You do not need root or anything else. This will work if you're bone stock.
The easiest way accomplish this is with an SD Card.
Once you have downloaded the OTA, copy it to your SD Card.
Power off device
Boot in Bootloader:
While device is off HOLD Vol-Down and TAP the Power Button once (do not hold the power button). Let go of Vol-Down once you see logo.
Boot into Recovery
Once in Bootloader use the Volume buttons to navigate to Recovery Mode, use Power button to select.
You will then see an Android with an ! and says no command. IGNORE THIS.
Push Vol-UP and then Power.
You will access the Recovery Menu.
Select Apply Update from SD Card.
Find your .zip and select.
It will apply update and will say finished at the bottom of the screen.
Now select Reboot System.
Wait till it boots.
Depending on your setup it can take anywhere from 2min to 30min. Be patient.
Now you have your update. Enjoy

Updated my US LTE version with this file and everything seems to be just fine. just beware that after flashing the Nvidia logo will remain on the screen for 3-5 minutes before finalizing the upgrade script. I must admit I did sweat a little...

I put the zip in mysdcard and boot to recovery. I flashed it from there. I had previously installed CWM on my tablet....

For stock
ADB sideload. Or SD Card
Power off device.
Hold Volume Down then Power button until Bootloader.
Choose Recovery
Then your option.
If you do it through the computer its:
Adb devices
adb sideload filename.zip
Reboot
Done just like the Nexus devices.

Flashed via PhilZ, worked like a charm.

I can't believe is that easy, I'm super happy and I will be testing it once I load it in to the SM Card.

For some reason I can't get it to boot into the bootloader by pressing the power and volume down. It just boots up and shuts down, how long should I wait until I let go?

Steps that worked for me:
Shut down
Wait 20 seconds after shut down
Hold Vol Down
Press power button (don't hold)

Sounds like the stock recovery. Someone on GeForce forums is reporting that you can use flashify with the stock recovery, though!

From the No Command screen hold Power + Up Volume. You should see the recovery options.
My SDCard would not mount, so I had to ADB Sideload the file. After a long reboot things seem to be working just fine.

Bit of a noob question, but how do i know if my shield tab is a US LTE or EU LTE???

Did you use stock recovery?

Sideloaded about an hour ago and everything seems fine with my TMO service.

Those of you who're in the US and have flashed your LTE unit and who use T-mobile, can you give us any impressions of the alleged "fix" nvidia did for T-mobile LTE signals/coverage? Better? Worse? No difference?
I'm really struggling to decide whether or not I should wait or go ahead and install this "EU" rooted version instead. The only thing I am interested in is better T-Mobile LTE coverage. On KitKat, the LTE T-mobile signal is either non-existent or abysmal at best.

[solved] Flash CWM despite green android bot in recovery?

Hello,
I updated my UK Xoom 3G (MZ601) via OTA to 3.2 (H.6.5-17-3) last year.
Since I got interested in rooting the device I read I have to install CWM first.
However, when going into recovery mode (for testing) all I get is a green android bot.
Thanks to some googling I found some website that mentions to hold the power button (while the green android bot is shown) and press volume up, then release the power key. Now I see the stock 3e recovery menu.
Is it safe to simply unlock the bootloader and flash CWM via ADB? Or am I required to flash back to the xoom dev stock rom because of the green fella? My question refers to this part:
Or, if you do not already have root on your xoom when you get the green bot of ! then you have to do the following with the stock moto files for your device (from moto dev).
(This Wipes your Xoom )
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot -w
fastboot reboot
Click to collapse
Not sure why I would have to do that? In the end, I'd want to have a rooted stock 3.2.
First unlock it indeed while seeing the green bot in recovery.
(using the commands you posted yourself)
Then, you back into recovery, and push the new cwm recovery using adb
(look on the xda xoom's section: you'll find the right tutorial; should start with downloading adb, downloading cwm into the same directory as where you put the adb drivers for the xoom. Then open command as administrator, etc.)
After that, you should have CWM (or I recommend the touch Rogue recovery! ) on your Xoom, instead of the ugly little green bot, now allowing you to flash many, many ROMs, zips and many other to your device!
Enjoy. Hope this is clear enough and helps you towards the right direction! (if so, please do thank me, since I only just made an XDA account and would like at least one thanked post lol.
If not, please PM me or ask further explanations in this thread! )

I suppose you only refer to the adb commands without flashing the img files, right?
I still don't know why that other thread suggested to flash back to an older version first (see quote in my first posting)? Can anyone tell me if I have to downgrade at all?

First unlock it using those fastboot commands you posted. You should in this series of commands not flash anything yet. Just unlock it first. When rebooting and showing the Moto logo:
Get back into recovery and then push the new recovery.img using adb commands
As far as I know, there is not one reason to downgrade. Should work just fine.

