Wifi Tether Router working with tweaks - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 General

wanted to report that the 'Wifi Tether Router' app is working for me. had to tweak default settings per the developer:
Interface wlan0
Method 3 - HostApd
Encryption wpa2-psk
Channel 1
Drivers nl80211
"HostApd Patch" <- CHECKED
"No Firmware Reload" <- UNCHECKED
"No Disable WiFi" <- CHECKED (ONLY if you can't see the WiFi Network)
There is a bit of delay after first connecting to the hotspot; got a 'no internet connection' but after 30 seconds or so it connected.
Also, the app displays 'loading' at times, which freezes the interface. If you hit the running app key (bottom left button) and go back
into the app, it is responsive again.

Thanks, worked well. Had to check disable wifi box for network to be visible.

Didn't work for me...then it did!

Re-installed, tried this. Still nothing. Was just going to ask for help and tried it again (a couple days later)... boom. Works. Not sure what needed reset either on my computer or phone...but the above is correect. Dev suggested I uncheck HostApd Patch. I did that prior as well and kept it that way. ALL WORKS.

mine is working fine with HostApd unchecked and was on channel 11 (I thought I had it on 1). Also, I find I need to have something other than the default SSID and password for the any of the clients to connect.
The biggest issue is my Surface Pro is switching the the limited connectivity (IP 169.xxx.xxx.xx). I think this has to do more with the phone switch between 3G and LTE, which use to not be an issue.
My only disappointment is that the do not broadcast SSID does not seem work on the Note 4; it didn't work on the Note 2 either.

Nope. You only need one of them for WiFi hotspot.
GalaxyTools from what I read, also gives other things you can do your phone. WiFi Tether Router is just for WiFi hotspot and is a paid app, where as GT is free. I don't know how well GT developers in maintaining the app for bugs and updates, but WTR are active; you don't see to many bug updates because it's fairly mature app, but they do update it fairly quickly for Android updates or some new devices.

The updates for GT are terrific they have the latest phones in mind ie Note 4 edge ect bottom line user preference pay don't pay or find another way

I've used both and like both, but for different reasons.
Wifi Tether
Is a paid app, but cheap @ $3.00
Works great and stays updated.
Only wireless hotspot, no USB tethering
I've used it over one year, not one issue
GalaxyTools 4 root user
Free - 0 dollars
Works great and stays updated
Can use the USB tethering
Find it on Google Play Store (search for: idone)
I've used it for a month now and not issues as of yet.

No prob; Thanks for the link to 'Galaxy Tools'. I'm going to give that a try and see if it works better than the WiFi Tether Router' app. It seems nicer that it is using the native hotspot. I couldn't seem to connect Chromecast to the Wifi Tether app so maybe that will work with the Galaxy Tools approach. (Streaming movies via Chromecast to my TV with Chromecast has alot of halts and pauses with the Android playstore movies so I want to try hooking Chromecast to my Note's wifi rather than my home Wifi.)

I've done this with the NoteII using WiFi Tether Router. The trick, the Note becomes the router. It's no longer a client of the network; I know it's odd since you can still do internet activity, but it has no IP with the network you created with the hotspot. So, you need a another device to setup up the Chromecast such as another Andriod Mobile device or laptop. Then you need to use that device to be able to choose things to stream to it.
My initial thoughts, this will remain the case with GalaxyTools.
I was able to sling BBC iPlayer to the Chromecast for a bit. But something happened and my VPN app and WiFi Tether don't play nice together at the same time on the same device. Maybe this is not the case with GalaxyTools.

Is this still working for everyone? I have tried galaxy tools and it will not get the native app to work. It keeps sending me to Call sprint to add the hot spot capability.
I have also tried wifi tether router and no matter what recommended tweaks i have used, its not broadcasting.
Any ideas? did the latest minor update from sprint mess this up?
Edit: Rooted Sprint Note 4.4.4

