Hotspot? - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all, just picked up an S5. Also picked up an unlimited data plan. What do you all use for a wifi hotspot option on the S5? I am thinking about getting rid of my cable service provider and just using my phone for home service. I know there are 3rd party wifi hotspot apps, but are they really the way to go? Thanks!

If you are on the NI2 baseband, rooted and have safestrap installed you can use this without having to install xposed. It was a few pages back.

Yes im on Nl2, rooted and safestrap installed. Ill give it a shot, thanks!
Worked great! Even found out how to add hotspot to quick panel, appreciate it!

Mobile hotspots a no go.

I have been trying to get mobile hotspot to work on 1.83 to much disappointment. I have it rooted, I tried gladenabler, and I have even installed gingerblur as last rom it removed the verification altogether.
This time it is just not going away. I have also selected =false using root explorer for that one value that was listed in a previous post.
I am not on att I'm in another country with no tethering restrictions.
Any help would make me very grateful.
Thanks in advance.

Can't edit from my phone but in an update to what I wrote earlier. Editing the build.prop file actually worked but required a reboot.
In retrospect I should have thought of that but it wasn't listed in the op.
So, if you are also getting this problem
Follow the directions on this post

Then REBOOT AFTER.
Should be golden.

On your APN type just add tether after default. So your APN type looks like this APN type: default, tether
Mine works...I live in Malaysia

Wifi-Tether Android
Just use http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Once you rooted and enabled side-loading install Wifi-Tether android , that works for me
I actually have an employee plan so 40 for unlimited and tethering but if you add the apn u can also use barnicle wifi tether. U can't find it on the market (anymore/F-u too att) you'll have to Google but it is better than using my included option in network settings. I have also used the open one on code.Google.com and has been great. I love my atrix and webtop and lapdock but if I had a chance at getting it all on tmo or sprint, I'd jump ship. Making Google hide apps from it's own users? Wtf? If I were sprint I'd be praying att buys tmo because everyone would run to sprint. If I didn't have said plan, I'm not sure I could take the abuse they give their high paying customers.

I'm sorry, new to this, but what's wrong with using an app like 'barnacle wifi tether' to create a mobile hotspot?

You could also take the SIM out (or put the phone in airplane mode) and search via Wifi to find a tethering app on the market...

Sideload Barnacle or download PDANet
yea I use an unlocked AT&T atrix on Rogers and couldn't get the hot spot to work either. Just downloaded the android wifi tether from the market and it works fine. No need for the built in one.

The OS built-in HotSpot for free? Nope, not gonna happen until root and BootLoader unlock and we can flash a custom ROM.
However, there are a few programs that can do data sharing (tethering) without root, which do it in a method that it is not the same as the hotspot so it doesn't trigger the need to subscribe to the hotspot feature. I believe EasyTether has touted that, but it is for Wired/BlueTooth connections only, and not as a mobile WiFi hotspot.
All in all, if you want to use carrier provided features on a stock build, be prepared to pay for the privilege. Just be glad you are grandfathered into the unlimited plans.
EasyTether works great but you need the USB cable plugged into your PC and you need to install the EasyTether app on your PC also. Its $5 on Amazon App Store.

Anyway to get around T Mobile's tethering monitoring

I am running Juggernaut ROM and used it to tether quite heavily this past few days. I received a text message from T Mobile telling me to sign up for their tethering plan. I think they were monitoring the amount of data usage I was using and I exceeded some limit over a certain time frame. Is there anyway around this? Previously I only tethered for a few hours at most. Thanks.
No way around it

Google how to change the user agent on your internet browser. The T-mobile upsell page only shows up when it detects you're using a desktop browser via the user agent. Try tethering to a tablet or Google Chrome with the user agent set to Firefox and it works fine even after they send you the message saying your tethering is blocked.

