I have seen the reviews of the galaxy sii and sensation, i thought i would have a look at the galaxy?
Seems very nice but i was more interested in the camera features than anything.
The guy in the phone shop was game to help me compare the difference in image quality, so we took pictures of the same object at roughly same direction distance etc.
I was shocked!
The default software on both phones showed @ .2-.5mb file size difference, the galaxy image seemed like it had some filter on it to 'smooth' some of the noise, macro shots were lovely on the galaxy but bottom line was galaxy was only slightly better.
I use 360camera app and we tried that in comparison, and WOW! The image quality was far more superior on my DHD.
The couldnt believe it?
The video on the sii was far better full stop.
So i think i might hold out on the upgrade until autum until the new models apear?
As nice as both these phones looked i seriously dont see a big enough improvement to warrent me getting rid of my dhd?
Has any one else tried to physically compare?
In the same boat as you mate. Thought about getting a dual core but it just didn't seem worth it at this time.
Right now I'm going to stick with the Dhd which has held me in good stead and wait to see what comes out in the months to follow.
Basically Gingerbread isn't optimized for dual cores anyway. It's a bit like the situation we had with computers a few years ago where the 64 bit cpu had just come out but it had no value over 32 bit because there wasn't any 64 bit software.
So now I'm going to wait and see for phones to be released with ice cream sandwich, as it's slated to support dual cores.

Yeah, I'd agree very much. My friend has a Galaxy S2, I wanted to see how much of an improvement the camera was. I have a really messed up camera, due to dropping it on a sharp edge on the gym equipment in my room, the camera cover smashed and my autofocus doesn't work as well as it used to. Either ways, I decided to compare pictures, but with a tree, and from a little distance as it would be easy to see which camera captured more definition on some leaves. Ok, stock to stock, Galaxy S2 won hands down. Stock camera on the Desire HD produced an image with weird sharpness and a bloom effect of sorts, so the yellows were a little strong. The whole image as a whole seemed to have a dream effect applied (in comparison to the Galaxy S2's stock image).
Anyways I then decided to try Camera360 AND Vignette on my phone. WOW big difference! My image was around 9-10mb in file size, and was MUCH sharper. Not only sharper, but it caught the detail around the leaves and on the leaves. Scaling in 100% to the relative image size on my HD monitor, there was no real loss in quality, and details could easily be seen. Next, tried the Camera360 on his, wasn't much difference from the stock camera, even with settings to 100% JPEG quality. So i'd say, stock to stock, Galaxy S2 wins. Camera360 wise, Desire HD wins hands down, although not by a massive difference. Images were a little clearer. Now, when I tried out HD recording using stock to stock, 720p test of course, the Galaxy S2 owned the Desire HD D: But using lgCamera, and raising bitrate to 20mbps (The Desire HD actually recorded it in 26.5mbps) Desire HD was quite good, almost on par with the Galaxy S2. Galaxy S2 recorded in 12mbps, so double the bitrate on the Desire HD but less than double increase in quality (obviously). I changed encoding settings to h264 on Desire HD, file size was around 150mb a minute at 720p. Didn't have a chance to try out 1080p with lgCamera and high bitrate, although I think it'll have a high bitrate as standard. Stock 1080p on Galaxy S2 was visually STUNNING, to say the least very cool. Wish I could record in 1080p on the Desire HD I like to compare new things. So although the Galaxy S2 has a nicer screen, and dual core, it's not really that much faster in day to day apps (excluding games since I don't game on my phones much) and only other benefit is 1080p! I'd rather get a dedicated camera/camcorder for that then spend that much for that facility in a phone. So for me, I don't feel as though it's such a big upgrade. I'll wait to see what else comes out...bleh i'm poor atm anyways

If you are referring to 1080p recording its not possible due to the processor limitations. The only 1080p phones are dual cores.

nothing.. absolutely nothing . it is a way to trick customers
even a sony cyber shot 6mp camera which was available 2 years before .. click better picture then our 8mp camera..due to larger light sensor.
but yea you should remember its a phone .. not a camera.. you cannot have best of the two worlds.

The 4k camera of the Note 3 seems to be quite impressive. I'm actually thinking about buying the Sony RX100 II camera for travelling, but I'm unsure whether it is worth it. Since compact digital cameras don't support 4k yet I would just buy yesterday's technology.
What do you guys think, does it make sense to buy a compact digital camera at the moment despite of already owning a Note 3? Or is it better to wait for 4k digital cameras?

