Why so worried about root on lilipop - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 General

Why is everyone so worried about root on lilipop as we havent gotten root on 4.4.4 yet lolipop looks terribe for one stay on kit kat and don't worry so much i dont see anything different in lilipop except astetic changes and new security

There is no android device yet(to my knowledge) that hasn't been rooted. I think they all will get rooted sooner or later. If there's no root it not android... My opinion

The VZW Moto X 2014 has no known root method for 4.4.4

you need to read the post by chainfire then

I am worried about root on both KK and Lollipop. I came from a Hero, Evo, Evo 3D, S3, M8 and now I want the N4. I have rooted and applied custom roms on all of the phones so far to help maximize the phone. I know the N4 is a beast of a phone and shouldn't need much to maximize, but I would still like to have at least root access for my apps and maybe safestrap for flashing custom roms.
My thoughts are now is whether or not to get the N6 or the N4. N6 will be fully customizable, but I believe the N4 will be the better phone even without a unlocked bootloader. Not having an removable battery or SD card slot is a possible no go for me seeing the Lollipop with eat more room into the internal storage.
I am going to my local VZW store today to check it out with the wife.

yeah I saw it, I can't justify that cash right now for a D-N4. I am upgrading on the Edge plan and VZW is footing $25 a month for my phone and I will be just paying $5 a month or a total of $120 in 24 months for the N4. I have a 10gb plan and that's why they are footing the $25 a month.

The phone is still fresh and the development foresight started vanishing after the announcement of the Nexus 6 and Droid Turbo. I bought one out of impulse and once I seen the XDA forum as a ghost town I returned it. Not getting sucked into another deadbeat investment.
Motorola encrypts their bootloaders though, but I don't think that means it can't be rooted.

It's been half a year, and it's looking as unlikely as ever that there will be a root for the Verizon Note 4.

I am not so sure. There are still plenty of Devs working it out. Even though nothing has been found yet, they have taken out alot of possibilities. Plus this morning saw a post that I believe was specific for the RE N4 and a possible way for r/w access on /system directory. Waiting to hear word whether it works or not, but if it does, that is all I need. Me personally, I do not care much for custom ROM's, just need control on the device and when it tells me I am not allowed, it irks me.

Well even if someone was making progress, I wouldn't expect to hear anything from them due to the bounty. It's a lot of money, and announcing it could give someone else an advantage - they could potentially search for forum posts or questions you may have asked to try and extrapolate your methods, look at your past techniques and area of expertise, or just plain try and hack you.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a *little*disappointed that we still don't have it, but Lollipop had been great so far (battery issues aside), so it isn't nearly as important to me as it once was. Since Lollipop now let's apps write to the external SD, the only things I really want are Titanium Backup and the ability to remove status bar icons (like that Verizon '4g LTE' icon that NEVER goes away, even with mobile data turn off...)

I see it everywhere. People buy expensive smart phones just to text, make phone calls, take pictures, use social media, play games and a little casual web browsing. Then they still have the stock launcher with all the same icons and widgets that the phone came with and they go into the app drawer to search for any app they want to use. They have no clue about customization, settings or the file system. I think they just want other people to see that they have the best stuff.

yea since its not one of the best phones out even without root..
regardless, root adds to the value to some but not everyone.. many have never rooted a device and us that do is a VERY small piece of the customer base like 1% or less small.

I wonder what percentage of users are crazy enough to pay full price for a developer edition phone just so we can hopefully get some cool new rom. Then we still have to wait for root to come to the retail phones before development can take off. Oh well, at least I'm not having the issues the OTA caused everyone.

Debating on Rooting the S4

Im a pure n00b. I'm About to buy my first droid phone. Im very knowledgeable about iphones and the jailbreak world but I'm not sure what would be the benefit of rooting a droid phone. I've heard the droid community is pretty wide open without rooting.
What would be some benefits of rooting a phone like the samsung galaxy s4? I did see that it will allow you to tweak bluetooth to connect a ps3 controller to it wirelessly for emulators but is it anything else that XDA could share to help push me in that direction? any cool features?
Thanks in advance.
I'd say the biggest benefit from rooting is getting rid of that crap that both Samsung and AT&T put on the S4
First thing, droid phones are from Motorola. Call all others android phones. It will save some unnecessary flaming.
Pretty much still running the stock rom on mine, but used root to flash a mod that allows free wifi tethering and hot spot, and an extended power menu.
Flashing roms is also a big reason most people root phones. You can pick and choose what you want(touchwiz roms or aosp) and find one you like.
I wouldnt want an android phone without rooting it.

