[Q] Vista Questions - Shift General

Hello, All,
On a x9500, I have Vista Business/All Drivers successfully installed. Two issues:
1) I can use Windows Update and pull down all available updates, but they do not include SP1/SP2. Any reason why?
2) More importantly, after installing current versions of Chrome and Opera , neither browser allows me to click with the touch pen. I can move the cursor to link or menu, but have to hit the buttons on the left-hand of the case to enact a click/double click. What can I do about this?
IE 7 does allow full touch access, but it nags me to update IE, which I can't do without the SPs.
Many thanks,
Jake

Forgoing Windows Update altogether, I was going to install SP1 manually. But as it downloaded, I found too many complaints about it in this forum, especially about wifi issues.
So I passed on any SP, and with regard to the touch-less browsers of Chrome and Opera, I set up Midori Portable. Midori works fine, with full touch, so Vista is about as set up as it can be.
Wished I owned a copy of Win7--that seems to be the much better deal
Jake

For wifi- there are driver updates, posted somewhere around here.
Search for 114.134.168 or google shared folder.
Should boost your connections like a charm.
But always remember to install as administrator in VistaSP2 compatibility mode.
Win7 will be a good choice, and Win10 will give your Shift a turbo.
Technical preview is available, but only valid till 02/2015

Many thanks for your post and while I had found that folder of driver earlier, I hadn't known they were updates. No wonder the wifi works well in my Vista Business
Vista's sluggishness is startling--when I bought the machine, the previous owner had installed a fully sp-ed Vista Ultimate, which was also brutal. Will look into Windows 10, thanks for the tip.
Right now, mostly running Hardy 8.04. Had to build a wifi script to get the sd8686 to work with WEP. Ubuntu 8.04's Network manager doesn't play nice with WEP, only WPK2.
On another partition, I have Xubutu 14.04 running. All hardware functional except wifi. Have installed many different OSs but none recognize the sdio card except pof's magic setup for 8.04.

Windows Server 2008

This may be hard to believe but windows 2008 server Standard is FAR FASTER than running Vista SP1 on your Shift.
I have installed Server 2008 today and it runs really quickly. It also runs with approximately 490MB of RAM free and responds to starting applications much better...
There are however a few issues........
1. ShagCtrl.exe doesn't run properly it complains about WLANAPI.DLL not being present.
2. The touch screen doesn't work.
Everything else does and works much faster than using VISTA.
Anyone post for me the WLANAPI.DLL so i don't have to re-install vista just to get it please and let me know where it should be placed...
Thanks
Fascinating !!
You actually did what I didn't dare to do.. !!
I assume that there are a few people here capable of delivering what you asked.
The problem might be the touchscreen drivers, to get those working...
I'll keep a close watch on this thread.
One question, did you delete the recovery partition ?
ANother question, did you attach an external DVD an booted from it ?
In the boot menu, there's no option , maybe I should attach a USB DVD or Ethernet connection ?
EDIT : forgot to say that there's postings on this forum offering the drivers seperately. Maybe you can install them ?
Drivers and stuff
Yeah kept the recovery partition F3+FN intact.......
Booted off an external USB DVD device (which shows up on FN+F10)
I have all the drivers separately but was missing some DLLs.
Recovered to VISTA last night and copied off Program Files & WINDOWS to capture all the DLLs and infs....
Re-installing 2008 Server now...
Will let you know how i get on........ But it's sooooo much quicker.....
Microsoft really have optimised Server 2008 over Vista even though is shares some of the same kernel.........
I think a better way forward is to get it to work with Server 2008....
Regards
Blitz
wow, great job mate, but how much does server 2008 cost?
and is it worth that cost, considering vista is installed free?
Rory
I'm an MSND member (Technet PLUS) which sets you down about 400$ a year. In return, you can install any OS they ever made with a key. 4 timees per key if im correct. So m Windows 2008 is payed for already, but understand not everybody has technet plus from microsoft.
It's a darn good deal.
If you do get ShagCtrl and VitaKey work with your Windows server 2008 I think that might make me install Server 2008 as well.
Good Luck and let us know how it turns out!
sorry for my ignorance, but does Server 2008 behave in a similar way to Vista? can you install the same apps? i.e. would Skype work? what would be the main disadvantages of doing this?