I've used both, and they both work.
GalaxyTools requires you to go to the setup through GT and for the initial launch. It's probably a good idea to launch through it every time.
WiFi Tether Router:
interface: wlan0
method: 3-HostApd
drivers: nl80211
WiFi mode: WiFi - G (I've never tried N)
Channel: 1
Oddly enough, I found the settings that worked best were the exact same settings that I use the Galaxy Note 2.
In addition, I could have sworn that app was updated to have detect and set the settings for the Galaxy Note 4. You may want to try to uninstall, reboot phone, and reinstall.
I also found I needed to set SSID, password and encyrption type. The default and no encryption didn't work. I also found the do not broadcast SSID caused the clients not to connect.
I don't know if it was needed, but if you're going to use these kind of tools, it's usually a good idea to install BusyBox. A lot of people use the Linux applettes/tools for their applications. There's a free version. v1.22.1-stericson is working for me; I've use other versions that borked WiFI Tether Router, TrevE Mods WiFi Thether (on the GN2).
Don't forget to reboot after making changes in the WTR configuration. I find not everything takes till after a reboot. I also assume you granted permission to whatever SuperUser application you're using. The app does not root access.

My tether works after root and im on nk2 and i didnt have to use galaxytool

As far as I know, you don't need to install HTCSync to use USB-tethering.

The downside to the free version of PDANet is that it doesn't allow SSL.

Well, yes ... you guys get a message that "access control" is disabled because of a missing kernel-feature. "CONFIG_NETFILTER_XT_MATCH_MAC" is missing!
See: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/wiki/FAQ
So yes, "access control" is unavailable for your devices.
But what do you get instead:
1) Infrastructure mode - your phone acts like "a real" accesspoint!
2) Strong WPA-encryption instead hacked-in-seconds WEP-encryption.
Your choice!
BTW ... if you want the access-control back install a custom kernel (if possible) which has above option/feature enabeld. Also include CONFIG_PROC_FS, CONFIG_IKCONFIG, and CONFIG_IKCONFIG_PRO so that the phone dumps the kernel-config to /proc/config.gz and the app will be able to detect it correctly!
Custom Kernels are not possible on the X, and most likely won't be, since it doesn't look like anyone with the know-how is still working on hacking the locked boot loader.
This is my last Moto product because of it (even though the Atrix is making me wet my pants).
I was mistaken, it is using Infrastructure mode. As I mentioned, I wasn't able to test at the time, and thought Access Control was Infrastructure Mode.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
And who cares about Access Control? It's not necessary now that we have strong WPA/WPA2 encryption, and of course a true AP with the Droid X and Droid 2.
Besides, I believe Access control relies on the MAC Address which can be easily spoofed since it's sent as plain text. You guys rock!!!
My wife just got a D2 Global. I have a DX and I am trying to get her a wireless tether setup. I also ket the same kernel message. Has anybody had luck with the 3G hot spot? I could use some help! Thanks.

You do understand that the "error" message has nothing to do with the normal usage of the program. It will work just fine even if you get that error. You just cannot use the "Access Control" portion of the program which was a way to limit the devices that could connect to the phone. However, as stated by other members, you don't need access control at all. Just use WPA encryption and a strong password. This is a more secure connection than using WEP and access control.
Thanks for the heads up
Do I need to turn 3g mobile hotspot on for wireless tether to work? I see the network on my laptop, but keeps saying it can't connect. Any tricks? Thanks!

Droid X rooted and Nook Color rooted. Works great! Solves the infrastructure problem Had to uninstall and re-install as directed, but that did the trick. A big thank you!

Extremely slow browsing on 3g network.

I am having this particular problem with my 3g network. I am currently using a BSNL 3g prepaid SIM card in India. It's not the fastest bit it is quite reliable. I could easily manage 2-3 Mbps download speed which is more than enough for me for on the go usage. And it's pretty cheap too @ Rs 403 for 3gb with a validity for 90 days. That's less than USD 10.
Initially I used this SIM card on my Nokia E71. The browsing was more than OK. After I switched my SIM to my 7.7, I have been having some problems during browsing. The pages are not loading and the data transfer seems to be stuck. But if I am downloading something, it's pretty fast. I am currently using dolphin browser, Firefox, overscreen and stock browser in order of preference. What could be causing this problem?

In Wireless and Networks > Mobile networks > Network Mode > Select WCDMA only
You should see H+ speed in task bar
I am not sure if it would help, but some mobile carrier proxyed port 80 with something like Bluecoat, which would favour mobile browsing, and throffle desktop like traffic. They do this to prevent unauthorzed tethering, as some mobile carrier might charger extra for tethering.
Browsing with 7.7 might resemble desktop browsing. You may try change the agent in hope to trick the proxies. Many browsers like dolphin allow changing of agent.

