[Q] Canadian SGH-i337m - Confused about which modem I need... - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hello,
I was wondering if I had the latest + most recommended radio/modem installed to my device; and also, where I could "tune in" to keep an eye on newer and better releases.
I noticed a few threads about radios and modems, and none of them even mention this MK6 modem... Also, they all seem to be ATT specific.
Anways, I am currently using "Baseband Version: I337MVLUEMK6"; should I look into changing?
Thanks!

You are running 4.3 with that modem. I think you can unlock your phone using the dial pad with that version. If you upgrade to a newer version then it is fairly locked down for tinkering and Knox enabled. If it works for you keep it. So unlock your phone 1st if need be.

Youre obviously pretty new to this. Basically MK6 is just a rom firmare update from the one before it. Every time samsung releases an update like 4.4.3 it changes that number letter thing. So if you pick any rom on the forum and you notice a fewdsyd later yhat person has updated the rom from 4.4.3 to 4.4.4 that number will change. Anyways its not too important. I suggest Goldfinger in the android development (regular development not original). Its a good one to start off with. Make sure during install to chose the correct phone. For example im canadian so I pick l337m otherwise it wont work right. Make sure if you chose a different rom than one designed for l337m that you download and flash a l337m kernal after youve installed and booted up the rom. I mean install and let the new rom boot to the setup screen. Then reboot into twrp and flash the l337m kernel of your choice. If you read through the goldfinger posters thread theres a kernel tool link. Its cool because it has all the kernels in one file. Just make sure u download the l337m version of the kernel tool. I hope that helps....also some roms wont connect your data and youll have to set up your apn yourself. I find sometimes I have to set up my rogers apn manually. Amyways now im probably confusing you lol. The unified section has roms that work on all phones or you can download roms like goldfinger that let you choose the phone youre using. Ok so to answer uour question the modem type just refers to the firmware the rom is built on. Haha

Actually, I'm already unlocked + rooted... And running GoldenEye 41 VJUGNH2 @ Android 4.4.2
In fact, I was getting all kinds of data drops and other basic function fails until i switched from AMG1 (I THINK!) to MK6 via Odin desktop.
At this time, everything is working fine... I just wanted to make sure it was running optimally. And apparently it's not, if I'm using a 4.3 radio/modem with a 4.4.x rom...
And also, when installing a new ROM, I've only ever noticed changes in kernel, build number, android version, and ROM version; never Baseband version.
I guess I'll double check the ROM threads, maybe I just missed a part about them being bundled with new Basebands...
Thanks folks!
/update
I flashed NC1, seemed to be the latest one... Everything OK for now.

[Q] Some fairly Noob Clarifications (TWRP/CWM/MDL Related)

Purchased my S4 at launch, only rooted it and never really got around to tweaking it much. It has slowed down a bit so now is the time.
I'm on MDL, stock 4.2.2, and rooted with TWRP 2.5.0.2 On to the questions/clarifications, hopefully these aren't egregious. I know the info is out there but for actually finding specific information, the xda forums are a bit overwhelming and sometimes conflicting...
1) Recovery - Latest/preferred recovery for the s4 (on MDL) with auto-loki baked in? Are any of the latest versions of TWRP/CWM dangerous/incompatible or can I just install the latest/greatest with ROM Installers and go from there?
2) Modem - Flashing an updated modem, regardless of ROM/OS # should not break anything and/or lock down the bootloader any more so than it already is at MDL, correct? Updating the baseband will have no effect on the build # and thus loki is still and option (versus safestrap)? Preferred modem at this time? (ATT, SF Bay Area)
3) ROMS - Any ROM, followed by loki patch or flashed via an auto-loki capable recovery should be fine, correct? Is a ROM specifically built for safestrap applications and thus would not work with MDL, or are ROMs noted as being safestrap ready just able to be used via safestrap, but loki as well?
4) Hard to keep track of all the ROMs and the builds and branches etc - Can anyone point me in the right direction of either a) the latest stock touch-wiz 4.4.4 ROM that can be flashed over MDL without essentially updating past MDL? b) the best/most recent pure google (Play Store S4 Edition) ROM, same story with not breaking MDL?
Again, I apologize I am sure the info is all buried in here somewhere, it just gets to a point where pointed questions rather than multiple 500+ post threads are hopefully less likely to brick my phone. Ideally I just want to get on the latest software (and enable screen casting, for one). Assuming it comes quick enough, once I get this process down I will probably make the jump to 5.0 when it is ready, anticipate a couple months? Who knows.
Thanks, much appreciated.

