Apps to disable for "pure" Android experience - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo General

Added more to the list, that is a huge amount of bloat removed and seems to be running fine without it! Definitely seems much more stock Android as well.

Good thread but quick question pls. I see many of you are disabling the hot spot. One of the top things i use is the a hot spot for my daughters homework while in the car and such. Is there a secondary hot spot youre using?
Thx

Not that I know of, but if you need it, just don't disable it
The idea here is to get to stock Android, then perhaps enable the things you needed from Verizon.

I'm a little shocked anyone would disabled the moto features. I guess this thread is about the most stock experience. But if the moto apps were on the market, & I was rocking a nexus. I would still have it downloaded lol

Yeah I may still re-enable some of those.
Also disabled the Camera app and installed the Google Camera. No reason to have two

I have disabled most of these apps. Now I can not answer my phone when it rings. The phone rings, but no animation comes up to let me swipe or any way to choose to answer it. What have I disabled/changed that would cause this? Every thing else seems to work fine.

Post your list and maybe we can figure it out. My guess is maybe you only disabled some of the Motorola specific ones? I have the full list as advertised in the first post and have no prob answering from a screen off.

Sorry, I was unable to post them. I did go into settings and enabled every one that I had disabled with my wife periodically calling me. I also randomly turned the phone off and on a few times. Still nothing. The phone rings, but the answering icon does not appear and I can not answer. Is there another way to answer the phone? Could I have turned something off that would affect this or maybe download an app?

I just went into recovery and wiped the cache partition, reboot. This did not fix the problem. Don't know what else to try? I'm thinking it is something simple. I will take it into Version tomorrow.

That's really strange. Maybe it wasn't related to the disabling?

Possibly. I've been trying to remember what I may have done. I received a call yesterday morning just fine. Yesterday afternoon, I received a call and could not answer it because I do not get the answer phone icon. Most of the time in between those two calls, I was driving and not messing with the phone. ?

Wow. That's a lot. Update on my problem. I took the phone into Verizon this morning. The lady that helped thinks I probably uninstalled something to cause this.
What she did to fix the the problem was to do a complete default wipe.
That seems to have resolved it.
It was working properly when I left the store. In now I'm the process of restoring all my apps. That takes a little while.
Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk

Glad you were able to get it working.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using XDA Free mobile app

That's strange, because you can't really uninstall anything, only disable.
itanas, wow that's a big list. I think some are stock Android apps, so that's cool that you can disable them, but I don't know that it gets us the pure Android.
I'll note for anyone reading that I re-enabled the Moto, Moto Activity, and Moto Display apps so I could have the notifications back (since this phone has no notification LED w/the stock software).
Also updated the first post with Camera.

Has any one tired this yet?

I've been into recovery, but just wiped the cache partitions.

List of things that can be frozen / uninstalled

I know alot of phone sections have a list of these, being we dont have ROM's readily available to us yet, it would probably be a good idea to compile a list of things that can safely be frozen / uninstalled from titanium backup, not just including the regular bloat, i have just started messing around with mine, so if anyone would like to share i will add them to a list in the OP.

circles is disabled but always shows in my running apps? Any idea why, I know there is a weather service associated with it but idk if disabling that would disable weather all together
already covered
Existing thread on this already, for circles to not show up just uninstall it and its associated config extension

Official KitKat Bloatware Removal Thread

Hi All,
Now that most people have installed the OTA KitKat and knowing that this will be the last update Motorola makes for our phones, I thought it would be a good idea to make a collection of all the system bloatware that came with the OTA that is able to be removed safely without affecting the performance or running of the phone (either frozen or deleted for those of us lucky enough to be unlocked and already rooted). Lord knows I have been waiting a long long time to delete these apps and not just have them frozen! I'll keep a running list in the second post, hopefully in alphabetical order, as people post up any that I have forgotten about or didn't think of.
Again, this is just a list of everything that is safe to remove if people don't use the apps / functions, not necessarily things that have to be removed.
...there's nothing like freeing up memory and RAM 8)
EDIT: The hard ones to pick out are gonna be all the "com.***" ones since they're not quite as self-explanatory...

