Just a note about the S Pen (pun intended) - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 General

So the other day I was using the S Pen to type out a text when I noticed that it was acting funny. I would get double letters and buttons on the keyboard would register while just hovering over the screen. I was getting very frustrated and couldn't figure it out. People online said to try to re-calibrate it or smack it a bunch of times.
So after getting nowhere from smacking the heck out of it, I realized that the S Pen doesn't function well with 3rd party keyboards.
I had installed the Google Keyboard and was using that. As soon as I switched to the the stock Samsung keyboard the pen functioned perfectly.
This may be common knowledge to some, but I just thought I'd give others a heads up, in case this is their first time using an S Pen, like it is mine.

Working fine with swiftkey

Anyone else hit period instead of spacebar?

I do it constantly, most.of.my.sentances.look.like.this.

Haha, no. Haven't had any problems here.
haha. i.thought.i.was.the.only.one! =/
is there any other keyboard with a longer spacebar and a smaller period button/?
Swype son! that'll fix your problem quick. It took me a few attempts to get it right but that keyboard is amazing and it works great from portrait mode. it automatically enters a space between words when you lift your finger off the screen.
smart keyboard pro has a much longer space bar and it's an excellent keyboard.
Wow. Great app! Thanks! I was getting really annoyed at that period key location.
Im still stuck with muscle memory from the iphone, and i keep missing the spacebar. But im getting better at it.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Use swype, then you don't need to hit the space.

I have the same problem. I was doing the same thing on my incredible before my X as well. I don't like swype though and it seems even worse on a bigger screen.
Any keyboards that remove the useless keys beside the spacebar? I.seriously.end.up.typing.like.this.in.all.my.SMSes.
I keep missing the spacebar and end up typing five words together before i realize what i did.

I do it on occasion, but only when I am in a hurry.

I had the same problem, pretty badly. Coming from iPhone. I read this thread, and installed Smart Keyboard Pro. What a difference. I went with the HTC skin and I'm *loving* it. Like night and day. Very customizable, too. Love the gestures and the hold for alt-key.
Swype is awesome but...
The landscap keyboard sucks, the buttons are too close together and the space button is on the right? Potrait I love though. I wish I could combine the two!
Smartkeyboard pro is awesome. No more period instead of space
Yeah.I.am.typing.like.this.all the time too and it is very annoying.
I actually like the stock keyboard except for that one issue with the period key... should be a few more pixels to the right to make the spacebar bigger and it would be perfect.
The other BIG issue I have is lack of arrowkeys. WTF? You mis-type something and then have to try clicking kind of close to the mistake, but you know you never get it perfectly, so I end up deleting and retrying. PITA. Give me some arrow keys for editing purposes.

Quick controls in honeycome browser

Has anyone else switched to quick controls in honeycomb's browser, by going to settings->Labs? It gives you all the menu items in a semi-circle at your finger too just from swiping along the edge of the screen. I have since day one and am not gng back! I haven't seen anyone comment on this awesome, somewhat hidden, feature, so I thought I would attempt to bring it to everyines attention.
in fact I love it so much I wish it was integrated throughout the rest if the os. I often find myself swiping the side of the screen attempting to use the back button or whatever else. Then sadly I realize I am not in the browser and begrudgingly reach down to the bottom left corner...
If you guys have tried it let me know what you think. If you havn't, give it a whirl and post back
I tried it, but couldn't get it in to it. You have to swipe very close to the edge of the screen, so the popup wouldn't appear several times because I wasn't swiping close enough to the edge. It seems like it would be good, but it needs a little work. Maybe they've fixed it or there are some settings that I didn't look at.

I have never had it not register...perhaps you're doing it wrong.
Simply move your finger from the bezel to the screen on the left or right sides of screen, like you are pulling the menu out. Move your finger to the option you want and release.

I often catch myself swiping when using a 3rd party browser. Long pressing a page brings focus back to the tab as well so its the best of both worlds.
It does however confuse others when they want to check out my Xoom haha.
Yeah I love this option as well.. Took me a little while to figure it out as well.. Make sure your swiping closed to the middle as well because otherwise all the options wont be visible.
Yeah, honestly, my only complaint is that it registers sometimes when I am trying to click a link near the edge of the screen. But doesn't happen very often and a precise touch or quick zoom remidies this.
It is a nice option but I do not like the fact that it hides all of the other controls that are much easier to simply tap with one touch. I realize that it adds more screen real estate but it just doesn't seem easier to use to me. Maybe it is just me.

Agree... would be nice if this was done by toggle so you could have both if you want.
Greedy users we are.
Didn't know about this but I really like it.

The only thing I would like added is a "close tab" button. To anyone having issues activating the option wheel, you don't just touch the edge of the touchscreen...you start with your finger off the screen on the bezel and drag it on from the side.
I love it too. At first it seemed a little flakey but the more I use it the more it's become second nature.