I will try to help with a few of these questions, but others I am not familiar with very much. On that note DO NOT update your bootloader!!! It will be locked down further and Loki will NOT WORK. And you could NOT flash any kernels with safestrap. So with safestrap ONLY the stock kernel can be used. Now on to your questions...
1) I am using TWRP 8.1 if I remember correctly. You can find it in the Original Android Development section. It does NOT Auto Loki, so keep the loki-doki flashable zip on your sdcard OR use Roms that already have/use the boot.Loki kernels like ShoStock-i 8.1
2) Modem flashing will NOT lock anything up further as far as the bootloader. You can flash ANY or ALL of them from my modem thread. See which works BEST FOR YOU in YOUR AREA. I am in So Cal and the best for me has been either MDL. But I have and do test ALL of them. You can always flash back to whichever one works best for you.
3.) Like I said I use ShoStock-i 8.1 because it has and does EVERYTHING I need my phone to do and does it without any issues. I have NOT tried to use a Safestrap modified ROM so I have very little experience with that. Normally most devs will have two separate versions, one for safestrap compatible and one for us without safestrap. ShoStock-i is already built with Loki in the kernel so you do not NEED to flash Loki-Doki patch.
4) there are NO Touchwiz 4.4.4 Stock Roms for ATT yet. But I did try out one of the Touchwiz 4.4.4 T-Mobile based Roms and it worked perfectly. You can either get it from the ATT forums and I believe it is already lokified, or get it from the T-Mobile forum and make sure to flash Loki-Doki patch before booting up phone after flashing the ROM. Again the will NOT update your bootloader past your MDL bootloader, so you are good as you are with no worries. By the way on ShoStock-i 8.1 the screen casting to Chromecast works PERFECTLY without having to flash any other .apk's or mess with ANYTHING
This is the exact same boat I'm in. Trying to track down the answers as well. Will keep an eye here as well to watch for answers.
awesome reply thanks RockRatt, that just about covers it. I will maybe give the ShoStock ROM a go and see how I like it. As long as all the normal features are working fine, I should be good.
One last thing I forgot - Odin. I have the stock odin firmware files from when my phone was new (The MDL package). As long as I dont update the bootloader, I should be able to Odin back to the brand new in box state should something go awry or not dig the other ROMs, correct?
Thanks again,

Yep. Just don't update the bootloader...So no flashing newer firmware that contains the bootloader files. Most if not all custom Roms do not have the bootloader files in them. So no problem flashing back to MDL stock if the need never arises. I still in fact have the original MDB bootloader installed that came with the phone before the MDL firmware update.

