If your device lags. Swap it out now. - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 General

People, if your device lags in hangouts, while scrolling through menus, or just seems slow go get it swapped. Its not all touchwiz by any means. You have a defective device.
I just swapped mine out tonight and its literally night and day comparing the new one and the one I returned. The device is far more responsive and actually performs as I was originally expecting it to. And believe me I tried everything but then I thought to myself why on earth should I have to fix a brand new top of the line device? It was ridiculous. Unnaceptable actually.
I went back to my Verizon corporate store and they had zero issues with me swapping it out and there were no restocking fees or anything like that.
I know this has been covered in other threads but most of those have been filled with random side posts that aren't getting to the real point. So please, do yourself a favor and go get a replacement note 4 before your 14 days are up!

+1 I agreed with you 100%.

Hmm.. weird. I m getting nasty lag in hangouts and a little hank in other places.. I went to try to exchange right now and every store is out.... I did update hangouts on 4 store phones and they all had the same lag when scrolling and sending messages.
I guess I could call customer service but I bet their sold out. Not convinced so many people have a bad device though. . Wonder if it's some software issue..

hangouts lag is not enough to warrant a replacement though. hangouts has lagged since day 1 for me on every device I've owned except a pure aosp rom or device. it's just how hangouts is. it's poorly optimized for each manufacturers skin. Samsung was typically the worst. then LG. then htc. but yeah, hangouts has been laggy since I had the gs4. my tab s is laggy too. it's a combination for me of swiftkey and hangouts. swiftkey lags awfully in hangouts, but in other apps it's ok.

It was all bad. I don't know if I can relate it to any apps specifically as it seemed like something inherently wrong with the device's software that was loaded. Every app opened slowly. Switching tasks was glitchy and every menu scrolled choppy. It was terrible.

To counter that, the hangouts lag significantly decreased upon swapping devices. You are correct that there was always some lag in hangouts but on the old note 4 I would open the app and watch the spinning circle for up to 3 or 4 seconds at some points. It also put my keyboard to almost a hault. And the messages glitched every time one was sent. I get none of that now which is so relieving. So in my case it was warranted bc all my issues were solved.

It was kind of hard to describe. Honestly it just seemed slow. Didn't react to what I was doing hardly ever. There was always a delay that you could see was not touchwiz related. I had a note 3 that was stock at one point and rooted at another and both those devices were beating my brand new note 4. This for me was enough to at least go back and try a second one.

I think when we are talking about lags, we're talking about everything, not just one specific app. The entire phone is lags, like in settings, home screen, launching apps etc...

Mine only lags when I'm downloading apps while doing other things. If that's considered as a defective device then I can still return it, hoping to get a white one.

Hey...mine doesnt have any serious lag, as some are mentioming, but it is choppy as hell when scrolling through FB, Instagram, Messenger, Hangouts, etc etc...and web pages are slow loading, even on wifi...i mean, i hated my G3 due to lag, but in these mentioned instanced, it beat the crap out of this. I hate to think i might have made a mistake trading off of the G3

Those with lag issues have you disabled all the bloatware? This was huge for me as soon as I did the device ran smooth. Switched animations to .5 and now we are rocking with no hiccups except I can't update Shealth without it FC launching.

While I think it makes sense, part of "knows" is doesn't make sense. I don't know how a device would be defective and only lags on hangouts. Hangouts lags on my Galaxy S5, Note 4 and G3. Lags on my Tab S 8.4... it doesn't lag on my Original Moto X. I'd love to get my device swapped specially if it is defective but I don't see how it could be the case.
Also, when I first got my phone, hangouts wasn't lagging. I deleted my conversations and it wasn't lagging up until I had a decent amount of messages again...
Installed an older version of hangouts and doesn't lag. I mean, how can this be the phone and not the message?
I think lag on 1 app could be more related to the app itself and not hardware issue. Maybe hangouts isn't optimized to our screen resolution yet...

I was wondering this as well if it was more an issue on the app side rather than the hardware/OS. I have a couple apps/games which just seem to lag horribly but others are stupid fast.
Is there anyway to narrow down defective or just a laggy app?

I only see small lag in hangouts when i search for someone because it looks up also their hangouts chat that is all every other app works fine.
So im good ?

GS3 vs N4 multitasking

A quick question for you lucky people who have got your N4s:
What's the multitasking like? I'm hoping it must be flawless with 2gigs of RAM?
Can someone who has GTA3 tell me if you can pick up exactly where you left off, if you've gone out of the game to do other things for a while? On my current phone GS3, it has the annoying habit of kicking me back to the beginning of the last mission I started if I leave the game for any reason. Is this a RAM limitation on my phone, or does GTA3 do this on all phones?
EDIT: I should mention I'm using the international GS3 i9300, that only has 1GB RAM.

My biggest problem with my older phones was that they would constantly close out the apps that I needed to stay open like contacts, messaging, phone. It annoyed me that my old clam shell phones would instantly open contacts and my G2 couldn't open then faster than 4 seconds or so. This thing leaves all those open and they all open instantaneously.

