Ever since my Samsung Rugby Smart... broke (don't ask how)... I have been on the hunt for a different rugged Android that comes with a relatively low price tag that supports T-Mobile either natively or through carrier unlocking. Recently the Kyocera Torque caught my eye at a Sprint store. The specifications of the phone were pleasing to me, and I saw listed on sites like eBay that a used condition Torque would be going for around 70-80 bucks. While talking to a Spint representative, pretending I was actually going to buy the phone and/or a Sprint plan, I asked him if the Torque had a SIM card slot and if it was compatible with GSM networks, such as T-Mobile (my actual carrier). He confidently gave a YES to both of my questions (he also said that in order for the phone to become unlocked, I'd need to use Sprint for 2 years and then cancel the plan and request phone unlock-age through them. No way I am getting Sprint for 2 years just for a Torque to be unlocked. Besides, there are unlocking websites which claim they will unlock this phone. Also, he probably assumed I was going to buy the phone from Sprint themselves. No way I'd ever do that! XD )
Here's where the confusion comes in. When I look online at phone specification websites like GSMArena, it states that the phone is NOT COMPATIBLE with GSM networks, and has a NON-REMOVABLE SIM card.
I am getting two different answers and I don't know which one to believe. If anyone knows the TRUE answer to this SIM card slot and GSM network compatibility conundrum, I would appreciate that they share the answer. I am excited about this phone, and if it really does support USA domestic GSM networks and all that, then I'd be buying this phone very soon.
Oh, and one more thing. Besides compatibility with GSM Networks, if this phone does support GSM, I'd also like to know if it supports high-speed data such as GPRS, HSPA, or anything like that. I have an HTC Rezound right now, and while it does support GSM Networks, it only gets 2G (EDGE) through T-Mobile. So support of 3G, and possibly beyond that, is another main factor that I would like to know about the Kyocera Torque, as it is actually one of the main reasons why I'm looking for an upgrade.

I talked to the Sprint guy again, and he took the phone apart and showed me the SIM slot. It was a Micro SIM I believe (the size right below Mini). The guy said it would work on international GSM networks, but if it was fitted with a SIM card for a United States GSM network, it would just say the phone is network-locked.
I guess the question is now this: is there a hack to "allow" or "force" the Torque to work with US GSM networks, similar to the hack for the Motorola Photon 4G (another phone I am looking into buying) that allows it to do just that?

nope. and best to just avoid kyocera phones completely. kyocera is a turd of a company. they lock down the bootloader and never issue major updates. for example, the torque won't ever see kitkat. and since they lock the bootloader, you can't install a custom recovery, or a 3rd party rom.

Thanks for the heads up about Kyocera being a locked bootloader turd of a company XD. Now I'll be sure to avoid them in the future. No longer interested in the Hydro Life anyway, got an LG L90 for $48 and have CM11 on it already

Interesting thing about the torque, it is one of sprints few water resistant phones, and also has the loudest speaker phone they make in my opinion. I just bought one as a spare phone for $50. Great to keep by the pool.

yeah, it is a nice phone... except for their stubbornness about completely locking the device down. if they would actually make an effort to keep their phones updated i would not complain about it too much. but the fact that they lock it down AND never keep the phone updated beyond minor things is inexcusable.
UPDATE - I was able to track down the following link for the modem that is supposed to be used in the LTE version. This would give credit to the information that tech support gave me. If this is correct, the modem is completely accessible at the software level. HELL YEAH! Now here is the link.

I originally called Nvidia tech support back on July 17th, 2014 to see if the LTE version would support GSM voice calling seeing as how it is factory unlocked and compatible with both AT&T and T-Mobile. They would not tell me if the phone restriction in the US was locked down by hardware or software at that time and that I would have to call back once the tablet officially hit the market.
I called today and was AMAZED when the tech told me very honestly that the restriction was at the software level. I then asked, if I were to root the device without unlocking the bootloader, and then use a different framework to expose the dialer and phone settings, would I be able to achieve making phone calls over a GSM connection....................... HE SAID YES!!!!!!
Again, being very forthcoming and stating exactly what I wanted to do, he assured me that this can be done by altering JUST the software, it is not locked down at a hardware level like the uh...cough, cough... Nexus 7 LTE. As usual, rooting MAY void the warranty....BUT he said that doing something like this would be looked at on a case by case basis for determining if these actions would indeed void the warranty. Encouraging, as he did not flat out say, if you mess something up...enjoy your new paperweight!
Praise the lord... I know not everyone needs or wants a tablet that can make calls, but if I can kill 2 birds with 1 stone, and have a way to make the 30 minutes of calls that I do per month through BLUETOOTH (don't start the whole holding a tablet to your head is stupid argument) while only carrying an awesome performing tablet, than that is fine for me.
Now to just wait for the LTE model to arrive to market and then see if any BADASS DEVELOPER can share with me how to modify the framework to expose that dialer!