Like I said, they are removable but some people will want to keep them. Personally I keep the YouTube, but use a scientific calculator app and don't use live wallpaper.
Ah I see, I didn't think those were removable. I thought they were system apps.
You're right, they are system apps, but can be frozen and for those of us lucky enough to be unlocked and rooted on KK they can be deleted (using TiBu or some other method). Everything listed above is considered a "system app". But, the list is not comprehensive.
That's why I was looking for input for some of the more not-as-obviously-named removable apps. I know there was a list floating around somewhere, I had a bunch of stuff frozen from that list whilst on JB. But now that our phones are not going to be updated any further (and if there is a surprise update that comes to us, we can put the phones back to "stock" using SamuriHL's RSD Lite scripts), I'd like to delete them permanently.
Just an update - I was able to safely remove the all-important NFL Mobile app without hardbricking
Guys, I'm sorry to crash this thread, I'm locked and on 9.18.64. Since your all rooted and unlocked, I was wondering if anyone of you would be willing to give SamuriHl a freshly installed and rooted system dump using the safestrap method he outlines in the KitKat root tracking thread? I'd like to be a guinea pig for this one chance root experiment. That's the only missing piece ATM.

Would love to help @MarcusWhite but I do not have SS installed. I also am a pretty big noob about these things, I can'do much past rooting/unlocking/custom ROMs.
Also I found another bloatware - HP Printer Service or whatever it's called.

Updated the list with some others that I found as well (Email, Hangouts, Messaging, Music Visualization Wallpapers, etc.) All can be safely removed, but make sure you have another method for emailing or texting, lol
Freeze bloatware
K, I was able to freeze the bloatware using my unrooted 4.4.2.
I went into each apps settings (long press the icon, app info). Then I cleared the "Show notifications" check, Force stop, then Disable. After that the offending apps weren't showing up under the app screen.
If you go to Play store, you'll find them listed as "Disabled".
Hope this helps some, and keep up the good fight for Root access with this update.

Sigh... Please don't spam this thread with posts about root on stock KK. If you don't have it by now, get used to not having it on this phone EVER.
I have removed and disabled the google search app without any negative issues to the rom.
I don't use it as I find myself using my personal browser more than the useless google app. Plus no google now push. However, it does remove the search bar, but doesn't break the roms ability to search from an up swipe from the dock using a browser with search functions, or another search app.
You can also freeze google maps along with its companion app without issue.
You should also consider putting a list of apps not to mess with this time around. This is because a few system apps have become more vital in the rom.
For instance, Google Play Services was able to be disabled and removed without reinstalling automatically in Jelly Bean, but it can no longer be frozen or deleted as it will seriously mess up the google play store with it's recent update in kitkat.

The "do not touch" app list sounds like a good idea, but I was thinking of just leaving it as whatever isn't listed in post #2 shouldn't be touched

Haha. How do you like your crow prepared? Despite the fact that root and unlock is now available again for a short time, anyway, I think he was showing how there is some freeze ability without root with this update.
With that said, I can't find acoustic warning in tibu, is it now called something else? I can't stand the auto volume drop when I hook to my truck radio.
Update: nvm. Its no longer standalone. Its in android os. You have to use xposed to disable it.
Something I killed in this list removed my speech to text capability. The microphone icon is gone from the keyboard when texting. Any idea what did it?

If I had to guess, I'd say it was removing Google search that did the trick. That's when mine disappeared anyway. I rarely use the option so it didn't bother me too much. If you haven't uninstalled Google search, then you should just be able to verify Google voice typing is enabled. If that doesn't do it, you might also have to long press the button to the left of the space bar and assign the mic to that key.

OK, I'll bite. It seems I'm only able to freeze bloatware. I try uninstalling w/ TBU, but they're all still there. Since I don't see any reason to have to restore them for an OTA, I'd just like to get rid of them.

[Q] GPSD?