Otherwise, use this as your guideline and you should be fine:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249798
Thank you! All worked out fine. I followed the guide step by step, I did not downgrade the existing ROM.
In case someone else gets into the same situation and wonders how to do it:
once everything is set up for ADB and the device is found (command adb devices) type this in your command prompt window:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
waited for fastboot protocol text to show up on Xoom device, then:
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
Confirmed the warning. Then had the device booting up normally to re-enable USB debugging. Then continued:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
again waited for fastboot protocol text to show up on Xoom device, then:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-Tiamat-R4c-100611-1150-cwm.img
When it said flashing done I restarted the Xoom (holding power button + volume up). About 3-4 sec after seeing the Motorola pic I hit volume down ("android recovery" is displayed), then volume up and CWM showed up.
Since I was already in CWM I also applied the universal root method ("install zip from sdcard" -> "choose zip from sdcard", then selected the actual file on the sd card, installed it, rebooted). Root works.
P.S.: just realized silly me forgot to do a nanddump before rooting.
something like forgetting a nanddump only happens once!
Glad to see it worked for you!
Even happier to see you didn't need to downgrade.
Once you flash a custom ROM, you'll have 3G and ICS!
I did the same a couple of months ago, and my device felt brand new!

Boot loop after Android O DP2 update

I installed Android O DP2 update via OTA yesterday. The phone updated, rebooted to the new build and restarted abruptly and since then has been stuck in a boot loop. The Google logo shows up, goes to the android animation step and then Google logo appears again.
I don't have bootloader unlocked, don't have TWRP and have done OTA updates. I am able to get into the stock recovery mode.
How do I fix this, i.e. make it work in any way without erasing the user data? I don't mind extreme steps (without erasing user data) because I was planning to reflash 7 with unlocking & rooting today.
Try to wipe cache from recovery - in recovery hold volume-down and select "Wipe cache partition". Should do the trick
I tried, didn't work. Had to factory reset in the end. Also opted out of beta
I just read that some people that took the update from certain builds had boot loops due to the update only replacing part of the OS but leaving the 7.x.x system in place causing it to boot loop. I think it was like on android authority or something like that.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I have similar problem. Phone became stuck at Google logo and bootloop. I didn't have OEM unlock and debugged enable when phone was working. Now I'm stuck because It cannot flash with any factory image rom. Anyone with solution, please help. Thanks

To flash a system image:
Download the latest system image for your Nexus 6p, then unzip it to a safe directory.
https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/angler-n2g47o-factory-dc258043.zip
or Download any of your choice from here
https://developers.google.com/android/images
Connect your device to your computer over USB.
Start the device in fastboot mode with one of the following methods:
adb tool
http://developer.android.com/tools/help/adb.html
Using a key combo: Turn the device off, then turn it on and immediately hold down the relevant key combination for your device.

If necessary, unlock the device's bootloader using one of the following methods:
Code:
fastboot flashing unlock
If you are updating an older device, run this command:
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
The target device will show you a confirmation screen. (This erases all data on the target device.)
Open a terminal and navigate to the unzipped system image directory or Open a command prompt from within your System image folder (navigate to where you have flash-all.bat located on your PC, shift + right click anywhere within that folder, select open command prompt here
Execute the flash-all script.
Code:
fastboot flash-all.bat
This script installs the necessary bootloader, baseband firmware(s), and operating system.
Once the script finishes, your device reboots. You should now lock the bootloader for security:
Start the device in fastboot mode again, as described above.
Execute:
Code:
fastboot flashing lock
or, for older devices, run:
Code:
fastboot oem lock
Locking bootloader will wipe the data on some devices. After locking the bootloader, if you want to flash the device again, you must run fastboot oem unlock again, which will wipe the data.

Thanks for your reply..But you can only do this only if you have an unlocked bootloader and debugged mode on. I didn't have either so it won't allow to flash with locked bootloader.

If your touch screen isn't working, it might be related to the Android O Beta you flashed. Can you boot the phone up? If you have an OTG cable, connect a mouse to your phone. Turn on OEM unlocking in developer options. Do a factory reset.
i have the same problem with this, and i cannot unlock it too, is there anyway to unlock this phone?

If you get a bootloop when selecting recovery, try rebooting to recovery with fastboot
Code:
fastboot reboot recovery
if that doesn't work, then i think your device is bricked.

If your touch screen isn't working, it might be related to the Android O Beta you flashed. Can you boot the phone up? If you have an OTG cable, connect a mouse to your phone. Turn on OEM unlocking in developer options. Do a factory reset.

So I Follow your suggestion and I bought the OTG adapter, works perfectly I unlocked the bootloader from the developers options, did a factory restore with a previous image, etc.... Touch still not working, I'm starting to believe this a hardware problem with the screen.... Bad Luck maybe, I don't know! ..... I will have to buy that expensive screen ($140).
Anyway thanks for the help...

