Note 4 vs Nexus 6... - Nexus 6 General

Thoughts?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2

I have a suspicion that the Note 4 will be easier to use, Samsung invented this market sector and has got very good at producing usable devices for it.

Note 4 is built to be a phablet. N6 is just a big phone with no phablet features

Stock Android > TouchWiz
That was easy
Although to be fair, the Note 4 probably has a much better camera. But TouchWiz.. I'll stick with the Nexus 6.

Agreed ^^ if the note 4 on Verizon had an unlocked boot loader and I could load up Liquid Smooth, AICP or some type of AOSP, I'd take it. No ifs ands or buts.

As said, the Note 4 will perform better as a phablet.

i dont mind the new touchwiz, so note 4 for me.

Even as a big proponent of the stock Android experience and a lover of the biggest screen possible, I'm heavily leaning toward the Note 4. The Nexus 6 is pretty much the same size as my bulky as hell Huawei Ascend Mate 2 (while also stupefyingly being thicker). It's too big. I can deal with all the other Nexus tradeoffs (no microSD slot, no removable battery) but there was no reason that I can surmise to have made a device this big, heavy and thick.

I have a note 3 and a year later the aosp roms are still buggy....any feature the note 4 has that i use the nexus has....had last 2 notes and never use spen...nexus this big is dream come true....hate the ugly look of tw and from what i read samsung made it even harder to theme

As a Note 2 user, I'll be glad to move away from Touchwiz. I have enjoyed my Note 2 but it never did run perfectly on any AOSP or CM rom and I'm really tired of the lag of Touchwiz, though it does okay with a different launcher.
To be fair I never really found the S-Pen useful, and that knocks out one of Note 4's primary advantages for me.

I can't wait for the nexus 6. I have had all the notes, and I like them, but the difference between the 3 and the 4 is marginal for me as i don't really use the s pen or Samsung features that much. I love a big screen and I fancy a change... Especially an unlocked one for basically $200-300 less with fundamentally the same hardware (oh, and stereo speakers).

I also tend to think much of the negativity today has been driven by the surprise price bump. I suspect a lot of negativity will quietly dissolve as the release grows near.

note 4 for me too..if only the nexus would have been made with a aluminum frame, sd slot, removable battery and that thing is as thick as the g3..actually it is thicker

TouchWiz looks ugly and dated. A refresh has been long over due. Why can't Samsung be more like Motorola & add features to a stock ROM to differentiate it self from it's competitors?

To have a Nexus-like device with a removable battery, microSD slot, while being significantly smaller, thinner and lighter?

I don't mind the price. I'm more concerned about the size. I have an HTC One m8 now and its awkward 1 had sometimes. I am the guy that has a ballistics case with the belt clip. So fitting in pocket is OK. Multi screen in stock would be a nice feature. But it's a nexus. So it will come aftermarket. I have never doubted going nexus. I'm thinking about keeping my m8. Someone conceive me to trade up.

AOSP has never worked flawlessly on my Note 2. I have no reason to believe it will work better on Note 4.

Would you switch from Note2 to Nexus4?

I got 30 days with my note2 and i got some decisions to make. Anyone else using the Note2 thinking of getting the Nexus4?

I'm in the same boat. I only have 14 days to make my decision though. I really like the note 2, but I like the idea of not being on contract with T-Mobile hence my conundrum with Nexus 4. What are your thoughts?

