Make sure you check your receipt - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 General

So I get home and happen to check my receipt from Thursday when I bought the note 4 and I noticed they charge me a $30 upgrade fee when I paid full retail. I called customer service and they fixed it and refunded my money immediately. Just a FYI to check your receipt.

Not the best buy loophole "keep existing plan" and use the same SIM card that your using now. I can still add UDP plans through Apple with no problem.

1.) i have the money.
2.) i REFUSE to sign on contract with verizon and lock myself into a 2 year agreement.
3.) what business is it of yours whether we buy off contract or don't? yeah, we've heard of the "best buy" loophole, which was eliminated back in August. i'm not risking losing my unlimited data when i have the means to purchase my phone outright, thanks.

Search on slickdeals "upgrade and keep unlimited data" you will find all your answers there. I was able to upgrade all 5 of my lines with no problem. The key is to never use the SIM card that ships with the phone!

sorry dude, it's just that your post came off as a little snarky. i know of the way to do it, but personally, it's my luck that i'd do it and somehow lose unlimited data. i've been with verizon for 17 years, but i just don't trust them whatsoever anymore. i can't leave bc of unlimited data and bc my plan is so old that 3 phones is super cheap, so yeah, that's why i'm not gonna bother locking into a 2 year contract. i buy phones all the time, so that's just my thing

Hey I don't blame you, I don't trust them either to a point where I can't even go into their stores because they always want to pull up your account and look around , even when buying an accessory so I stopped going there. Now I just go to authorized dealers whenever I need a sim activated and what not.

yup i hear you. i ran an authorized retailer for 2 years and i've heard my share of horror stories about corporate...which i already knew bc i went there before i worked there. but yeah, i buy screen protectors and they need to pull up my account? i mean i understand to see if there's any discounts, sure, but other than that, they just want your upgrade date so that they can try to sell you a damn phone. meh oh well.

For me, being in the small minority, I'm actually in contract until October 2015 due to their new 2 year contract and keep unlimited data "glitch" last year.

Here is something I've never been able to understand. Hopefully someone can help me get this. I hear about this method and that method to keep unlimited data. I hear about dummy phones and switching sims., etc... on contract is 299. Off contract is 699. Difference of $400....over 2 years. Doesn't a dummy phone, or line cost money? I've heard 10 a month, so in two years 240 dollars spent. That leaves $160 left. .....over 2 years? ??? That comes to about a $7/month savings. Ummmmm.....I see a lot of effort for $7/month put in by a lot of people. Am I missing some other super secret method to keep unlimited data? I paid full retail for mine, saved the 200, and kept unlimited, but im also not worried about the Verizon police either.

As someone who has unlimited data on 2 of my lines (wife and mine) I'm not sure this is entirely true. I've upgraded 3 times since they stopped unlimited data and the note 4 makes 4 times. I'm doing it the same way I've always done it, I even tell vzw I'm doing it and no one (at verizon) has ever told me I can't so it.

sorry but strictly in my opinion, buying top-end phones off contract is like ricky bobby trying to drive with the cougar in the car... not a smart move
but hey, everyone is entitled to do whatever the hell they want with their hard earned money so I dont get why others try and tell them what to do with it.... hope we get root soon!!!!!!!!!!! cheers!

So my question to those of you on unlimited data is .... If you look at the amount of data you use on a regular basis, then figure in the cost of a full price phone, are you actually saving much money over what you would pay if you just had a normal contract? My guess is a few people are getting in Verizon's pocket but for the most part you aren't coming out that far ahead if any. That's why Verizon doesn't close the loophole. These guys run a billion dollar business. You think they don't know everything about their business. They have people that read these forums.
It's the same reason Cspire offers unlimited plans because they know that most people don't use much data. Only a few use a ton.

I know a lot of users who use a ton of data me and my girlfriend use between 20 to 30 gb each a month. Our combined bill is only 145 bucks that's with 2 smartphone and a feature phone. I can't speak for all but in my case the price I'd pay for that much data on a new plan would just be ridiculous, so for a heavy user (anyone using over 8gb) then I'd say never lose unlimited.

It's basically all over the android blogs as well as engadget. Here's a link to one article:
http://www.tmonews.com/2012/08/t-mo...unlimited-data-plan-thats-actually-unlimited/
But there are still plans above that, for more money? There must be some catch or else everyone would get this new plan, and no other.
The "Unlimited" plan they're proposing doesn't include the tethering option. Rooted phones don't apply, we can tether anyways.
I'll be jumping on this, I just need to figure out what phone to upgrade too...yeah, perplexing questions.

The purpose of multiple plans is that there are some people that do not use that much data so why pay for it? I personally don't tether and was grandfathered in to unlimited data of 5 gb before being throttled. I am mostly on wifi all day so it doesn't count towards the limit. If you're not going to tether, then there is low risk of hitting that limit unless you're watching movies all day.