Hi guys,
I just got my Note 4 few days ago and everything fine, but lately I'm noticing that the device is getting warm and battery life is not as good as I thought when I read battery is 3200 mAh. Looking at the processes I notice something called GPSD consuming even more than OS and screen.
This is the list of apps that I have installed on my phone:
Phone
Contacts
Messages
Internet
Gallery
Camera
Music
Video
Clock
S Planner
S Note
Scrapbook
Email
Calculator
Settings
Voice Recorder
My files
Galaxy Apps
S Voice
Evernote

Gmail

Youtube
Google
Voice Search
Play Store
Google Settings
Swiftkey
PlayerPro
Swarm
Aldiko
Spotify
Elevate
Tagstagram Pro
Word Lens
WPS Office
Outlook
Amazon
Banesco (online banking)
BG (online banking)
Repost for instagram
Metrobus (related to the public transportation in my country)
Photo Grid
Dropbox
QQPlayer
Shazam
Foursquare
Instagram
Whatsapp+
ES File Explorer
Samsung Gear
And the rest of the garbage apps that came with the rom such as Claro Juegos, Claro Music, 3DTourViewer, Calendar Storage, Facebook, Flipboard, Google Play Books, Google Play Games, Google Play Music, Google Play Newsstand, Hangout, Live weather, Maps, PEN.UP, Portal Claroideas, S Healt, Street View, Talkback, Unified Daemon are already turned off.
Does anyone see an app that might be causing the problem? BTW, I'm from Panamá and my carrier is Claro Panamá, so you see a lot of Claro garbages apps preinstalled.
My phone is not rooted (because of warranty stuffs, etc). Please if someone has had this issue before and know how to solve it I'd appreciate it. I've done pretty mucho all I can (factory reset, flash rom via odin)...
Anyone, please?

Google Assistant

Has anyone received the Google Assistant update yet? It was suppose to role out yesterday. Just wondering since the default for this phone is Moto assistant if we will get it or not.
Love the Nougat update

I installed the "Play Services Info" app by weberdo and used it to download Google Play Services version 10.2.99 (440-148249840) from APK Mirror. After a couple of reboots and disabling Moto Voice, Google Assistant became active. I had to touch the microphone icon, and after a couple of tries, it went into "configure" mode and learned my voice. Now working fine.

Interestingly, for me, even while running on play services 10.2.98, I had all the assistant settings in the google app, and even paired it with my smartthings account, but alas, voice search is still going to the old style search. Updated to 10.2.99 and still seeing the same behavior. I didn't even know we were getting assistant, and was quite excited when I saw the settings, so when it didn't work, of course I got unreasonably upset. oh well

Alright, I let it sit for a couple hours, and it's working now. Though, still can't launch it from the microphone button in the google app or the google search bars on the home screens. That still launches the old voice search. Have to long touch the home button or use the "ok google" launch phrase. It's a shame it can't use the always-on mic from moto voice though.
I'm seeing some similar things. Google Assistant came down to my phone automatically. Set up the OK Google voice command. Seems to work fine when launching from the mic button on the assistant, but will not respond to always on mic when the phone is idle.
You do have to disable Moto Voice, or change the voice phrase to something other than OK Google. Phone still responds to Moto Voice command on idle, but not OK Google.
Yea, so unless there's a software update for Moto Voice, we're likely not going to get the always-on mic to work with assistant. There's a dedicated processor on the SoC that handles the always-on mic, and it's tied directly to Moto Voice. Moto voice really doesn't do a whole lot other than listen for the launch phrase. Everything after that point is basically handed off to Google Voice search. It really should be quite a easy fix (pass the requests onto assistant instead of voice search), but I doubt that will happen.

I got it too. However, while it unlocks the phone when locked and the screen being on, it will not wake the phone when saying ok google. You hear the sound prompt that it heard you, but nothing ever follows up and the screen stays black

No notifications from apps installed from the Play Store (Fire HD 8 7th Gen)