I think the note's size is a little much but if moving to the Nexus4 would mean going backwards as far as performance I wouldnt be happy with that either. I may just end up getting the Nexus4 on top lol.
I don't ownt he Note 2 or plan to buy one. Ever. But if I bought one, it would have been because I wanted a screen that size so I wouldn't trade it for the Nexus 4.
I don't think so...
I have AT&T Note ii and I have Nexus 4 16GB on the way. But I am buying Nexus 4 just to see how it is and then give it to my dad in India. There are multiple reasons for sticking with Note ii.
1) Removable MicroSD slot
2) Awesome Battery Life and Removable Battery
3) LTE Speeds (I use team viewer a lot to help my family and friends with their PCs and I am youtube junkie. Also s-pen helps a lot with team viewer and gotomypc apps.)
4) Every custom UI has its drawbacks and its positives. I feel like TouchWiz has improved a lottt and it has amazing new features which I use a lot on Note ii, like smart stay, smart rotation, smart alert, direct call, turn over to mute, palm swipe to capture screen shot and many more...
5) S-Pen is just amazing feature. I love to note down things immediately and also taking notes in the meeting. I love playing draw something too. :silly:
6) Big size and screen is negative for someone, but for me, I just love the big screen. It can be cumbersome to use it with one hand sometimes, but rest of the times while watching youtube videos and pictures and browsing, the experience is just stellar.
I have nexus 7 and I gotta tell you, for my own test, stock android doesn't cut it. I have to do many extra things to customize it. Though, it is just my opinion. Plenty of people love the stock android.
I dont know why people keep comparing them, ones a tablet that makes calls and ones a phone
I sold off my Note 2 to get the Nexus 4.
The size of the Note didn't bother me too much, I was still able to carry/bring it everywhere like a regular phone. The problems I had with it mostly laid with Touchwiz. I've only owned Nexus devices, I've had every single one of them (even if I only kept the Gnex for 6 months. **** verizon). I just really didn't like the looks of it, it's not visually appealing at all. Then we get to the s-pen. It certainly is a cool feature, but I'm no artist, I rarely need to edit spreadsheets on a mobile device. So it was mostly going unused for me. Plus the cost, I would rather pay half the price of the Note to have a device thats still quite high end. The $710 pricetag of the Note (with tax) really put a dent in my fun moneys.
My overall experience with the Note just solidified that I'll likely never own a Samsung cell phone, unless they make another Nexus.

Note II to a Nexus 4 would be a huge downgrade.
Problem with touchwiz? Unlock and install vanilla android on it and problem solved.
I could never give up my Note II the screen size is amazing, camera is amazing and there hasn't been any major issues that I have heard. I think the Nexus as amazing as it is isn't quite at the same level as the Note.

Can you actually do that?! If so, please point at the thread!!!
I wouldn't. The quality of Note 2 is significantly better, components used are better, internal design is better and what you get with Nexus 4 is a slightly faster CPU (which is slower after it throttles down) and official vanilla Android. I mean, it's a great phone for its price that I'm considering getting but it's not as good as the Note 2 overall. If you don't care about timely updates to official Android for the next 2 years or so as much as about hardware quality I'd keep the Note 2.
i have both. the nexus 4 is a solid phone but doesnt compare with the note 2. the note 2 is quicker ( regardless of benchmarks), samsung have done a top job with this version of touchwiz & the screen quality seems more vivid plus the additional size makes everything a pleasure:good:
Not really amused by the Nexus 4, I want a Note 2 now.
I have n4 would rather had note II but didnt have note II money. Nexus is fast. Its one the the best phones out and great price.
I don't want a phablet, I was happy to give up using a stylus once capacitive screens came out and there is no way in hell I'd pay $600 for an android device. N4 is an easy choice and if I already had the Note II I'd sell it, buy a N4 and have $300 ready for next year when the N5 comes out.
600 dollars for a big piece of touchwiz plastic. No thank you. N4 is good for me and then some.
Already have..... I took it back after using it for 10 days, got me 2 nexus and $89 back.
I've been using my Nexus for a day already and I don't miss the note.

Both are good... Depends on what you want. Personally I get bored with the plastic build of Samsung after a while. Only thing you will miss from Note 2 is the awesome camera and bigger battery. Camera is average in Nexus 4. Nexus rules them all with latest software and best xda dev support.

There are cool features from Touchwiz which you may miss. The screenshare to Xbox 360 is pretty freakin cool.
What about the screen size change for you? Seems like most Note2 owner swears they can never downsize to anything smaller after using one. Personally, the biggest reason I'd switch from a Note 2 to a Nexus 4 is for cost savings. As stated, the N4's camera and battery life are certainly mediocre in comparison to the Note 2's.
i had the note 2, and my buddy still has it, which helps or else i would probably remember the note a little better than it actually is, that being said i lke my nexus 4 more, a larger screen is nice but for as long as the resolution is the same i dont mind it being on the smaller screen. and yeah its a little washed out and battery and cam lack, BUT after that i enjoy the feel, the onscreen buttons, jb 4.2, the dev community, Google wallet! and keeping track of less features often makes me use my phone in a more efficient manner, i think googles nexus program is perfect for learning to balance total customization and you 4X4 iphone screen, TW gets a little complicated though i understand it well. also coming from the note i didnt find the N4 to be washed out as much as i thought the note was way too vivid, just my 0.02 both are favs to me
The Note 2 is way more expensive... At least get the 16Gb version

N4 or Note II

I have a chance to exchange my N4 for Note II + $120 C on top of my phone. I don't know what to do. I would really like to have super amoled 5.5" screenn, SD card and stronger battery. The things I don't like is physical buttons, and not a Google phone (updates and freedom of Nexus phones). I have no idea what to do. Should I go for it. What you think? Please give me your opinion.
Do it. Use the $120 towards the N4 8gb.