That is very good news. I really like this tablet, but I will upgrade for the larger storage size and the ability to make a few changes and be able to use it as a phone when needed as well.
Speaking of the lte version, does anyone have confirmation its is T-Mobile and attack ONLY as I was looking at the listed cell bands and it does list the bands that others carriers use as being compatible though I saw no mention of what the actual radio chip set is (so its feasible that it isn't gsm only hardware wise)

According to the Nvidia Shield Tablet FAQ, there are 3 versions of the LTE tablet, only one of which supports voice. Unfortunately, the LTE bands that model supports do not appear to be the ones T-Mobile or AT&T use in the U.S.A.
Hopefully the lack of voice support on the other models will be a software restriction that can be fixed by the developer community here.

i want to upgrade my phone and i intend to do exactly as you did .but i'd like to know does the shield tablet have an inner top speaker ? meaning if i want to put it on my ear directly to make a phone call . wouldn't everyone surrounding me hear what the other party on the end of the line is saying to me ?

Thanks for the great news and just what I had been waiting to have clarified. Presently I am using the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 P6800 which has phone capabilities.
My telephone use is very light, texting gets more usage, and I have no interest in carrying two devices. Generally I make phone calls using the speakerphone but if I ever have to take a call in a public place then I hold the tablet to my ear. Just for the record and for those who are paranoid self obsessed, nobody ever notices that my phone is 7.7", let alone point fingers at me
My brother is a heavy mobile phone user and he has a Tab 7.7" also and he will never revert to a small screen phone either.
The UK release date for the LTE version is 2nd September which is close to my birthday so I wonder what Santa will bring
This is an excellent move by Nvidia, they deserve to have outstanding success with the Shield Tablet.
In the meantime I am watching the WiFi and cracked casing threads to see how Nvidia are responding, I wouldn't be surprised if the release date is delayed while those issues are addressed.
Same situation as rebski/ I got a tab 7.7 too...
But unfortunately the shield tablet looks quite heavy, 390 grams with 8"... And doesn't have a notification led/ or an amoled screen ( on my tab 7.7, I use NoLed)
But all the ports are very useful.... Quite a dilemma with the tab Style 8.4 (290 grams)
Pre-order or wait?
So I'm looking to replace my nexus 5 with an nvidia shield... This will be my first time using a tablet as a phone. I'm rather nervous about dropping the extra hundo (100$) on a tablet when there is a chance that I wouldn't be able to use it as a replacement for my phone, sure its the best looking tablet on the US market right now and lets be honest, i'd happily drop 300$ on the none LTE version but I don't want to drop the extra money if this wont work. What do you guys think are the probability of being able to use this as a phone replacement and even if it is not capable of LTE voice in the US market is there a reasonable workaround the can be done to be able to use the tablet as a phone?

It seems like it should be possible but much may depend on location and carrier technology. But I supect that we may have to expend some cash and time in order to get it to work even in those areas where the capability seems certain. In short it probably won't make calls straight out of the box but we shall know more once the LTE models are shipped.

I got mine LTE the other day and the msg that pops up is "Calls are not supported" when using a dialer.

Congratulations on getting the device. That is disappointing not to have voice calls straightaway. I have been looking closely at the photos on some recent LTE reviews and they don't have the phone icon. So what is this SKU that is supposed to be available for purchase I wonder? No doubt we will find out shortly. In the meantime enjoy your tablet.

Got this reply from Support today.
Thank you for the update.
I checked this case further & the current Shield tablet you have purchased with the P/N 940-81761-2505-200 is for “SHIELD tablet LTE Europe (EU / UK Adaptor)” which is data only and no Voice feature supported.
For voice you would need to go for SHIELD tablet Voice (E.U. Adaptor) - which is not yet released. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the information. Nvidia is making this harder that it seemingly need be. They should have clarified this from the outset . I think that the sum total of the issues with this device means that I shall look to the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact Tablet as my likely next device.

I bought the Wifi version and had to return it due to the Wifi issue. It's widely known and posted in Geo Force forum (NVidia own forum site) and no response from NVidia.
As much as I like the Shield Tablet, if NVidia won't fix it, I won't buy it.
I completely share your views. When this device was first announced I couldn't wait to buy one, so it is despondent to watch the enthusiasm evaporate. Also disappointing as I had expected much more from Nvidia. Isn't there a 64 bit version on the drawing board? Perhaps with the Shield Mark II they will get it right.