I mainly rooted for faux's kernel which removed the launcher lag and the messaging lag that occurs sometimes. I also rooted to removed all the bloatware.
Biggest reasons to root, for me personally, are custom roms, custom kernels, debloating, backing up and restoring apps, theming, overclocking, and undervolting. These are just my reasons personally. There are literally hundreds of other things you can do as a root user that you couldnt do otherwise.
The worst case scenario of rooting being, if you really dont find the benefit for yourself personally, its pretty easy to revert back to stock unrooted. These samsung phones now are basically unbrickable and flashing is really easy, especially if youve went through jailbreaking an iphone... lol rooting a samsung device is way easier imo.

I root for the deep-level backup capabilities, custom kernels that improve speed and battery life, Pie Control (makes navigating & using a large phone much easier), custom ROMs, mods like Hot Spot and custom themes, and deeper level security apps (firewall, find your phone, etc).
Here are the main reasons while people usually root. In no particular order.
1. Ad blocking
2. Remove unwanted apps "bloatware"
3. Custom ROMs/ advanced custom theming
4. Custom kernels and features such as nandroid backups and under/over clocking etc.
5. Tethering/free hot spot
6. Aosp ROMs
Ultimately think of rooting as taking complete control of your device. You can do pretty much anything depending on your knowledge after you are rooted.

There is at least one downside to rooting. You can't take the updates w/o breaking root. I've not rooted my S4 yet, but am thinking about it. I always rooted my HTC phones and it would sometimes take several months for a developer to incorporate updates into a ROM. So that makes me a little gunshy with a new phone like this, as I assume there will be a few updates in the first few months. But it seems like the dev's are much more active and on top of it with the Samsung phones, so I'm tempted to go.
Main reasons I want to go are deep backup, ad blocking and being able to tweak my settings to make it so the home button does not wake up the phone. I know, the latter reason seems silly, but it's a big deal to me.
BTW, you do not need to root to be able to tether. Check out the PDANet+ app. That's what I'm using and it works great wired or via bluetooth.

You should be able to take otas if you have stock recovery and are just rooted, this is how it was on the S3 at least and I don't see why you can't. Also on the S3 we always got the leaks right before the otas came out so the ROMs would always have the newest builds out before the otas usually, depending on the developer, some didn't like using leaks. But Sextape would always have a leak right before the otas dropped and we had everything usually within a day or two up to a week. But the development there was amazing on the S3.

This is generally the case with OTA's, but every year it seems like rooting becomes more straight forwsrd, especially for Samsung. As for MDL it was a specific attribute added by Samsung to tighten up control on deeper root access that broke root, but it was hardly a locked bootloader or anything that severe. Re-rooting was as simple as loading a kernel and then Odining. At this point, most manufacturers are beginning to understand the benefits of the development community. Now if we can just get the carriers to "get it."

Once you root your phone and learn all the possibilities that come along with it, you won't go back haha It's a lot of fun after knowing your stuff. reading in this forum is probably one of, if not, the best thing/s you can do

Here it goes....

Sitting at Verizon, gonna return my turbo for a HTC One M8 simply because 1 week of having to view ads and not being able to run rooted programs is driving me ****ing nuts. Good luck guys, I can't justify the off contract price for a device that may never even see root. Sob....
Well..........
BYE
Interesting choice. I came from the M8 and can't believe you would prefer that phone myself but to each their own. Good luck man.
Why are people so damn impatient? The phone just came out. If you had a history with Motorola phones then you know they will end up being rooted. I always root my phones but can wait until a root comes out for it. Anyway have fun downgrading because of something so menial.

