In-App Bliling for Donations? - Android Software Development

Hello guys, we are close to release a a new free Android App. How ever, we dont want to put ads, we would hate that.
We have one question:
If we put in-app billing for receiving donations on a free App, is it against Google Policies? or ilegal?
will our app be in danger of being removed?
Anybody knows?
Thanks a lot!

In-app isn't illegal.
Better integrate an donate version instead of use in-app or a pro key.
Why in danger or removed? If your app isn't against any copyright just go for it and release it, just remember if you use external libs or code, don't forget to give proper credits where it should belongs to and of course it should be noted somewhere in the app and in google play. The benefit to not integrate inapp is that it does not need internet permissions, you can host it in F-droid if you maybe gonna release the source and of course people like me are thankful to use as less as possible google things in your app.

XDA App Store

Just wondering if anyone has thought of or better still started to build an XDA App Store.
I am thinking of an app we can all download to our phones, it will auto see what phone you have and only show those apps from XDA users, auto download updates of installed apps, auto download dependancies etc.
I have used an iphone hacked with cydia and such and it is much easier for downloading programs in this manner.
Just my 2 cents guys, I do hope we see something someday.
I know that you said that it should be XDA-specific, but another option is called App2Date.
Take a look here:
http://www.modaco.com/content/windo.../lend-your-support-to-a-generic-updater-tool/
I was thinking of making one myself, but I definitely do not have time to even start such a project. I'm fairly busy with other ones.
Its not quite what I imagined.
That program does the updates, but like cydia for a hacked iphone you should be able to download new programs as well.
I honestly don't think it would be too hard or dificult to make.
All we really need is an app to list the programs based on the device and wm version your currently running.
The only problem will be to find somewhere to store the apps. A solution could be a simple databased maintaned and hosted by XDA, that will list the program name, details, OS and device information (so you can get the correct version for your phone) and a direct download link to the cab file. This way the apps can be hosted anywhere and we can avoid having to run and pay for a huge data transfer of programs.
I can possibly help with the database if anyones interested in helping to write the actuall app. Then the listings can be maintaned by xda registered users.
Hi,
i am one of the developers of mobile2day.com an we have the possibility to provide a big database with applications mapped to several devices. So we can show only applications for a specific device.
We have allready a mobile solution running on http://mobile2day.mobi/en/usd/index.html where you can buy and download applications. Maybe we can think about to add beta software, too.
Please, if you are interested feel free to contact me.
I was owner of an iPhone before I bought my Touch Pro and besides the fact that the iPhone is not that good it has one big advantage: The AppStore
I would love that kind of store for WM Apps

[Q] Can you help me validate this idea?

Hi everybody, i would like to validate an idea which is not a mobile app but a service that could help mobile developers in promoting their apps...or at least i think it could!
So, this is the idea: i would like to create a promocodes service.
It would allow mobile apps (but even web apps) to call the service to verify promocodes validity so that developers can easily integrate the service within their apps, and have a gui to create and manage all the promocodes (with analytics about usage). I think this should help developers promoting their apps: dev could give promocodes away to blog reviewers or as a sort of bonus for another app or for other services to users.
I'm honestly asking your opinion about this idea and would like to know what do you think about it. I would be very gratefull to hear anybody's opinion, so please, post a reply and give me feedbacks!
Thanks in advance.
Just to clarify: my idea is about a webapp which allows to create/generate custom promocodes, not to use the ones that is possible to require to Google for paid apps. I think this could be a useful service for developers.
As an example, you can create a free app where features and functionalities are unlocked using promocodes (suppose permanently using specific promocodes that you give to a blog reviewer for example so he can have a full app at no cost, or just temporary unlocked as a trial period for common users). When the user decide to buy the paid-version of the app, he can still buy the paid-version from the PlayStore or permanently unlock the free version, directly from the app using IAP apis.
I think that it could help engage more users, also in games apps where user buys virtual goods, because you could post special promocodes on blogs or somewhere else, to give them free goods so to let them be interested in having a look at your blog or somewhere else where you can drive a different way to promote your apps (tips and tricks, promote other apps and so on...).
Do you think it could be a useful service? Would you use it?
Please, leave me a feedback, even a short one but i'd really like to see what people thinks about it.
Thanks in advance

Android: Unlock application's additional features with Facebook share or tweet

I have a free application published on Google Play. I want to add some new features and ask users to 'pay' for them with Facebook shares or tweets.
Scenario:
1. User updates application
2. New features are available in settings but they are not active
3. To activate feature user has to share information about my application on FB or on Tweeter
4. Only if sharing was successful feature will be available to the user.
For me it seems like a good idea to spread information about application in social media... however I can't find any 'out of the box' solution (library or code). Is there any?
Has anybody tried this approach and was it successful?
Also I'm trying to find out if this method is compliant with Google Play policy. I've read play.google.com/about/developer-content-policy.html with great care but I didn't find any clues. Has anyone got any policy violations emails from Google after implementing this method?
Maybe you can find something in the Facebook API.

What do you use to code? There's tons of assets for Unity that'd do what you're trying to do.

I'm not using Unity but develop my app in 'pure' Android SDK.
Just found this library: http://www.codeproject.com/Tips/457153/How-to-integrate-Facebook-Twitter-Linkedin-in-Andr
It looks promising so I'll give it a try.
You mean reward users for posting on Facebook or any social share, sure I dont think its that hard,
just everytime a user presses on the Share button add some coins to him ingame, you can also make
alot of money if you reward useres for watching a video ad in your game like a Vungle ad.

