Suddenly broken with an extremely hot screen - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have been using this S4 for about 16 months now with no issues. I have no installed any custom roms. Everything is mostly as it came.
The other day I was in a call when it suddenly disconnected. Then when I tried to call back I saw it showed no signals (circle with a diagonal line). I noticed that the screen was somewhat hotter but didn't think much of it as the phone usually gets a little hotter during use. I restarted the phone in hopes of getting things back to normal and to make my call. But it didnt help. It still showed no signals. I the searched online and tried to change Settings -> more networks -> mobile networks. And then it gave me an error saying that there is no SIM card.
Then I did what any customer service desk would ask me to do and did a factory reset. But still a no go. Then I started to realize that the screen is extremely hot and the battery drains super fast. I removed the SIM and started the phone. Still it got extremely hot. I turned the phone off and connected it to charger, still extremely hot. For the touch, it the upper part of the screen and the camera lens area on the back. I read that this is where the CPU resides. Battery doesnt seem hot.
My warranty period is over. So am I doomed? I read that this is a hardware issue and motherboard needs to be replaced.
Any suggestions before I switch to Xperia Z3?
Thanks guys

Treo Pro running hot

I have a customer with one of these phones who complains it is running hot, so hot they have to move it away from their ear.
I have one too, configured with push email, and it's fine. Is the high temperature normal? Their phone also drops calls. I think the phone should probably be replaced but wondered if there was a known problem and simple solution. I access it using Pocket Controller and it's set up fine.
Sometimes the customer leaves bluetooth on alot even though they don't use it all the time, and with bluetooth it sometimes routes calls to the headset, sometimes not. Oh, and sometimes the phone radio turns off by itself! Sounds defective to me!!
Any thoughts?
One last thing, is there a way to permanently turn it off when it's not in use? Switching off the phone radio isn't enough.
Thanks.
You can't turn off the Treo Pro. Turning on\off doesn't effect the power drain that much to heat the battery a lot.
The only thing that could get the device a lot warmer than with normal use is turning on WiFi or by making long phone calls..
My guess would be that the device has either a battery problem or something is wrong with the hardware of the Treo Pro. It's not normal that you have to move the device from your face because of the heat.
Quickest way to test if it's the TP or the battery is to try a battery if you have one
Thanks mccune. I'll contact the suppliers.
Regards
Mike
My phone runs extremely hot if i have processes running in the background, like, Google Maps...
I think we have to make a difference between 'hot' and 'warm'. I don't believe that there is any chance of someone getting his ear burnt.
I've had my treo pro for few days now, and have noticed that the temperature at the back cover rises when the handset is with the gps in use, especially when searching for satellites
Running hot..quick battery burn...Winterface!
I wonder if the owner is using Winterface? I tried (and liked) this launcher, but it cut my battery life in half and the unit felt very warm all the time. Trying Mobile Shell for now...
They weren't using anything other than what was supplied on the phone. They just made a lot of calls.
The phone was returned and my customer had the same problem with the replacement. I think what feels warm to most feels hot to them (sensitive ears).
The phone has been replaced with a Nokia E71 (supports exchange mail).
Seems runs cool and the battery lasts ages.

[Q] Battery issues: Please inform

I have recently found that in the past couple of days, if I charge my battery to full it will lose charge, and reset itself, exceptionally quickly.
I can have a full charge one minute, my girlfriend can call for ten minutes, and then the battery will die; when I turn my phone back on, instantly, the light will flash and the 'battery low' symbol will appear in the right hand corner of the screen; the strange thing is, when I leave the phone for ten minutes, or more, the phone will suddenly come back to life again, and start working as usual; as you can imagine, quite an annoying situation, especially when your girlfriend thinks you are constantly hanging up on her........hahaha
I have taken steps, and ordered a new battery, but I'm unsure if this is the issue, or whether or not it is the original orange rom that is the problem. It'd be of much help if someone can inform me on this issue, whether they have experienced it before, or, if they can give me any steps to change this..it'd be much appreciated.