Remote Desktop and VNC Issues

Ok, i know this one has probably been done to death, and yes i have searched the internet and this board for an answer and i couldn't find it. So what is my question you may ask?
My question is this. Where do i find a working remote desktop application for windows mobile 6.5 (OS version 5.2.21869) rom version 1.66.405.2 (FYI my provider is O2-UK, the device is fresh out of the factory and not O2 branded). I have an app installed at the monent that is supposed to work but all i get is a "connecting" message and nothing more and that's using wifi to a windows 2003 SBS server or my windows 7 pro desktop. I have tried IP address's and hostnames and still nothing. I did notice that if i connected to the server from my desktop while my phone was trying to do the same i did get a "connection failed" message on the phone. I'm also having issues getting vnc to work (it's acutally pretty much the same problem as i get with RDP).
I do know my wifi works becuase i use it all the time in the house and the GSM radio is definitely able to talk to my home network on the external side because exchange direct push is working perfectly in secure mode.
So ideas or links will be welcome.
Thanks guys and it's good to be back.
**EDIT**
I just had a thought. Would the activex control for IE that RWWP work?
The problem is your setup on your PC. Remote desktop on the phone works out of the box (as long as it can connect then it will.)
There have been discussions on this forum about Windows 7 and remote desktop, so it's there to find (I know you said you searched, but it is there!)
I use Windows XP and had my home PC setup for RDP connections already as I connect from other PCs, so when I got my HD2 it worked straight away.
I should say at this point i am an IT Engineer. I have tested this to death. I have tried it with firewalls on and firewalls off. Exceptions allowed and not.
Please also note i was trying to connect to my windows 2003 SBS server which does work from my desktop (and if i really wanted to i can connect from the server to the desktop using RDP or VNC) and my preivous HTC touch diamond and the HTC artemis i had before that. Although since my last RDP install on a phone (and considering my last phone ran WM6.1) i've lost the cab file i had.
John, thanks for the fast response. I really do appreciated it but i think you missed the mark a little. If you wanna have another stab feel free.