When there are multiple tabs open, they appear across the top just like before. To get another tab use the + (plus) sign.
There are different controls in others corners. This seems to make the browser faster. Thanks for the tip...

SwiftKey Tablet X

I can't believe people have not brought up SwiftKey X. IT'S a Keypad made especially for Tablets. It's. AMAZING. It has normal mode and thumb, but the most keypad typing mode with the press of a button. Has Blue Neon keypads for typing in dark when wifey is sleeping. Got it for $2 when it first came out, but now it's $5 and totally worth it. AWESOME Keypad Tablet for Xoom's etc. etc. This Dev got it right. Check it out.
Also got it when it first came out. Love the keyboard layout but it's kinda annoying that it doesn't support Asian languages
Purchased this yesterday. Loving it.

Been using it on my Nexus One since it first came out a year ago ... bought the official tablet release on day 1 too (was using the beta)
how does this compare to the Thumb Keyboard? I've been using that since I bought my xoom. I have swiftkey for my phone and usually turn off the autocomplete using spacebar feature. Since I would probably do that on the tablet version too, is there any reason to switch to it?
I use Thumb Keyboard but I always did like SwiftKey's word recognition. Thumb Keyboard is good so I'm not sure that after buying that I want to buy another keyboard...

With 1 button click you go from normal Keypad to Thumb Keypad. It's on the bottom row. You will see the 123 button, SwiftKey button and then a button that looks like dots, that switches you from normal mode to 2 Thumb mode with a click of the button. AWESOME. This is how a Tablet Keypad should be. LOVE this Keypad

Using the Neon Blue buttons at night is a reason all by itself. Can use Xoom while wifey is asleep and TV turned off. No need for external light
Am I the only one finding SwiftKey shift key implementation counter-intuitive? Perhaps it's just that IMHO the standard keyboard nails it.
I checked it out. Then went back to thumbs keyboard. The It was OK but thumbs keyboard has more options

Some spen keeper oddness

Interesting story, thought I'd relate.
So I was at home yesterday, playing with the s-pen keeper.
I took out the s-pen, turned the screen off and walked around.
I could walk roughly 18-20 feet before the alert fired off. Fair enough.
So today, I was driving home, and halfway there my phone made some noise I didn't recognize and vibrated.
Got home, pulled my phone out - s-pen alert! Huh? I didn't remember pulling it out.
Drove back to work, looked around in the parking lot.
Just on a whim, went back inside and looked in my cube - and there it was, on my desk.
So I managed to get a good 40 feet away from it before the alert fired off.
Still though - that's wonderful! Any alert at all is fantastic.

This phone has so many bells and whistles I can't wait to get my hands on one.....
That is SOO cool! So does that mean that the S-Pen has/is electronic? Because I remember someone else on another thread saying it wasn't, but the fact that the note II knows how far away the pen is and features activate when you press a button must mean it has some gizmos inside there, right?

It doesn't know how far away you are.
It knows if you pulled out the stylus.
It can also kind of guess whether you are walking using the accelerometers. (similar to how pace counters work).
I managed to drive really far away before setting the alarm off, because it looks for an up/down forwards movement, I guess.
- Frank
it goes off after about 10-30 shakes, depending on how the phone moves.
I did a dumb thing when I first got my Note II, I pulled the S-Pen out and walked away with it, wondering why I wasn't get an alarm!! Why did I think the pen would make a noise?! Doh!

Actually, there is a bluetooth spen available with mic and speaker. And it would be quite nice if the pen could make a sound or something to help you find it.

I just noticed something with the s pen when you hover over a keyboard, it deactivates touch responsiveness and only allows the S pen to be used. Its kinda cool

Wacom technology uses magnetic resonance.
So if you have the stylus close enough (1 cm?) It creates a feedback loop and the Note knows the stylus is there.
I don't think there is enough intelligence to determine how far away it is even if you are that close.
And more than an inch away or so and you're out of range totally and it's all over.

Typing

Anyone notice thing seems a little more difficult. I feel like I'm hitting the right buttons but I end up with other things. Might just be this SwiftKey

I'm using SwiftKey and I have no issues at all maybe because I'm more precise

Probably so. I'm more accurate on the Samsung keyboard
No I'm the same way. Maybe because I'm not used to the edge, but it's happening to me sometimes. The Samsung Keyboard is kind of annoying me (but I'm already used to it from my S5), but it keeps on changing my words on me even after I put the check mark to leave it that way, and it keeps putting unnecessary spaces. ._.
I've not noticed it at all. I'm using the Blackberry keyboard on the S7 Edge and find it quite good. I could never get used to the Samsung or stock Android keyboard.