Okay, first thing i saw when looking at that link. was "DATA FEATURE" meaning something added to a base price of your minutes? I remember seeing something like this when 3G became popular on verizon's network. They charged like 30 bucks for your minutes and then 25 extra for data and 20 extra for MMS. It was a while ago, but it pretty much just splits up the fees. Like instead of one fee for everything they split it up. It looks "cheaper" that way.
But i do feel a little skeptic, as said before, there are more expensive plans than this, one would think they would make this the most expensive weather or not you had MobileHotspot option. Plus there is no fine print, im certain T-Mobile knows that you can have a rooted phone tether. However i do remember someone over on PPCGeeks tell me that the way they will block tethering is by User Agent. But i dont see that working because you can spoof a User Agent inside your mobile browser so that you can get the full website not the mobile version.
Unlimited T-Mobile data sure would make me consider getting a contract... Hell i KNOW i would get a contract for that. I use data like its nothing. Price you pay when your father is still using dial up
Well i just spoke to customer service and they didnt mention anything being "truly unlimited". I asked about it and she said i can only get the new 5gb plan bundle with mobile hotspot,Which cost 5 dollars more. So as of now if you want the upgrade any service you're forced to pay extra for something most people had for free.
Edit: well i just spoke to them about the the plan was able to switch. In all the I'm paying the same amount as I was before.

It is related because you are threatening AT&T with the exact program to get them to lower your rates. Also truth be told just tell them you need your rates lowed and they will. You don't need to tell them you are leaving. They put you in a high rate tier on purpose so they have some bargaining room if they need it.

@duhbanjopicker that sucks man that tmobile does that for you. i dont think you are special to them or something, because i have unlimited data all the way, no speed throttle
I love what this is doing for the industry. If you look at the earnings reports for the big wireless industry players they even have a metric for how much they are screwing their customers. It's called the ARPU or average revenue per user. If it doesn't go up then they aren't doing a very good job. Tmobile is single handedly attacking the areas of the industry that have the highest margins. It's going to be great to be a consumer the next few years if this keeps up. Competition is heating up.

"Special to them"????????? I'm not "special" to anyone, corporate. My opinion is T-Mobile SUCKS. Please pardon my scream. But I personally had a terrible experience with T-Mobile. To those who have good service and a good experience more power to ya. But this promotion will not move me away from At&t. I have 3 unlimited data plans, unlimited text, mobile to mobile, and 1400 anytime at around $150.00...... No thanks T-mobile!!!!! Nice try though!!

If there's a positive in this deal, your analysis is spot on IMO!!!! Hopefully this isn't some scheme, to move all of these customers away and then say Sprint and T-Mobile merge. That would not be good!

They are wanting you to go to T-Mobile in hopes you hate them so bad you have to come back. That way you've lost your unlimited data plan.
I chatted with AT&T to see if they could come anywhere near T-mobiles price ( currently I pay for 3 phones on family plan, $175 after 17% premier discount w/3 subsidized phones). Nope.
Even with 3 phones on their payment plan, it's $90 service + ~$24x3 phones = $162
What really got me annoyed was when I asked simply if they are going to lock the bootloaders on every future Android phone. The rep answered that they most likely would and stated that he had the Note 3 on T-Mobile and knows for a fact that their bootloader is locked too.
After 10 years, I'm going to jump.
I called AT&T on behalf of my mother-in-law. Her account has a subsidized Note 3, iP5c, a G-Tab 7 that was free with the N3, and an older iPhone that has 11 months remaining on its contract; all on a 10GB Mobile Share data plan. The N3, G-Tab 7, and iP5c were all added to the account within the past 60 days.
Without much effort I was offered $45 in billing credit each month for three months. I asked about an early upgrade for the older iPhone and was offered a N3 for $99. That's a no-go because my father-in-law's not about to learn Android. They made a note on the account that the older iPhone can be upgraded to another iPhone when it hits six months remaining on its contract. The rep was nice and you can tell AT&T's serious about not losing (certain) customers to T-Mobile. I'm guessing there using some type of tool to figure out what a customer's worth to figure out what if anything to offer to retain them.
Hmm.. maybe I'll give them a buzz when I get home.. like to see what they can do with 6 smartphones and 2 tablets on a 6GB Share Plan.. current, I'm at $346 per month !!

Yes!! I started service in Sept of last year. I just called and they gave me a discount on my data plan and offered me $45 discount. I don't know if it'll be for 3 months. I didn't care as long as they lowered my data plan. I guess there are multiple options they can provide. I just told them I walked into a T-Mobile store and inquired about a phone. Rep asked me if I liked the service of AT&T. I said yes and he put me on hold...the rest is history!!
It worked for me!!
I tried to get them to pop a discount over chat with no luck. Ill be calling them tomorrow

I had a 10gb plan and VZW upgraded my plan to 15gb for free. I'm not complaining . It also helps to cut the cost of the phones on the edge program because on a 10gb plan a month you get a $25 credit on each line that you have a phone on the edge program. I upgraded using edge and will pay only $5 a month for the N4.