I've also removed the plastic casing surrounding the phone, just incase the phone is overheating.

hi
1. how old is ur phone may be its more than a yr old and its time for a new battery mine is around 2yrs and the battery is draining fast but then i gave it to my wife whos usage is not much and its ok for her
battery life is something u cant really comment on some get great life some get not all that good life mine was quite good for all the usage and flashing i did
but im sure ur new battery will give u better battery life i dont thing theirs any thing wrong with ur phone this as per my experience thats all
In response
The problem that I have is that it only occurs when I'm on the phone; the phone conversation will last between 2-5 mins and then just cut off and reset; the phone works perfectly fine when I'm doing any other task- I can stream programmes on myplayer, etc. So, all I can do is wait for my new battery and hope it's a battery fault.
I bought the phone second hand, so the battery and the phone maybe more than a year old, so I just have to wait and see. It just seems a bit random, especially since the phone was working perfectly about a week ago. It seems like something has affected the battery, or something that won't allow me to make or accept any incoming phone calls.
Oh, and thank you Haree for your reply.
Regards,
Nick

[Q] Phone is very warm and drains battery, even when OFF!!!

About 3 weeks ago my phone started acting up with fast battery drain (about 20-25% per hour) and would be quite warm (90F in normal room temperature while idle).
Some notes:
It's warmest around the camera lens
CPU use is low/nil
Turned on power saver and airplane mode, same deal
Becomes even warmer if I charge it while phone is on
I've swapped in another N3 battery, same deal
I've taken out the sim and memory card (Samsung EVO)
I've done factory resets and formatted the memory card, same deal
It doesn't matter whether I have strong or weak reception.
And the best part...
the phone is slightly warm and the battery drains even when powered off (about 10-15% per hour)
I was on Hyperdrive 7 (4.3 and MJE) when this happened. Took this chance to update to the DeOdex 4.4.2 and now on NC2 but whether on stock rom or Hyperdrive 8 or Alliance, the problem still persisted.
I've tried searching for anyone with the same problem as me both on these forums and on Google, no luck. Closest I found was a bunch of guys in Singapore where going to another SEA country overworked their antenna but their problem was fixed as soon as they returned to Singapore.
Any suggestions?
p.s. I bought this phone used. Assuming I have to call Samsung for warranty service, will they want me to be the original purchaser? I don't have any documents showing the original purchase although the phone's manufacturing date is December 2013 so I'm clearly (though barely) still within the 1 year warranty period.
For warranty I believe they ask for the serial of the device also I had nothing but issues with Samsung reps so word to the wise call get it replaced don't tell them it's used act like it's yours and get the most of the warranty if someone gives you issues hang up call back completely different person will answer and eventually give you what you want. Took me 3 months to fix my charger issue on my note 3 5 reps lied to me saying it was shipping when in fact they just wanted to push me on to someone else and I wasn't even in the system when they act like there looking you up. I eventually talked to a manager that said they did everything wrong from telling me how to ship arrival etc so this is my advice don't give up don't listen to all the reps most don't know anything about phones if so ask to talk to a manager or supervisor that is golden good luck

They wanted Proof of Purchase (receipt) from me when I wanted just a cable replacement....so you may be SOL if you don't have proof you purchased it.

After updating to 4.4.4, my phone was doing the same thing you described. I went into Wi-Fi settings/advanced, and turned off "notify me when Wi-Fi connections are available"; changed "keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" to only when plugged in; and turned off "always allow scanning". After changing these settings, my phone is no longer overheating when plugged in or sitting idle and my battery consumption is back to normal. Apparently my Wi-Fi was constantly scanning, whether on or off, and keeping my cpu clock almost maxed. Again, after changing the settings, the cpu clock has settled back down.

I have the same problem. Where is this WiFi Settings/ ADVANCED???
Found it- Thanks...
I had the exact same problem. It worked fine for months and suddenly wouldn't hold a charge. Same issue, even turning it off and trying to charge, it couldn't keep up. I tried different chargers and batteries and even did an ODEN back to stock. Nothing worked. Then suddenly it quit draining the battery, with no explanation. Very odd.

Nexus 4 radio issues, battery issues, constant reboots

I purchased my nexus 4 on release from the Google Playstore (UK) over 2 years ago now, recently updated it to stock 5.01 and have been bombarded with problems.
When using the phone, after about an hour of use it will suddenly ask me to re-input my sim card pin (I'm assuming this is a radio issue). After doing so, more often than not the phone will then just shut down - sometimes with a screeching noise?! At this point the battery still has around 50-60% left, when I then turn the phone on again, the battery suddenly drops and I usually see the figure to around 1-10%. This has required me to charge the phone 2-3 times a day in order for it to function, extremely annoying that the radio seems to fail and not pick up any network signal after the phone drops past 60% battery.
I've attached an image of my battery life to show what I mean about the drop - it's quite frustrating as I've looked after the phone extremely well so I can't understand why these problems are occurring.
Any help would be much appreciated!

