Screen is not flat - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got my note 4 for 1.5 week now and today i saw something very very odd.
The screen was off and i saw the reflection of a ceiling lightbulb in my screen and what i noticed was that at a certain spot the reflection gets deformed! like you would push too hard on the screen and you'd push that section a little deeper.
I tried to capture a photo but that didnt really work out as the camera is blinded by the reflection. It looks like the glass just isnt completely flat , like when its still liquid and cooling down you'd put your finger on it to make an indent..
Its located in the middle heightwise and about 2/3rd to the right side. I've never ever seen this before, only with my ipod touch 4g i could push the glass and it would change reflections (so it kinda bent a little bit) but it came back to how it should be when pressure was released.
I've been very careful so i have no idea how this could have occured.. should i bring it back to the store or something?

I'm not really sure what you are describing but sounds like a defect. Better try returning it before you cant.

Return it before it's too late. That spot could be ripe for problems down the road when you've run out of warranty (ie weakness in the glass.)

Mine's the same. Almost like it has ripples but only noticable when the screen's off and I look at a bright light reflected in it.
I assumed it was normal . . . Perhaps due to the 2.5D (or whatever it's called) glass production. Doesn't seem to make any difference to the display or to touch sensitivity.
Anyone else have this?

Vey vey slight ripple on mine, but it's still considered normal. 2.5D is the rounded feature at the edges of the screen where it meets the metal rim.

yea mine isnt noticeable when the screen is on, only when looking at bright reflections. I'm going to the store just so they can notice it too and maybe write it on my warranty or something

Mine isn't flat either! Remember my Galaxy Note 10.1 had a similar problem but it was only on the back cover... having the same problem on the front side is totally unacceptable to me and I will return it tomorrow!!
Problem must be that components underneath the screen is sticking up too much.

<- Can someone tell me how this picture came in this post?!!??
[I put it there. V]
Same here!
I have the same problem!
Very annoying considering how much the device is - this is the only negative that I have about it.
This is where a silicone case would come in useful. None presently exist for the Trinity, but then it is only a matter of time.
can someone post a picture of the problem. i am also thinking about getting a dopod d810 soon in the new year and I would like to see how serious the problem is....
yep a photo of the problem would be great.
Have you tried getting the phone replaced?
I've sent the phone in for a service to see what they have to say. But HTC will most likely deny that this is their problem... *argh*
I will post a picture when I come home.
Sound as the same problem with the Wizard after a few weeks you can peel of the coating on the side also (think wet hands).
Check out the attached files...
BTW: mine started to peel off on the front too... This is crap! *argh*
Did you drop it or was this from normal use? I'm a bit worried now...
Can a black sharpie or something make it look better? I'm interested to hear what HTC says!
humm, mine is still perfect after 2 weeks
No dropping or anything. I've used it with care, even though I'm a bit "fast" when I take out the stylus, but I mean a unit like this should be built for that kind of use. (and I don't have any long sharp nails either which might actually be a killer for the paint.... )
btw: what is a sharpie? Some kind of "make-up" stick?
HTC should offer to replace the phone.
I would be pretty alarmed if they didn't.
Sorry, Sharpie is a permanent marker
Google it
hi guys,
that looks pretty bad. it can only get worse if its peeling like that. get a replacement. it seems the gloss coat isnt bonded properly to the case
Peeling off here too....
Well I have this problem too, but its merely visible. The interesting thing is: It looks like there is shining metal under the coating. Can anybody confirm this? I wouldnt mind to have the bottom piece looking like blank metal.
I think there is a dark, semi-shining metal below the coating.
Still waiting for a reply from the service center.
OMG they seems to painted the bottom part of white Trinity case over with black paint on top.. semi-shining metal coating you guys seeing is what bottom part of white Trinity looks like in fact.
Just took a look at the white trinity now.. And you know what SecureGSM? You might be right... Or maybe it's just a coincidence...?

Is your Light & Proximity sensor Vertical or Horizontal?

I know that there are many variants of the galaxy S but there ive seen some models of the I9000 having a vertical square shaped L&P sensor such as this

whereas mine has a horizontal oval/circular shaped L&P sensor. Any thoughts?
Mine are horizontal (not like the pic). What difference does it make anyways, lol.
the 2 dots are side by side
that will be horizontal
the picture is vertical (top & bottom)
if you are asking this question because you are concerned about the Screen Protector, then there's no need to worry it works, even if covered
Side by side here (horizontally)
side by side here.. could just be a mistake in the drawing of the i9000
Horizontal for me as well.

i still got 2 of those screen protector with the top/down cut
i prefer the ones that protects everything except the home button
i prefer no screen protector

It DOES (if you apply enough pressure).
i agree this phone screen is basically scratch resistant. The back cover on the other hand is horrid, and has many scratches... Dropped it a few times on asphalt and the phone front looks band new but the back is starting to show signs of wear and tear.

