LRX21R Improvements - Nexus 9 General

I managed to install LRX21R update. Factory image Q first.
Any differences from Q?
I still experience warming up while browsing in chrome.

i disable chrome and use chrome beta on all my devices. doesn't seem to get very warm for me

Is battery life better with Chrome Beta?

I tried to side load the ota and it errors at package.zip. copied it over to twrp and when I try to flash it it says it's meant for a flounder while I have a volantis device. I unlocked the boot loader, used CFroot, and flashed twrp after using the factory images for the previous release.

IMO this the same as Q build but for folks like me and many others who could not install becase old recovey. I dont see many changes yet - browsing still drains like 1% every two minutes making this tablet piece of useless electronics.

Since I forgot my Nexus 10 in plane last december I owned the following tablets: samsung tab pro 8.4, samsung tab s 8.4, xiaomi mipad and now the nexus 9. Hatebto say it but this is the year I am extremely dissapointed with the absence of any progress on Android tablets.

I'm going to assume you haven't investigated what is causing your wakelocks. because that is abnormal drain time for any device. you are on lollipop, running old KitKat and donut software most likely . there are a number of free LP compatible wake lock analyzing options out there. solve your problems (in turn, help others with same issue), or consider going back to a pager.

I see no wake locs.
While screen off, it goes to deepsleep.

I got R loaded up and re-reooted. I just opened up 8 tabs in chrome and clicked on links in all of them. The N9 is not as hot as it use to be. I'm still going to play around with it and monitor, but so far so good over here.

Just got a 17MB update from Q to R. I'm getting a lot of Wi-Fi dropouts.

Yeah I'm aware of such software and using it on my 1+1. However I wanted to at least try to use my Nexus 9 as "normal user" would do for the first time. Browsing still drains ridiculous amount of battery however I confirm that it is now much better on R build. And heating is much less.
Ps never owned a pager

any improvement on screen flicking?

I got tired of waiting for Google to issue a working OTA for those of us stuck on LRX21L so I flashed the LRX21R factory image. I'm very happy with it and am glad I took plunge. Noticeable improvements on smoothness. Device still gets hots at times but its improved IMO.
FYI.. I tried following googles instruction for flashing the image. It didn't work.. It crapped out on the SYSTEM.IMG.
Manually flashing each of the IMG files went fine though and all is now working great.
Lastly,
I'd like to point out the the device restore feature worked much better than I had hoped. It even managed to keep app data settings on a couple of apps (that don't have sign in accounts).

Nexus 7 running super slow.. Think a clean 5.0 may help?

Have had my n7 since they came out (32g WiFi) and love it.. Lately she's been running real slow. (Official cm11).. If I do a full FULL wipe and drop an official 5.0.0 image on it, think that will help get some performance back? I know the internal memory type is a big limitation, any way to format it and maybe clean or speed it up?
(I've done the usual, wrote and reflash, open space, stop apps at startup, speed up tricks...)
Thanks..

A full wipe would more than likely help right now. Although with 5.0 a few weeks away, its best to wait until then. You could flash the official 5.0 factory images once they're up, or someone's bound to make a stock rooted 5.0 ROM also.
If you can't wait you could try experimenting with the f2fs formatting, there's a how to thread and a good selection of compatible ROMs available. In haven't tried it personally but most users seem to notice significant improvements on their N7.
I would suggest to install a diagnostic app like diagnosis by darken and read a report of how apps eat your cpu/ram instead of going the process of backuping and formating.
From my experience apps which slow a device
Facebook
Viber
WhatsApp
And most of the messaging apps.
A clean install of any Android version would help. ?
I would suggest using a cleaning tool like SD Maid by Darken and formatting your Cache/Dalvik Cache.

I installed 5.0 on my N7 2012 and it is crazy fast! As soon as I installed Facebook the whole thing froze up. Systemui crashed, everything crashed. Finally managed to get FB uninsulated (took 20 minutes) and it runs smooth again. Not sure what the hell FB app did, but it was pretty crazy. I tried it again and same thing.

I recommend the Facebook app below, its based on the browser version and it a hundred times lighter than the official app. Doesn't have access to the permissions (basically everything) that the official fb app has either which is better.

Unsubscribed from fb beta right now because it was making problem on my htc one aswell... Fixed problems on the HTC, but the nexus...still no go. Sometimes it works...normally (my HTC is faster, but is not horribly slower) but then I looses it all and starts lagging so badly I put it down and dont use it for 2hours, and then it's okay again...