Best phone out there, I can't believe your impatience is getting you such a huge downgrade.
I have the m8 now and it's one of the biggest regrets I've ever made. The build is beautiful, but thats where it ends. Camera is terrible, battery life is terrible, performance has the typical htc 6 month frame and then you have to format and start fresh again. I'd def reconsider that choice, next week I'll be getting the turbo. My wife got hers about a week ago and I cannot say how jealous I am.

Wow really? I also have the M8 and I easily get a day on a full charge, its always siper smooth, even when I have power saver on. I use Bluetooth to stream all my music. I can agree with you on the camera being mediocre, but it has otherwise been one of the greatest phone experiences I've had yet.
I'll also just say there are too many people here expecting too much and cry when it isn't instantly given to them. Don't buy a phone expecting someone to root it. Accept it for what it is and remember root is a bonus.

I agree some people expect to much from a phone. There will always be a downside to each smart phone. I to was thinking about returning my Turbo and maybe get the z3 or Note 4. But I've always loved Motorola phones. Great build, voice, reception, battery. I've owned a note series before but I've always had problems with either the wifi or the GPS not locking on.
This is by far the best phone I've owned. Love it. I'm just glad I never returned it this past Friday.

To be fair , He's cheating a broken system where it should be illegal for a carrier to ask you to pay extra to unlock a function of the data you already pay for.
It will be illegal for them to charge for tether if the net neutrality push goes anywhere, or if the FCC can begin to classify this stuff under title 2.

Ya I know it sounds crazy, but I'm just not a fan. I've had htc devices that go back to the Titan, diamond, hero, evo, thunderbolt, rezound, etc,. This phone is the biggest let down and it may just be me on this, but man its just too finicky. It absolutely offers no protection as well.. if this thing touches water, your done. I think sense ui has major issues and starts to get corrupt after a period of time. I had this same issue with all of my htc devices. Go back to my Samsung nexus, g2 or even my note 3 and i've never experienced this.

There is no reason to believe that will happen again

Poll! Will VZW Note 4 Retail Ever See ROOT

So this is just a simple Poll Thread. Just wondering if we think the VZW Note 4 will ever see some kind of unlock!
Now a midst allot of the talk going around some say we may HAVE TO have an unlocked bootloader to even consider root.
So this Poll is going to be asking the following question? It is not more so about will we get Unlocked, or will we get root.
The question is:
Do you think we will see any type of unlocking/rooting method for the Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Retail?

Go ahead and put your vote in the top of the OP sir! Id like to see what everyone has to think about this topic!
Granted im very inclined to agree with you on your answer. I dont think its necessary. More or less a habit just to do it and were spoiled with the features! But yes some of the perks would definitely be nice!
I say no. I think every Samsung phone from here on out will be locked down tight on Att and Verizon. Sprint will have root and that will be the only route for rooting in the near future.
I HIGHLY disagree... this device will definitely see root. And although it performs great without it, things like write protection completely diminish the joy of having a capable device. We'll see root, maybe not an unlocked bootloader... but there's always safestrap....Samsung's devs are great, buy ours are better... hence the hiring of Steve.
For 1 just because it is hard to root makes it more tempting for someone to cracking the code and for 2 touchwiz sux it lags freezes and remove all that crap that Verizon and samsung put on our phones.
I mean... the Note 3 was the same.. it had a Root. I'm sure something will pop up
prob have root but no unlock bootloader
Looking back at old devices and seeing where we are now. I think the chances of obtaining a root exploit for this device are like 1 in a million. So I'm going with no on both. But that doesn't take away any value of the phone itself, its still the biggest beast around currently. Its also priced the most among online marketplaces next to the iPhone 6.
Highly unlikely. If it does, it will be some new universal root that happens to work on the Verizon version, but nothing Verizon specific.
Maybe if everyone keeps saying no, someone will look at this thread and be like, "can't? I can't? Lemme show these dudes why I am who I am." Lol
This is the only phone I have ever owned where my keeping it Is not based on root.
Of course I want root, and yes I believe it will happen eventually.
I really hope it will happen. I really have been grinding my teeth using the note 4 without root. I need my per app dpi settings, adaway, and more xposed modules. Honestly I would probably return it if I still could.

