And update of where they are at with the project. - Project Ara General

This the thread is going to be about where they are with a project Ara and how far it is.

He are some videos from YouTube

Some articles on what they are doing.

Well, at least they have given a date for the next prototype

For the first developer prototype because they have a working prototype right now.

Is the magnetic hot swapping gone or coming later? I noticed the modules where sliding in as apposed to the magnetic hold I had seen before
Edit I saw the magnetic video.. Phew glad it's still happening

Gingerbread? Already?

androidcodex.com/gingerbread-is-coming.html?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=gingerbread-is-coming
well, it was always destined to come out before the end of the year, whether the article is correct about the October date is anyones guess.
People have already learned their lesson with how long it took Froyo to come out...
I wouldn't expect Gingerbread any earlier than December with the time Google needs to keep updating it before eventually releasing it.

Don't forget, Google did say that after Froyo they would begin a 6month till next update period, where updates wouldn't come out for 6 months. I figure June (when froyo was released) is 6 months from December so technically it still fits googles model.
It sucks how only specific phones are going to get the update

i think he meant older phones wont get it but that's understandable because 3.0 is said to bring GUI improvements which may need 1Ghz or above..
Gingerbread sounds delicious
The article repeats rumors knocked down by Dan Morrill
Re release date:
When will other Google products support WebM and VP8?
WebM support in Android is expected in the Gingerbread release (currently planned for Q4, 2010). We expect many other Google products to adopt WebM and VP8 as they prioritize it with their other product requirements. Keep an eye on the WebM blog for announcements.

actually they meant after gingerbread and its going to be yearly not 6 months
Well we might start seeing Gingerbread in October, but probably officially rolls out in December. Sounds about right.
Funny how the article lists phones which meet the requirements but neglect to include Google's Flagship Nexus One.
Currently there are only a handful of devices with these types of specifications, among them the Samsung Galaxy S and the HTC Desire.

Well those requirements are fake anyways, Google denied it directly, so I wouldn't care what phones they put in a list.
Hopefully October or sooner The Nexus should have no problem running it

I offer the mayan's a bit more credit than that.
maybe they will be announcing something cool about gingerbread on august 12th?
http://gizmodo.com/5609571/whats-google-got-planned-for-august-12th
We won't see Gingerbread before December. I seriously doubt we'll see it this year. Likely January-February time frame.

[Q] Next Android release

Do you think Gingerbread will be a 2.x update or 3.0 update? There are rumors surrounding both. What do you think and why?
I know 3.0 is being made to support tablets, and gingerbread is only going to be available for high-end devices.
Many rumors speculate that the next release will be anywhere from 2 weeks from now until Christmas. It's pretty much guaranteed to be released in 2010 though.
To be honest, in my own uneducated opinion...
..I think we will see a glimpse in 2010 before christmas, perhaps even a working version on prototype hardware. But a released version wont happen until 2011.
Im hoping they take there time with it.
And please for the love of friking god will they finally make openGL use mandatory regardless, there are too many good phones with dedicated hardware being wasted ><

Any chance of Omni developing for Bacon (OnePlus One)?

I would really love to have Omni on my OnePlus One. Any chance of xplodwild getting/wanting a device? I imagine the Omni team has had the opportunity to get the device but in the off chance that they haven't, I have an invite for the sake of development.

I already let an invite lapse. OnePlus has been lying and spouting bull**** for way too long, I'm not sending them my money and I'm not really motivated to spend any time on them either. I MIGHT update my hackpatch this weekend to support the possibility of doing a blind build. Most of the rest of the Omni team feel the same way at this point.
Graffixnyc did a few builds for find7op with my hackpatch but I think he sold his device.
The good news is that the find7op is 95%+ identical to the find7a, so it's not TOO hard for someone who knows what they're doing and actually wants to bother with it to support the find7op. Problem has been lack of people who both know what they're doing and want to screw around with OnePlus these days. If it weren't for this commonality (which OnePlus consistently lies about on a regular basis...) the find7op would probably be dead in the water with Omni.
There's some dude who is interesting in taking a crack at being maintainer, but he's on a long vacation (lucky Europeans!) until September.
Although this post is old I just wanted to say that I'd like to try omnirom but if it was official I'd feel better than some dude test and try(blindly)
We have the phone, ok 1+1 lies a lot* but now it's a bit late I think + I couldn't stay with my DHD any longer ...so much lag answering simple calls I was forced to move
*They promised us lolipop with CM12s and OxygenOS(official vanilla rom) in fed 12, now it's in march for no reason who knows if these roms are ready by march
CM was suppose to deliver first in late of jan, then first days of feb, then 12th of feb now march ...they seem to be scrwng with us in regular bases
I'll take a crack at this, I happen to like blind-builds and have a lot of experience with doing things this way; my resume is in my sig
Edit: I'll go for a source-built but if I'm unable to do this I can surely fork it onto your stock ROM

OnePlus is find7op as far as Omni goes
We had nightlies for it with 4.4 and it'll get brought back with 5.0 - we're just behind schedule for 5.0 across the board for a variety of reasons. Starting this week I should have more time for Omni and one of the other core team should be getting more free time in the next few weeks, so we'll hopefully get caught up soon.

