.
a) I am not sure, so I can't say anything.
b) Find a rom you want (because you can't convert your current ROM to an ext one, you can make a backup though) from the nand section. If by (boot from ext) you mean NativeSD, you don't need MAGLDR/cLK. Just look for the "NativeSD for Windows Mobile Users" guide, and follow it. But if by that you mean (have your storage on the ext) then you must install cLK/MAGLDR, install a recovery, repartition your system accordingly and then flash the rom from the recovery install earlier.
If what I said made no sense to you or you think it's too complicated, use the search.

May I try to reformulate my questions?
- Can Nandroid mount (read-write) the SD FAT32 Partition which contains the filesystem image from which it has booted?
- If yes, how?
- If no, would nativeSD be the solution to share (read-write) the FAT 32 data between Android and WinMo?
Thank you for the advice.
Hi, I think we are in the same boat, I am running an SD version Android ICS from my SD card and it says that no SD card is mounted. I would like to know how I can transfer music and side load apps I already downloaded. It would be great help if someone could help

Finally, I found it out: My SD card was partitioned. I made an extra second EXT2 partition for Android, which was a bad idea.
It turns out that Android cannot recognize partitioned SD cards or they need a separate mounting procedure, don't know exactly...
Since I have deleted the extra partition Android can read/write on the full SD card...