The idea was to replace my phone so yeah i was, started the process to return the device until i can grab one knowing i can make phone calls.
Other than this i havnt had any issues with either battery, wifi or cracked edges even the buttons feels different compared to 16gb version.
I simply love the tablet but doesnt help if i can only text people lol
Ill stick to my old broken phone until they get this sorted and get a new tablet then

Because carriers here typically have very cheap offers for unlimited calling and texting to subscribers of the same network while its relatively more expensive to make calls (and text to some extent though this isnt the case so much anymore with texting) to subscribers outside the network. (and there are basically two carriers only competing)

I noticed that Smart sells an S6 duos in which both SIM slots are locked to Smart. seems odd for anyone to have two SIMs from the same network carrier.
by the way, if you've experienced using the S6/edge, then the N5 (and possibly S6e+) will virtually feel the same in processing. but if you're doing some more heavy multitasking, then you may feel the difference the extra 1GB RAM of the N5 offers. the screen real estate is always appreciated, but handling of the overall phone might be a thing people actually consider more and so they may go for the physically smaller handset. I mean, there are actual iPhoners who think the iPhone 6 screen is too big, and miss the smaller screens.

for Calls, there's the option to select either SIM or both. but I don't seem to be able to dedicate any one SIM - they both just work anyway (as long as I have service).
for SMS & MMS you only have the option to select either/or.
for Data, one SIM is dedicated to 4G/3G/2G while the other SIM is limited to 2G. or you can just turn data for both SIMs off while talk and sms & mms are still in service.
when you're making a call, you have two call buttons - one for either SIM.

Just learned that no 64GB available here and 32GB without SD Card for expansion is a serious drawback.
I can live with no IR and no removable battery but lack of SD Card, with all that 4K video recording and all, is really a tough pill to swallow.

Anyone tried rooting the N9208? There's a chinese site that has instructions of rooting it. Are there differences between the OS of TW and PH N9208? I'm afraid that if I followed the chinese instructions, I'd end up with a TW language device.

Hi i just had my note 5 for about a week or so... its the dual version issued by globe philippines... i didnt notice anything wrong with the phone until i tried making calls. 1 out 10 tries pushed through.... so my first thought was to reboot my phone to fix it unfortunately it didnt. Then a text came through feom my friends tling me that they have been trying to call me and all they get is that im out of coverage when I'm just at home. By the way im connected to Lte when this happebed. So I tried to look for another way thought of changing the mobile network to 3g/2g. Calls started pouring in and out. It was fixed. But when I switch it again to LTE same thing happens all over again. Has anyone have the same problem?
Globe LTE doesn't support voice with data unlike with other carriers outside our country with VoLTE

I heard comments that Cricket somehow screwed up some core functionality on this phone, like the any orientation call thing. Is there a way to get this onto whatever the stock Alcatel firmware is, and not the Cricket version? I've seen mentions of rooting and unlocking the bootloader for TWRP, so I'm thinking there is a way to just get as close to stock as you can on this, but it being Cricket after all, and some poor experience with the Moto G on Cricket, I'm expecting they somehow locked down all versions.

I'm on stock the way if came from cricket. I'm happy with it for the most part. It does have a notification widget and setting for the reverse phone thing, but I've ever turned it on as I deem it useless to me. I want to be holding the phone in the correct orientation. The phone does have an issue where the screen is way over sensitive and thinks you want a "tap" when you really want to "slide", but I don't think that is crickets fault. I don't know that the phone is worth $130. The only thing it has over my LG G Stylo (on Boost Mobile) is 2GB RAM/16GB ROM vs. 1GB RAM/8 GB ROM (and higher MP camera on idol 3, but had Marshmallow on Stylo). I expected better response with the 2GB RAM over the 1GB, but there is lag and stutters on this phone and I can't figure out why that would be. You'd think 2GB RAM would be plenty for any phone. However, for $80, it is definitely worth it! I just wish I could have got mine for that much. Don't know if I'd buy another Alcatel phone. I never heard of that brand until I got this one. I always had good luck with the mid-range priced LG phones.

