Nexus player forces me to use phone keyboard - Nexus Player Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

alright here's the problem I'm having my Nexus player keeps trying to connect to my neighbors free WiFi where you have to log in as a guest the Nexus player keeps signing me out of my network so I get disconnected from time to time it's been really annoying and this time when I try to connect to my router its asking for a passcode and its asking for me to use my phone for the keyboard which I can't use my phone if the Nexus player is not connected to my network so looks like I'm SOL I've tried rebooting the Nexus player and I still can't get the onscreen keyboard to type in the password for my network do you guys have any ideas is this a bug or a glitch or am I just missing something here's a screenshot of the menu asking me to use my phone keyboard

Hmmmm. Strange.
Is this during the initial setup? Are you able to get to the settings menu? If so, I noticed in there that there's an option for what to use as the keyboard input, and among the options are the Nexus Player remote control, or something like "virtual keyboard" or something. Perhaps the "virtual keyboard" (or whatever it's called) option is selected for some reason, and this corresponds to using your phone for input?

That is strange. If I turn the phone app off my on screen keyboard pops back up for me. Maybe it is some kind of glitch.

Have you set the input method to leanback in settings using the included remote?

for anyone wondering
here is app for android phones to make use of virtual keyboard on nexus player: com.google.android.tv.remote (search on google play)

go to settings > preferences > keyboard and the select keyboard as "leanback keyboard". This will force the inbuilt keyboard to popup again.

Resolution?
Hello All,
Was this ever resolved? I am having the same issue. However, even my keyboard input via the Android TV App won't work with the Nexus player. Therefore, it is forcing me to use the phone keyboard, but the phone keyboard will not work.
With the latest Nexus Player update, the keyboard settings are also very limited and cannot be adjusted.

The old resolution won't work with Oreo since the Leanback keyboard was removed. Here's one solution:

In my case I installed the old Leanback keyboard and disabled Gboard since I'm using a different remote (the Amazon Fire TV remote) which doesn't work with the Oreo keyboard (Gboard). The APK is here in case you'd like it:

Possible hardware keyboard fix for Epic.

If this has been posted before please delete, but I believe I have solved my issue with the physical keyboard missing keys. I turned off all the software keyboards and swype it seems to have done the trick.
Problem is I have to change it everytime I switch batteries. Is there a way to do thi?

Yes, I've read that swype (enabled) is most likely the culprit.

Bingo, it can be annoying at times. When typing long emails and texts, be sure to go back and proofread what you just typed (good practice anyway). Turning off swype did seem to help a bit.

would make it a software issue then..not hardware =D good to know
I was able to type several paragraphs with all the soft keyboards except for Swype disabled, and I don't have the missing key issue anymore. I simply disabled the Samsung and Android keyboards. I use Swype way too much to disable it.

I use keyboard manager to help with this...
Install keyboard manager along with touchpal from market free (completely).
I have Swype enable and have it set as my portrait keyboard
Then when I switch to landscape keyboard manager services changes my kb to touchpal in a fraction of a second without any interaction.
What awesome about touch pal is that it offers some of the best spelling correction word prediction with our hardware keyboards. Takes a while to get used to but by far is the best solution for me as not only does it fix the random keydrops but it also spell checks and suggests words on the fly.
I was using the Windows Mobile Version for a long time before changing to android, but absolutely love Swype for portrait one handed.
In a previous post I made I pointed out that the lag I found to be software and not hardware... if you long press on many letters you will get a popup instead of repeat keys these seem to be the cause of the drops, after using touchpal, if you long press a letter it quickly repeats.

Internet access to check for updates, record audio is for voice to text and contacts im not sure about but i think its for autocomplete to add to the dictionary. Check out Swype permissions same read contact data is there...
Trust me I have been using CooTek products for years they are a reputable company... Chinese or not.
PS you could try with another keyboard but I think the key is touchpal, all i can say is if the keyboard your using gets rid of the OS default popup that happens when you long press on a key it should work. I wish there was a dev that could just figure out how to disable this all together as it happens when there are no soft keyboards active,,, I am sure this is the cause to our missed keys try ee or oo in words 7/10 times it will miss if you are fast this is because its trying to determine the length of time the key was pressed to display the box of options.
I can't get keyboard manager to recognize touchpal as an option...any ideas?
NM, have to play with the actual system settings first

Jellybean keyboard input issues

Sorry for posting here but it is only place I can as it's my first post.
So I've turned to XDA as I thought I would bring my TF101 into teh world of JellyBean.
Following the excellent guides on here I easily rooted and flashed the thing with Team EOS Jellybean ROM.
Went like a dream and a big thank you to the people who have invested so much time and effort.
I have a strange issue though:
Type in the address bar of the browser or in a Tapatalk post the keyboard pops up
Type one letter and it minimises.
I touch to type again and it appears
I can only type a few letters (sometimes only one) before it minimises again
this continues ..
The keyboard is basically unusable. Anyone had a similar issue?
Sounds like you are using the TeamEOS 4 ROM.
From TimDuru's page is notes:
- Default AOSP Soft keyboard crashing if using auto-suggestion
=> workaround: Go to the keyboard settings and change to Auto-correction off + Show correction suggestions:always hide.
You can also fallback to gapps 20121229 (no swipe feature with that version though)
See here for more issues and workarounds: http://public.timduru.org/Android/tf101/eos4/

I have same kind of problem but with Opera mobile browser. Text input in address bar works fine but input for any other input boxes in websites is pain in the ass. I manage to write one or two letter for example in login screen when keyboard vanished. That is strange since Opera uses its own keyboard layout.

"Old" Swype keyboard on Nexus 4?

hi all. just got a nexus 4. coming from tmobile G2. the G2 had embedded swype keyboard which i loved. nexus 4 doesn't have that. so i installed swype app from play store. while this swype is nice, it doesn't automatically remember the words that i type that are not in the swype dictionary (like curses and such). i have to click "add to dictionary" after each word that it doesn't recognize.
the question i have: is there a way to get the "old" swype back or perhaps somehow enable automatic memorization of the words on this one? perhaps anyone has other suggestions for similar keyboards?
thank you

You can make swype automatically remember words.
In swype settings go to My Words -> Change Dictionary Behavior and then choose "Allow swype to automatically add words to my dictionary".

The default Google Keyboard supports swipe to type. It is very similar to Swype although maybe not quite as full featured. I find the stock keyboard works quite well.

i think its locked because my phone is not rooted yet and thats why i can't back this app up. i was going to root my phone today and since i can't back it up i may lose it from the phone. if i have to install it again, will they charge me for it the second time or since i paid for it i will be able to get it free? thanks.
Once you paid for it every device you sign on to the play store allows you to download it free. So any device running any ROM linked to you gmail account

Swype and swiftkey have dictionary cloud sync. That's a very nice feature for those who have 2 or more android devices.
i paid 99 cents for it so not too bad of an investment. love the keyboard, but i wish that when i disable automatic correction i would still be able to have it add words automatically. seems like it only does that when the auto correction is enabled.

Slide Aside, Q Slide and q memo. Good work LG!

Hello guys! The first thing that positively surprised me the first time I used my gpad was the improvement given by LG software.
In particular Slide Aside(too freeze an app) Q Slide (kind of multi windows experience) and quick memo are very good. How can I the same feature on other devices (like my galaxy s4, where samsung software are only garbage).
Any third part software?
Thanks

I don't know... I personally find slide aside and qslide kind of worthless. What I find useful is the built in samba server over wifi - now that's useful.
not all the program have a real resume function, so I need to find something similar for my smart phone. It's all depending on a how you use the phone
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
I guess I'm not clear how using qslide is all that much different than holding home and switching tasks that way. I mean I guess qslide may prevent the garbage collector from killing an app before you are ready... but I've never seen that be an issue in any practical use since it doesn't clean up right away.
Now, one thing that I stumbled upon today that is really nice is when you copy text, a widget comes out with all of your recent copy's! Now That is Really Handy! Now, how to get back to it once it disappears...

Guess it's just on the stock rom. I'm using mahdi-rom and its not an option. Guess I could install am app to that, if I need it.
I'm sure there are decent apps out there, I was just impressed that LG would include something so useful that does require some technical knowledge. It requires you to \\<ip> and login with a provided username/pw.

Hello to all! Do you know any apk (module) that is the same the QSlide of LG G Pad?

Mod to put the Cast tile back into the quick settings menu?

I'd really like to have the Cast tile back in the quick settings menu.
Does anyone know of a mod that achieves that?
The connection options offered by Samsung are too Samsung-centric. I don't own a Samsung smart TV or a Samsung hub and I don't plan on buying one in the near future.
I have a Chromecast that I use for screen mirroring and am used to being able to connect without using the Chromecast app on my HTC via HTC Quick Connect (which is available in quick settings and allows for a myriad of different connection types).
A port of the HTC Quick Connect function would also be a great option if that's possible (in quick settings).

You "don't" need quick connect for chrome cast, I have the Chromcast dongle and all you need
to do is either open your Chrome browser or go to the play store and get the Chromecast app by
"google" and use that for casting.
Either way the Chromcast dongle works perfectly with the S7 Edge.

Thanks for both of your replies.
Yes, the Chromecast dongle works fine with the S7 Edge and the Chromecast app.
However, I would prefer not to have to walk through the steps that are necessary to connect to the Chromecast using the app. That's why I asked whether there is a mod available that puts the functionality to connect to the Chromecast app back into quick settings.
I don't particularly care whether the mod in question changes Quick Connect or adds the Cast tile back into quick settings..
I also would like the cast tile in the notification panel back, after owning a nexus and mirror my screen on my chromecast with 1 click was awesome for showing my family different things without needing to find some specific app to do it.

I understand that, what you did will allow the tile to be placed in the quick launch but it still requires the second step of selecting cast screen right? I'm trying to figure out a way to use tasker to automate the whole processes. The only method I have that kind of works is to use autoinput to select the cast screen button. but it's kind of clunky.