Same problems here. I have hangups amounting to tens of seconds doing what used to be otherwise instantaneous actions when the tablet was new.
The question; is this performance degradation related to component aging or software-related? Our N7s are more or less out of 1yr warranty now and I am wondering whether there will be any traction with ASUS about a flaw which was present at purchase? Components crap out of the door outlasts a claim on fault developments in the wild.

2 things. A bloated system and cache will slow things down. And for me... My N7 seems slower every time I upgrade my phone. Lol
Wipe it clean and start again with fresh stock install. ?
Hardware doesn't slow down. It works, or doesn't work... Or can work intermittently if it's damaged. But not just slower.

Everyone in this thread is saying that 5.0 and 4.4.4 fresh install are slow for them, why is everyone saying do a fresh stock install?
I have a 2 day stock install and this works slower then my friends samsung ace.

Then go to the last version that was fast? Or a good custom rom?
My point was and is... Hardware doesn't slow down. It may break or become erratic.. But not slower.
So the issue is on the software side. ?

I never liked kit Kat either on my N7...its still running stock, rooted 4.2.2. Smooth and snappy. ?
How does google even thing about putting out something that's so slow?
Are they desperately wanting us to switch to the nexus 9?
This is my last tablet I ever bought.
So anyone has 5.0.2 allready?
I have it. I see no difference. The tab freezes for about a minute sometimes when using chrome. Dolphin is even worse. So most of the time i get these freeze ups and the whole tablet becomes unresponsive.
Anyone else?

[GUIDE] [HOW TO] Solve Random Shutdown/ Reboot Problem

People love Nexus devices for the latest version of Android it gets. It's the best device to get updated with the latest version and usually cheaper than other devices in the market with same specification though Nexus 6 is bit exceptional with a bit higher price tag. Latest Android version is always exciting to us but with latest Android version, comes Latest Bugs too May be I became sarcastic, though it's true. Android Lollipop is not an exceptional to come with some bugs. One of the major bug of Lollipop is the RAM leaking issue. People has faced some major RAM leaking issue on their Nexus 5 and now Nexus 6 is also facing it. For Nexus 6 it's a major issue because it's causing Nexus 6 to force reboot and mainly force shutdown. This issue has been marked as Complete on Google Forum by a Google Employee. Jump to the first page to see it and browse through all pages to see that so many people are facing the same issue so there is no need to be panic. You can expect a fix for it as it has been marked Completed by a Google Employee. But for now we need a solution for it. ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT IT'S NOT A HARDWARE BASED PROBLEM, IT'S THE PROBLEM OF THE STOCK KERNEL. SO DON'T GET PANICKED AND REPLACE YOU DEVICE.
If you want to get rid of this problem and want to stay in stock firmware then follow the following steps:
A> Non-Rooted Device:
1. Close all apps before doing heavy tasks. You may see "System" as a recent task, don't be panic, clear it. It may appear sometimes. Even some apps which you've not opened, they may show in recent apps.
2. Don't run some specific games like NOVA3. It'll not let you go forward from the first cut-scene. It'll force shut down the device. [Tested by me]
3. Do reboot your device once in an interval of 5-6 days. 3-4 days are recommended. If you notice the RAM usage daily, you can notice that the RAM usage by System/Settings starts increasing after 2 days of usage without any reboot.
B> Rooted:
If you're rooted, you're good to go for a permanent solution.
1. If you don't want to switch to any Custom ROM, then flash a Custom Kernel like Franco Kernel or ElementalX . It'll help you to get rid of the random reboot/ force shut down.
2. Flash Custom ROMs. There are plenty of custom ROMs available for Nexus 6 which are mostly based on 5.0.2 and doesn't cause problems like this. Giving a small list of the ROMs which are being used by most of the Nexus 6 users
Dirty Unicorns
Official SlimLP Alpha
Euphoria-OS
LiquidSmooth
N6 Nocturnal Limited Edition
If it helps, please do consider pressing the "Thanks" button
Actually, the memory leak is NOT a kernel problem. The reason why it affects *ALL* Nexus devices running 5.0.x is that it is actually a problem in frameworks.
Specifically... frameworks/base/services/core/java/com/android/server/display/ColorFade.java
Neither one of these are solutions and I wouldn't even call them workarounds either

Completely stock unrooted, never unlocked on 5.0.1.
I'm also using a stock Moto 360.
Therfreeze happens when it wants to, when I'm not using the phone. I don't usually notice until I next check my phone and the lock button doesn't unlock my phone, then I look at my Moto 360 and see that its become disconnected.

On what do you judge that? Software crypto is a very heavy memory user. From what I've heard, the reboots seem to be related to memory pressure.

