Discovered a manufacturing defect in the waterproofing of at least two D6653 phones - Xperia Z3 General

Hey,
Just making this post to bring to light a common manufacturing defect I've discovered in at least two Xperia Z3 D6653 phones around the wrist strap hole. Apparently it's not completely sealed, and will leak air and water. As a hacky solution I've taped over the hole with electric tape, and that seals the device. I assume it's present in many more phones if the same problem showed up in mine. Just wanted to get the info out there before people start submerging their new phones.
I've made a video to demonstrate the issue:

Wow. I can get the same thing to happen when I press against the lanyard hole vs not. However, before finding out about this, I previously dunked this phone in water with a video playing for about a minute and it continued to work fine. Was it only a matter of time before water would get it and make my phone fail? I'm not sure. But there I can't think of a good reason why the pressure will increase and stay high with the lanyard hole closed vs open and the pressure equalizes. I have the D6616.

I previously used the first phone underwater very briefly (about 30-60 seconds), and it seemed just fine. Though I tried it later for about 5 straight minutes and it started getting very hot in the lower left hand corner and it made a buzzing sound from that same area around the hole. It also wasn't very deep at all, only about 3-4 inches of water.

Manufacturing defect. The Z3 is full of it! :/
Attached is mine with an uneven flap.

I'm trying to get another exchange from the ebay seller. Here goes nothing. Sorry for the off-topic.

Mines goes from 1007 to 1116 and straight back down to 1007. Should I be worried?

I was the one on your YT vid that suggested using black RTV silicone, in place of electrical tape, to seal up this apparent hole. RTV silicone is rubbery when dry and yet can easily be removed when needed and will not damage the phone. As well, it is black so it will match the phones body to some degree. If needed, get a toothpick and pop out what you filled in. If not, leave it forever and seal up the hole.

That's a good idea but I'm annoyed by the fact that we have to resort to these fixes for something that shouldn't be a problem in the first place.

How are you 100% positive that just because it leaks air, it is not waterproof. I fish a lot and wear breathable wader that do not let water in but it is not air tight since it lets water vapor/air out. Water molecule is relatively large compare to air molecule.

Someone should make a tiny rubber plug, I'd buy one just to ease my paranoid side.
aquaholik (interesting SN to point this out) made a good comment as well, things can be watertight but not necessarily airtight and this could be by design to let the internals breathe

Agree with aquaholik. And the most important part, shouldn't the barometer sensor have access to air? How else can it measure the pressure of air?

use my RTV Silicone idea and you will get just that. It will form the area and make an impression and IF you opt to take it out, you would have a "plug" of sorts.

My phone has this behaviour as well. I already had it in water briefly.
This might be a seal/mebrane to account for heavy pressure changes.

I'm copying my response to a reddit post I made about the video...
...the first (now non-functional phone) only lasted about 5 minutes in about 3-4 inches of water. When I pulled it out of the water, it was buzzing and really hot in the lower left corner, which is exactly where the lanyard hole is.
This is very strong evidence that water got in through that hole, especially since the rest of the phone is so well sealed. Plus lasting only 5 minutes at that depth is clearly below the rated performance of 1.5 meters for 30 minutes.
When I got the first phone, I tested the waterproofing of the device by putting it in a dish of water for about a minute, and it seemed just fine after coming out. So I assumed it was sealed, but it simply took much longer for water to enter.
Given my experience with the first phone, I'd rather play it safe and just tape over the hole than risk damaging yet another device in conditions that are well within spec.

Yeah, I totally understand where you are coming from. But if there was indeed a membrane/valve to counter dramatic pressure changes, then closing this pathway could lead to new problems.

That's true if it's by design. Which it may still be.
However, I'm going to just run 100% with it plugged and see if anything happens. I really can't afford to lose yet another phone in just a few weeks, and If I do get any negative side effects, I'll be sure to report back.

I'm so paranoid. After reading everywhere complains about the questionable waterproof of the Z3, I decided to give it a ride and check out if it really survives, as I still have the return policy and I was really scared but I put it in water, not to deep, took a little bucket and filled it with about 10-15 cm water and waited for about a minute. As I expected it survived well and I didn't see any abnormalities. Then I dried it up using a microfiber towel and everything works fine. I'll see the next days if I find something strange but everything seems fine. Speakers and microphone work well.