Flawless x2. Seriously, apps stay in memory for a considerably greater amount of time than my Atrix 2, and obviously longer than my Captivate. It makes switching to almost anything smooth and snappy.
Flawless.

To be honest with you, multitasking has completely amazed me on the N4. On the Gnex, apps would close right away. With the N4, I go back to the browser at the end of the day, and the page I loaded hours earlier is still in memory In fact, I have yet to see my phone go below 950mb RAM remaining. I really think 2gb was overkill (1.5 would've easily done the job), but hey, I'm not complaining Also, keep in mind that I don't use any widgets at all, and I have very few things running in the background aside from Skype, so others may have a different experience.
Edit: As for GTA, it might be the game doing this. For example, Livingsocial is really annoying like that too. It doesn't matter if you just hit home and come back right away, it'll start from beginning. Yet, World of Goo, a much more demanding app, will come back exactly as I left it even when I leave to browse the internet for a while. Some developers really need to get with the program. I personally don't have GTA, so I couldn't tell you specifically.
Perfect. No other word to describe it. So much so I've noticed the phone stuttering a bit when scrolling (like a TINY bit, much less than any other android phone normally) and out of instinct opened the task killer to find 30+ applications all RUNNING. Including GTA3,

OK, I know its good, but 30 RUNNING? You do realize some stay in the launcher but aren't running, right? So you clicked them and they all didn't need to reload? I find that hard to believe. Someone should do a stress test of how many apps you can open before they need to reload when you go back to them and post it on YouTube

Laggy Messaging App

The stock messaging app seems to be laggy as all hell. Typing is sometimes painfully slow or just not responsive. Samsung told me to reset the cache but that didn't do anything.
Is there a message limit that hurts it? Is there something else that could potentially be causing this? Or is this just a problem with Touchwiz messaging app itself?

Honestly its terribly laggy. I had to resort purchasing an app. Enhanced Email and Touchdown work well if you need MS Exchange Support.
MS Exhcange Support isn't a big deal for me but thank you for the suggestion.
The gallery app has been giving me fits today too. I mean what's the point if making this super advanced phone if I have to reboot it more than I do my Windows machine.

This phone's screen is beautiful but the laggy performance is really bad. The SMS app is horrible.
I am terribly disappointed in this phone. The more I use it the more annoyed I get. I might just return it tomorrow and get another iPhone cause I can't stand the Lag anymore. Especially in a phone as speced out as this.

Concern Samsung and Android devices have a bad habit of not updating their devices and leaving their customers stranded. They pop out new model phones very frequently and once that happens they forget about older models and could care less about our problems.

I realize that which is part of the reason I got the S4, my S2 was no longer supported on here and battery was running dead all the damn time.
All this **** is enough to make me want to get an iPhone.
I to hated the laggy messaging. Even with 3rd party apps like SMS PRo and such it was still laggy and buggy.
Flashed CM10.1. AOSP stock Messaging app on CM10.1 is MUCH MUCH MUCH more responsive. I had the same frustrations coming from a iPhone 4S (Had 3G, 4, 4S prior for years).

I really don't understand. Samsung must realize that they are first and foremost manufacturing a phone. That's supposed to be used for calling and texting. They needed to pay 100 percent attention to these primary functions and make sure that they all worked properly. Instead of putting useless gestures and infrared they needed to insure the phone send and received texts properly. Major ball drop by samsung here. Very disappointed.

Agreed. This is why I have never used a Samsung device in the past and have stuck with iPhones since iPhone 3G before Android was even out there. Got tired of the small screen, wanted larger screen and higher resolution so jumped ****.
Really, try CM10.1. Its so much better without Samsung's bloatware. It's a whole different phone with it.
I also returned my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0" because of its laggyness last year until I tried CM9/CM10/CM10.1 on it. Totally made me think diferently. Also got me into the world of CM and flashing stuff so I knew what I was doing for my S4.

Try the J firmware.
If you can you should return it, if you can't, root and reduce the DPI 560 seems sweet. Also use a different launcher and keyboard. That will remove most of the lag, but not all.
The phone is not rubbish, LGs software and "configuration" on the other hand is a bit over aggressive:
- thermal throttling kicks in too early in my opinion (play a game for a few minutes and frames start dropping like crazy due to the processor being capped). the phone isn't that hot either - considering my N5 reaches temperatures where it feels a lot warmer than this and seems to not cap the speed that aggressively;
- there is a lot of useless software from LG running (updates, smart stay, quiet hours, bla bla bla) which eats up memory, processor usage, etc.
- be careful if you have an sd card in it (I had an old card in it and everything was twice as sluggish);
- avoid power management / battery monitoring tools (using GSAM battery monitor in my experience seemed to keep the phone awake more then it should resulting in earlier thermal throttling).
Ways to improve performance:
- keep the software that you need active (give up unnecessary widgets, services, syncs). keep only to the ones you need;
- try the phone without a sd card;
- try to keep it as cool as possible so it runs cool and doesn't throttle performance;
- (advanced) root ... and get rid of useless junk ...
- (advanced / risky) disable throttling and other safety features ...
I've changed keyboard
I'm loving it. Phone of the year. The m8's got a crappy camera and too much bezel, the s5... Well, it's the s5. Sony, yeah Sony, great contestant. Doesn't have the style, the flare tho. No nanny Fine finesse.

