I've always thought about this ever since a buddy of mine coded a little bot to do about the same thing to an online game.
Anyway,the real question I guess is, What can be done to prevent these types of thing from happening? What do you think?
Doesnt Android tell you everything a program is going to access before it's installed? I ALWAYS read that.
The only thing that this article is trying to point out is that non tech savvy users, which are probably a lot of Smartphone users won't really understand or care to know the "details" of the apps and what its all going to do, as such; they're more prone to installing these malicious apps. On top of that, they were showcasing that right now, they've only taken the GPS coordinates from the phone, but if they wanted to - passwords, messages, etc could be taken from the phone without anyone ever knowing.
I think this is good, it makes people more aware and allows us to be more cautious. Not mention, it's becoming obvious that Mobile data/traffic is easy to target and probably even easier to trick users (than on computers) because of lack of security and the notion that ones' phone cannot be "hacked" or what not.

i had to go threw SlideMe.org to get a app because my bank blocked Android Market lol anyway. They sent out a server wide warning that app was bad last night.
BTW is there an app which logs where and what your phone sends? Like "littlesnitch"?

There's not much that can be done about this, and it's a perfectly legitimate threat.
Yes, the app DOES tell you what it will be doing, but nearly any app that has Network access and Fine Location, especially if it does grab your GPS coordinates for something in the app itself, could send stuff behind the scenes and you'd be completely unaware.
I definitely don't think this will be the last time we'll hear about this sort of malicious app.

Of course but you don't know EXACTLY what the app is doing with the info(unless you tear it apart).Like in the example a weather widget,of course its going to use gps.So what if another app that can access your phones info that would typically need to, but is broadcasting that info to a remote server.If you get what I'm, trying to get at.

The only truly saving grace of these phones about the sensitivity of location awareness with respect to paranoia of the same, is that we can pull the battery and remove any doubt that the phone cannot disclose its function or location.
There was an article I read a while ago that the Fed's had issued over 3 million location requests last year to Sprint on users - warrant-less! How's that for Paranoia!!!
But all these apps in the market has the Buyer Beware tag so, of course at some point or another it will be exploited! For the most part, the idea of location awareness and marketing/advertisement and or service oriented provisioning is a great concept. The openness of the Android system to provide the same - will undoubtedly have it's shortfalls. A Good Firewall app that notifies and asks for approval prior to transmitting info or accepting connections from an app would go a long way to controlling potential problems. Just like a PC, which basically these phones have become.
well, considering I don't go on any financial sites from my phone, there's not much they can get off it...do they want my school email password? Have at it...they can read those worthless emails if they want (heck, even send a nice threatening email to my profressors for all I care lol).
Not to mention that my phone gets wiped a few times a week, just like so many other people here, there's not much they can get unless they can manage to hack into my google account and steal my credit card info...in which case, they won't be able to spend much on that account, since there's nothing in it lol.
This is as bad as "big brother" listening to my phone calls. What do I care? lol. If someone wants to know where I am, then by all means, let them know where I am. I'm not doing anything of interest to them.
On a side note, we apparently have caught the attention of the mods in this sub-forum, and have become a "family forum" according to a different thread lol.

My thoughts also, but I don't know if it is a true Firewall or just handles calls...
A security issue is still a security issue even if it doesn't affect you, and an invasion of privacy is still an invasion of privacy even if you don't care about it. Not trying to start any sort of flame here, please don't take it that way. Just mean to say that if you wait to take a stance on a known problem until it becomes YOUR problem, haven't you maybe waited too long?

Everything about this is garbage ... do I care? No. Some folks definitely have a stronger opinion of this than others. He takes others work and 'passes it off' as his own. I don't deny that people can't be bothered to do this stuff and will pay others for the 'work' but the wording is always the funny part. Its like me posting a listing and utilizing everyone else's contributions.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I've seen people on CL ASKING to pay for someone to root their phone. I always email them right away, tell them about the one click root method with the video walkthrough, and to save their money. Craigslist is full of ****heads and scammers, but this is a service that people want, and just don't know where to get good information. I always get thank you emails after for showing them XDA, and saving them money.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with what the guy is doing. He's offering his services for a fee... Capitalism at its best!
You think how much time you've spent learning how to do this, familiarizing yourself with the process. Learning what to do when something goes wrong, etc, etc. If you're a youngin or unemployed, you have time to do this. Some people are not tech savvy, not computer literate, and think cmd is some highly technical code. These people will pay you for results.
If you know what you are doing and can deliver, there's nothing wrong with marketing your skills. There is information out there on how to change the head gasket for my car, or install a new clutch. I don't have the right tools or the inclination to get under the hood to do this myself. I take the car to a repair facility. Same concept here.
Or better yet, why go to a doctor... There are books you can read to research your illness and determine a course of therapy. The list goes on and on.