Send your other one through sony repair.
They should cover it as long as the indicators arent red.
They repaired my original Z which displayed water damage, but because the indicators didnt turn, fixed it.
Its clearly a manufacture defect if it is the lanyard hole being open which is causing the problem.

they should cover it even if the indicators are red, they market it as a water resistant device.

My HD2 got wet, dried out, turns on, has some issues now.

I had it less than a week. I have NEVER gotten a phone wet in my life (45 years old.) and I had this one for less than a week and my dog rammed into me (Big dog.) while I was standing near the sink, texting, and bloop, it goes into the soapy water. I got it out with moments and popped the battery out.
I must mention that when I pulled it out of the water it was vibrating constantly and the LED's on the back were blinking quickly.
It was soapy water with dirty dish crap in it. I got on line and read immediately. I followed the directions to a T. Soaked it in distilled water for about an hour and then let it dry by the exhaust port on the back of my computer.
48+ hours passed and I attempted to turn it on. Insert the battery, nothing bad happened. Press the power button, after a second or two it vibrated and the screen lit up with the logo and my heart was happy. It booted into Windows and I was very relieved.
It was short lived. There are some issues.
There is obviously moisture trapped under the screen. There are dark spots, light spots, swirls, etc. You can't see it too much in Manila but when the screen turns a solid, lighter color (Like in Task Manager or Opera Favorites for example.) you can see the swirls.
People can hear me clearly when I speak but I can barely, oh so barely, hear them talking to me. The volume in the ear speaker is very muted.
The rear speaker, for music, nav directions, speaker phone, etc. is nothing but crackles. I mean you can hear and deduce what's coming out but it's buzzy and crackly the whole time. Just awful sounding.
The touch screen has some diminished sensitivity, maybe 10% less reactive all over and up to 75% less reactive near the edges.
It's so bad that I'm using some piece of crap back-up flip phone from eons gone by. I pray nobody calls me in public so I don't have to pull this piece of crap out. It's that bad. It's magenta too. (That's the manliest word I can think of for pink.)
In your opinion, do you think my HD2 will improve over time? Another full day has passed, back in front of the heating vent. The screen has changed some. I can't say that it really got better but it has changed. Some of the solid water lines that were there are now muddled. Perhaps a 5% improvement. The speakers show no sign of improving nor has the screen sensitivity, they are the same crap as yesterday.
The speakers are really the deal killer, if I can't hear people then it really isn't a phone.
Everything else on it seems to work fine. GPS, Wifi, data, etc.
Should I give up on it, dump it for cheap, and move on to something else like the Nexus One maybe, or wait until T-Mobile US gets their HD2s? (Is there a release date for the HD2 in USA yet?)
What is your opinion, hopefully based on experience on this?
I lost my job last week (Business closed.) and honestly, I'm more sad about this phone than I am losing my job. I know that's twisted but I loved using this phone. Loved everything about it. I miss it dearly, even though I know it's just a phone.
Please advise. Thank you for reading.
Of course the half a second it was in the soapy water wasn't enough to get all the parts really soaked and the water didn't get a chance to get in all the parts and between the lcd and the touch screen so you decided to put it in water again for about an hour just to make sure.
I'd hate to see you rescue a drowning person.
Anyway I'm sorry for your loss.. maybe you can get a friend's insurance cover it.. (figuring your dog has none). Also dry it some more..

Well it was longer than a half second. It slipped under some dishes and I fumbled awkwardly a little bit trying to get it. I would say total submerge time was probably 6-7 seconds. It looked very wet to me. When I popped the battery there was definitely soapy, dirty dishwater coming coming out of the insides. Maybe I did more damage by soaking it in distilled water but it was overwhelmingly recommended on the internet when I searched for wet phone.
Edit: I'm in the US and this phone was not released here. Is there a way to have insurance on a phone not purchased through typical channels?
Thanks for your thoughts.
Bit of a long shot, but have you tried recalibrating the touch screen? Don't think it'll make a huge difference but... never know.
Regarding the speakers, you are probably SOL. I think you'd be surprised what you can sell a busted phone for on ebay.
Re: Insurance, did you purchase it with an AMEX or a 'premium' Visa/Mastercard? You automatically get some coverage.
This actually makes me very nervous because it reminds me that personal digital (the aussie dealer for the T9193) didn't accept AMEX, so I used my normal Visa... sigh. Off to buy a warranty.