[Q] Screen Cracks

I've got my shiny HD2 and i've fallen in love!
But after 4 days of owning i tripped today and my worst fear the screen crack!!! and its huge the screen is covered in 70% cracks. tho it still works but its hard to make out the keyboard in some areas
before all the posts about how to repair i used the search and am aware how to replace and purchase a replacement im looking at £32 on ebay and a few hours of time one weekend...
But now my question in my search for answers i've seen lots and i mean lots of info on this, is the screen the phones achilles heel. is there away to prevent this from happening. eg a good screen protector to help with the stress of dropping all falling!! would gel cases make a difference?
Basicly can i prevent this from happening in the future?
Regards
Wappy
cause you can prevent it, dont drop it!!lol, silcone case helps, ive dropped mine a few times and from height, just has to catch it at the wrong angle and it will go!

wondered how many posts it would be till some one said dont drop it lol
what i feared!.. is there a neck chain or a chain attachment available to i could attach it to my jeans so if it did drop it would only end up by my knee? but there is no hole attachment for it again meaning i have to hold it meaning my little fingers might drop it
Ahh MY old TYTNII I could throw it at people and it still worked lol, but im guessing bigger glass screen = more fragile!
Yeah, it sucks...this happened to my wifes phone like 3 months ago. It had a protector, but apparently a little rock on the floor hit the bottom part of the screen. $125 for a new phone.

the screen, for the size it quite tough, but it is glass!I had a LG BL40, dropped it after a week, chucked it in the bin and got this...apart from a couple of scratches, no cracks!!
well this is the damage to mine!
and with it still working
i've orded a gel case and a Vikuiti screen protector and hopefully that might help for the next screen

My hand broke before my M8 did

Well, I fell snowboarding the other day with my phone in a chest pocket. I caught an edge and sandwiched my hand between my body and some ice. Needless to say I broke my hand and completely bent my phone but miraculously my screen didn't break, so at least I have that going for me which is nice.
Kind of sucks because HTCS 6 month manufacturing warranty only covers cracked screens, fml
Here are some pictures, I figured somewhere here might enjoy this.

Hope you have a speedy recovery!
Htc One wave (tm)
On a serious note that should be easily fixed just by replacing the case. That is if everything works fine inside
I got pain on the chest by looking at those pictures.
Hope you can fix it soon.
Yeah, ordering a new backside should be the cheapest way. Replacing it is not hard - all you need is a bit of patience and a source of heat. Order the top and bottom of the front aswell, those are bastards to remove and replace properly - other then that it sounds more dramatic then it is.
remove tops and bottom, heat and remove back side (there is guides on youtube/interwebz). The internals and screen is the expensive parts and those should still be allright for you.
Yea I've thought about replacing the case., I was able to bend it slightly back into place which makes it at least fit in the case again.
Everything works, for now. The only problem I've noticed is two bright spots in the center of the screen most likely from something pushing on the backlight. It's only noticable when looking at dark content which I can lI've with.
I must say HTC did a pretty damn good job engineering this phone :good:
if HTC-LG have a baby...this is the HTC G-flex
@popwarfour At least you managed to answer the question. "HTC One M8 - Does it bend?"
Hope your hand recovers okay.
I actually bent mine as well somehow and I sent it into htc for repair, they fixed it and didn't charge me anything for it. I can't even tell it was even bent. Mine was not as severe as that though.

Light leaking on top of the home button?

Do you see it too? When the display is on of course.
I'm worried it's a gap and will compromise the water resistance of the phone.
Glad to hear if you can see it too.

Yes, I've had a few devices and they all had it. Light bleed is also visible where the aluminum bezel meets the front glass....and the above the notification LED...aaaaaand below the earpiece. All completely normal, happened in every device I've tested. I have major OCD with this kind of stuff, but it really doesn't bother me anymore.
ETA - Here's an picture I took a while back with my old s6 edge, you can clearly see the side light bleed and above the home. Times haven't changed. That said hopefully Samsung will address this in the S8.

Thank you for your detailed answer I really appreciate it I'm sorry to hear that you struggle with this topic as well just to make sure I attached a picture the exact location can you confirm that this is the spot where you see it as well

Yes happens right there, above the home button. But again, that's not the only place where you'll find the light. It's annoying sure.
I have not noticed any light bleeding like you've described.
Although at night, as shown above, brighter sides of the screen will cause where the glass/aluminum meet to "glow" since the display light is reflecting/traveling down the curved edges. Looks weird, and not a fan of it... but not a deal breaker either.
My onyx edge has a gap between the metal frame and front glass, more or less around the volume buttons region. I read it's not uncommon, but it worries me because it could mean water leaking in.
Every device has a gap between the the aluminum bezel and the glass. Not sure why Samsung designed it this way, but it's literarily in every device. Along with very minor light bleed by the notification led, home button, and earpeice speaker. I don't think it'd have any impact on the water resistance, otherwise every device would be broken that took a dip in water.
You're right but I still don't trust the water resistance. Also what I've noticed is that the screen is a bit nervous when on full brightness. Almost seems like an ultra fast flickering when I look at the screen