Hard to say, but I'm thinking no.
"No" right now and once L is released, helL no. Sorry, but that is what it seems to me.
Results as of right now
Well it seems like the dial is leaning more towards the side of most people thinking we will or most certainly get root.
vs.
Those who think more than likely not or most certainly not.
Ive got high hopes but like i stated im mighty happy with how the device is performing at this point in time. Of course the added benifit of removing junk would be great if anything that and xposed!
Im keeping my Root Alert set to high! LOL
Thanks for voting it up fellas! :good:
i say 100% on KK and on L 75%
i have read a thread just like this on soooo many devices since the OG Droid and the only thing that has been successful since has been locking the bootloader. N4 just needs the right people with it in their hands and that will eventually happen.
L has already gained root access without a modified kernel which you can read about here.
personally i am not moving from the N3 until there is root and at minimum SafeStrap working. i have most of the N4 software features mixed with some L and some S5 stuff with a great theme and some amazing Xposed apps on my N3 that i am not willing to give up. customization from theme to software tweaks is something i highly value.
No root mark my words
What about the KNOX flag? Does it not really matter? I pay 10$ a month for insurace so does the warranty matter that much?

XDA has become useless because without root.

Without root it beats the purpose of checking in every day. I used to check XDA multiple times a day. Now I check it every other day and there's always nothing interesting. If we had ROOT man it'll be different. Miss downloading flashing roms. Waiting for new updates with new features. I miss ROMS but without an unlocked bootloader this phone is F'ed. Locked down till lord knows when. Seriously thinking about buying another galaxy. I sold my note 4. Should of kept it lol
¡what a day, what a LOVELY DAY!!
I feel your frustration, but have to say one thing here. I've been using Android since the G1, I've rooted every device I've owned (too numerous to list) until now. The GS7E is really quite amazing, even without root. I had planned on leaving it stock as long as I could tolerate it anyways, so I was not entirely crushed to learn it was locked down so tightly. I mean, had root been a requirement for me, I'd have gone with a Nexus - where bootloader unlock is a right, not a gift.
I do miss proper hosts based ad blocking, but Samsung/Android Pay make up for the shortcomings of root-free ad blocking. The ability to change dpi without root (although it breaks Android Pay, but a quick reboot sets that right) and the AOSP like appearance of the Good lock screen helps me not miss Xposed. And the fact that things simply work, without the additional burden of wondering if it was something I flashed causing weirdness on my device, means I can spend more time playing with my phone... and less time backing up, flashing, restoring, adb'ing, fastbooting, installing/updating drivers, and debugging.
Would I have it the other way around? Certainly, but either way is a compromise, and there is no going back. So, perhaps it's good (for me) that we don't have root. Or, I might already be missing Samsung/Android Pay, and the stability of the stock rom.

That's cool bro, but like you I like the s7 edge. But being XDA I miss coming here to look for roms and being exited about getting an update. Yea I can customize it how I want it. Yes there no YouTube adds with RED. but being XDA that's just what I miss lol. Should probably just delete the app. Not like I'm going anywhere with this phone. Still believe rooting isn't a necessity with the galaxy s7 edge. I can't use Samsung pay so I could care less .

I would like root mainly for adaway. Other than that I don't need to do anything. I honestly don't have time for the flashing game anymore.

i want root for viper4android and changing mixerpaths file its just not loud or clear enough without those 2 things

I could not disagree more. Mods are even more important in device forums where there is no active development, as the entire device forum becomes a pissing contest where everyone who doesn't have anything to contribute just argue with each other - making it even harder to find what useful information there is.
I appreciate the work mods do here due to the fact that the mods here are volunteers who don't get paid (with anything but insults from people like you apparently).
So if you are mad at the mods for removing something you posted, perhaps you should read the forum rules to understand why your post was removed. That and take it to PM, instead of *crapping on all mods in a public post.
I upgraded to this from a note 3 and I'm devastated to learn the bootloader is locked. I'm tempted to return the device or sell it after its payed off. We should make a group that shows interest in not locking the bootloader of the Note 6 do when it's released at least there was a movement.