Depends on the price. The Note 3 camera is downright horrible in low-light, fluorescent light and with motion.
I'm a Canon-person (Technically I'm a DSLR user), so I can't say how good that Sony camera is. But the Note 3 camera is only good in bright sunlight, so it's probably a good idea to buy an additional camera anyway if you travel a lot.
As for 4K, that's only VIDEOS. You'd be hard pressed to find a digital compact camera these days with a resolution that low. For photographs, 4K is low: 3840 × 2160, 8.3MP. Anything above 8.3MP is a higher resolution than 4K, but only on STILL SHOTS.
I have both (as well as Canon dslrs) and the Sony blows away the GN3 for image quality.
I have both as well and the Sony RX100ii blows the Note 3 away especially in low lighting. I basically use to take spur of the moment pics. If at an event, party, or on a trip I would definitley use the RX100ii instead.

rx100ii is amazing, but it won't pair with the note 3, so it's slickest feature of using the phone as a remote viewfinder won't work

If I understood him right, he's talking about video recording. A FHD is only 2K (not quite but very close), the 4K video on Note 3 is double that and there's no compacts able to record 4K video as of yet. Excluding a GoPro Black edition (which is around $400 +/- now) that records 4K @ 15fps, 4K camcorders start from around couple of thousand $$$.
4K video is a new tech and not standardized yet, so hold your horses - the video industry may decide to go another way, like it happened in a battle between BD and HD-DVD. Besides there aren't many TVs yet supporting anything higher than a FHD plus they're expensive.
Wait for this tech to mature a bit and it will also get cheaper. In the main time the 4K video on Note 3 will do the job (stock on microSD cards!)
If OP's question was whether to get a compact for stills - they the answer is yes - no phone can compete with a good compact camera and RX100 II is more than a good compact.
I'm a Sony shooter but I don't own the RX100 MkII, I DO, however, have a Canon shooter friend that owns the RX100 (1st version) and he absolutely LOVES his RX100. If you want something pocket-able then, you will NOT regret the purchase... but if you don't mind something slightly bigger, I highly recommend the NEX-5T... it literally does better in high ISOs than a lot of DSLRs out there (and the amazing thing is, while it's pretty compact, it sports an APS-C sensor!!)
So I LOVE THIS PHONE, it has been everything I ever wanted in a phone except one key part; The low ligth performance.
I have taken a bunch of pics in darker settings (at work, in clubs, restaurants) and all my pics look blurry/oily (oil painting effect) and the only time I get sharp pics is on close up pics (really close up) with flash.
Is this the norm for this phone? Is samsung releasing an app update?
Do you guys have any apps that solve this issue and can you post them here/the setting you use with them. I have attached some pics below to show examples

For me it turned out the smart stabilization mode was the culprit, disabling it fixed it.

Yep and it only makes things more bright with no real advantage...it still looks blurred/oily and details are hard to make out; but hey I have a little bit more contrast/better colors
Updates wont' fix it - it's the hardware.
Take a look at the tiny little lens on the back of your Note 3. Then compare that with a point & shoot camera. Then realize N3's camera takes in a fraction of the light and has a miniscule sensor. Do you really expect similar performance?
You really need to play with settings, to squeeze maximum performance in low light and one setting for all won't work, but one thing is for sure, get as much light as possible from flash or elsewhere. If you ever watch pros making movies, half of their equipment is lights and light bouncing screens and they use them even in the daylight even with huge lenses costing thousands of dollars. I do agree Samsung could fine tune low light performance a little better, possibly having dedicated low light/night mode and explain "smart stabilization", which is not stabilization, but custom HDR, little better, but it's not that bad, considering small lens and sensor. I've seen that oil painting effect myself, but only in really low light where even DSLR would have hard time to cope.

what setting do you use in low light?
As I already said there is no one setting for all, but just to give an example, don't use smart stabilization for close distance , because then flash won't fire and here flash will give best results. On the other hand if you were shooting sunset, don't use flash because exposure will be too dark, unless you have people right in front as main subject etc. Smart stabilization won't work for moving objects, since it stocks multiple exposures on top of each other, but it may work pretty well for some static pictures. You could also try to manually set ISO and again it all depends, higher ISO will give you shorter exposure but much more noise, so for static picture you could try lower ISO and brace the phone against some hard surface to avoid shake, or even make a tripod. But nothing beats the light, so always try to position yourself with light behind you, so let's say inside the house have window behind you, not in front of you.

