[Guide] How to remove " What's New" without rooting - Xperia Z3 General

1. Unzip the file and start ''runthis.bat'
2. Enter the following order one by one:
adb shell
pm block com.sonymobile.advancedwidget.entrance
exit
adb reboot
Note: Connect the phone to computer using ' USB Debugged mode', which can be set in Developer Options.

Or just update it to the last version.

Can you be more specific? Update what?
I already update "what's new" to the latest version, but there is no option to hide it.
Thank you.

An update is rolling out which automatically removes the shortcut. Lemme try to get the apk....
Edit: apk here
http://www.mediafire.com/?pj09r3q27h9xvvv

I've done the adb method on my Z3v, and it worked. Problem was is that it messed up Xperia Home and a lot of other functions on the UI so I had to undo it. With this new update though, thanks a lot!

Just a word of warning: if you use the built-in alarm clock, don't remove organizer.

No what's new junk after the recent update.

After getting the update by sony update center the whats new is gone from my.home button, when you hold the home button. Is there any way to remove the google icon as well?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2902419
And go to page 6 to see which things else can be blocked

Still no update for me
Hi all,
It's now mid-Jan and I've not had any update for my UK D6603 that removes the What's New button... are you all US based or on a certain device type?

Here's what I blocked (I have the tmobile version, hence the carrieriq)
com.carrieriq.tmobile.IQToggle
com.carrieriq.tmobile.IQOOB
com.carrieriq.tmobile
com.sonymobile.mx.android

[TOOL] Backup TA for Mac OS X [v1.4][2015-05-13]

Backup TA for Sony Xperia™ (Mac OS X version)
With this app you can backup and restore the TA partition of your device.
This can be useful, for example, when you want to unlock your bootloader and not lose your DRM keys and most importantly, your warranty. Before unlocking your bootloader, backup your TA with this app and you will be able to restore it to a factory state (locked bootloader, DRM keys intact, etc).
The app is based on TA Backup v9.10 by DevShaft (thanks !), which can be found here.

I have granted SU permission to shell, so it won't prompt anyway.
The app is then not responding and I have to force close it.

Yeah, the app will appear to hang but it actually waits for adb to work it's magic.
Is there any chance you could send me a copy of the system log ?
To do so, open the Console app, enter "Backup TA" in the search field in the top right corner (to filter the logs) and make sure that "All Messages" is selected in the Log list (sidebar) on the left side of the window. At this point there should be lots of messages from Backup TA shown. You can now go to File -> Save a copy as... and send that file to me so I can look at what went wrong.
Thanks :fingers-crossed: !

So I think it is just a case that I'm too hurry to check the app and closed it earlier than I should while it is working.

Try selecting system.log in the sidebar and then search for Backup TA, it should work.
Anyway, I'll implement a better way to get logs from the app soon

Checking the timestamp, maybe you should add a message to ask the user to wait for at least a minute to prevent nervous users like me from closing it too early.
Sorry for being new to this TA thing, I don't know how long I should expect.

Thanks, mate. I think it worked. Just one question: is it normal that a 2MB TA partition gets zipped into few KB? Something like 77KB. Are those sizes (for both TA partition and zip file) normal?

Message preview in notification/status bar missing after Marshmallow update

I no longer get previews of my text messages scrolling through my status bar since I updated to android 6.0.1 via ota update (stock rom). In Messages > More > Settings > Notifications the option "Preview Messages" is On. Pop-up notifications is off, I don't like those but I do like getting a preview in my status bar. Is this feature gone? I also poked around in the advanced notification settings and didn't find a setting for it.
even this issue happens for other apps such as whatsapp, telegram and ...
I think it has to do something with overlay permissions, try searching it in settings...
These settings enable apps like FB Messenger to appear on your screen as a "bubble".
---------- Post added at 08:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:32 PM ----------
sorry misread
Thanks for your answering, but i have changed this setting before this.
The problem is existing until now
I have the same problem. After android update I no longer can see message preview on top of the scren. Before an update, whenever I was getting a text, app/game I was using, was 'shrinking' on top of the screen and I saw who sent a message and what was in it. Now I only see an envelope on top of the screen and that's it. It's incredibly annoying cause before I knew if I had to respond to a text immediately or if it could wait. Now I need to swipe the screen from the top to see who texted me. Any advice?
Nothing
It seems there is not any solution to this annoying problem, i surf all the internet but nothing found.
If you want you can get preview to be written in status bar like in 4.4 kitkat, i did that to my phone, no heads up, but i can see preview
Thats great
Oh yes, i absolutly want that, please tell me how its possible,
Best regards

