Is it possible to encrypt the device and still use the finger print sensor?

I would love to know this as well. I know the S5 did not work that way. I hope this does as I work in a HIPAA complaint business that has to have the phone encrypted. Thats the one thing I do like about the iphone is it comes encrypted therefor the fingerprint reader works with encryption.

I have heard that in Android 5.0 they are going to have encryption on by default.

I have read the same thing. Here is a brief article on it. Well I guess I cannot post links but I am sure a simple Google search will show you the same thing lol. Hope Samsung gets the update to the Note 4 pretty quickly.

From what I saw Samsung wants to get Lolipop out by the end of the year.

Though, encryption will only be on by default on new devices. Hopefully the change in Android 5 will still mean that encryption will be possible with fingerprint security only.

Wow......thanks man. Funny thing I was just talking to someone about this.

Does settings from video still work? I could manage to encrypt with fingerprint enabled. Could you please post some tutorial? Or is it just because I have Snapdragon? Thanks

Very cool! More NFC functionality is awesome, IMO! Thanks for posting man!
Now where's the manual download link
Too bad it doesn't include the Random Reboot fix, as that (IMO) is a much more needed update. *smh*
http://androidandme.com/2011/02/pho...s-new-nfc-features-random-reboot-bug-remains/
how come i didnt get the update???
Same as before; roll-out is staggered so not everyone will auto-download it on day-1. Could try calling *#*#checkin#*#* & see if that kicks it in... didn't for me though. Hence the hope someone posts the file so it can be manually installed
Noone has it yet, be patient

this update doesn't really give any benefit to the users right?
looking forward to the OTA update
Excited about NFC, but far more disappointed by lack of major bug fixes.
More locales inside? Any one knows something about this?

disagree. This will allow users to share contact info directly from phone to phone. it will also allow you to write to NFC tags which can be very cool. So for example, I have a watch I wear that is a NFC tag with 4k of memory. With the new release I can write change the content of what is on that tag. Right now I keep it as my contact info.
Who said major bugs won't be fixed? Clearly google decided to showcase 2.3.3 because of the NFC thing. Fixed bugs has never been showcased in change logs by google. So there is still hope!!!
I once had the idea of using NFC as input for password, like an electronic key. This will allow greater convenience once device level encryption is supported. I hope this can be realized some day.

Yeah, the idea of true changelogs is apparently alien to Google's Android team.

Hehe they take their cues from Team Douche I'm sure there will be more fixes and alterations than that post implied so I wouldn't be too worried about it not stating specifically what is changing.

The hardware supports it. NFC with a secure element provides a new level of security. Just needs to be implemented in items. they already have house locks and car door locks that use this type of system. Just need PCs to adopt it too.

My understanding is that technology uses RFID not NFC.
Will this install on a stock, rooted ROM on a custom kernel?

[Q] Keyboard shortcuts?

Hi Guys!
I hope this has not been discussed and it's not a dumb question.
I just got my first android phone which is the note3. Ex-apple fanboy and man am I glad I switched!
Dont think I can ever go back to my iphone ever again.
That said, I cant seem to figure out one feature. Is there a way to create keyboard shortcuts? Ie - type omw and the phone will convert that to on my way?
I have looked online and all over in the phone and this is driving me insane!
Thanks again!

I don't actually know if there is a keyboard out there that supports it. SwiftKey doesn't and the Samsung stock doesn't either. Smart keyboard might have this feature, you can try search for it in the playstore. But if it's not that important to you, then I'd suggest to try SwiftKey instead. It's a killer keyboard and I bet it will blow your mind if you're used to Apple's keyboard

thanks for the informative post!
I guess I will have to keep my eye open for something of the sort in the future.
Out of curiousity, I thought I read about some form of screen recording function on the galaxy note, but have no yet found that either.
Is that a feature of the note3 or an app? All I can do is screenshots it seems...

The Note 3 does not have screen recording. It is not limited to hardware though, so it is possible in the future. Screen recording is built in with Android 4.4 and above, so you might see the feature in the upcoming 4.4 update for Note 3. However, it will probably not arrive until January sometime is my guess. It's also worth noting that especially Samsung is known for removing some of Androids core features and add some of their own. Therefore it's not sure that we will get screen recording with 4.4 for Note 3. With that being said, you can download an application that offers screen recording, however that require your phone rooted. Keep in mind that rooting will possibly break your warranty.

Thanks for the info! Rooting Isn't a problem, and I'm ok with the warranty thing. I actually pay a monthly fee for an extended warranty because I drop phones a lot
I wish Samsung would be more like the Nexus series!
Any programs that record the screen that you guys recommend?

I don't know any myself, I just know there are a few in the Play Store. I never had the need for it myself, so I haven't tried them out. I'd recommend searching in the playstore and looking for the most downloaded one as well as the one with most stars.

Disable camera shutter sound

Is anyone who knows how to silent shutter sound?

I googled this when I first got the phone and it seems in Korea they make the phones so you CAN'T disable the shutter sound. (It is illegal)
My work around was to download a silent camera app from the play store for moments when you do not want folks to know you are taking photos. :good:
I rooted mine and changed the shuttersound.ogg to .ogg.bak no more sound.
I think I should root my note..
But I have doubts regarding some "secure" apps could not work cause they chek if the phone is rooted.. I m taljing about bank app, pay tv app (Sky in italy)..
Anyone have a experience with these apps?
Another question, for root permission I understood I have to flash a twrp recovery as well, true?
If one day I want to return "stock", is it sufficient to flash the stock firmware by Odin?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kmshack.mute
I don't know if it works on the new S8 Software, but on my Galaxy S7 with Nougat it works perfectly
In a few days i can test it on my Note FE
Try this!
No need to do any rooting to your Note FE
I live in Korea and there are a lot of application which disable the sound from stock camera.
Copy this word and check it out on ggplay

Read the instructions in the OP here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/note-fe/development/root-note-fe-t3648736. As rooting involves disabling sm-verity, you will not be able to use any app that requires a fully secure device. Remember to backup your device with TWRP before you modify it.
You can flash stock via Odin when you want to return. Bear in mind that you will lose whatever modification(s) you made to disable the shutter sound.

Try out this App. It will automatically disable/enable the system volume if you start/close the Stock camera or other Apps you have selected in the App Settings. You need no root for this App!

Well see like the phone recording laws you have to go and look on a per state basis. Just because it can do something doesnt mean it is legal in all cases. Like many places require that you get peoples permission before taking phones at a public event. It all depends on your state.
Yes it is old. But that is on purpose. It was the basics for anyone that wants to know more to start off on.
Works perfect, nearly lost hope to get rid of that annoying shutter sound.

Yeah this is annoying...
This seems to be a known issue, which I believe is due to depreciated/removed shortcut features.
Haven't gone so far as to look up reasons the new shortcut model or widgets can't be used. However, the moderator from the Samsung forum did give us a shed of hope. At the very least, the software team is aware of our wishes and considering granting them. It's not reimplemented yet, but I'm hopeful!
As a new user I am unable to post links, so here is the https url for the samsung form where a moderator mentions it's a known issue, and oreo change log which mentions dropped shortcut features.
eu.community.samsung.com/t5/Smartphones-Tablets-Wearables/S8-oreo-create-apps-shortcut-from-secure-folder-to-home-screen/td-p/44488

Edit: just realized this is a month old. Sorry for bumping. Read the year and dom and though it was still active. Though, on that note, when do most users consider a thread dead on XDA? Didn't see it mentioned in the rules or a quick scroll through the noob guide.
And it didn't work for chrome shortcut either....