Method Issues
Bro, I have faced a few problems since I have started
i) When I type in adb devices it shows my phone but unauthorized
so I have to allow it as you said but only after a reboot and doing the process again will it show authorized
ii) after entering adb reboot bootloader it doesnt show bootloader locked but straight up fastboot mode
iii) then when i enter fastboot oem unlock it shows asks me if I want to unlock, I press on volume up. Then it again asks me some other thing and I hold the volume up down and power together. Next I reboot into my phone. All data erased. I setup it again.
Now, does this mean my bootloader is unlocked? When I reboot it shows something on the middle right- unlocked..
So does this mean I continue and install twrp now? or what?

1 - It doen't matter if its authorized or not..
2 - yes! thats correct it directly takes you to fastboot mode it use to show bootloader locked for old Moto phones).I 'll make changes in the thread.
Yes! your bootloader is unlocked successfully..
if you see something like 'Your devices is unlocked and cant be trusted' on the left hand side during the moto logo.

Hey bro, I am not about to install the recovery.
Before this may I ask why we need to flash boot_XT1663_356.img ?
Also, isn't this command wrong? fastboot flash boot boot_XT1663_356.img
It should be fastboot flash boot boot_XT1663_356.img
Without the boot twice ryt?
Also, will the data be erased after installing TWRP recovery or not? If not, will it be erased after installing the SuperSU?

1 - It is the Image file which is specifically build for S356 (build number) hence it is necessary to flash it before flashing TWRP. If you don't flash boot image then you might face boot loop issues and hard brick your phone.
2 - The correct command is 'fastboot flash boot boot_XT1663_356.img' . the first boot is to recognize cmd that we are flashing a boot image and the second boot is the name of image file.
3 - Flashing TWRP and Super SU won't erase your data.

Well, yes ... The new boot.img for removing encryption. Especially for post-OTA updating to XT1663_S364_170803_ROW.
boot_XT1663_364.img
Does anyone know how to keep your Moto M rooted even after updating to the new security update of 7.0? Do we just flash the new .img file or what? Kinda newb here

Need flash OEM to eliminate possible trojan spy

I suspect a trojan or other spy software so I need to flash back to OEM Oreo and start over.
Essential Support tells me to reflash if I have a concern and to download and install the fastboot version.
ADB device works
fastboot device works
But I am not sure of the steps from here. The Essential website leaves out the FastBoot procedure.
Is there a thread that can provide this noob (on Essential) with a valid step by step FastBoot flashing procedure for BOTH slots? I cannot find it.
I downloaded the FastBoot image from Essential and ran Hash software to verify a good download.
I have a very good 3.0 cable.
Thanks!
Round 1 (unsuccessful)
I tried the following procedure exactly from the Essential website:
Make sure USB debugging is enabled, then execute: adb reboot recovery
If you're unable to use ADB to reboot into recovery, you can use the key combination for your device. To get into Fastboot, press Volume-Down + Power buttons. For Recovery mode, press Volume-Up + Power buttons.
Then, navigate to the Recovery option by pressing the Volume-Down button. Once Recovery is highlighted, press the Power button to confirm.
Your device is now in Recovery mode. An Android logo with red exclamation mark should appear on screen.
Hold the Power button, then press the Volume-Up button one time. When the menu appears... until here the info was valuable. Everything after was of no value.
The OTA file did not work.
The Fastboot file did not work.
The hash codes were good. I also copied the file to the phone and back to the computer and re-ran the hash software. The hash code was still good so I suspect the cable is pretty good. It had better be for the price I paid for it!
That error seems to be a bad download. You may also need to unlock the critical partion. I was unable to install the OEM updates until I did so.
While in bootloader, fastboot flashing unlock_critical. It will give you the same bootloader unlocking message. Select yes. It will of course erase your phone so backup everything first.

Sorry I gave you the wrong code to use.

Slot a works Slot b - fubar
I have been successful flashing slot a. All works good.
But, if I change to slot b and flash, upon reboot it has the "dancing dots" forever.
If I force it back into FastBoot using the buttons, I can switch back to slot a and boot up.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Bad software on slot B...
Grab a BTS zip for whatever you feel like flashing... Most of those have been put together to flash both the A and B slots at the same time
Please forgive my ignorance... where are BTS zip files? I am trying to stay Oreo.

Pwr + volume up = fastboot.
Pwr + vol down = recovery (stock / twrp).
Don't have twrp.zip file. Reyes twrp.img file with.zip command it also didn't work. Same msg continued "press any key to shutdown" in my phone.
I tried to install Asus Android ADB interface driver perhaps it not working properly.
Search for minimal adb and fastboot...download and install
Boot into fastboot then
Fastboot flash recovery (name of file with extension)
Your twrp file must be in the same folder as adb
You have to flash twrp in fastboot and then boot to twrp right after and flash it again
use another pc...
same problem

faced the issue untill I realized it was an issue regarding USB 3.0. The phone cannot support such a higher data speed. Use a USB 2.0 hub between your PC and your phone. That solved my problem.
For some reason connecting the phone to a usb 2.0 port in my laptop also did not solve the problem.