I'm not a Windows 7 user, so I can't vouch for any of the conversations that I've seen on here, but there have been many regarding this exact issue. It usually turns out that they don't have a version of Windows 7 that will allow them to host RDP sessions, or that there was a setup issue that could be resolved.
Have a look at this thread and see if anything there helps...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=533664
I got this from searching and was a little confused as to why, until I got past the first 2 posts
Hope you find something useful mate.
Nope that's of no use. It's only discussing very basic and standard things i have already done but i must emphasize that i am not really that concerned with connecting to my desktop from the phone (i'm just using it in my testing to prove that RDP is actually open and working on both computers). The server is the most important thing right now and as i have said it has worked in the past. I have not changed any settings on either of my machines and i can not get it to function with this new phone.
I'm pretty sure it's something wrong with the rdp client i had to install on the phone because it didn't come with one. I have read that there is one that works and one that doesn't but there was no further clarification of which was which. Right now i would settle for a verified known working client for the phone but i just can't seem to find a link. Hell if someone out there knows of a VNC client that works i'd settle for that.
Just to show how dedicated and willing i am to get this sorted i did follow the instructions for creating a vpn (well tbh i had already created one ) that connected no worries. Then I fired up the rdp client and tapped in the internal ip address for the server, username, password and local domain. It's come back and said it's "connecting..." but i can see no activity on my internet connection coming to or from my phone. Yet if click the shortcut on my Desktop that has the same details it connects faster than i can blink.
Also please take into account that windows 2003 SBS only has a firewall on the external interface. So the internal network is unprotected. The VPN connection bypasses the firewall for authenticated external devices and users. That is why it was suggested in the link you posted because the same situation is created when you use it on windows Vista or Windows 7.
p.s while i was proof reading this i tested it on the wifi (so on the internal side of the network) and nothing. I'm pretty sure from monitoring the wifi link activity that the RDP client isn't sending out any data at all which sort of comfirms that there is a working and non working client. Seems i have the wrong one. Has anyone got any links to windows mobile 6.5 RDP or VNC clients that i can test?
Thank you everybody.
I didn't realise that there was a non-working version of remote desktop out there. That sort of explains it then doesn't it!
I know it's overkill, but if you can't find a working version of the app then you could always flash a ROM that has it, but like I said, the version that was on my phone when I got it (1.43 ROM WWE) worked from day 1.
You may not have an answer yet, but at least you've ruled a lot of stuff out.
Hope you get it sorted mate.
Now isn't a good time to reflash the rom because i'm a bit busy with other things but it is something i was considering solely because the HTC text messaging application is awful and i'm pretty sure it has a memory leak in it.
So what's the recommendations for roms taking into account that according to HTC i have the latest version for my provider.
Also i'm still open to suggestions on the VNC front?
RDP works flawlessly here too, but then again I had it in my ROM. You say you saw 2 versions of the RDP client, I'd recommend trying the other one, and if it still doesn't work... happy flashing The ROM in my signature works fine, but it's just one of many.
Well i read it in a post on another forum as a response to someone having a problem like mine BUT with windows 7 home prem which isn't ever going to work. Unfortunately there was no links provided.
I think i better go and get the kettle and move it into my office and start some hardcore searching. Man, I hate hardcore searching.
VNC Viewer
Attached is a FREEWARE VNC viewer I have been using on various HTC devices I have owned over the years, and it works perfectly well for me. I know you guys are discussing RD Protocols and Services, but if you have UltraVNC server available on your "host" PC, then this little beauty will work like a charm!
I use it all the time to dial into my home PCs and switch torrents on and off of downloading etc. and it is faultless. I also use it on my work phone to connect to our customers PCs in order to remote fault find / rectify etc..
N.B. This viewer IS NOT written by me, nor have I anything to do with it, all I know is that it is based on FREEWARE public domain code, and issued as freeware, and on an "as is" basis to the WM community.
interesting to see you have the exact same version of the phone as me. I have tried that VNC viewer already with no luck at all but i'll give it another go and see what happens.
**EDIT**
just tried it out and with good results. Hooked up to the server on the wifi just fine but i really wouldn't wanna have to click n drag something. so that will buy me sometime while i work on the RDP thing.
Thanks namwollem
Ok spent almost an hour search and got a couple of hits. Thanks to a thread on social.microsoft.com i found the cab file should be called wm6rdp.cab. Ran a search for it in google and found 2 different versions. One cooked by a guy called finster and another one (looks more offical) the finster version installed and seemed older than the version i had as it didn't support remote storage. That failed to do anything new. I next tried the more official looking cab and this removed the finster version, soft rebooted the phone and looked promising but alas it didn;t do anything different. Interestingly i now have 2 RDP icons on my start menu. both run the same app so i'm a bit confused as to how that happened.
I'm really quite stuck now and, as i mention before, i want to avoid flashing the phone for now so i'm still open to ideas.
I hate it when things get wierd. I removed all the rdp clients i had installed in an effort to tidy up a little bit. There was one that would not remove. It was marked "bengalih productions windows mobile..." so i figured i would give the phone a reboot and try see if it worked and hey presto it does. This is the original client that i installed and the first that didn't work and i haven;t changed the config at all so i'm completely baffled. I have noticed in further testing that if i select any options (like fit to screen, or colour depth) it will not connect but if you give it the user and machine details it seems to work. It also is not not RDP version 7 compatible (so you can't use it to connect to windows 7 pro or ultimate machines) but who cares when you have VNC and RDP working?
So i am happy. Thanks for all your help guys.