Decide it for yourself. One thing I hate about the Note(all Sammy devices) is that they get really sticky due to sweat. I have seen my brother's GS3 that it's really sticky to touch. On the other hand, the N4 requires a fragile user. You must have seen the numerous thread about people breaking the phone on the first day. If you are one who drops the phone a lot, then stay away from the N4.
OS side isn't a problem, if you don't mind rooting and modding. Both phones have great dev communities backing it up on the software side.
I highly suggest to try both phones by yourself in a store or some other place and decide it for yourself.
Before I got my Nexus, I was going to get the Note ll. Then I saw it up close, too big to fit in my pockets and a pain to hold. I ended getting the nexus 4, you can't beat it. I ended buying it unlocked because I don't want to sign another contract with ROBBERS. Great specs, great price, timely updates and stock Android.
It falls on the user though. Some people enjoy a huge phablet like a note ll. Depends what you are going to use it for.

I never put my phone in the pants poked anyway. My hands can hold it normally, not to too big. Plastic look is bothering me I have to say that. Compare to N4 look Note II is like a toy. From other side Samsung device like Note II have no others to compare. What else you can take to have super amoled 5.5" screen and similar spec. Nothing really.

I had the original Note and now I have the Nexus 4. The only thing I miss about the Note is the bigger screen. I don't make a lot of calls, my smartphone is more of a mobile computer, so a big screen is desirable.
The reason I switched is because Samsung (as well as most OEMs) do a horrible job of updating their phones. I've had two non-Nexus Android phones, and I hated that every time a new version of Android was released, I had to wait months or a year to get the update, if at all.
Sure there's always CM, but without kernel source, a lot of phones run like crap with CM. I have the HTC Inspire and battery life was awful with CM. I had the Note and it would randomly reboot with CM because the kernel was a hack because no JB source.
For me, features and stability won out over screen size. That being said, if the next Nexus phone is bigger than the N4, I'll be getting it immediately.

I came from the Note n7000 as well. Used my phone in the same manner, as a mini PC. However, I wouldnt go back to the Note. It all depends on your needs for the phone. If you want a better camera and a media device due to the large screen. Then ya. However, if you prefer excellent battery life on a phone with a global community of great developers then stay with the n4.
PS remember Nexus 4 will get updates much faster than the note 2 and you wont get asked/mocked/ridiculed CONSTANTLY about having such a massive phone and explaining to others why you have it.

i gotta say though the note 2 is lacking in the "original development" area. there's lots of ports and touchwiz based roms but for an aosp, there's much to be desired.
cyanogenmod was onboard until relatively recently then it stopped. it's up to a few to really keep it up and so far, it's all been nightlies and no stable releases.
i just gave up my note 2 and had to come back to a nexus 4 because of the lack of support. gs3 or gs4 probably has proper support.
Having both the N4 and the NII I'd say emphatically the Note II is worth it. No picky, fragile sim card tray. No fragile glass back, poor reception, slow mobile data.
The Note II has a 2-3 day battery, gets a signal where the N4 can't, and has a beautiful display.
The best thing about the N4 is the price and it's a Google device. For $120 anybody would be nuts to choose a N4.

Is nexus reception that poor? I need to decide between those two phones. One big drawback for me is mali400 in note 2. I think that adreno 320 is more futureproof. Thank you everyone. I will stay with my N4. I just can not stand physical buttons, cheap plastic and huge price differences. N4 is better device except sd card and smaller screen. The only thing I would like is 5.5" but everything else is step back for me. Not even mentioning the community for N4. So much stuff to choose between. With Note 2 after having N4 I will feel like having old device and stick with what I have. No way, not me...

Yahoo finally note3 which is worth the upgrade

There were some conditions and some limits i have put to get the note 3.
One of it was if its not bigger than 5.8 and i am happy amsung listened instead of going for big bigger and biggest they kept it under 6.0.
Now for those shouting about the finishing they also get something different.

Well it does have 3gb of RAM. Samsung's bloatware can't eat THAT much RAM. This time it seems some of the software are actually useful, like the magazine thing.
Any idea if this will have wireless charging?