Project Ara Release

Hey,
I've been waiting for this phone to launch since the Phoneblocks project started and it gets delayed every year. So, does anyone have any idea about when it's going to release? Should I wait for it or buy another phone? I also heard that google is making a 13 inch tablet instead of the phone, is that true? Is the phone not gonna be made???
I have to decide:
-S7
or:
-Project ara
Already emailed them: no answer

I can say you can go with project ara
Sent from my GT-I9505 using XDA Labs
next month?
There is a news report today that the phone (yes, it's a phone) is scheduled to release next month. Personally, I think ahead of Google IO.
The report also says that the device would take a display of 13.8 cm (not inch), quoting some company insider. There's no tablet, it looks like. I'm too new to use hyperlinks around here. This is the url rtn.asia /t-t/18497/google-release-modular-ara-phone-not-tablet-next-month-price-150

Question So no Android 13 until next year

Is anyone else bothered by this? For a new company and new product you would think they would be up to date with firmware releases. Most other phones already have 13 or will get it this year, whereas we will have to wait maybe until June next year. Not impressed
Bummer, but not surprised
It will better to focus on bug issues more than Android versions

The Android 12 version of Nothing OS still needs work and stability.
It's not reasonable to switch to Android 13 until version 12 is completely reliable.
For info, the stable version of Android 13 has only been available for a few days, so please be patient

Why couldn't they release the phone with stable firmware? Instead they release a glitchy phone and early adopters get to be beta testers except we dont get paid for it. At least Carl gets Pei'd
Maybe nothing Paranoid android will come with android 13...
nothing is looking to recruit several android devs currently.
for android 13 let's let a few months pass for the majority of problems to be fixed on the vanilla version of android, for the moment there are still big issues
Why didn't they recruit a big enough team before releasing the phone so all the issues could have been fixed before the phone was released?
What's the point? A few changes like icons ? We already have icon pack. I prefer having a bugless Android 12 than a full of bugs Android 13. Be patient, it requires work. If you're not, then do your own Rom based on Android 13 and share it with us. That's a one year company. It's already a miracle to sell a smartphone that fast. Being impatient isn't always a good thing man

That's a flawed argument. Have you ever watched a movie and thought it was bad? You're not allowed to have an opinion on a movie unless you become a director and actor and release your own movie using that logic.
Sounds like a coping strategy tbh

Maybe, but by choosing a phone from a brand new company, you can't except to have the same speed as company like samsung or xiaomi. Talking about them, when you see that they update to next versions but that they are full of issues, I prefer not to deal with those issues. If you wanted to always have the latest version before everyone, why didn't you choose a Pixel then? You have the Pixel 6A for the same price
I'm not saying that Android 13 not before 2023 is a good new, the point is, if we have Android 13 in february but far more stable than in october with bugs everywhere, then I don't care considering the few changes between 12 and 13. On a day to day use, you won't even notice the difference
Very disappointed, expected better . Might sell and buy something else

You're reacting like someone who wants to have everything right away and above all without any problems, and that's just not how it works in the smartphone world, especially for a start-up.
I'm not defending Nothing in any way, but I must admit that this reaction makes me wonder.
That it's Samsung with an R&D office and huge resources that ends up with smartphones that have recurring bugs and critical problems too.
I think that now we expect too much from smartphone or electronics manufacturers.
There will never be 100% reliability, it's impossible!
Have you ever been part of a team that develops roms, applications?
If so, you should know that as soon as a problem is solved, another one arises, more or less important.
So you have to go through the whole command line to see the possible error.
All this represents time, money, and a lot.
I disagree with your comment that Nothing should have had a bigger dev team.
I think you were on OnePlus before, and also criticised OP for their dev teams!
You knew when you bought a Nothing(1) phone that you would have bugs for sure!
I remind you that it was the future buyers of the Nothing Phone(1) who put pressure on Nothing to release their smartphone quickly, but I can confirm that the communication model chosen (the Nothing Hype) is also a factor and has its negative side, and I got caught up in the hype too....
So yes, the Phone(1) is a smartphone with a number of bugs, but I think it's a smartphone that will soon be reliable.
So be patient and forgiving with Nothing.
Thanks and sorry if my comment may seem harsh, but I think that you will be ok with me (I hope )
Can I suggest you to read this news from xda about the Nothing timeline for Android 13
Nothing delivers updated timeline for Android 13
I'm also very disappointed. 1.1.2 was already good enough. I find no deal Breaking bugs in ether 1.1.2 or 1.1.3. I wish they'd rather start developing android 13 directly instead of wasting time on software that is already ok enough.
Id say its a big DEPENDS if they polish the heck out of it iron out as many bugs and make it super smooth like 12 is on this phone id say its well worth the wait cuz no point in android 13 day one if its gonna lag crash etc like there's no tomorrow
Rom developers have a better chance of getting android 13 out for the nothing phone before nothing actually does
In the dev chat yesterday on Discord they said a beta would be released before the end of the year.

Still not a public release of android 13 for the nothing phone though. At this rate the phone is going to be behind. Other companies are already working on their version of android 13 which will be released way before nothing even starts working on android 13.