Googles own Nexus 5 needed a few updates from LG to fix it. LGs own G2.. the camera is smudgey and noisey and needs a firmware update.
The LTE version of the S4 (I9005) had shutter lag out of the box, leaving pictures burred and noisey, which was fixed.. eventually... in 4.3.

Stop letting Devs Q&A treat us like ****, return your phones, then send Samsung a Scanned copy of the refund reciept.. explaining it didnt work out of the box.. theyd soon kick their Q&A into gear.

I would but I don't know another phone that has a pen. THe pen alone has been the one saving grace for me. I'm a very disorganized guy, ESPECIALLY PAPER and being able to have all my notes in one place has been really convenient. But I don't know, I would like to find a way to get forums to get in contact with Sammy and get them to fix cameras.
BTW does anyone know if the note 2's camera is a better camera and if it would be worth it to return the Note 3 for a Note 2
WHat makes me angry is that most reviewers swear the Note 3 camera is godly. Well not at all in low light

Yes, It has an 8MP camera on it and its a brilliant camera, Its actually better than the S3, especially in low light. As an amateur photographer, I understand that 13MP dont mean squat.. 8MP cams are better.. less MPs for it to process.. I used to own a Note 2 and I loved it. The photos were truely amazing and Sammy have had a few years to iron out the bugs.. so it works beautifully and smooth.. nice fast shutter speeds with reasonable low light.. oh and the speaker on the back is fantastic and loud, with a rich sound from the wolfson DAC, plus the screen on the Note 2 isnt crappy Pentile either.
Its a great phone and you wont be dissapointed.

Yep I know, but reviewers all do that, its amazing what a new free phone will do to grease a reviewers wheels. I tend to watch independent YouTube reviewers, theres a few honest ones around if you look for them. There seems to be an obession that bigger is better, and in the terms of Camera MPx.. No its not.. trust me,. Look at the HTC One 4 Ultra Pixel.. Its fantastic, the Note 2 is a great phone and its cheap now. Go for it

So I suppose the question now is, is it worth going back to the Note 2 for despite the other advancements in hardware?
With Note 2, do the native updates give it some of the more useful features of the Note 3?

Now that I cant say, sorry. I know the Note 2 did get some added updates from the Note 3 OS, but due to the half-baked flaky bullsh*t OS that samsung, LG and other devs keep giving us "Out of the Box" with their bug ridden, faulty, un-tested devices from a lazy QA depatment over and over again.. I gave up on latest Android new release devices and went to Nokia WP8, but thats just me
And yet we keep buying these faulty release day Android devices.

How do you mean by wider camera view?, are you talking about how much of the picture you take is in a single frame? or do you mean aperture?
The note 2 has an f2.6 aperture lens where as the Note 3 has a wider f2.2 aperture lens, meaning on paper, the Note 3 should let in more light, however, due to the huge number of 13Milion pixels compared to the less crowded 8Million, the aperture size may not matter here.
Also the Note 2 and Note 3 both have a digital zoom, meaning it expands the actual pixels themselves, not the image like a better Optical zoom, but they both have O.I.S and both have panorama shot for expanded images.

You mean as in how much you see through the viewfinder on the screen.. I think the Note 2 is the wider view, but Im not sure someone else reading this may know though

AFAIK, the pen functionality in the Note 3 is better.
The camera on the note 2 sounds like a winner...
I guess you need to choose. Since it is only dark in so many situations, I would err on the better specs and forward thinking of the note 3 in terms of android trim, better specs, and future updates.
A $80 point and shoot will do even better than a note 2.

If you can get a wider picture from the Note 2. Note 3 seemed to have a narrow wide angle. (so lets say Note 2 was 16:9, Note 3 would be 16:11) thats what I mean. you can capture more area with the Note 2 camera

If the person who made that video, correctly focused the camera, the comparison would be a little bit more fair.
I can get video out of my HX9V ($350 Camera) that looks as good or better than that video.
The 5D has a vastly different lens than a cell phone, part of it, is the ability to focus to a certain depth, rather than having the entire shot in focus.
But yes, the OnePlus does take great video, but I hope people only take this as a comparison, and not base the "quality" off of it.
The 5D is still better as a camera and a video camera, no way around it.

Meh. It isn't a true comparison. The focal length of the Canon needs to be adjusted correctly for it to be a true comparison. The OnePlus One does have a decent shooter, but when actually used properly the Canon is light years better.

The Mark III only shoots videos at 1.920 x 1.080.
He recorded the footage with the OnePlus One in 4k.
It is obvious that 4k material looks sharper than Full-HD when cropped to 300%.
Simple as that.