[Q] Questions by a new to Windows 8 user

These questions are regarding my Toshiba Satellite P845t-S4305 I just purchased a few days ago and absolutely love both the laptop and windows 8. I have a few questions and greatly appreciate any help anyone can provide me. I have searched to the best of my abilities and have found all other answers I needed these are what I could not find answers to.
1. Any time that I try to install Microsoft Office I am unsuccessful. I have tried both the trial for Office 365 premium and purchasing the monthly subscription for 9.99. I have an .exe file to install but when I run the program I get a UAC prompt asking me to allow the program to run. I hit yes it disappears and nothing happens. I have tried both 32bit and 64bit versions and I have tried right clicking and run as admin. I have been able to install 7-zip and chrome both of which were .exe files as well.
2. Sometime the mouse behaves weird. I am referring to the touchpad not an actual mouse itis kind of twitchy almost as though someone has connected remotely to the computer and we are both trying to control it at once but this is not the case and it is only occassionally not all the time.
3. What are the limitations to running an app in metro rather than desktop mode for example Chrome I can either run in desktop mode or relaunch in metro what if any limitations do either mode have?
4. Is there a way to get touchpad multitouch gestures similar to a Macbook such as two finger swipe to go back or forward in web browsers or four finger swipe down to open the app switcher? Pinch to zoom using either the touch screen or touchpad would also be convenient.
Thank you all so much for your time reading this I know it is a little detailed.
XDA has always saved me in the past I have no doubt you all will come through once again.
Thank you once more for good measure
The only one of those that's really about Win8 is the Metro vs. Desktop question... The truth is, unless an app is sideloaded or installed from the store, it's not really Metro. Software (including Chrome) can look and feel like Metro, but that's not the same. As for the tradeoffs, Metro apps update through the store (they can't update themselves), run in an extremely restrictive sandbox (can't even read most of the filesystem), have extremely limited multitasking (they can be snapped to the side of the screen, and if expressly written to can run in the background, but that's pretty much it), can sync state across Windows machines with the same account (without using their own syncing code), use the Settings charm for controlling options and permissions, and respond to gestures.
1: No idea what the problem is. Watch Task Manager as you begin the install; check what happens after consent.exe (the UAC prompt) goes away. Also, obviously, reboot (if you haven't already) and also make sure your Windows is up to date.
2: Hardware or driver (hardware-sepcific) problem. I can't help you, ask the manufacturer.
3: Answered above.
4: Yes, use a decent touchpad and/or driver for it. My 4 year old HP laptop supports multi-touch even in Win7.

1. Check add/remove as Toshiba may have installed a "trial" version or Starter edition. You should remove any previous versions of office installed by Toshiba, doubtful they are full and sounds like you have your own you prefer.
2. Try updated drivers, I've found the Toshiba touchpad to be very finicky and harder to control vs other's though. I have used it on Portege R930 and Z930 and I can't say I really like the experience compared with other's like HP or Dell.
4. Try the utility for the touchpad.

1. worked perfectly there was a trial version of office installed as soon as I removed it everything went as it should and I now have my office installed thank you so much
2. coming from a macbook left me with high expectations for the touchpad but the touch screen really makes up for that. I always thought the macbook would be perfect with a touchscreen.
4.I will have to look this up thank you