I bought a Fire HD 8 to put on my wall and see who's at my door using the Ring app. To do so, I installed the Play Store on it, installed the Ring app, and that works. The issue I have with the app is that I don't get any notifications from it. I already looked at all notifications settings and the notifications aren't blocked for the app. I then tried to install IFTTT on the tablet, and created a rule to send notifications whenever something happen from Ring. It works on my other devices, but again nothing on this device. I then tried to install Facebook Messenger from the Play Store, and same thing no notifications. If I install it from the Amazon store it works.
Anyone else saw a similar issue?
Thanks!
I'm seeing the same thing on my 8th gen HD 8; no notifications. I've tried Ring and Hangouts, neither work on the HD 8 2018, but work fine on my HD 10. Has anyone figured this out?
Edit:. To be a bit more specific it seems only apps which get pushed a realtime notification to them like Ring does when it senses motion don't work. But apps that are pulling data like Gmail or my Nine email client, these notifications are working just fine.
I'm getting the same issue, anyone had any luck getting this to work?
Same issue for me too... Fire HD 10
I am receiving notifications on one fire 8 hd but on fire 7, I I don't. Both running same os.
Ring notifications are not compatible with HD fire tab
I've been working with Ring and this is their reply,
"Thank you for your follow up. At this time, I have investigated further on your behalf for this issue and found that your Amazon HD 8 Tablet is not compatible with all of our features. Our application is designed to operate on Android and iOS (iPhones). Many tablets are built with Android operating systems. However, your tablet being the Amazon Fire HD 8, it is designed and operates on FireOS made by Amazon.
This software is not completely compatible with our Ring app. Because we do not design our app for that platform, some of our features simply do not connect with the operating system. In this case, FireOS does not allow the Ring app to produce notifications to the main screen. We do apologize, this device will not function like iPhones and standard Android based tablets.
At this moment, I am sorry to advise, but notifications to the Amazon Fire HD 8 Tablet, or any other Amazon tablet, will not be completely compatible as they operate on FireOS.
If you have any other questions or concerns, please let me know so I may assist you further.
Thank you for your time and for being one of our neighbors here at Ring! "
Just a quick update on what I found out. If I install Facebook Messenger from the Amazon store, then I do get notifications. As soon as it gets updated by the Google Play store, I stop receiving them. I'm not sure if it's really related or just having bad luck but I am curious to know if others that saw the same issue with Ring also have this behavior.

Not surprised as the different builds likely leverage native frameworks to assist with notifications. The four components used to secure basic Play Store functionality does constitute a full Google Play Services config.

Probably not as many apps (at least the varients installed from the Play Store) utilize Google Play Services for notifications. The GPS framework needs to be flashed which is all but impossible on a bootloader locked, unrooted device.

I just realized I have this issue too, with no notifications from Hangouts, and sporadic notifications from Telegram X, until I open the actual app, and I am flooded with notifications. I have a suspicion that it has something to do with GCM/FCM (Firebase Cloud Messaging) and something about Fire OS not letting apps sit in the background to allow for push notifications. I read this article here that says that certain OEMs don't let apps run in the background and that muddles with the notifications. Can anyone get anywhere with this? I will try whitelisting apps in the hidden Battery Optimization menu that you have to launch with Activity Launcher by opening the Battery menu and then launching the Battery Optimization menu from that.

Hi, any update on how this worked for you? You mentioned you were going to try disabling battery optimization.
I have same issue. no notifications with app installed through Google Play Store.
Fire Tablet HD8 gen10
When I check the notifications, Fireos indicated the app has never issued any notifications.
Anyone found a solution?
My fire hd 10 (2021) does receive email and generates email notifications when screen is off. It will not receive google voice notifications though.
Can you configure ring to email a particular email address (probably different from your regular one) which is then checked on the tablet using push (imap). This doesn't fix the problem but does is a suitable work around. Use a distinct sound so you know it's something from ring.
To find a suspected issues on your Fire tablet by executing adb shell logcat
any fix to this yet? it's bumming me out since i bought a fire tablet specifically for gmail, discord, and other apps that needed notifs. and majority of those apps aren't even on the amazon app store.
Same here
Its hilarious that this works without problems on my Fire HD 10 2017. But its soooo slow, thats why i got a HD 10 2021 now. Just to see that gmail notifications are not working anymore. I wonder if it would work if i manually install the older gmail app version and google required apps from the 2017 instead using the latest ones for the 2021.
Google Calendar and Business Calendar Pro Notifications still work. But the Problem is Gmail.