Hey man, no you don't need root (i think) you can try it is just 1 minute job.
Now that you have done that connect your phone to a pc using a cable, run CMD as administrator on your PC, and type adb devices
There should be some sort of numbers and next to them "device"
After you can see your device just type
adb shell settings put global heads_up_notifications_enabled 0
wait 10 seconds and restart phone
Edit: this may not work on marshmallow but you can try

okay simple fix
- Download the latest version of Google Play Services from APK Mirror
(I would put link but I am new to this forum and it won't let me)
- Make sure the version number is xx.x.xx (030-xxxxxxxxx)
- Install
to fix grub menu not showing up on uefi systems
open cmd as admin and type:
bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\PhoenixOS\Boot\grubx64.efi
Reboot
you can thank me later

sadly for oreo we cannot just install overlay apk anymore to make it work.
options are:
1. install overlay apk (and reboot) then do some adb things to cmd overlay enable it (need plug to pc)
2. have samsung theme that hide this panel.
3. use substratum (and paid andromeda) and have some subs dev to make this hide sim panel (need plug to pc)
i hate oreo for this. maybe just me, but oreo sucks compared to easy theming in rootless nougat.
edit: here's reference to option 1: (need to edit bat file and change apk name)

Disable automatic OTA Updates without Root?

Hey i had two Fire HD 10 2019 (9th Gen) Devices.
With one i was playing around, using it casually. I used Amazon Fire toolbox for some personalization, mostly debloating and running it on Nova launcher but as an passionate Android User i wanted Root of curse. Well long story short this Device updated to FireOS 7.3.1.1 because i was not careful enough. But i still have the second (never used or turned on) Device with the not-updated firmware.
Now according to this Post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=81211523&postcount=228 it is somehow possible to gain root even if its only temporary (that would be enough for me atm and very nice if accomplishable) but i am actually a bit scared to turn it on and disable OTA with ADB because firstly i am not sure if that is a permanent fix or if i have to apply the command every time i turn the phone on (could possibly be done with tasker or something somilar?) and secondly if the update could be faster than me blocking it (maybe i'm to paranoid right now but i want to make sure i get root on that device and really dont want to miss my chance for it because of OTA updates.
Also i tried to root it but without sucess (well i didn't know there was another hard button combination when the white triangle was showing so i was really close away from the finish line it feels like) then i went to sleep and the next morning i had the new update applied.. really unfortunate. Well thatswhy i want to make a better job with the second device!
Thanks in advance for any help! Have a wonderful day and excuse any typings

I simply followed this post (below), and so far . . . no updates. As the OP suggests, others have suggested to him this *MAY NOT* be permanent. However, as the OP also reports, he had another device for 7 months with no update or even check for update. On all seven of my Fire HD 10 2019 devices, no update has occurred or even been checked - just the same:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=81095517&postcount=147
As for the adb shell stuff, that is beyond my current understanding. Learning about the bootless root that @diplomatic put together, I'm wondering that perhaps there is a script method that can be loaded after boot to ensure OTA is disabled every time. But then again, I'm not aware if it would still be considered permanent or what could re-enable the OTA (as the OP to post 147 above had said in the following post 149).

Need help with Step 9 !?!?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=79626434&postcount=135
I am stuck at Part 9 !!
when i restart at this point nothing happens and when i start init.d scripts support app and "run scripts now"" i get the following execution results:
Code:
[COLOR="Red"]Can't aquire root privileges (date)[/COLOR]
[B]Executing scripts from /storage/emulated/0/init.d (date)[/B]
suboot.sh
[COLOR="red"]/storage/emulated/0/init.d/suboot.sh[121]: ./mtk-su: No such File or Directory[/COLOR]
In Magisk Manager i see that Magisk is not installed (and i can't without TWRP, right?)
I'm just stuck at this Point. I have read in some other Forum that there is a button combination that i can press while seeing that white triangle when trying to enter recovery mode to actually be able to enter it. and yeah from there on it would be easy i guess to install magisk and maybe init.d will recognize it then?
Thanks for helping
I got it to work! Thanks to the incredible help of @dr_docdoc :good:
I picked arm64. By changing to arm it worked
Very happy about it. thanks again!

Try this:
Code:
adb shell pm disable-user com.amazon.device.software.ota
adb shell pm disable-user com.amazon.device.software.ota.override
adb shell pm disable-user com.amazon.kindle.otter.oobe.forced.ota
adb shell pm disable-user com.amazon.settings.systemupdates
Remove Amazon's crappy and stubborn Fire launcher (you must have another launcher installed before you do this):
Code:
adb shell pm disable-user com.amazon.firelauncher