To be honest, they all sound like gremlins from old data left in the partitions from the previous OS versions. I am on 5.0.1 and experienced none of those issues, in fact, it runs like butter. I would suggest a full wipe and see if that fixes the issue. Residual data can cause these sorts of random issues.
OP I have the issue with radio after a fresh factory image install. I have signal but cellular data will stop flowing. This is intermittent. Switching to airplane mode sometimes fixes the problem, but sometime I have to reboot. Considering going back to KitKat.
If you using android 5.0.0-5.0.1 - this can be android bags. i have this too it make me crazy!
I managed to get round to rebooting today (had exams lately so literally no time to sort the phone out). Did a factory reset and still the same issues, in fact it's gotten progressively worse since the last time I posted, battery cuts out at around 80% (switched off today at 87%). I get about 40 mins on screen time and bam, shuts down, I'm able to switch it back on in a minute or two, where I then see it down to about 15%. The fact that it's continuously asking me for my sim card pin is insanely frustrating, even more so when it shuts down RIGHT after i put it in.

Battery drains fast and is always warm even after a battery change

[TL;DR]
Phone battery suddenly drains faster than usual, drains to 0% overnight. Problem still persist even after April update and after battery change. Can't find any solutions. Help me.
Hey, so about a week ago something very strange happened to my Mi A1 and got worse overtime. So what happened was my battery went from 80+% to 0% overnight. I woke up confused and just recharged it and didn't think too much. After a full charge, I noticed the battery drains abit more than usual and had to plug it in constantly. Before going to bed I charged my phone to 100% to see if it would drain to 0% again. It did. As time passes the problem gets worst. The phone started getting warm when charging (around 40+°C up to 50°C) then after a while the phone runs warm even when not charging (never goes below 40°C). My phone always used to run at about 30-35°C even when charging. I changed the battery myself because there was no warranty on it but it didn't fix the problem. However it did help abit. The battery drains ever so slightly slower now but still drains to 0% overnight. It still runs warm but now it does go below 40°C (rarely). Before and after the battery change, the discharging rate is about 700mA and sometimes reaches 1000+mA (used an app called Ampere, not too sure how accurate it is). The phone was also warmer than usual when charging even when the phone was off (before and after the battery change). I tried factory resetting to see if that does anything but had no luck. I also tried using a Wakelock detector app to see if there was an app excessively triggering a wakelock but all seemed normal. I even tried downloading a "battery calibration app" which obviously didn't work. So I feel like it's a hardware problem.
Now here's what I did and did not do to the phone before the problem happened. What I did was I do charge the phone quite alot most of the time. What I mean by that is when it hits about 30% I'll plug it in but I never leave it plugged in after a full charge or charge it overnight and I seldom let the battery drain to below 10%. Even so, the phone never got warm like how it is now. That's about all I did to it. Now what I didn't do was, I never tried to install custom ROMs or root/modify my phone in anyway except for the post about how to enable 4G+ which didn't work for me.. My phone is completely stock. I also didn't install any new apps from the playstore or from any 3rd party sites nor were there any updates for any apps installed in my phone. I've had the same apps installed for a couple of months before this happened. I also haven't dropped my phone for a couple of months. I only dropped it less than 5 times from short heights and I have a very rugged case on. I also didn't use any 3rd party chargers. I'm still using the charging brick and cable that came with the phone. I have tried using other chargers that are 2A but no luck. So basically I didn't do anything out of the ordinary prior to this problem.
Just some extra information
1. The hottest part of the phone is at the top right corner of the back. I assume the CPU is there (?).
2. It happened before the April update. It was the same before and after the April update.
3. Phone is running on Android Pie if that wasn't clear
4. The phone is only 10 months old
5. My phone is the Global ROM version
6. Performance wise, its still responsive and snappy. Doesn't lag or freeze or anything.
6. I always have mobile data on and use it as hotspot for my laptop at uni. I have been using it like that for the past 9 months. However the problem happened when I was at home during sem break so I was mostly connected to Wi-Fi.
Sorry for such a long post. I hope somewhere out there, there is someone who can help me or other people that have a similar problem so we can fix it.
Thanks.
In the upper right corner, should be the modem area.
Try holding the phone on airplane mode during the night and monitor drain.
Also, try changing the SIM slot and do an APN reset. If this fails too, try changing your SIM card or if u can, try another operator SIM.
If you changed any value with QXDM PRO , try and put back the default values.
Good luck