I had the cricket version for about 4 months before it was stolen. Just replaced it with the 6045I global unlocked from Amazon for $199.00, and I must say that having both, and having paid $109.99 for the cricket version, you get what you pay for most definitely applies here. The only similarly between the two is the poor RAM management, which Marshmallow should hopefully fix. Cricket rep said that the hardware, firmware, and software were cricket specific, hence the low price and missing features. The global unlocked version came with the pre-marshmallow firmware, and latest security update out of the box. 2 very different phones. The tap to sleep and wake works flawlessly, among many other things. Just waiting for the ota marshmallow before I unlock and root the new one. Was running slim on the cricket with pretty good results, but I don't think that you can make the cricket version totally like the international. Good luck!

Yes they did the revisable calling doesn't work but when rooted and install the original Idol software it works fine.

Well you certainly can disagree, but firmware will enable or disable hardware..... And I had the cricket version and now the international, and upside down calling is disabled on cricket, among other things.

I don't much care about the reverse call thing. I would have it turned off if it did work. Useless for me as I want to be holding the phone in correct orientation - just my thing.
Do the Cricket issues go away if you unlock the phone?
I'm new to GSM - Can I take my Cricket SIM card and put it into any non-cricket GSM phone that Cricket supports and it will work?
I'd like to know the other things that don't work that the blame is attributed strictly to Cricket. (Maybe a year from now if I go to buy another phone I will better know what to look for - maybe buy an unlocked phone if it is not too much $ more. Probably not an Alcatel brand though.)

I've only had the unlocked international for 5 days, and I'm typing this from a hospital bed.... Just had surgery this morning. I will try to recall the differences : tap to wake and sleep works perfectly, it flies through boot(relatively speaking), the cricket version I would have to put in the freezer if I cleared caches and rebooted, it would get too hot to touch, random reboots even before rooting and on stock rooted, incompatible with apps and ROMS, and other stuff that I am probably forgetting. Unfortunately, cricket is cricket.... Unless you have an unlocked GSM device. My 6045I is using a cricket sim, and an AT&T apn. My speeds are not capped, and my data barely has moved. The international unlocked is $199 on amazon. Unlocking the cricket version to my knowledge will not change the basics of the firmware, but may allow you to flash different ROMS with different firmware if you use a different GSM sim. If the music isn't that important to you, the LG Stylo is a more solid device that has removable battery, better camera and screen, AND WAY better memory management. Just not cricket version. I have the T-Mobile version, and around here, neither they or Metro can keep them in Stock. Updated to Marshmallow immediately after powering on the first time. Good luck!
Is battery capacity only 2000 mAH ?
I bought this phone 2 days back fro Cricket.
I checked phones configuration everywhere and battery capacity on paper is shown to 2910 mAH. But when I used an app GO Battery Saver it shows real battery size is 2000 mAH. Can you guys check battery capacity for your phones. Is it 2910 or 2000 ??
Also double tap works for Cricket version too.

Can you check battery capacity for you phone using GO battery saver app or some app which can check battery capacity in mAH. I bought from cricket and this app shows capacity to be 2000 mAH opposed to 2910 mAH as advertised.

According to app AIDA64, report from android is 2000, and capacity from database is 2910 (!?!) on 6045I. My Cricket was stolen, but next time I am around a store, I will try to check out and post, if no one else has.I still get to bedtime with 4 hours plus SOT, AND 15-20 % battery, which is much better than Cricket. And that's pure stock. Not going to root or mod until after Marshmallow update.
Same result for cricket device.

The double-tap on my cricket works too. However, after I reboot the phone, the double-tap no longer works - even though it is still turned on in settings. So I have to turn it off/on to get it to start working again. I think I have read somewhere else that this is a common issue.

One of the features that make this phone nice is it has microphones and speakers on EACH end which means having it "upside down" works the same as "normal" orientation. This becomes especially important in the car where you can drop the phone into a cup holder upside down and have the power cable connected at the "top" without having to worry about your plug getting mangled if it was sitting in normal fashion.

I've read a bunch of conflicting threads and info lately but nothing concise in regards to what I'm trying to do and need some help.
This is my first ever android phone. I'm coming from an iPhone 6 as a heavy business user. WiFi Calling is extremely important because my house has terrible cell reception. I recently purchased an SM-G935FD (duos phone) and I'm a USA AT&T customer. I rooted the phone day one but had not yet swapped the SIM card. I chose the DUOs because I do quite a bit of international travel and I liked the hardware of the XYNOS platform better than snapdragon. Unfortunately I didn't realize or suspect that WiFI calling would potentially become a problem. I could care less about Samsung or Apple Pay for that matter, nor do I really care about Voltos. But wifi calling is a deal breaker.
I rooted the phone, and I put flash fire on there but really don't know how to use it. I found some people saying that my phone can accept both the SM-G935F firmwares and FD firmwares, but others who were skeptical. And people saying that there were firmwares that did have wifi calling enabled and others who said no.
At the moment I am back on the iPhone 6 because the Samsung is useless to me until I figure out how to get wifi calling enabled on there.
So... I'm confused. IS there a firmware I can flash my rooted unlocked S7 that will enable this? How exactly do I go about doing that with either flash fire or smart switch? I looked, but I am having difficulty finding a guide on doing this. The phone is already a paperweight, but I don't want to brick it as well lol.