Do you experience lag when using the phone. I've experienced lag during basic operations like working with emails in Inbox, app drawer, recent apps, quick menu, scrolling nearly anywhere, etc.
The only lag I've seen thats really bad for me is when swiping to close apps.

I am using SwiftKey and the emoji's lag. In the phone app when scrolling through the history - terrible stutter...I mean really bad! Other than those two..which are not that important...the phone is great!
The contacts list in Hangouts is pretty laggy for me but that's the app, not the phone. I'm very happy with my purchase.
No Lag but I have had several crashes/restarts. I'm trying to figure out if I have an app causing me the problem. I'm using Nova Launcher and may try to use the Stock one for a bit to see if that is the cause.
I'm using nova. No issues like that. I've noticed a change since I did a factory reset. You may try that.
Since we are talking about lag and speed in this thread I figured I'd post this comparison between the Pure and the S6. I recommend you take a look, I was surprised at the results. His second time through the test is pretty telling.

What lag.
I get minimal stuttering whole scrolling through screens here and there but really nothing major

Coming from a G4 (lag central), I can't tell any lag. I did have one issue where I apparently had too many running apps/processes at once and the phone froze for a few seconds. I cleared all of my running apps, freeing RAM, and haven't had the issue since.

I've been experiencing stuttering around the device, it's not a big deal however. I think the 808 is struggling with the 1440p display.

This is what I'm seeing. Although my wife's phone seems pretty smooth.......
Since the Google App updated with the vertical scrolling feature, I am not getting much lag anymore.
I Have had the phone since the 16th and have had maybe one or two times when the multitasking screen lags just a little when 1st opened. That's all I have seen in my week of owning the Moto X.

Is everyone that's not experiencing lag using the 64gb version?

Delay when opening apps

So I've had this issue with both my S7 and S8 where whenever I click to open certain apps from my home screen, there's a noticeable delay between when I touch the icon to when the app actually opens.
This most notably happens on the Facebook, any and all internet browsers, the Play Store, and the Google app.
The thing that confuses me is that no one else seems to report this issue, nor have I experienced it on other brand phones.
Has any one else experienced this or have any ideas for a solution?

Glad to hear it's not just me. When I've mentioned if before, everyone just tells me I have a defective phone, which I don't.
At times it feels like Samsung phones are big diesel engine trucks - powerful, sure, but it takes them a while to really get moving.

I'm thinking it's either touch wiz or a common app..because my before i installed my apps on my note 8 it was super smooth

At the moment I have HTC U11(my daily driver) and as soon as I tap the shortcut, the app opens. When I compare it to my S8, I see the difference. I believe it could be Samsung's TouchWiz

Apparently it goes deeper than that because even when I use Nova launcher, the problem is there.
I also wonder if this is a problem that's only on the Snapdragon version, as I never remember my Exynos-powered Note 5 having any issue.

Possible, but U11 is also on the same Snapdragon 835, but I do believe in my case at least, U11 has UFS 2.1, but my S8 has UFS 2.0. I do see the difference when apps get installed or updated. U11 is doing it faster.

I'm not really knowledgeable enough to make these kinds of guesses, but maybe it's like a kernel issue? Because obviously different companies have different results with the same processor, so maybe Samsung just has poor optimization?
Either way, it just feels like a really unnecessary flaw for the phone.

I would have said Yes for some big apps like heavy title games but for the ones you've mentioned(Facebook, Google, Store and etc), those are actually the fastest to open for me similar to system apps' speed.
PS. I'm the type of person to clear all recent apps and turn off the phone like 5 times a day because I'm a little OCD about an apps that might drain the battery. Lol

I only turn my phone off once a week, but I've tried pretty much every combination to see if it fixed the problem. Cleared apps a lot, "locked" the problem apps in memory to see if that helped them load faster, etc.
Nothing really seemed to make a difference.

If you want it to feel "faster'' you can go into developer options and turn off the animations for opening and closing the apps. Its a "fix" but in reality it isnt doing anything different. Its just a Samsung being a Samsung. If you want a phone that opens and does what its suppose to when you touch it get a Pixel

The developer options thing wouldn't work as this delay happens before the animation even starts.
And but yeah, I do have a Pixel 2 XL preordered.

Hmm.. I'm not so sure that these problems is related to Samsung exclusively..
My problems starts few years ago, when I had Nexus 6p.The same problem continued with iPhone 6s plus and 7 plus, then Galaxy S8 plus and now with Note 8.
I was sure that I had and have a problem with my home Wi-Fi (because as you know, WiFi can cause a lag) but when I saw this thread, well I don't know what to think anymore. I'm running out of ideas, definitely.
I've tried everything ,but no luck.
Any idea, potential solution will be very welcome..
This happens to me when my 4g reception or wifi is really not optimal. Always with internet related applications. Games , productivity etc.
What did you do about that?Solution?
I have to confirm this problem. Definitely, those problems are related to WiFi connection, in my case. My phone flying on LTE.
Does anybody has any idea, what caused these problems?