Hi, why are you waiting for ICS, its been out a while now and its great....I would recommend doing the upgrade first then changing your agent to phone and not desktop as per the other members above. this makes sense and should work out for you and the connection issue.
Putting the phone into CDMA only can help but I have found that doing this will often help for a little while but often look over to find it has no network at all, then I need to go into settings and re-register on the network to get it back online as to speak.
The best thing ever for you is to flash the ICS from Samfirmware and then do a wipe after that, start from scratch and you should be fine.
I would also do the cheapest assesment first and get a friends SIM card and try that network or try another one from your own network provider and see if that helps.....
Last thing, my galaxy tab 7.7 would not download from the market (Play store) even though I could do anything else on the internet and found a fix for it on XDA (Kings of Android) which was to remove the proxy and port from the network settings APN and leave them blank, dont forget to save before you close or they dont save at all.
Try these, they should get you running

HoRNDIS: USB tethering driver for Mac OS X

Hi!
I spent the last week or so working on a project that I call HoRNDIS (pronounce: "horrendous") -- a Mac OS X driver that allows you to use your Android phone's native USB tethering mode.
It's a kernel extension, and requires NO software installed on your phone, and NO background apps on your Mac; if your phone supports RNDIS tethering, you're good to go! To make you salivate a little more, it looks like this when it's running:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
I've tested it on my machines, and a few of my friends have tested it on their machines, but it hasn't gotten *hugely* wide testing yet, which is why I'm still tagging it as a [BETA].
If you're interested, give it a shot... you can grab it from my web site, and if you're so inclined, get the source on GitHub, too.
Let me know if it works for you!
joshua
This is awesome!
This works great on my VZW GS3. Seems more stable than wi-fi tethering. Easy to set up. Been looking for something like this for a while.
Hey, this works great! I've tried hundreds of tips for my SGS and none worked until this one. Thank you very much.
I have one question, though. I'd like to tether my phone WIFI connection to my Mac (not only the 3G connection). Is it possible with this kernel extension? I tried but it didn't work with the Wifi, only with 3G.
I don't know if this is not possible at all, even on Windows, or anything else.

This works fantastic on a Nexus 4 on 4.2. Anywhere I can donate a few bucks for beer money?
Works great on a TMo SGS3. Thank you!
This is awesome!
Fantastic. Works great on my Samsung Galaxy SII HD LTE (E120S).
i'm going to try this!! you are the man!!! thanks!!
Confirmed Working
On Sammy Galaxy S2 Skyrocket on CM10 (stable & latest nightly) and OSX 10.7.5.
If it doesn't work at first. Make sure you reboot your Mac and then give it time to connect with your Android.
Thanks for this! I hate using bluetooth for anything and I have found that hotspot really makes this particular phone get really hot. Should help out with that since it is not transmitting via Wi-FI hotspot, saving my components within the phone!
Thanks!
Works flawlessly with the Nexus 4 on the Three network (DC-HSDPA+). Received 8Mb/s d/l vs 1.2 Mb/s up. Very happy.
Hm..
Ive got a Desire HD running a port of CM10
Macbook Pro with Lion (and i doubt this is causing problems, but i have a linux partition that i installed a tonne of wireless drivers on to get it to work XD )
Anyhow, when my phone is plugged in, nothing pops up in settings or anything, i installed the Rel1 package and installed it a second time as it wasn't working. It still isn't working though :L
Also, i have the interface, 'Android Phone' alongside bluetooth, wifi etc.. but it doesn't have a data transfer icon, but a telephone icon?
Do you think this is due to port (CM10), my OS X version, or somehow connected to Linux (im not really sure how it could be, but I'm just putting it as I did have to spend a long time setting up wireless on it, and may have somehow messed up something on mac)
Thanks for the words of encouragement, everyone! I'm glad to hear that this is useful to people.