Am I ignorant? I don't know, i'll let god be the judge of that. I do know one thing though, i'd much rather be ignorant than a low life moron.
The majority of people who do not know how to root there phones are not ignorant or lazy simply because they "lack knowledge". First off, you can't be ignorant and lazy at the same time wise guy...think about it for a second (just don't think too hard and hurt yourself)
Secondly, how are people supposed to know that rooting even exists if no body tells them? Are they just supposed to assume that when they purchase their device that it has a stock rom on it and is un-rooted? I'm sorry, but very few people are as wise or psychic as you or they may not have nerd friends to explain to them what rooting is, therefore they can not possibly know to look on the internet for how to root there phone because they have no clue that such a process exist.
this does not make them ignorant because they aren't choosing to not know how to root, they simply haven't learned the facts (and yes, the majority of people have no clue what rooting is, so go pat yourself on the back for being superior to all of these ignorant lazy people)
Lastly, most of these people on craigslist doing this junk tend to focus their advertising on customizable roms, free tethering, overclockingg, etc etc. They rarely emphasize the fact that they are rooting the phone which is wrong.
Taking advantage of consumers lack of knowledge is not a good thing. Just because it's the status quo doesn't justify it...That is ignorant.

Its not quite the same ... I mean, I get what you're saying ... but, skills? You aren't doing anything but taking someone else's work and using it for your financial betterment. Your argument would make more sense if you were repairing hardware or something ... acknowledgment isn't given for the people that have set up these simple and idiot proof root methods ... or the ROMs themselves. Sure, they might not say they 'made' the ROMs or rooting methods ... but they didn't say they didn't, either. And they don't have to do as much. there is no doubt that are people out there that don't know about rooting. i'm not arguing that. you said that "most" people don't know it even exists. that's a made-up statistic that you concocted in your head, probably around the same time that you started believing that it's impossible to be ignorant and lazy.
regardless, how does one know that rooting exists without anybody telling them? this is probably going to sound like i'm dividing by zero, but a possible answer is... they discover it themselves! yes, people are capable of doing that! the human brain is indeed quite impressive and capable of independent thought and education. people don't have to be told by someone that something exists. it is possible for things to be discovered without being told by someone. (how do you think america, or any physical element was discovered?)
put yourself in your grandma's shoes. she doesn't know anything about this technology stuff, but she is learning because recently she discovered that are phones out there that can do many things. these phones can let you browse the internet, use your phone as a hotspot, will even let you video chat with your grandchildren, and they even have these touchscreens that allow you to just use your fingers instead of having to press a bunch of buttons! amazing! being the curious little grandma that she is, she goes home, opens up internet.com, and decides to type "evo smartphone" into her AskJeeves toolbar that she has installed. Her mind is opened to a plethora of information where she discovers what is possible with these phones. She does her research and decides that she wants one.
the moral of the story? she wants a ****ing smartphone because of its capabilities, and she didn't learn everything she knew about because of someone telling her about it -- she did her research. "most" people dont just walk into a sprint store and buy an android smartphone not knowing what it is capable of. these people have played with sprint's demo phones, they have played with their friends' phones, they have watched youtube videos of it in action. they know what the **** the phone is capable of. being the curious humans that we are, a majority of us know for a fact that the things we buy are not limited just to what the manufactures make us believe. so don't give me that bull**** statement that you have to be psychic or have nerd friends with gadget toys to figure things out for yourself.

this sentence is very subjective. it's good for the person taking advantage of it because that means money in his pockets and some extra food on the table for his family. it's not good for the person being taken advantage of because he/she could be doing all this for free. being taken advantage of, and then realizing that you've been taken advantage of could be good for the customer because maybe that's what it takes to open his eyes and learn from his mistakes. in that case, it could be a good thing for both parties.
now, i dont necessarily agree with his tactics. i do feel that he should just be educating people; doing it for free or even much cheaper; or be more clear (and honest) when explaining what he is doing. but, that is not the case. he's simply trying to make a quick buck, and it might be working. that doesn't make him stupid or a moron. shady? sneaky? sure, but definitely not stupid.

Mine does have this annoying touch problems, and it's really annoying. Yours fine? Good, please don't disrespect others complaint if yours "fine".
This is the kind of thing I don't understand, someone does a thread of the issue/news on it and suddenly comes people with their "fine" product and post how "fine" theirs are or/and that they don't care.
If your Nexus is "fine", then no need to read about it, enjoy it, but there are a lot of us who got a bad unit, I can't return it because it started after the 15 days of return warranty, so I'm stuck with it.

Yup, and the 15 day return period is a joke as well.
All defects should be covered by a free replacement warranty equal to the product warranty.....NOT REPAIR...and the customer should not pay a dime for shipping.
At least one year......after the way Google has handled this they should extend the free replacement warranty to 3 years. (Yeah right)
I'm not buying an Asus device again that's for sure, at least not until the product is well tested...

Mine works fine.
I'm not sure if 7 people in that thread is really Google taking a beating. Also, it really isn't Google's problem. It is Asus'. How many tablets were sold vs how many have the issue. I got mine on launch day and no issue. I've had to send a few different items back to Asus in the past and had to pay shipping every time, but then again, $7 for shipping vs having to buy a new item is ok in my eyes. What a gimme gimme gimme world we live in.