Xperia Z1 looks tempting for it's 20.7mp camera, it gets much love from the AOSP crowd and CM, however the screen looks unsaturated and the bezel is huge as Nexus 7. This sure is a tough decision. Note 3 is perfect in every way but freakin' Samsung sources makes flashing to AOSP roms obsolete. There's pro and cons. There really isn't a perfect phone in the market is there?:crying:

Whatever people say, samsung really made android commercial which the htc was unable to do in the past. The initial TW on galaxy S and the note 1 evolved greatly and now bears really capable features. Those who are tired of it can move but those who dont want to root or custom flash their devices can enjoy the stock loaded android with many special features like the multiwindow the scrapbook, new S note and obviously the s pen.
Let others do complains about samsung. I am among those who appreciate their hard work and tribute to them to make my note 1 functional and up to date even after 2 years.

Lollipop is the only reason

I was wondering How many people are buying nexus 6 because of lollipop? I for one am.
Imagine for a moment if Note 4 also came with pure lollipop with no crappy touchwiz which would you buy? I didn't think i would say this but i would buy note 4 and I hate samsung because of plastic and touchwiz.
Galaxy Note 4 hardware wise is far superior in almost every dept, better camera, LED notification, S Pen, better and brighter screen, better design, finger print, sd card.
Speakers would definetly go to Nexus 6 and bigger screen butnot better screen.
Biggest let down on note 4 TOUCHWIZ which is a complete put off.
I've been waiting for nexus 6 for a little while now and have bought Note 4 recently which actually is better then i expected and does look premium and if i was to remove the dreaded TOUCHWIZ it's a very appealing phone. Now i'm considering waiting for custom roms rather then buy nexus 6!!! Or can someone convince me otherwise, perhaps i've missed some nexus pro's.
Aosp roms on the note 3 were not reliable. I expect the same for the note 4.
I've never liked the samsung cameras... my s4 and note 3 had TERRIBLE autofocus. I also didn't like the way it processed pictures. For the most part, I want a decent camera but I dont need an amazing camera.
If software were the same, (no touchwiz), I still think the nexus 6 looks better, has dual front facing speakers, and a larger screen.

hmm..that's a good point But surely lollipop would be fine.
I'm getting one because of the development potential. Also it will be my first nexus (2nd Motorola). Currently am on LG G3. That will now go to the wife, since she loves the camera.

The camera autofocus works brilliantly on the note 4 much improved, it's probably the best phone camera out there. Better then iphone and xperia z3.
I would definitely buy a Note 4 if it didn't have TouchWiz. IMO, TouchWiz is very ugly, cluttered, and drags the performance down to an unacceptable level. I have used every Galaxy S and Note extensively, but I have not bought a phone from Samsung since the S2.

Fair point, LG G3 was one of the most fustrating phones i've had in recent years. Never say never but i won't be buying LG for sometime until the get rid of the ui. Smart move passing it on to your wife.:fingers-crossed:

interesting... maybe im just not a fan of the way samsung processes images but I understand the tech behind the AF system it uses so it should be reallly good. As much as it pains me to say, I have yet to see an android take better pictures than the equivalent iphone of the time.

Having owned iphone 6 plus inmho the camera on Note 4 is superior in most conditions.
I would've definitely bought a Note 4 if Samsung found a way to implement some of their features into Stock Android. They've done a great job with hardware now they need to focus on optimizing software. Samsung is supposedly starting over next year & I look forward to see what the Galaxy S 6 & Note 5 will bring
If you're on VZW there is a Dev edition note 4. I'm sure there will be AOSP Roms available for it soon.

Yes got to give the larger screen and better speakers to Nexus, however most reviewers are saying note 4 screen is sharper and brighter.
Lollipop is definitely the only reason not the phone hardware itself.

I hear you man, i think samsung need to otherwise they risk losing more customers.
Similar hw specs leave me hopeful for increased development and AOSP stability on Note 4.
I would get the N4 solely because the screen quality. It blew me away first time I saw it. Nothing, nothing comes close.
But can't do TW, no no no. That's how much I hate it.

The screen on the note 4 is in another dimension. The best display ever seen on a phone by far.

I was thinking the same thing.
I like some features of TW. But it is overbearing and slows down the device. I was really torn between the two phones. I have always liked the bigger phones. When I heard the new Nexus device was going to be a phablet I was already sold. Love the support the nexus devices get from devs. That's what makes it worth it for me.