That's a good idea, I'll give that recalibration a shot.
Are the speakers made of paper? Did they get wet and become permanently damaged? I've since read dozens and dozens of stories on the net about wet cell phones and I've heard nobody mention anything about permanent damage to the speakers. Does the HD2 have some kind of unique sound system which might make it more susceptible to water damage?
No on credit card, purchased with cash on Craig's List.
Thank you for your help.
Hmm, maybe it's in my head but recalibrating it does seem to make the touch reaction a little better. Seems to run a little smoother.
Honestly, if I can get the dang sound to work half way decently I will be able to live with it for a while. I blew some compressed air (Not high pressure but a decent blast.) into the grills but no difference on either. I can't imagine what's in there, other than a torn speaker, which could make the cones not move efficiently. Maybe some kind of corrosion in the magnetic motor behind the cone possibly.

remember when you search for solutions online to check the date when it was posted.. that distilled water trick maybe worked for nokia 3310's.
Also be carefull with air when it's wet.. if it is paper, I don't know.. but imagin what happens to it if it is and it's still wet.... I'd carefully use a hair dryer... and leave it dry for a week, not 48 hours..
I've seen a Dutch insurance company that insures your phone online without questions.. you just pay a fee for stepping in (€25). There must be something like that in the states. I don't know if you have home insurance, but some companies nowadays also cover mobile phones and laptops, even when your on the move.

You may want to query one of the parts replacement sites to see if they can get you a speaker. Something like truesupplier.com or cnn.cn (Just as a reference, I'm not vouching for the legitimacy of these sites.)

the non capacitive touch screens are indestructable compared to the HD2's.. anyway.. I would have tried without first..
I know my comment didn't help much after the damage was done but it just seemed like the last thing I would do.. that's all. what's done is done. Let's just see if you're insured..!
I've had my fair share of wets phones and I don't think 48 hours is long enough for it to dry out completely.
Cover the phone in a cloth and sit it on top of your television for a week.
Don't forget, you let the phone sit in distilled water for an hour, that's plenty of time for water to soak deep down into the nooks and crannys.

That's pretty much what I'm doing now. Only difference is that it's sitting behind the exhaust vent on my computer which seems to be a nice temperature for drying without being too hot. My TV is a plasma and has no flat surface on top.

HARD RESET <<<< & don't use your phone with battery cover for few days so water evaporate
at this point i would be wondering if soaking it in ethanol / alchohol would do it some good. my reasoning:
-Alchohol / ethanol / similar is a water dispersant and evaporates very quickly
- the liquid is much thinner than water so will get into every nook and cranny
- its wort a go since it seems like its a bit buggered anyway
From what I've read the 99% denatured alcohol rescue is split between two camps, both far on one side of the option or the other.
I guess getting it under the screen might help but I can't see what it could do for the speakers.
If I do this, and I'm very hesitant to do it, it will be a total last ditch effort when I've given up all other hope.
I think some long term drying is in order, and maybe a couple of fingers crossed.

Do you happen to have a product name you can recommend?
cover it with newspaper, then go get uncook rice, cover the phone & newspaper with rice, leave it for a week for completely dry.
Or have a lot of dry silicagel, you can use it as well. If what you have is those type usually found in dry food, make sure it dry otherwise it won't observe water. If it brand new like those found in glossary store, then just put phone in big zip lock bag with the silicagel (or something where air cannot go in or out).
Just remember, don't heat it (like hair dryer, hot air, etc) as that will speed up the oxidize and have rust on small parts in your phone.

Put a good amount of pressure - is this normal?
Is your snapped on properly?