Let me just first put it out there that I'm a loyal Sony guy. I've owned the Xperia TL, Xperia ZL, Xperia Z1 and now the Xperia Z3C.
With that said, I knew the Sony cameras took subpar pics, whether in full auto or manual mode, they just look bad. Add low light or indoor to the mix, and you've got what looks like a pic from a 2005 Nokia phone. Sorry, I know we all love our Xperias, but Sony should be ashamed of themselves for doing this, considering that they make awesome DSLRs and point and shoots.
So why am I being a rabble rouser all of a sudden? Well, I just got a Note 4 as my work phone and needless to say, I was blown away by the camera results. The differences are night and day between the two. Sadly, I'm supposed to be carrying my work phone just during work days, but I found myself leaving my Z3C at home and going out with the Note 4 this weekend, and you should see the pics I took.
I don't know if the lens is good but the software is bad on the Sony, but if there is any hope that Lollipop will make it better with RAW, I sure hope Sony takes advantage of it.
I agree. The camera of the Lumia 925 that I had, was much better than the camera's compact Z3.
To be honest, this camera does not please me one bit, outside the fact that it does not have optical image stabilizer.
Check the "post pictures that you have taken with your z3c" or something thread. Also, photos will naturally look better on amoled. Transfer your z3c pictures to Note 4 and then look at them again. Might seem better. I find both cameras great by the way

If you buy this phone for the camera, you're doing it from the wrong direction.
It'd be like buying this phone for the 'best speakers on the market', when HTC One's are those.
The Z3C phone is the best for compact and power; it's a pocket rocket and that's what it specializes at first and foremost, second being its water proof-dust proof without being some rugged phone.

If you're taking around a Note 4, then you're clearly weren't in for the Z3C's compact and pocket rocket in the first place, and you're now choosing the best camera in stead.
Please just tell me that you're comparing pictures on a PC.

You are comparing a quad HD display to a 720p. You're not comparing the camera performance. Just the display. I'd do the comparison again on a PC
I still don't understand what is wrong with Sony's compact camera ... my compact camera is taking great pictures :laugh:
No, I've been comparing the photos on my thunderbolt display, so no bias toward the Note 4's screen in any way.
And no, I'm not all sold on the Note 4, I still can't live without the compactness of my Z3C.
I will take identical photos from both phones today and post here.
Z3c camera doesn't suck, it's "just" above average.
The only other phone with superior camera that rivals Z3C's performance, size and specs is the iPhone 5s to be honest.
Samsung phones have the best cameras overall, but their devices aren't one-hand friendly.
If you want top notch pictures then you need to buy a decent camera.. For a mobile phone camera it does its job, I have no issues with it.

Try Lumia920. I still prefer it.
Compare any Nokia you want against an alpha 6000 (or any dslr or mirrorless camera).
Once you go big lenses and big sensors, you never go back.

Pretty much this.
I see nothing but good things about Samsung's phones, but when they get smaller and remove those physical buttons, I'll consider grabbing one... which may be never since it's their signature.

There is no universal recipe for taking good photos. All parameters are heavily dependant on the camera specs.
In my case, I'm taking usable photos even at ISO6400 and, with a size reduction afterwards, I can even go higher (12800).
The aperture is dependant on the lens you are using. A too large aperture will lead to blurry edges and soft images on cheap lenses. A too closed one will generate light fringing leading to artefacts. Then there is the focal length .... again, the lenses are behaving totally different.
It's all coming down to trial and error and understanding the limitations of your equipment.
And coming back on-topic, I would love to have full manual controls over the Z3C's camera (including long exposure and RAW data). That will allow for truly great photos with this tiny camera.
The most terrible thing I am concerned about is "soft skin" effect that seems to be always turned on.

I think, he thought you took the picture of the camera, with your Z3C. And so, was asking what settings you had on your phone to make the picture of the camera look so good compared to his.

Yeah. It's still not fixed in lollipop update.
I just don't understand why they don't fix this bug. It's a simple thing to fix i think, and because of that, front camera isn't useable at all!!

Actually I took that picture with the z3c just to show what I'm actually using to take photos . The phones camera was on auto but, the camera itself is only part of the picture. There is also framing and there is also light.
BTW, these are a bunch of samples captured today, on manual mode, with z3c running lollipop (for who is interested). In my opinion the quality of the camera is pretty low but still, usable in case of emergency.