Actually I think I got it figured out. I changed the CSC using TWRC over to an att USA CSC and that seems to have at least enabled the menus for this functionality. I haven't moved the SIM back over there to test it though.

I would move this thread to the AT&T specific section. My understanding is that specific drivers are needed to do WiFi calling on AT&T and it's not baked in and the model you bought is not sold in the states whether it's sim unlocked or not. Also, why would you root/jailbreak a phone running an OS that you have no real experience with? If you can't get it to work then I'd return it and either buy the AT&T version outright an have them unlock it for you or go to Best Buy, Amazon or Samsung themselves and buy the single sim unlocked version. You may still have issues with that unlocked version if AT&T's Wifi calling is as locked up as I remember. T-Mobiles wifi calling works with your handset but it also has oddities such as the TMO sim must be in sim slot 1 to work. Because that model is not normally used with U.S. carriers .. they kinda don't give a crap about it so the work is on you.
Since this is your first Android phone .. I don't want you to think this is a problem with the OS or even with Samsung. It's just how things work. Apple allows carrier specific network files to be pushed to iOS where that's not the case with Android. I think maybe backup and stop hacking on things would be a good piece of advice. Take it for what it is. I just would like to prevent another iOS switcher from running around saying Android suck because things didn't go the way they thought would.

I'm a LONG time older comp sci major who works for a software company and has been doing consulting for a number of years. All day every day I deal with every software imaginable. It just HAPPENS that this is my first android phone, and Therefore is not that familiar to me yet. The only reason I had an iPhone and idevices (all jailbroken) in the first place was because at the time, my company was locked to Apple mobile devices. I'm actually simultaneously working with piemessage to try and get a VM up and running to allow me to use iMessage on Android
Also I understand their may be some nuisances of screwing with other packages and drivers. I did do the CSC update and that "enabled" at least the menus and the ability to turn the features On. Whether or not it's working, I have no idea. Without a SIN card inserted however, I was able to place a cal using google hangouts dialer without any issue whatsoever, but as that is a different app then the actual phone dialer... I'm not sure if that proves anything. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but making a wifi cal through Hangouts Dialer connected to my google voice number without a SIM card inserted is different than dialing a number using the phone app.
Unfortunately, the only real way for me to test it, is to take the SIM back out of my iPhone, call att again and have them switch the IMEI again. At least google voice wouldn't configure properly until I did that and it took forever to get the call forwarding reset. And my problem is I'm going on a business trip tomorrow and don't have the time to be swapping SIM cards back and forth.
Maybe I'll just put it in letter without calling AT&T and see if it works anyways. Are there any prevalent icons up at the top to indicate it's a wifi call being made vs a cell call?

I've just encountered a lot of folks who are smart techies who have used iPhones for a long time and Android frustrates them and then they freak out. My bad. I apologize.
I still think you need to check the AT&T specific section. I've read that the proper support for AT&T's wifi calling isn't baked into AOSP like T-Mobile has theirs baked in. This could have changed but I don't think so. The other calls ie. Hangouts, Google Voice and Skype aren't controlled by AT&T so I would assume they'd work regardless. The wifi calling registers with AT&T's servers/routers ... what they require for this handshake I'm not entirely sure. I know that when I tried it out using my Nexus 6P it didn't work out of the box but I didn't spend a lot of time on it either.
Ah. I get you about the business trip thing. It's why I bought the unlocked S7E .. I have to swap to often when traveling. I did this after I bought the version you have. I found that 1 sim slot would do LTE/3G/2G and the other was stuck on 2G only and that it would random switch from sim 1 to sim 2 when I was in the States with my personal TMO sim and my work AT&T simcard. It was too irritating so now I just expense the TMO account and gave back the AT&T sim. Not an option for everyone .. I get that.
Also, I did read that AT&T likes to jack folks around on speed when it's not one of their phones and there is a fix involving the EMEI number being changed in your account .. I can't remember where on XDA I found that trick but I'm sure a search will find it for you.