Good to hear it works for you! I'm thinking that for this I'll take a similar policy to what I did in the days of the unrevoked project; if you found this software useful, you might want to consider donating to an organization that's been fighting for years to make it possible to do this kind of work: the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Can you try HoRNDIS-n1-test.pkg? I think that this is a similar issue to what I saw on a CM9 n1; that should fix things up for you. If that doesn't, can you file a bug in the issue tracker so I can help figure out what's going on here?
Thanks!
what is the advantage of this over PDANET?
Doesn't PDANET install actual software?
From running this, it is a kernel extension so it just works.... no need to really do any settings...
Mine just worked....
PDANET also costs doesn't it?

Additionally, it doesn't require an 'emulation' IP stack on the phone side, so performance and compatibility may end up slightly better.
anyone know of a free sms agent?
New version should support CyanogenMod phones better (if it wasn't detecting your phone, try again), and properly complain on 32-bit kernel systems; I think this is stable enough to no longer be [BETA] (Mods, feel free to remove the [BETA] from the subject). Thanks for all the kind words from everyone.

Picked up an ativ s. Love the os.

Coming from android and wp is a breath of fresh air.
I love how all apps use the same font and general style. Next up, a surface pro for work.

If you have had Lumia 925, you would have got many other benefits of Nokia exclusive apps.

you can dl most of the nokia apps including the nav app.
@glenroebuck: There are two ATIV S models; I'm guessing you got the SGH-T899M since it has LTE? If possible, please test a couple things for me:
1) Go to Settings -> About -> More Info, and list the OS, Radio, and Firmware version numbers.
2) Go to Settings -> Internet Sharing, and try to enable it (even if your plan doesn't support it, tell me what error message you get).
I'm trying to track down something that might be a problem with the phone or might be a problem with the OS or might just be a problem with my device, and there aren't many USA users of the SGH-T899M it seems.
os 8.0.10211.204
Firmware 2212.12.12.2
radio 2212.12.12.2
radio firmware 0.0.0.0
turned it on and it told me there is no cellular data connection to share right now.
Damn... that's the same error I get (even though it's blatantly false; I get that error even while I'm streaming music and downloading apps over said data connection).
Same version info too. They apparently have March and April 2013 updates, but those might only be for the other ATIV S model... I can't get them myself.

that is weird I only ever got it when you had me test it although today in my home city of clevlelad I got lte in some places but not near my home and it completly lost signal...like emergency calls only. I had to reboot to get it back. Did not have those issues in anaheim and Las Vegas both lte areas - but we are not official yet here in cle.
You're on T-Mobile, right? Set the APN to "fast.t-mobile.com" (no username or password) and it should work on both HSPA+ ("4G") and LTE (you'll briefly lose data when switching, but it comes back quickly; if that's too annoying then disable LTE). I think the APN info built into the phone for T-Mobile is wrong or possibly just outdated, which is why it doesn't switch to LTE gracefully and also why tethering doesn't work (tethering uses a different APN, "pcweb.tmobile.com", note the lack of a hyphen in this one).
People with the other model ATIV S have reported that after installing the April firmware update, they're able to install an app called "APN" that automatically configures their phone, including enabling tethering (although probably not LTE, which I believe is unavailable on that model). There is an app called "APNs" in the store for the T899M, but it doesn't have the auto-config option, nor the ability to set a tethering APN.

I used the apn app from samsung to configure fast.t-mobile.com when I was in vegas to get lte to work. It has been working ever since only yesterday was the first time i experienced no network after coming off LTE but again it is not official here in Cleveland so that might be the issue.
Other than that I love this phone. Since I have had a zune account for ever - if I shazam a song it lets me dl it directly from xbox store (zune account = xbox music acccount) Myappfree is a great way to get good apps for nothing. (they have a daily free app) and really any app I would use on android or iphone - there is the same or a similar app here. and the Ativ is such an pretty phone lol...people always ask me "is that the new s4?" then I explain it is a windows phone and they get a blank look

the gps one is called Here Drive Beta (that is the only one I use) it is a pretty nice gps as it lets you dl the whole us or just the states you want for use offline and give lane guidence and such.
For camera I like Blink or Photogram (not really nokia apps) You can get Here Maps too.
Does any one have problem when you shutdown device or restart that volume reset to 20/30 ?
I mean I have volume set to 30/30, and i noticed after reboot or power off that volume is 20/30 :S