I think both are highway robbery. Cable should be unlimited. Period. It's all hard wired. At least cellphones they have the excuse of being over the air

I'm just sad that it has come to this. I'm on an unlimited government plan (we get unlimited plus you can get upgrade costs) and would still be stuck on sprint if I had to deal with these kinds of costs.
It's really ashame what att/verizon/comcast has done with these metered billing plans.

Prepaid customers get treated like second class citizens. When I went to go buy my note I was told it cost $769 with tax. I was like don't it retail for $749? They said that's post paid. Whatever. I asked if there were any promotional discount or rebates. The said there's a $50 rebate on accessories. So I asked if I bought a $40 case, I'd get $10 off my phone? Nope. Postpaid only.

Unlimited data here but this is a great thing can only help people on Att sprint and veriz0n
He also did address the new wideband spectrum
Low and behold I finally got band 12 today. Let me tell you I was only getting 5mbp down. Now I'm getting 25 down in my bedroom. I live in Fort Lauderdale.
5 down is 2x what I'm getting. Alleged LTE. Bah! No, I don't live on a farm. I am in San Antonio, TX, a city of over 1.4 million people, and I still get data speeds that are so last century.
Glad I'm still on the unlimited data plan(Granfatherd)

You know they have new plan that just came out. 2 linen completely unlimited for $100. I use to be on the old grandfathered in plan but now I'm saving 20 bucks.
Think they just bumped the speeds here in Springfield Ohio was getting 5 down 2 up now I'm getting 12-15 down 5 up constant
Prepaid customers get treated like second class citizens because prepaid plans aren't where the revenue is generated. If prepaid guys aren't ready to commit to the company, the company can't be committed to them. I'm on the $30 plan, I know this update doesn't affect me, I know this sucks, but it makes business sense.

Be wary of any new plans that come out, on any carrier. Newer doesn't always mean better. In fact, most of the time, it means quiet the opposite.

This is great to hear. Your saying even though I've never bought extra data like the fine print says, I'm still going to get the stash and 10gb of data?
And how exactly did you confirm this?

I called them 2 different times and both reps said the same thing..
Color me skeptical. The TMO website clearly states that you must have postpaid for at least 3 Gb of data to be eligible.

How I got an early Nexus 6 upgrade with AT&T

Here's how I upgraded over 3 months early...
I went on AT&T's website and opened a chat window and said, "I'd like to upgrade to the Nexus 6 today and pay the 2-year contract price ($250). If you can't do this for me then I will be cancelling my contract today." I was told that I could not upgrade early and that I'd have to call 800-331-0500 (or 611 from my phone) and select the options for contract cancellation.
I called and told the woman "I'd like to cancel my contract so that I can switch to T-Mobile." And of course she replied, "I'm sorry to hear that. May I ask why you're switching?" I said, "...because AT&T is too expensive and I want to upgrade to the Nexus 6 and don't want to use AT&T Next." Then without any hassle, she offered to let me upgrade for the 2-year contract price. I went in fully prepared to pay the ETF since I thought for sure they would deny my request so they could stop my grandfathered unlimited data plan. She waived the upgrade fee, applied a $10 discount that I didn't know about, and even sent it overnight FedEx.
I'm sure you XDA experts have had better upgrade experiences, or maybe thought I got a bad deal, but I'm happy, and now hopefully now more people out there can upgrade early, too.

Well, you didn't really trick AT&T, they tricked you... After your 2 year agreement with them is over, they will make over $1000 from you, that's what you will end up paying for the $650 32 GB Nexus 6....

I would've had to pay for monthly service regardless what company I went with. Anyway I'm OK with sticking with AT&T since their service is pretty good where I live and I keep my unlimited data.

You pay the same every month regardless if you buy a phone or not if you plan on staying with your carrier for the two years of the contract.

So you are paying full price $70 x 24 months + the full price for the phone $650 = $2330.
While I pay $71 (after tax) x 24 months + discounted price for the phone $300 = $2004.
Looks like signing a 2 year contract with ATT looks better.

I routinely use 10+ GB of LTE/HSPA+ data monthly (Sometimes over 15. One month I used nearly 35GB.) and I've never been throttled.

tmobile throttles the limited data plasns, but it doesnt cut them out or charge you more. but their unlimited plans are actually unlimited, unlike other carriers. last month i used 39gb of data.

Thanks for letting me know guys
Meh never mind.
I'm happy that you got what you wanted, but with such a steep subsidize price I oppted for the 24 month financing and paid 0 down and only raise my bill by $22 per month. I think it's a win win either way, but my rule of thumb is if you've got to pay more than $150-200 then you're better off going the payment route if you have the 10 GB data plan or higher which I do.