INTRO
Hey guys. I'm french Canadian (please understand my bad written )
and thanks to the phone I choosed (s5 active g870w telus)
I'm becoming pretty much bilingual I've checked all over
around The Web and over this forum. And can't find an accurate
answer . I know I picked the wrong phone for rooting but
as a construction worker it was a good compromise.
DONE AND SEARCHED
My Samsung Galaxy s5 Active g870w from Telus
is still on 4.4.2 since there is no and there will not be
any update for a while.
I managed to used the g900w8 version of
Chain fire auto root method using Odin 3.09
to get roots.
I have also succès to flash Unity 2.0.1 rom.
So far I figured that my version can count as
the Canadian version of the s5 small g900w8. (I may be wrong)
I found a stock Firmware (that accualy make my
lies in russian ) Wich I used a lot lately due to all
my soft brick.
My goal is to be able to upgrade to a nice custom rom
on lollipop. I was hoping Fusion. And as for the recovery
TWRP would be my choice if it was possible.
Now I am stuck trying to install TWRP. I have followed
multiple guide. I have tried to install from TWRP manager
the version 2.8.6.0 klte. I have tried 3 times and after the app
installation I tried to reboot to recovery using Quick boot,
i always end up in Odin mode.
I then tried to install using Odin flashing the same version
Downloaded from TWRP.me site. Then it let me load into
my stock version. Then if I try to reboot in recovery
it still stock.
I even tried to use safestrap both version at&t and Verizon
and both soft bricked me.
I have read or scan about every thread and none talk about
S5 a g870w. Beside the att version Wich are locked.
QUESTIONS
My Questions and I really beg for answers even if
You have only 1 answer.
1- Is my phone g870w compatible g900w8?
2-is it compatible to any other versions?
3-when looking should I only look for Canadian version or I can also
use either g870 from at&t,Verizon or international. Or I look for
International g900. Since I guess my bootloader is unlocked .
4- Since only at&t and Verizon are supposed to be lock I guess
I can't use safestrap... so are TWRP and CWM the only options?
5- Can someone help me troubleshoot my installations. ?
6- After I install my recovery a a g870w on kitkat 4.4.2
Should I be able to flash lollipop base custom rom?
7- Is it possible that there is no option for me beside
Unity and stock rom.
BOUNTY
It might not be much but I offer a 20$ minimum bounty for who ever
take me outta this non ending bulls*"t.
Thanks guys. And please I swear I have search and read a lot
just Google my model number and you'll always end up on me
Searching and I seems to be the only one g870w talking about
recovery or custom rom. All I found is how to root...
Jon
1- Is my phone g870w compatible g900w8?
No, it is different flashing anything that isn't designed for your exact model number ( even the AT&T ones which are one letter different) won't work.
2-is it compatible to any other versions?
No, only firmwares for your exact phone will work without someone modifying something specific for you.
3-when looking should I only look for Canadian version or I can also
use either g870 from at&t,Verizon or international. Or I look for
International g900. Since I guess my bootloader is unlocked .
Flashing any other model number but your own risks bootloop/bricking as they although look similar can have different firmware partitions amongst other things.
4- Since only at&t and Verizon are supposed to be lock I guess
I can't use safestrap... so are TWRP and CWM the only options?
If someone can have a look at TWRP is possible that they can make a version work for you: ideally I would say with it being so difficult as so few have your model I would go to stock: root and use xposed, and leave the rest.
5- Can someone help me troubleshoot my installations. ?
Sure, happy to help but don't know how much can help when you are trying firmwares for different versions.
6- After I install my recovery a a g870w on kitkat 4.4.2
Should I be able to flash lollipop base custom rom?
Unless someone has made I've for your model type I doubt it.
7- Is it possible that there is no option for me beside
Unity and stock rom.
Yeah unfortunately this is quite likely.
thanks for taking the time.
Now I'll go private with you for personal things.
but before maybe few extra questions will help the very few others in
the same painful situation.
about compatibility you answered no.
What made me search so bad is that I've seen
other members(g870a) claiming they we're using
g900 roms I'll search for a link.
-Does it mean even tho its risky or
it means that American version have more luck ?
-am I still able to use a recovery like safestrap?
-can I hang myself?
- and if I'd like to have TWRP and a know custom rom
would it be a lot of works for Des.
Is it "askable" are some working for money?
I hate stuck to death I miss my note 3 like crazy. .. damn

Help on some doubts and advice

Hi Guys!
Need some help on this thing, hope someone can clear some doubts and give me some advice too... The thins is this, I used to have a Samsung Captivate Galaxy S (Yes, hard to believe I squeeze that thing to the last drop LOL, I flashed SlimRom, wich was a pretty light ROM I think, and keep it as clean as possible always), Im from Mexico, and also Im that type of guy marketing doesnt make hard effect on me... anyway, recently a co-worker offered me this new one, at a very good price, almost brand new, so I got it.
As you can figured it out, It is a long time now since I made my last flashes, upgrades, etc... And now I want to do it again, but if possible I would like to do it the right way.
Here are my S4 settings:
Soft Version: LV720VPUFNG2
Model: SPH-L720
Android: 4.4.2
Baseband Version: L720VPUFNG2
Already Rooted and I've already installed TWRP Ver: 2.8.4.0
I got it already SIm Unlocked.
My Career Network is GSM.
The main reason I want to flash a ROM is to get rid of all the crap Samsung installs, I would like to install a light-weight (Lollipop if possible) but a with all the functions that I aleady have, like Air gesture, Screen Mirroring, Bluetooth, Wifi, etc...
So I would really appreciate if someone can advice me with one good, light-weight-clean ROM, Lollipop if possible... ( I remember back when I was flashing Captivate, SlimROMS where something like Im looking now)
Also, If a make backup before flashing and if I got problems while flashing, By reverting to my backup, Would I have it again working like it was? I mean modem, bootloader, etc.?
My main concern is to be able to back if I have a not-working flash, as this is my new and only cellphone.
Many Thanks in advance. BTW, Hope my english is understandable
No one? :/ Well, I'll keep it more simple lol
If I flash some ROM, I would have the same baseband/modem I already have right?
So if I flash for example, Exodus ROM, I'll end up with Android 5.1.1(I think thats the last one of that ROM) but keeping my baseband as it is now, NG2.
It Should work?
Please I really appreciate if someone can just clear this doubts before I proceed.
Technically speaking, Yes. You should be able to keep your baseband and modem since you're not flashing anything like that over odin, or if the ROM file itself isn't programmed to do such things.