Next time, read well before quoting something directed to another user. I was specifically quoting him for saying that most of the complaints were exagerated, were a touch problem on a touch screen device is definitely not exagerated, besides how could you know if your device is working "fine". My quote wasn't directed at you, not interested in continuing this.

Mine's been working fine with no issues *knocks on wood*. I got it at launch. I don't expect any device to launch without issues but maybe it's just me. I'm not seeing this as a common widespread issue.

Okay replace and with so, my point still stands.
I also don't see how my analogy would be offensive to someone who knows someone with breast cancer so don't turn it into that, you also don't make the rules so I'll bring it up if I want to.

Yup.
My touchscreen was mildly effected also. Mostly the missing touch problem when not holding the device (ie: sitting on a table or such).
Rooted using the forum tutorials, installed sfhub's ts10 update and the touchscreen works fine now. No skips, no missing or ghost touches.
For the record, I've only been using android for about 2 weeks now so it's not that hard to learn how to apply the fix that worked on mine.
Now, should an end user have to do you this to their device? Nope, it should come this way. For mine it was such an easy fix, it would seem they have no excuse for not designing the software properly in the first place.
I quite like the rest of the devices features (ie: nice screen, battery life, speed, just right size for book reading and fitting in my coat pocket, etc) and it's quickly becoming a favorite device of mine.
As to those saying thiers works fine, I think they are valid comments. Not all the devices are effected and as is normal with human behavior, those that feel "screwed" are often the ones who are the loudest. Not that they're not justified in being upset with getting a "broken" product, they are.
But it is equally valuable to hear from those that get products that work.
How else are we going to know if there are more bad than good if we don't also hear from "the good"?

You're absolutely right: I don't make the rules and you can bring it up if you want to. I was simply suggesting that life and death disease analogies can always offend Someone and might be a little overboard on an Android forum.
You would need to replace so with and. He was making two separate points and connecting with the word and, while you are expressing cause-effect with so (should be used in conclusion). Though due to ambiguity I could be completely wrong. You brought up logic. I just thought it would be easier for two rational human beings to get to the same spot.
And my G2 screen is wonkier than my Nexus 7. Turning it off and back on seems to solve it though.

I am one of those people. After devs here on XDA put together near perfect AOSP roms for my ThunderBolt, I expected stuff coming out of Google directly to be rock solid. N7 is my first Nexus device, and I am quite disappointed with regular random reboots that I still have, as well as intermittent touch screen issues. For example, I can't play Subway Surfers since N7 keeps ignoring some portion of screen touches (leading me to crash lol).
My HTC DNA, however, is rock solid on the stock rom. Why can't a Nexus device be the same? People typically complain of manufacturers adding stuff to android that makes it worse. Well, I am not so ready to say that now. As far as I am concerned, HTC is doing a better job with their devices than Google.
PS, TB was buggy when it came out, but all the bugs were subsequently fixed, even on Verizon!

So I guess I am not quite as paranoid as you, yet.

Ya, but what proof do we have at this point that it's not listening when actually -off-? I have none. (ref: OnStar) If you deal in sensitive matters, would you give them the credit? I wouldn't.
Looking into this, I find there is no viable Linux alternative, as we used to have with Opie. So either I block everything G**gle with an independent app like Android Firewall, or do with 4.4.4.

The phone listens for certain frequencies of sound in certain orders, if it doesn't see those, it keeps looking. It doesn't record every single thing said and send it to Google, it only sends what you say to it (everything past "OK Google").
It's the same way a button works. Nothing records when a button isn't pressed, but things records when it is.
As for the rest of Google, they do make their living off of a free service, what more can you expect? I'd rather pay for a no ad version of their stuff instaid, but untill that's possible, that's just the way it works if you want those beautiful services.

It's simple my friend...... A smartphone is not for you then. Get an old flip phone and no one will spy on you. ?
No tablet or computers with cameras or microphones either.
New cars have Bluetooth... Not good.
Some TV's and video game consoles have cameras. Gone.

Yeah.. it's not recording and streaming everything you say. The always listening feature isn't going to decipher everything you say until it matches the hot word, that would kill your battery. It's only kicks in when it detects multiple tones in a certain order.. I don't even know why I'm typing this, think what you want dude, that's not how it works. Keep your conspiracy theories to yourself.

The phone has a co-processor which is independent of the main system. Sure, its main function is to watch for keywords and instigate searches based on commands, but it can also be co-opted. I'm not saying any more because apparently I'm frightening a few people here who don't want to face it.

Nice trivializing there, Darth. Of course I've hardened what I have, and since this is such a touchy subject I'm not giving any hints. You have no idea who I am or why I bring this up.
You guys just blithely hand over all your contacts, your network of friends, your calendar, the websites you visit, your searches, your location 24x7, hell your very phone calls. I feel sorry for younger people these days who have no idea that all their online activity will follow them around -forever-. The stupid things they say online, being victimized by bullies, all will follow them to every future job application, every romantic engagement, and their future neighbors will know more about them than they can imagine.