Nope, mine doesn't make any noise at all when I put pressure on it. Like eyecon said above, you sure it's on securely? If so, perhaps there's a defect with your back cover. But yeah, that's definitely not normal behavior.
Ya if it squeaks, I'd get it exchanged since it may not be closing and snapping in properly, thus negative the water resistant seal

no issues here, my battery door is strongly in place. But i do have some doubt about the rubber gasket in the back, if you guys want to take a look at my thread and post your findings it would be greatly appreciated

Mine does. I went to the store and asked for another to check on it and it did the same thing in the same location (in the middle of the power button side). I switched two covers on two phones and all combinations were with the exact same problem. Guess a bad batch or who knows what. It's driving me crazy . I'm waiting for my UAG case which I guess will cover up the issue.
Mine does. And it irritates me like anything. Going to the store to get it replaced.

I have the same problem and the Samsung support mean to me, I must send my phone to the Samsung repair. They are crazy, I don't like to send the complete phone to change 1 back cover, next week I wend to the provider where I bought the phone and then I see, maybe they'll change the cover
Yup, have that too but it doesn`t bother me a bit. I use a flipcase or s-view case anyway.
My wireless charging back cover creaks like mad. Worse place are just below the power button and above the camera lens.

A phone that creaks bothers me a lot.
Today I started to notice this on my s5. It's mostly on the right side, but it can squeak a little if pressed in the middle. It's not something that is very audible but what worries me is if waterproofing is compromised or not.
Also, it's fully snapped on and o checked that multiple times
EDIT : Just noticed that pressing on the heart rate area, the case gives in a bit and has a small gap. I poured a bit of water on top of it to see if it would leak a lot of water (haven't used the phone on water or tested the waterproof before) and after i take out the case a bit of water entered through there. It wasn't much, but maybe if it was submerged in a bit more water it would leak more inside and i don't know if it would reach the battery or not. Is it normal for water to enter there? Or is there a problem in the case?
Also, in most all of the inserts the cover clicks when i put it back on, except on that right side that i mentioned. Funny enough, the water leak on the heart rate sensor is on the left side of it.

Its something that only a few people seem to experience because i haven't found many reports of it, only a few. Probably some batches of phones with a production problem or not so good quality control, i don't know =/ But i do know that all the clips are snapped on or at least look like it.
I actually contacted Samsung about it but got the generic and expected reply to take it to a repair center to analyse the phone - which i didn't. My main concern would be any problems with waterproofing, but i just putted on a case and don't think much about it now actually.

The Best thing you could do is check if the Phone is waterproof BEFORE putting it in water. Hint is not mine but I forgot who posted it before, sorry. To check it you have to close all flaps and call *#*#7378423#*#*, then go to service test and pressure sensor. With all flaps closed press gently on the screen, if pressure will increase that means the Phone is waterproof

Yep, that is what I used.
The pressure spiked up so I assume mine's watertight.
I also tried to do a test with CPU-Z ... yes, the pressure sensor returns a value higher than nominal at that time. The same thing happens if I press the center of the screen with the phone on a table, if I press the edges, if I press the frames inward etc ... I tried to do another experiment: with the phone on the table, I put on screen a weight (whatever, the important thing is that you see the value of the pressure) and the pressure is increased, then return a little later to the previous value. Try that and let me know. I've got a screen display with a little on the right side beetween screen and frame. By the way, if the test is ok, my z3 should be waterproof.

Ahh. Thanks for that tip. I'm really eyeing for this device. I'm wondering if this phone would easily bend if placed in the front pocket. And in that way if the phone bends a bit, it may take away the waterproof of the phone.
I would say checking the Barometer reading on the phone is a good way to determine whether the phone is waterproof or not. I pressed on the screen with the flaps open, there is no increase in pressure.
Easy way to remember the code
the code is actually a name shortcut using T9 dialer
so if you press *#*#SERVICE#*#* it's the same code, this way it's easier for you to remember
I wonder if the test pass (like the pressure is increasing in that *#*#SERVICE#*#*. Then I put it into the water and it's not resist and dead, will I get warranty?

I would say checking the Barometer reading on the phone is a good way to determine whether the phone is waterproof or not. I pressed on the screen with the flaps open, there is no increase in pressure.

Why would you expect a change in pressure with the flaps open? There's no change in pressure.

Ahh. Thanks for that tip. I'm really eyeing for this device. I'm wondering if this phone would easily bend if placed in the front pocket. And in that way if the phone bends a bit, it may take away the waterproof of the phone.