Thinking of buying a HTC shift

Hello i collect old phones like htc advantage and other winmo and nokia devices.
But the shift is still kinda expensive.
I have an oppurtunity to buy one for 100 euro.
Point is i like to play with those devices alot.
At the moment i am trying to get truevga and mods on the advantage.
But is the Shift still capable?
I mean 800mHz is quite underpowered. Will it play youtube at lets say 720p fullscreen?
I understand it isnt capable of full hd streamin.
And what about games.
i like to play older games anything from need for speed (up till underground so 1-6)
And emulators? especially n64 because its the heaviest one i am planning to use.
Its quite alot of money for such old device and on ebay i didnt find anything to compare the price with
so valuewise is it worth it? 100euro is like 115 dollar with todays course.
the device itself is practically unused but comes formatted so i have to install windows.
I do this alot on laptops and pcs. and i am also no stranger in flashing winmo and android so i dont expect to run into any problems if there is still support and i can find drivers and stufff
I hope some of my questions can be answered.
wow its really a low activity device
no one got any tips?
100 Euro is quite a good price. On eBay it's usually much more expensive.
One thing you have to keep in mind is the RAM size- you'll have to get a
214 pin 2GB to make Shift run nearly satisfying.
Like this one:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/2GB-DDR2-214...y-HTC-SHIFT-/190400263728?hash=item2c54bd7630
Unfortunately i have never found a 4GB RAM version.
Thx for reply
thats quite expensive for 2gb ram...
So can it run youtube...
i havent decided yet if i am gonna do it or not
it includes a dmg 01 gameboy.. so it makes it kinda tempting
i already have a broad collection of phones en pre tablet tablets
i will reply when i get it.
sooo i bought it.
Really nice device
didnt came with windows though
so i installed windows 7.
got the drivers working even with 5 year old threads here with dead links
Touchscreen is working
but wifi isnt. So i think the wifi was switched off in vista...
thats not my big issue it wasnt my plaaning to use the wifi because of the performance of this device.
So i will check that some other time.
What i do want to have solved is a bigger problem. I m trying to install some light games en emulators on there.
First up N64. Runs windowed. not great but playable but when i try to go fullscreen i get BSOD. 2times in a row and then windows wouldnt start so i had to run the startup repair. Now its working again. Just not in fullscreen...
Other problem is with retro city rampage this game isnt even 3d.
it seems to start but the moment it switches to fullscreen i get the BSOD instantly...
Is this a driver problem? i recall i have read somewhere that u shoudlnt update the intel gma driver but i could not find this post. and i dont know if i have done this or not i would need version numbers...
Maybe im 2years late ;P but i hope someone will know the answer.
in the meantime i have a GB DMG01 to play with and mod.
Is it such a legacy device that no one uses it anymore?
I have a Shift and I found Vista to be unusable compared to Ubuntu Hardy (8.04). I've heard better things about Win7 and even Win10, but at the end of the day, the machine has its hardware limits and at least for me, that precluded even Vista.
Hardy , through pof's magic, allows everything to run, even the 3G (if you have the SIM), and it's quite zippy. I don't game, but perhaps ubuntu (circa 2008) has enough games available. Of course, you could run Wine, but that can be a can of worms for certain MS software.
Though I run MS Word 97, HanDBase, and a couple of other MS apps without problem in Hardy.
Prolly best to stay away from heavy graphics. Maybe Leisure Suit Larry
Jake
I fixed the BSOD problem by reinstalling windows 7 and NOT installed the gpu driver update.
It runs like a breeze
GTA3 and vice city i can play on low settings but no lagg at al!
And the n64 emulator i get 60fps in fullscreen.
I would recommmend 7 to anyone with this device.
Only the wifi is not working because it was turned off in vista and i read its a hell of alot of work to turn it on without vista.
problem is i bought it without windows so i couldnt turn it on.
But its better for me saves alot off battery
This is pof's htc shift panel for Windows that controls wifi/bt/etc. I don't know if it works in Win7, but you can research to see if it's what you want before actually trying it out.

Hey man thx for the tip
will try this when i get home from work.
ill report later
Ok wow
i need some program called cygwin
if i try to open it i get cygwin1.dll is missing
so im working on it
i found the program wil install it tonite and report back
Excellent. I'll be glad to hear that it works.
Jake
Hmm cygwin installed without any problems.
But now it asks for cygioperm-0.dll when i try to launch it.
i need to install ioperm says the readme but it seems i cant find it...
This is some kind of addon right?
Huh, dunno what those files are. Here are the Vista drivers, etc:
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0BzqfCViUrpr6UkVkY2lTLUIxSGs&usp=sharing
For Vista, the shagctrl program does wifi/bt/etc. you could try installing that and see if that gives you the missing .dlls/etc. It may run on its own, I just don't know. I have Vista on a partition, the shagctrl works, but I never use Vista/Windows.
Jake
shagctrl doesnt work in windows 7
only for resolution siwtch.
i got the hsect from this google drive page u gave me.
its same same download i found.
but this is in the readme.