"Android wear" has very serious tentacles that run through frameworks and gapps. Applications themselves COULD NOT be the problem since Android will just kill them when the memory hit becomes too big, but the frameworks tentacles are another story altogether.
In any case, my point about hwcrypto was more about performance improvements from AOSP 5.1 rather than random reboots.

Android 5.1 Lollipop OTA released for Tegra Note 7

Just saw on Twitter that NVIDIA has announced the release of Android 5.1 for Tegra Note 7 and Shield Portable.

I'm not seeing it, but am currently rooted.
Anyone have the zip?
cant see it either...
it got available for the shield portable devices. i read that news on androidpolice.com
but didn't know that nvidia said it is available for our TN7 (which isn't true for the moment). maybe it needs a few days to roll out to every one.

Seriously, I'm disappointed too. We waited months for it and now it lacks it's charm.
Some people are saying that it's faster than before and even high-end games are not lagging even a bit.
I didn't try any game like that yet, but it still feels a bit laggy anyway.
Plus, the thing I miss the most is the split system of notifications on the left, and quick setting on right. And we can't change performance settings like before such as to use 2-cores. My quick settings widget is not working either.
I just updated, and I'm already missing my 'old tablet'.

Man i used to love this tablet a lot! It's a bit ruined now.
I still think NVIDIA should release smaller updates to better the layout and options. The notification bar is so narrow, it feels like I'm using my phone. Though, I don't have high hopes given how much time it took for this update. :fingers-crossed:
just a heads up System boot and recovery images have been pulled and test for Lollipop and uploaded to server. Now to work on updating the super tool to version 3.0 Lollipop

this update is a joke, now the tablet feels like a cheap **** with crappy graphics chip.. why the hell did they released if its gonna lag so badly ? if they said this update dont come because of this then i would be ok... now games that didnt lag before like clash of clans lags.. its like micro freeze what the hel lis this nonsense ? do i have to buy a new tablet now ? and i have a weird battery bug, it goes from 100% backwards to like 97% and below even if it says its charging with cable in....

The stylus recognition has improved immeasurably ,and thats the only positive thing that i can say about the update.
I'm going to try clearing out all the app caches or reinstall my apps. This is so much slower than before, and it commonly freezes up for a few seconds...especially when switching apps.
Before, we could control our processor to save battery by reducing the number of cores used. That option is gone completely.
I see no noticeable upside to the lollipop update.

Vibrate actually u can access the performance option its just hidden from us, check this thread how to access it.. for me it doesnt help 2 cores or 4 cores 30fps limit or 60.. still lags even basic games

Neat app but aside from the fact it's non native, its just too many steps to enable what I want. So I won't end up using it.

Before everyone trashes this update, someone should try a full factory reset... I've fixed many issues with previous updates by doing this, and with an update this big, I'd suspect it could help.

EMUI 5 (update and downgrade) for Chinese Honor 8

Open Hicare and click on update, apply and go to settings and open updater.
To downgrade: Install HiSuite in Pc. Downgrade through pc.

My first observations after upgrade:
- system is smooth and fast, but the fact is that it was such before upgrade as well;
- smart battery saving leave you less options as before; you can't use it with screen off time adjustment any more; my impression is that with no battery saving you achieve less uptime than before and with smart battery the same as before but with more restrictions;
- overall color specter moved toward blue and a lot of white; light color letters on white background are sometimes difficult to read;
- safetynet (indicator of secure applications like Android Pay and Pokemon) fails wit the last upgrade; it passed with MM and first N upgrade 336;
- still no trace of wifi calling.
Camera is subject to more deep and demanding analyze which may follow latter.
Overall I'll be glad to get safetynet back and wifi calling sometimes soon.

other guy had al10, he did what i did, u have to be on the latest software, and then register on hicare
I also upgraded to 5.0 and then I did a factory reset to set all from the beginning...It seems to me that battery runs out a bit faster (first thoughts) and I agree with all written before this post....
I fell in love with new quick tools panel quickly, so dont feel about downgrading so far))
I will wait till our russian coleagues make up a clean EMUI 5.0 (without bloat and perhaps with some customizations) as they did for 4.1 (author: greatslon at 4pda)
Or maybe our honor devs will give us some cure in new builds...
Got a new upgrade yesterday, the version B368.
This time the change log is in Chinese so I have no idea what it is about. At least it still works fine, no complain so far