Just wanna mention that my phone did bend while in my front pocket. I took pictures of it somewhere but cannot find it. It was the area just behind the volume rocker. I was out barhopping the night before and was wearing tighter jeans than normal. The phone was never dropped and there were no other marks on the phone besides the bulging of this one area as it became separated from the back glass. It did not, however, affect the water resistant properties of the phone as far as I could tell. I ran it under some water in the sink and it remained functioning. I since sold it cause I could not tolerate the imperfection....my new one has had no issues for the past week even traveling in the same jeans pocket all day.

Wow. Does the bend really that obvious like the ones in the iphone 6+?
Water damage to Z3
Hello guys,
Sony z3 user from singapore here.
Got my phone on the 10th of December 2014. On the 19th of December, I went swimming with the phone. Before I went into the pool, I ensured that the flaps were sealed tightly. The first 5 minutes were all fun and laughter as I was able to take some underwater shots. But not even 10 minutes later, the screen begins to flicker and I was scared that the phone had water damage. Cut the vacation short and went home with a heavy heart. Tried to put it inside rice to dry but the phone screen didn't come to life.
Everything else bout' the phone still work. People could still call me and I can hear my ringtone (but I could not accept the call as the screen wasn't responding.), charging still work as vibration, sound and charging notification light till work. Even my alarm rang at the exact time. When I went to check the water ingress indication in the usb and sd card/sim card port, it is still white and not pink (which meant that the water didn't even enter from the port).
This is very disappointing as IPX8 rating was the only reason i bought the sony Z3. Currently I have sent it to the service center in Singapore. WIll keep you guys updated.
Maybe it some went through gaps in the frame/front or back glass. Two Z3s I exchanged you could see the glue intermittently along the frame and had severe light bleed when seen at night. So it could have been that, some Z2s had water leaking in from the camera area.
So its important to do the pressure check.
There's also countless dedicated barometer apps in the play store that do the same thing without having to go through any menu's. I prefer barometer+.

Xperia Z3 D6633 Bend Gate

I got my phone on the 12/26 and on 12/30 I noticed that it's bent rather severely at the power button and going up.. I was able to bend it back mostly but the frame now has a small crease at the power button Not sure how it happened. Must be that the dual sim port weakened the frame. It seems to take less effort than in the Iphone 6 plus videos. Guys, be careful with your phones.
I am going to contact Sony about a replacement or repair since it only the frame that is affected. I'm not holding my breath since it's an international phone and not sold in the States.
Such a shame, I really love the phone.

Do you put the phone in your pants/jeans pockets? I carry it in my pockets a lot (not with jeans), but haven't had any issues. It could be a D6633 thing.
I put it in my back pocket. I usually do remove before sitting. I have been doing the back pocket thing with all my Samsung phones (G2, G3, Note2) and my OnePlusOne without issue. I don't want to make a big deal out it with a Youtube video, just want it fixed and change my habit.

It only takes one time sitting on it to bend... Most of those other phones are plastic, and will actually bend back into their previous state. Where as the metal band around the Z3 is malleable and will still where you bend it(If bent enough)
I don't think there's anything to be fixed, it's just a draw back of making phones so big and thing.
I keep mine in my front jeans pocket all of the time, although I do adjust it or take it out if I feel it's tight.

I was able to bend the phone back and got scary pop as the glass reseated itself. The phone is now perfectly straight against a straight edge. Now the only complaint is the tiny crease at the power button. Hardly noticeable but I can feel it and I know its there. Looks like a bumper case or TPU case are in my future in order to hide the crease.
I will make sure my next phone has a strong mid plate like my Samsungs, OPO and OPPO have.
Just noticed that mine is bent too. Never got it in my pockets. Only in my jacket where there is enough space.
Just put the phone on a real flat surface and the bottom right end lifts slightly higher. Quite disappointed at that point for a phone at such a price, this shouldn't be happening!
I always put my phone on the front right pocket of my jeans and I have never bent any phone regardless of size (max is 5.2 inch) I'd say its more comfortable to put it in the front than in the back pockets. Never have to worry about sitting on it and quick access to it.
I don't like how news site emphasize "bendgate" and trying to make the phone and brand look bad. Every phone can bend depending on where it is placed.
*Of course assuming that you are using a case. I'm using a case for the Xperia Z3 and protects it fine from this bendgate phenomenon.
No bends on my Tmo Z3. I've had mine since late October, and it's an many pants pockets and much sitting.
Still no reply from Sony, it is the Holidays though.