The windows version needs CYGWIN (http://cygwin.com) with "ioperm" support.
Open a cygwin shell and run "ioperm -i" to install the ioperm.sys driver.
when i type ioperm-i it doesnt recognize it as a legal command...
i am gonna try it tonite if i connect it to the internet with cable.
But otherwise i think i skipped a step somewhere.... will let u know.
I just run windows for the games.
its a pretty capable device for its specs.
GTA3 without problems.
Carmageddon tdr 2000
n64
all runs perfect
If you can't rebuild it, I suppose you could get a Hardy 8.04.1 (no higher) livecd, repartition and dual boot with Hardy (with pof's shagctrl) and Windows.
I don't believe you can install pof's shag with a livecd only (pof calls for a reboot), though MAYBE, you could install shag and only switch on wifi/bt without a reboot, I dunno.
Hardy is certainly snappier than Windows, but your needs don't seem to match what Hardy can do. Though dual booting is always cool.
Jake
Haha XD that is an option indeed.
But if i switch wifi on once i wouldnt be able to turn it off in windows right?
I want to preserve battery power whenever is necessary.
When i installed cygwin i noticed i could choose any packages and addons tobe installed
maybe i reinstall cygwin first and i can find this ioperm addon
Once wifi was turned on, I think you could disable its driver in Windows in the systray.
Ok i wil look into that.
First i keep trying to find ioperm for cygwin and how to add it
now when i open hsect it says cygwinioperm1.dll missing not exactly but close.
I dont get the option when i reintall cygwin. Also there isnt really a uninstall button... not in control panel not in the root folder.

XP Tips and Tricks

After years of running the wondrous pof's Hardy 8.04.1 Shift setup, I've gone back to XP. Mainly because Links2 (the fastest browser for this ancient hardware) no longer works with all sites due to its lack of security updates.
cygwin's Links2 2.14 for Windows has enough updated security, so one can visit any site. slimjet chrome browser for XP still syncs with google, but site-rendering is pretty glacial.
As usual, the sd card reader in XP is buggy, mostly due to its old 2002 driver that seems un-updatable. First, I've only gotten a 2GB-or-below card to be recognized. Secondly, the card has to be reinserted upon booting into XP and can also disappear upon resume-after-suspend. But the second issue is solved if one uses devcon.exe and a batch script disabling/reenabling the card driver:
Code:
@echo off
"C:\devcon.exe" disable =SDHost
timeout /t 2
"C:\devcon.exe" enable =SDHost
If anybody else is still using XP, it'd be interesting to hear any of your own workarounds.
I keep dragging my Shift out of mothballs and it's still one of the great niche devices.
Jake
I've only used Vista, Windows 7 and 10 on my HTC Shift, but now it is too slow with any of them so in the next few days, I'm planning on repurposing my Shift to become an offline retro-machine. Therefor I'm intending to install XP on it for the first time. I'll share my experiences on this forum. I'm intending to mostly use it for games and c64 emulation.
Did anyone manage to find Win XP drivers for the Shift?
Thanx

XP runs well, and the sound works, but I couldn't get optimal screen resolution, and many programs and games (such as Halo, FSX and even basic C64 emulators) refuse to run due to missing drivers.
Since XP has not had security support for a long time, I don't connect XP to the internet, nor do I download any of the general XP driver bundles that are available.
So XP HTC Shift is kind-of useful but not as much as I had hoped. I'm thinking of going back to an offline Windows 7.
I uploaded a couple of HTC Shift Windows XP videos today on YouTube. Here are the links:
