Nexus Play will not connect to 5ghz N network - Nexus Player Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have my Nexus player booted up not but for some reason it will not connect to my 5ghz network.
I have a 2.4ghz and a 5ghz network running on my router. phones and tablets can use the 5ghz just fine but the nexus player refuses to connect. Even when i input all settings manually it just wont connect. Works perfect on the 2.4ghz but since the player just right next to the wireless router i figured 5ghz would be much better...
Anyone else having this issue?
Issue fixed itself...must be a bug because it would not work then it did by its self 10 minutes later

I set mine up to connect to our 2.4GHz and never made any attempt to connect to the 5GHz; a while later I came back to it and saw it'd connected to the 5GHz on its own. I think maybe it gets your Wi-Fi settings from your phone via your Google account or something.

So maybe a dumb question. But mine has been giving me hell dropping WiFi connection all the time. My router is both 2.4 and 5ghz. How would I set the player to connect only to the 2.4???

So just log into my router settings and add separate ssid for 2.4ghz?

Anyone else experiencing slow download speeds?

So me and both of my friend had trouble loading a YouTube video, it was so slow and kept pausing. We both have the Nexus 4 and were on wifi by the way. So we tried using another friends S III and it loaded the video fine. When I ran a side by side speed test he got a 19 mbs download and I could only pull 2. Is this happening to anyone else?
Edit: we were on the same wifi

No I kept it on but earlier in the day I was getting perfectly good speeds. Like sometimes my speed is fine and then sometimes it's slow.

It obviously shouldn't be that way. Since this is wifi, try a mix of different networks. Lord knows, this wouldn't be the first phone with wifi issues with certain network security types right out of the gate (or wifi problems in general).

Yeah I switched to another network and it went fast again. Was just wondering if anyone knew the cause of the sudden slowdowns though.

On T Mo, I have had it flip from H+ to 3G but all in all in my speed test without changing anything APN wise I consistently get around 16mbps down. You tube and such flies (HQ) and even on wifi on Xfinitys basic package on a G band router I have no issues at all with wifi and YouTube in HD. Sorry, I'm no help but I haven't had an issue.
Oh my bad, I forgot to mentioned that we were on the same WiFi.

I've also had this on WIFI, thought it was my router, may have to play with router settings a bit to see what's happening.
Its only really noticeable when I try to play a youtube video, although had it other times too.
Also switching to mobile data for youtube as its faster!

Update!!! I figured it out its googles servers they are overloaded this is what makes me think that. Play store loads slow as well as YouTube! Not our phones!

I'm seeing this issue as well and it's occurring on 2 completely different wireless networks: at home and in the office. I've tried tweaking wifi settings on both my Nexus 4 and on my router at home but nothing has fixed the slow wifi speeds. And none of my other Android devices are experiencing this issue (Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus, Motorola Xoom).
I called Google Play support just now and they didn't have any info to offer on whether or not this is a known issue, they just asked if I'd tried restarting my phone and/or done a factory reset. After I verified that I'd already done both things and neither action resolved the issue they said I could exchange the phone, so that's what I decided to do.
If this problem is indeed being caused by faulty hardware in the phone, hopefully the replacement phone will be in a better state and work properly. <crosses fingers>
It's the router that needs to be updated, not the phones. Obviously if you're is broken though that is irrelevant.
Can't say why that is, but I read a thread awhile back detailing it, I will try and locate it.

I think remydlc is referring to download speed over a cellular data connection, and not WiFi (which is what this thread's topic is really about). At least that's the way I read it...
Is this related... I have noticed compared to my old S2 and iPad my nexus has fewer bars and the signal can drop if held in the left hand. The connection speed can be much less too.
Not good.
could it possibly be trying multiple networks? I have a dual band 5 and 2.4 but they have different ssids - my initial set up was to the 5 ghz but when the google restore happened it populated my 2.4 ssid and pw. I found I had to "forget" all my configured access points and just set up my 5 ghz one and everything was smoking

I don't think this is causing the issue (at least for my phone). I've had the slow WiFi speeds on 2 completely different networks, with one being the campus network of the university I work at. Also, I've tried using my Nexus 4 on 2 different routers at home, one of which can do both 2.4/5.0 ghz and when I tried manually setting the phone to just use either the 2.4 ghz or the 5.0 ghz network it made no difference; the phone's WiFi speed was still very slow.
I'm feeling pretty convinced at this point that it's something faulty with the phone. I pretty much tore down and rebuilt my home network yesterday and tried all different types of settings to test the result on my Nexus 4 and nothing made the WiFi speed any better on the phone.

Wi-Fi connectivity issues with 4.2.1

My Wi-Fi connectivity was rock solid on 4.2, but since applying the OTA I'm getting frequent data drops. Still shows me as connected to my router, but get no data. A quick Wi-Fi toggle fixes the problem each time. Anybody else seeing this?

Does anyone else have this issue ?
Connectivity is really key for this device and if this is common then I would likely not update.
upsetting to hear this, one of the big reasons I opted for this over some other 10.1in tablets was the MIMO dual band wireless. My Viewsonic g-tablet has horrible wifi connectivity and it makes watching youtube horrible. I couldnt imagine having to deal with it on my nexus 10 when it comes in the mail.
The first thing to check is always to set a static IP and see if the issue is resolved.
Just got my replacement today. Before the 4.2 and 4.2.1 updates, WiFi was solid no drops and full bars. After updates, pretty finicky drops quite a bit:/ hope the next update addresses this.
And yes sometimes it will show bars but no data. Especially when I start using 5ghz instead of 2.4ghz.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk HD
After a few hours with no drops, I may have discovered a fix for my situation. I changed my access point from WPA (TKIP) to WPA2 (AES), and for the last 4 hours I haven't had a single drop. Prior to this, it'd drop every few minutes. Hopefully this holds up.
I've been having connectivity issues as well. I'll have my Nexus 7 and 10 in the same spot and the N7 will hold a solid connection and the N10 will drop and reconnect ad nauseam
My Wifi is perfect.

Wifi not connecting 5ghz, sw or hw problem

Hey guys
I got my n4 last week and I noticed my wifi (on 2.4ghz) did not work that great. I upgraded to 4.3 and enabled 5ghz on my router. It worked like a charm and I got 30 down without a problem. When I started installing custom roms it would no longer connect to 5ghz. I tried almost all modems and it does not work, it just does not connect. I tried factory reset back to 4.2.2 and it still does not work. Did I break my hardware or can it be fixed with sw?
Thanks..
Ps: I am currently on an EDGE network with low signal strenght. When my wifi is not connected I get better signal..
Most likely hardware unfortunately.

Yes I tried flashing almost all radios.. Using .84 now. And I can see the network, most of the time, but when I try to connect, it just loses it and can not see it anymore.

Before sending it back you should flash it to the stock rom and lock the bootloader, of course quickly check if WiFi works with both bands properly and if that fails then wipe the data.

Wifi issue 5ghz

I have two networks 2.4 and 5 ghz. My phone can connect to the 2.4ghz. But when i try to connect to the 5ghz it only says saved. My wifi works on every computer and i have tried restarting both the router and my phone. I re installed my rom too. This just started happening an hour ago. If you have any suggestions that would be appreciated. Thank you.

5 ghz preferred WiFi on Nexus 4

Hi,
I use my Nexus 4 quite a bit at home and at school. My school has a very slow over populated 2.4ghz, the 5ghz band though is very quick. I've noticed the Nexus 4 jumps on the 2.4 automatically, to get on the 5ghz I have to turn on 5ghz only. However when I get back home, my wireless router only runs at 2.4, so I have to turn Wi-Fi back to auto. This gets annoying having to do this 5 days a week. My question is simple, is there a way to set 5ghz as the preferred band for Wi-Fi when both are present? I should mention my phone is fully rooted.
any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Can you forget the 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi network? That way it won't connect to it. Some ROMS have where you can prioritize the networks too so if both are in range and you have connected to both it will prefer whichever one you set at higher priority. If you don't have a ROM like that just install an app that can do this for you. Here is one:

Unfortunately the 2.4 and the 5ghz networks have the same name, I don't see a way to distinguish the two just with the stock OS.
Try go on just 2.4 then forget the one it connects to while on 2.4 only.

When a router has 2.4 and 5 GHz on one SSID, it doesn't appear as 2 separate access points, just one. Maybe you could make some sort of tasker profile that forces the phone to 5 GHz while your at school, and 2.4 anywhere else if that's possible.
Good point, I forgot about that. I named mine differently. Yeah try tasker, if you can figure it out.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I don't think switching between 2.4/5 GHz is currently possible in tasker.