Me too.
And it fall down three times without any case for the phone. And nothing happen, no scratch, damage. Sometimes i put the phone out of the case.
I agree with you, about the news.
I have the 6603 and while on holiday it has bent in exactly the same way as in OPs post, though I keep mine in the front pocket. Pretty disappointed as it was in a case too, have never had another phone bend. Will be contacting my phone provider after the weekend to try get it replaced, as the bluetooth doesn't work either (never did)... Shame about the build quality on these first batches of phones.

No, I was more concerned with straightening the phone. Next time I bend it, I'll take pics. I'm sure it will bend again.
same problem

My phone also only 1 month old has bent and blue tooth not working. This phone is not fit for purpose if so many phones are bending. The frame is not strong enough for the size of the phone! will be contaxcting Sony and Kogan for remedy otherwise Dept of Consumer affairs. Plenty of evidence here this is a fault with this phone.

I have my phone since Ocotber, always rides in my front pocket. No bending so far. It's not the phone, it's the user.
It must be a joke. Can't see how it is possible to bend this phone. Unless you do it on purpose of course.
Its definitely possible, the thinner phones get this becomes a bigger problem as the side "wall" for lack of a better word is important in resisting bending in addition to the internal frame. The front pocket can also create a a significant enough force when walking to bend it people just don't realize this.
Plastic is actually much better than metal for such thin phones as it bounces back to form. This a price to pay when people perceive metal (in this case aluminium which bends easily) as somehow being "premium" over plastics. At least people aren't asking for granite phones lol.
I have the D6603, Today i found it bent and i attempted to bend it back and the metal frame (near the dock connection) just popped out, (Attached an image) Luckily i contacted the retailer and they said they'll replace/refund/repair it
Wow, you are lucky, I would not expect them to that. I have been in situations where I slept on the phone and tight jeans, so far no issues though I was worried.

Dirty antenna and back cover stains

I have my Xiaomi Mi A1 for about three months now, and I've noticed that it's not "brand new", even though I: am using a silicon case, never dropped it, don't take it to the shower, never let water get near it, wash my cover every now and then...
I've taken every careful precaution I could imagine, and only 3-months-old it already shows some signals of age.
I expected that a "premium phone" as the Xiaomi Mi Series, with Full Metal build should last a while longer, specially when you take good care of it.
I'll try to attach some pictures. The stains look like oil stains, but they do not come out. It's like they're from inside, which would justify they only showing near the borders of the metal cover, or near the antenna specifically
Does any of you have something similar?
Is this something that happens with black metal bodies?
It seems that the case you're using is at fault. It doesn't fit well and gers dirt inside and rubs on the phone surface

Mine came with those "stains" also, noticed it after a week of using it (never saw it until I removed the jelly case so I can clean the body). I thought it was just dirt stains so i wiped it with a non-abrasive cloth and a few drops of alcohol but it never came out. I've been using mine with a jelly case since day 1, saw the box being opened right in front of me when I was buying it so I never wondered if it was a second hand/used unit so it might be from the factory.
It sucks to have those "stains" on the antenna lines, but since its' black and hard to notice I never bothered to share it with anyone on this forum. I just hope it's superficial.

Well, it could be. It's not a very tight case, and it's very cheap (they often send this one as a gift).. My new ones are about to arrive. Guess I'll have to live with the stains.

No problem buddy, thanks for sharing yours. By the way I changed my clear jelly case to a matte black tpu case so I won't see it anymore.

Same hare I also Facing This Issue..... It's like the color coating is gone
I think this is happening because have the habit to clear the screen (at least 5 times/day), making some pressure (on the back and front of the phone) and movements that would make any grain of sand act as a sandpaper, specially because the case is not exactly 100% fit.
I suggest that anyone with the same habit be careful enough to first remove the case, and only then clear the screen.