I think without root I have become a more productive person with life in general
I just want root so I can delete the unwanted apps and for cyanogen roms.

the reason we don't have root is simple... no one is working on it.
anyone capable of actually doing it has already been hired by the people who don't want you to do it
After using this device for a month or so I really don't care about root. Yes I would like adaway and Viper but all in all I would make the same choice all over again.

Screen is too small and the quality is garbage compared to OLED, otherwise I'd agree.
Edited
Is there anyone actively working on root that I can get with? I haven't been in the dev game for a long time, but browsing the web without adaway is getting ridiculous

It is not that small bigger than the s7 that I had. The oled and amoled is great but it feels more fluid on the HTC with this LCD. Rooted and custom ROM, that beats the s7 and edge any day of the week. Battery is going great now. I am at 51 percent with 3 hours sot unplugged since 8 this morning and now it is almost 8.

Will Sprint LGG6 Ever Obtain Root or Unlocked Bootloader?

Will Sprint LGG6 Ever Obtain Root or Unlocked Bootloader?
Magic 8-ball says: Ask again later...
I hate these questions. They make me feel more doubtful, lol. Heck, if we knew that everybody would be buying one and waiting in anticipation.

The million dollar question. I hope it happens but this is the first phone stock I've had that doesn't annoy me. I actually barely notice at all but I love to flash so maybe one day
My phone runs great no issues so it's not a big thing to have it rooted in that aspect, however. I like to keep NANDROID backups in case something happens, and the ability to backup applications the way I want is very important to me. Just using apps to backup everything is one thing, but if something occurs on a system level, you are generally screwed unless you have ROOT to be able to tinker and fix it yourself. I was able to fix countless phones on my own when the stores would want to wipe to factory reset or give me a refurbished. Screw that mess, give me freedom. Besides, it's illegal for them to deny you insurance claims based on ROOT. They legally have to prove that you damaged the phone by modifying the software. Battled and won twice after threats of a lawsuit. I have that part of the consumer rights saved in multiple places, just need to remember where so I can post it.
It all depends on whether or not the bootloader is locked, dm-verity, restrictions, etc. I hope it's not something like the Galaxy S7 with its Qualcomm Secure Boot.
The bootloader isn't even accessible from any user accessable means from what I've encountered, I can't seem to get in, I have "Enable OEM unlock" in settings, but it just seems that fastboot has been entirely stripped from this device... Very weird.

I'm guessing no one is even working on root or bootloader unlock. Seriously, disappointing. I just want bloat gone.

Why dont you look for a bootloader exploit or donate your phone to someone who can do it?

Because I like to go outside every now and then and I need a working phone. Don't care to go back to old Nexus.

You can still anti bloat through android.. by disabling apps manually. But yeah I feel your pain.. I hate ads, I miss Xposed, I miss TWRP.. My note 5 i still keep around for that reason...
Truth is the LG G6 is a spectacular phone.. But the rooting community is getting smaller and smaller as android allows you to be more customizable and the average device life for people has gone from 2-3 years.. to every year now with leases and trade ins at carriers, and flagship phones coming out every 8-14 months.
WIth the G4 randomly dying, and the G5 having battery issues.. It took LG a while to get it right, and I love this phone more than the s8 and s8+ but LG jumped on the "apple/samsung" bandwagon by locking bootloaders... There are alot more people with Samsungs than LGs right now.. The reason behind all the companies going this route is because of Android Pay and proprietary security by phone manufacturers to push more sales through corporate and enterprise security..
At least LG is over time unlocking some variants ( albeit international) of the G6 its hopeful...
We used to have this luxury with HTC but they are still trying to stay afloat.
Those are just my observations... from working for an indirect dealer and rooting tons of phones for 9+ Years.
We just have to pray for an exploit- somewhere.. someone out there has turned it into an obsession... Lets just hope they emerge ....

Ditto on all that. For ads, I've used the all in one opt out which has eliminated lots of ads. Bloat is irritating, having to reset Google Voice after every update. Xposed was awesome. And I want all the Sprint badging and boot animation gone. Even temp root would make me happy.
Just everybody remember. Do not update. Usually root is achieved on lowest firmwares only in the last few history of lg series
Someone just messaged me this: Maybe some jtag process could work, or test point at qcom mode, dumping boot.img and rooting with magisk