Thanks for your answer man, and just for the last question, Do you know where I can find Stock ROMS, baseband and modems? (In case I need them)
I found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2303917
But It looks like is not truly updated, for example I can't find my baseband version in it.
Btw, Do you know if my modem NG2? Its the last one or not? I've been searching for that info too, but can't find anything updated that I can trust.
Many thanks in advance.

This is for stock firmware's; this means it's an all-in-one stock rom that has the baseband, kernel and modem etc. all inside a single rom file.
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SPH-L720/SPR/
For latest info on your system check this
http://support.sprint.com/support/a...ServiceAdvisory_542_GKB51952-dvc7300002prd#!/
As for individual files like just single modems, kernels and basebands just search here. You'll find them, search and google are your friend. And no NG2 is no't the latest, OH1 is.

Greetings from Mexico

A total newbie flasher needs help

Hi.. I'm in way over my head trying to install a more debloated Rom than the original stock. Unfortunately I didn't succeed very well.
I tried two different ROMS and both of them turned the Sim off and on every second or so. Lots of *pling* noises followed by a message that the Sim card was or wasn't present. It changed so much back and forth that I didn't even get a chance to enter the pin. I belive it is because of some combabillity issues between the rom and baseband/radio version
This lead me to the question: How do I know what rom and baseband would be the most suited for me? I'm living in Denmark (nordic country), but I simply can't figure what rom that is compatible with what baseband.
Boot into Odin mode and verify the model number. Then go to Sammobile.com, download a rom for your country, and install it with Odin.
Did you buy the phone in the country where it is being used?

Sorry if what I'm asking is obvious, but when I install a custom rom, I also need to make sure I install a compatible radio for my area, right?
Sammobile is only stock ROMS, right? And I'm trying to debloat her phone. So when installing a custom rom from this forum and either the reception is bad, it doesn't register Sim card properly or the like.. It might be because I need another baseband than the one that came with the rom right? And what do I need to look for in that regard?
Sorry, but I find it pretty complicated.
I recommend flashing a completely stock ROM, set it up, and make sure everything is working properly. If it doesn't work properly on a stock ROM, it is unlikely it will work properly on a custom ROM.
I find it best to run the latest bootloader and modem regardless of which ROM will be used with the phone.
Problems can sometimes occur when flashing current ROMs over old bootloaders and modems.

Thank you for the already helpful reply.
The thing you say about always flashing newest modem regardless of rom, is very helpful. I didnt even know you could do that. But my problem persist:
I already flashed back to stock, and it runs fine. SO far so good. The problem is that out of 16 GB, the bloatware is justing taking up to much space. But the last two rom I tried both had problems recognising the SIM card (toggled present/not present all the time).
Thats not the case on stock.. So how do I find the proper modem for my phone to use with a custom rom?
I keep seeing a link to sammobile, but all I can find is the bloated stock rom (or I dont know what to look for). Can I grab just the modem somewhere?
When installing a custom rom, it changes the current modem right? AFAIK I have to flash the proper modem afterwards, right?
And therein lies my problem: I dont know how to find the most suited one for my country (which is denmark). And the one that comes with the roms seems to be the wrong ones.
PS: A follow up question: Kernel and baseband/radio/modem is not the same, right? The kernel is not region specific, as the baseband/radio/modem, right?

Custom ROMs can't change your modem, they can't write to those partitions.
In other words, your modem will be the same no matter what. The only way to change it is to flash the appropriate modem files or an actual stock ROM.
SO with the stock rom working now, the modem/rom combination would not be the culprit if something doesnt work afterwards?
What could have been the issue with the sim card connecting and disconnecting every second on the other rom I tried? (Iperium/Imperial something)

What I said is that a custom ROM can't change your modem. But that doesn't mean it can't be affected by your modem.
You may want to read Imperium ROM's install instructions very carefully, cuz I'm pretty sure you missed something important.
Doh.. You might be right.. Ill try flashing the tar files in Odin.
But I just recently got my phone to behave when connecting on Odin.. It also connected back and forth all the time. Putting a USB hub in the middle solved it though (and made it possible to revert to stock). Any idea wht that was about? I reckon either some driver or USB power problem? But Im really fumbling understanding it all, and when it acts up at the same time, even the most simple problems can be hard to see through (because there is always the uncertainty that I misunderstood something basic)..
Just having this conversation helped me understand a lot better how the ROMs and modem is connected (or more precise: How they are not).
And I actually may have had the right baseband all along (Nordic Countries). I will know when I tried flashing the rom again.
Thank you very much
It doesn't matter where you are from, the phone should work with any baseband in any country.
The thing is that some ROMs (like Imperium here) may require a different modem to function properly. In this case, it may require the PG1 modem (listed in the Imperium thread) to solve your problems.
Before flashing a stock ROM, confirm the model # in download mode.
If you want a debloated stock ROM, you could flash a stock ROM, flash TWRP recopvery, flash supersu for root, and use Titanium Backup to freeze or uninstall apps.
So right now I tried flashing the Resurrection Remix ROM, but it wont make any calls (a voice just says that the number cant be reached, even though I know the numbers exist). What could be the case there?
The modem and bootloader may be too old.
can it also be to new?
I have consulted the below site several times, but the link is dead to the page where I can look up what modem to use.
Can someone please point me in the right direction of which to use?