Alternatives to Google Play Store

I'd like to try setting up my N9005 without Play Store and Google Play Services. Part of the reason is the battery use by Google Apps of various types and the other is the necessity of allowing those apps access to dial the phone, send SMS etc.
I'd like to see if I can make my phone more efficient AND more secure.
So far I'm looking at getjar.com, androidtapp.com and appbrain.com. Which app sites do you use and is it reasonable to find one that provides apps that don't use Google Play functions?
Suggestions welcome and experiences on any alternative sites would be appreciated? Also opinions or experiences in getting rid of the google connection...
I'm currently running @temasek 's cm13 - v 3.5 (more properly @joshndroid 's cm13 now he is building it )
I tried once

I once tried to use my Nexus 7 without Gapps. and then my Livescore app said it needed GPServices. again a shopping app said it needed GPS to run. then I installed Gapps :|
So we're stuck with Google unless we reduce functionality way down?
Hm... I recall seeing a CM Apps option a while back and I am running AOSP on my N9005 - will have a look for it. Thanks for the Reply.

the best thing would be installing Pico or Nano version of GApps. Only Play store, Play Services and Contact Sync come with it.

While that sounds good, those are pretty much exactly the apps that crash the phone if you try to interfere with call/SMS permissions. What I am trying to find out is if it is possible to have a functional and useful phone WITHOUT having Google privy to everything I do.
Just because I am paranoid doesn't mean they're not after me.
You may or may not be interested in this talk by Snowden - think it's about halfway through where he discusses how the various companies have peeled away security for the alphabet agencies.

It's possible, but it'll depend on your definition of "functional".
I run my phone without gapps, and have calendar and contacts sync with my own server. I use syncthing for file sync, and open source for almost everything (Skype being one exception).
So for me it's fully functional, and the battery life is great. YMMV.

Without GApps where do you get your apps? I've been touring sites trying to find a decent one and also discovering apps to replace those with Google links. The issue currently seems to be many good apps still tie back into Play for updates or verification purposes.
For example I have SPenCommand from a Google+ site but updates can usually be manual - i.e. I could DL them on PC and copy them over. The problem would be needing to have a link to the site (I think) to licence check. But that's something I can ask the Dev about.
That sounds pretty close to what I need. Phone, Contacts, Calendar, preferably syncing to Outlook on PC but given I am also thinking of moving to Linux, not wedded to Outlook or MS Products, nor I guess even to live syncing. I WOULD like to have backups in case phone goes away suddenly, but I can learn to use Cloud - something I have been avoiding.
I like playing with ROMs and have just started a course in App development online - my thought was to set up a dual boot with a standard GApps setup for testing as well as an unlinked one for daily driver.
Been looking at Aptoide as a store that maybe i can use without a Google account. Seems to have quite a few categories of apps so i am currently trying to work out what I need versus what I want on my phone. I currently have quite a few apps that i haven't touched in months so I figure they are probably not needed.
Any suggestions on what you consider a must have app or app category?
One possible alternative to play store is Blackmarket. It works great and it has almost all the apps present in the play store. And its best feature is that it provides paid apps for free

Oops sorry i forgot about that. My bad. I will remember it now.
Hi.
I'm testing now the following approach.
With Titanium Backup I froze Google Play (not for Google Play Services because I'm testing) and use Aptoide and Uptodown apps to updating.
My issue is Google Play is ALWAYS changing its configs which I've set to "not update automatically" and lots of warnings on screen telling me Google Play or Play Services stopped working.
Also I'm testing whether other apps also stop working.
Aptoide and Uptodown apps obey much better and don't change its configs.
Am I right that all these stuff are related to Google Play, soon I'll be able to return here with a more affirmative answer.

Thanks!! Would love to give this a try! Cheers.
okay.. promo code took a few minutes before it started working.
VERY first impressions: These days, Android users are paranoid...
The "first time setup" screen explains why it needs Admin/KLMS rights, but then claims it needs to connect to a server to "get data." Being it asks for device admin rights, it would be nice if there was a better explanation than a vague "get data." What kind of data? Is it getting the payload for a virus? Is it getting a listing of possible bloatware? License data? Calculations for determining that next lunar eclipse? What?
I'm not likely to give something "admin" rights unless I know what kind of data it's going to pull from some server someplace.
Yes please. In for one

Exactly, we need Internet to check License data, but sometimes It take a long time (maybe 1 minute) so we decide pop up a notify "Getting Data from server"
We guarantee that we Never collect any Data of users, and Never payload for Virus
You can check by use any Internet Checker Tool like Internet Speed Meter https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kaikaisoft.internetmeter
Nothing was downloaded, nothing sent, we sure 100%
If everyone have a question about this app, contact us at [email protected]
If you enjoy this app, please rate us 5 star on Google Play, It will help us alot :highfive:
Thanks

I'd strongly suggest to change the "get data" text to be more specific. Perhaps something like:
"After [Device Administration] is enabled, this application will need to connect to a Licensing Server to verify licensing data. Therefore, please ensure Internet Connectivity is enabled."
(BTW, I'm posting on this thread instead of via private email so that others can also comment on the feedback. As this is XDA-Developers, there will be other devs who might have other or better ways to word things.)
I'm in!