They can prove it actually they can see the mac address of every device on their network and they know if a device using their network isn't a phone or isn't one of their phones

The quick workaround for the tether monitor upsell is to use a VPN... You can use a free service (I use VPN Reactor) or a paid service (such as StrongVPN).
To find and setup VPN Reactor, use HTTPS://www.google.com to perform a search... VPN Reactor is a secure (HTTPS) site and the upsell notice will not appear (which you might have noticed when checking any other secure site, such as GMail).
I hope this helps those looking for a solution to the tether upsell notice.
Idk if this is possible but using cm9 and aokp I have had no problems with tethering, and from what I have been reading perhaps aosp derivative roms don't have this issue?

No problems here using the native tethering app.......haven't had any messages or run ins with the upsell page. BTW I'm using FIREFOX on my laptop with some add-ons.
I opened titanium backup and froze "tethering manager" and now I can tether for free.

They still know you're doing it.
I got this same text message from TMobile, even though they recommended getting a tethering plan I didn't and they said I wouldn't be able to tether anymore.
To this day I'm still tethering, so I don't believe they can do anything to stop the tethering if you are on a custom ROM.

I dunno what they can do about it. Maybe charge you? Maybe shut down your data completely? Who knows
Wow I had just rooted my cousins phone and came across this issue as he got two text messages briefly after tethering.
download Logging Test App and the pro key off the market, gets rid of CIQ in juggs and not to mention makes the phone run like its ass is on fire... just be sure to run threw everything, and try not to brick yourself.... and if you don't backup and loose your os.. i just might die laughing
after running this i no longer got thoes nasty " we know your tethering " texts

No, you cant. Freezing that does not somehow hide your tethering data usage
BTW TMo will be stopping free tethering with ICS: http://support.t-mobile.com/thread/25504?start=0&tstart=0

yeah, you've got to get rid of tethering manager completely.... in other words find a rom that doesn't need it!
TMo can stop you from tethering if they want to, It's just a balance of the expected revenue gain and the likely backlash. If a nasty message accomplishes one without the other, it's a no brainer.
If you are rooted on a custom rom from the development section most likely you shouldn't receive any messages. That doesn't mean they aren't tracking your data. You will be throttled to 60kbs when you've reached the limit. For most people that's 2 or 5 gigs of data. There used to be a work around for the throttle but it's been patched.

T-Mobile Wi-Fi hotspot??

It was working but then the upsell page popped up. Any ideas on how to" fix" this I already tried changing the APN and downloaded the Wi-Fi for root users app it's a no go. Let's figure it out.

Why are you even using a wifi tethering application when 4.2 has tethering built-in to the OS? Settings > Wireless > Tethering and Portable Hotspot. Does the same thing and is more reliable in my experience.
The carriers usually block tethering by locking down the built-in functionality such that you only can use it if you pay a fee. That isn't the case for a phone with stock Android or a custom ROM. As for T-Mobile, you have 5 GB of 4G data and can use it however you please. I can confirm that tethering works fine with the $30 prepaid plan. Just did it a few minutes ago.
Someone mentioned that the stock tethering app won't work with his postpaid T-Mobile plan. Can anyone confirm this, and if so, isn't it just a matter of changing the APN settings?

I think the issue is what you're trying to do with the tethered device. My understanding is that they detect the User Agent string for the desktop versions of Internet Explorer and Chrome and redirect you to their upsell page. (Firefox appears not to trigger this process, I'm guessing because Android Firefox has a toggle that makes it indistinguishable from the desktop version, so they can't be sure you're actually tethering when they see the desktop Firefox User Agent string.) Other non-browser Internet access -- email client, SSH, etc. -- also appears not to be affected.
1 thing that's worked for tethering on my android devices is creating a NEW apn that looks like this:
Name: epc.tmobile.com
Apn: epc.tmobile.com
Let us know if this works. I get my N4 on Tuesday!

I didn't try those setting but I just used the built in Wi-Fi tether app, made up an ID name and password, and connected no problem. Tethering on this phone is FAST! Way better than on Sprint...so glad I left them lol.

yes. I would rather it be an app in the app drawer, but now it's in settings. I put a shortcut to it on my home screen with nova launcher.
This might be a stupid question, but I have unlimited data and does Verizon still charging extra for hotspot for us that have unlimited data?
You have to pay for the tethering service unless you have a hack, but I pay for the tethering service only because i dont want verzion to have an excuse to cut me off. Last month I used 122gigs.