What modem should I choose for my phone? Living in Denamrk and trying with the ressurection remix rom? I tried 3 different of the modems starting with XX but all have the same problem: I cant make any calls. It just says that "there isnt any members on the selected number".
Making calls works fine on stock rom

The ones linked in the Imperium ROM thread are the newest.
And no, it can't be too new.
It's probably something related to your phone model not being fully supported by the ROM.
JDCTeam ROMs should work, because they support a wide range of S4 models.
I got stock rom to work (again again)
And now I managed to flash the JDC Team you recommended and still having the baseband from the stock rom (Which were able to make calls)
But whatyaknow.. I STILL cant make outgoing calls on the custom roms! What in the world can be the problem? I spent the whole day on this.
.. I should be able to make outgoing calls without flashing Gapps, right?
Yes, you should be able to make calls without gapps.
You flashed the latest stock rom and confirmed everything works?
You confirmed the model number in download mode?

Need help with a galaxy s4 gt-i9505

Hi everyone,
just a long-time forum-lurker in the dark here, now I'm here asking for help to restore my galaxy s4.
Here's the story:
gt-i9505 no brand, italian official firmware 4.4.4 (kitkat), never updated, only used towelroot to gain rood adn unistall couple of unused apps.
everything worked fine
Then i decided to upgrade to lollipop.
downloaded last samsung lollipop rom for my phone from sammobile, made a full backup via TWRP Recovery, and installed lollipop via Odin.
Then the nightmare begun :
1st problem, no modem, no connection, only wifi, i restored EFS, still not working, reinstalled modem via odin and then i got my imei and connection again.
2) think i've tried to change the rom to a custom downloaded here (i don't even remember the name), then i tried couple other roms.
this as far as i remember
Now the phone has a samsung original lollipop rom, wifi won't turn on, data not working, knox status is obviously altered (so i cannot restore it via kies or whatever the software name is now) BUT It overheats a lot after few minutes and i'm forced to shut it off to not damage it.
I'd like to restore it to a full working condition, i think i've messed up with bootloaders, modems and roms from different android versions.
can anyone help ?
Current status is
model : gt-i9505

Hey, @dokrobei
Take a look on my Guide.
You need the guide clean install from the scratch. Please read it carefully till the end. There avaible links with all necessary stuff like modem/bootloaders/stock rom-firmware/recommend customs roms etc.
Hi @Retrial, thanks for the answer..
I've managed to reinstall stock KitKat 4.4.2 and working modem drivers, following another tutorial here. Now Wi-Fi, 3g and bt works fine, BUT the phone overheats a lot. It's not a battery problem and sure it's software related 'cause it wasn't like this before my stupid first attempt to upgrade to lollipop.
I've searched the forum for the overtheating near the flash zone problem, some say that is a microsd problem (wich I removed), some other that's a battery problem (wich is not in my case).
Do you think I should start from scratch again following your guide? IHow do I know wich modem / bootloader is right for my phone? I think the problem is there, maybe wrong modem version..

First of all there is no need to still be on KitKat...a lot of apps don't support Kitkat nowdays...and is outdated.
I will recommend first to proper upgrade to Lollipop stock and then use some of the latest android Pie Custom JDC Roms by following my complete guide. As I said above there is a full guide with links and very well explained steps. The latest Firmware for our S4 i9505 is QK1 - No matter which country you will choose, and it's recommened to have the latest. Just read it carefully till the end and check the asterisks.
The overheating it may be no compatible Modem/Bootloader since you messed up with Lollipop. To check what Modem and Bootloder you can simply install "Device HW Info" or "Phone Info" app and check.
Let me know how it goes, and if you have any question or problem feel free to ask. Good Luck :fingers-crossed:

After every flash the device become hot. Let the rom settle for a while.
If you have PK2 Firmware then you need PK2 Modem and Bootloader. So no, don't try other modem/bootloader.

I flashed it last night and checked if it was working this morning. I'm sure the high temps are not related to the usage or to the battery. It become hot eachtime i turn on wifi. Havent tried with data but I think it will be the same thing.