It says something like:
This update optimizes the system and stability and makes the phone run more smooth. It repairs Taobao app text dialog box on order to prevent blocking input method. It also repairs the problem that call recording can’t add the specific contact. Further, the problems that outgoing call can’t be placed and phone can’t be connected to WIFI are fixed as well. Removed error that Talkback can’t be used. Fixed HuaweiShare autolaunch after WIFI download rate is reduced. Fixed issues with 123006?? and banking (shopping??) apps like Taobao. Power consumption is optimized in order to extend battery life. Screen brightness parameters optimization.
The translate is result of mutual efforts of me and GoogleTranslate and it is far from perfect.
My first impressions after update:
The system is stable and ready for the transition from beta to the production version. It is responsive, smooth and fast. No substantial deficiencies could be detected. There are still some glitches that should be improved though:
1. In order to make the outlook white as a snow (combined with sea blue) the producer made some application text hard to read (white on the bright)
2. Using the power saving mode gives you insane 6 hours of SOT. But the mode fixes screen on when passive to 30 secs time and it can't be adjusted. What could be really annoying in some situations. I would have easily sacrificed 1 hour of SOT if I had option to turn off the screen manually.
3. SafetyNet (connected with payment and other safety apps) fails after every upgrade. Thankfully so far I had it back in a few days and I hope that it will happen this time too. I think that the failure is connected to beta status of the upgrade: Google might consider upgrade as a test version of the system (safe applications don't work on the rooted phone, custom recovery, unlocked bootloader or test versions of the system). I don't understand the mechanism on which the functionality suddenly returns: is it by Huawei's intervention, Google app upgrade or simply recognizing the upgrade as real, not test version.
Finally, there is an improved custom ROM for AL10 and AL00 (HRT-Kangvip) if someone with rooted phone wanna try: http://club.huawei.com/thread-11821416-1-1.html (use GoogleTranslate).

I am in China, I already got 3 updates since I bought it (3 weeks ago).
That's why I can't really compare with marshmallow as I didn't use it much.
I just found out they still didn't fix the bug when we use the fingerprint to slide photos in the gallery. It works but it's not as smooth as before.

PUBG Mobile on essential

Has anyone else here played this game on the essential phone? I have a couple of strange glitches. I initially thought they were associated to my original faulty device, but after receiving my warranty replacement that is not faulty the same issues still persist on PUBG Mobile. So I am assuming it's something with this phone in general.
First glitch is some artifacting during the loading screen on the notch end of the phone. I am assuming this is because of the screen resizing to accommodate for the notch. It seems like it starts to attempt to resize the screen a few times in a row every once in a while resulting in what looks like some screen glitching. I've noticed this in other apps while using them too like chrome and OfferUp. Looks like every once in a while the app suddenly attempts to resize back to full screen mode for a split second, then immediately shrinks back down again to cut out the notch area.
Other issue is while using both fingers on the screen at the same time. Moving while aiming for instance it will spin my character around a little bit.
Doesn't display any of this behavior on any other phones I've ever had. I already contacted the publisher of the game but Wondering if anyone else has these issues and knows a workaround.

Strange, I don't at all. I full wiped and flashed from fastboot though. Did you ota?
So you still have the graphical glitches?
How do I get P?
Also is it possible to force games and other apps to utilize the full screen pace around the notch? As much as I don't like apple I do notice in YouTube videos that it does fully utilize the notch area on the iPhone X.
Alright nevermind found the settings in developer options from YouTube video to force all apps to use the notch area.

I flashed the ota through adb, did not factory reset though. I think the issue is involving the multi touch that was broken in and 8.1, and I don't think Google has fixed the issue

Like I said before, I flashed the full fastboot file, not just the ota. It is fixed completely. You could try that.
Yes! God, I thought I was the only one with the multi touch issue..but I'm too lazy and stupid to get P so I suppose I'm out of luck.
There's a fix for the multi touch glitch bug. It's a magisk module called "Pixel 8.1 multi-touch fix".
Let me warn you, DO NOT install it if you are on the stock essential ROM, because it will fail to boot. It is only safe on AOSP based ROMs. I can only vouch for myself that it works flawlessly with lineage. If you are on stock ROM you'll have to wait until essential releases a fix.
I just read up on it a little. Apparently it's an issue with all phones running 8.1.0 Oreo witch I did not know. My original essential PH1 was faulty, kept crashing and rebooting so I thought this was part of the faulty device.
Looks like they plan to release a fix in June security update.

The difference is insane right? Night and day. Even if there were any bugs, which I haven't noticed any, I still wouldn't be able to go back I don't think.
Way smoother, all touch bugs fixed, better battery life... What's not to like?

Yep, everything is great for a dev preview. I fixed my PUBG, by just uninstalling, then reinstalling the game. Runs flawlessly
