Willie Evangelista - Tips for Sony Xperia Z3 - Xperia Z3 General

1. Importing contacts and email settings
You'll need a Google account to purchase apps from the Google Play app store. Log in and contacts associated with that account will be recognised on the Xperia Z.
2.Manage battery life
The Xperia Z has a gorgeous screen, but it's a battery-zapper. In Settings > Display set the screen to go into Sleep mode after 30 seconds or less. You could also turn off the Bravia screen optimiser and disable the auto-lighting adjustment feature in the Settings > Screen brightness menu. In the Developer options you can also adjust the screen rendering to require less processor power.
3.Manage mobile data settings
For a more stringent battery-saving regime, activate the Stamina mode in the Settings > Power Management options. This will switch off mobile data when the screen is in Sleep mode. As an alternative, low battery mode lets you select whether Bluetooth, mobile connections, Wi-Fi and auto-sync should become inactive when the battery levels drop below 20 per cent. 4.Boost your storage
The Xperia Z has 16GB of internal storage, but you can supplement this with a microSD card. The phone takes up to 32GB microSD cards -- available online for as little as £15 -- taking the total storage to 48GB. Offload photos, files and videos by going to Settings > Storage. Select Transfer to SD card.
5.Setting up your phone as a remote control
The Media Remote app is not installed by default, but there's a link to the Play Store app so you can easily retrieve it. It works with DLNA-compliant devices such as Sony Bravia TVs and Blu-ray players. Use it to switch TV channels, skip through scenes in a Blu-ray film and browse programmes stored on your PVR.

There's so much inaccurate or outdated info in this post, I don't know where to begin...

This information is outdated and seems to be for the xperia Z not Z3.

Small picture size when synchronizing with Windows Media Player

When synchronizing pictures from the PC with the HD2 the images are converted to a very small filesize. When opening those pictures with my HD2 the images appear very small, thus I do not really benefit from the great display and WVGA resolution.
in windows media player, connect your device and go to tools > options > devices and select your device from the list. then click properties and go to the quality tab. uncheck the "Convert music, pictures.." etc.. but make sure the pictures you sync are supported.. size doesn't really seem to matter, it displayes 12mp pictures from my camera with no troubles..

Thanks bel_z_bub. I found that solution already. problem is, that with this you will get pictures in full size on your device / storage card (>4MB in my case). This is also not very good since it is a waste of storage space. There should be a solution that allows me to set the synchronization / conversion to a file size of approx. 500k per picture. This would be sufficient for the screen resolution while at the same time saving considerable storage space.
It's disappointing that MS Media Player does only provide conversion quality options for audio and video. I wonder why they did not implement this function for pictures as well.....?

"Play - My Library" widget missing options

When placing the "Play - My Library" widget on the homescreen, a prompt usually then gives you the choice between five options: My Library, My Books, My Magazines, My Music, and My Movies & TV Shows.
However, since leaving the US, the latter four options have disappeared on both my Nexus 4 and Nexus 7, leaving only My Library. This is unfortunate because I previously used the 2x2 My Music widget (displaying a single album cover art) as a shortcut to the Google Play Music since both the player widget and app icon are so damn ugly.
I cleared the Google Services Framework, disabled Location Access, and restarted the device in Airplane Mode, but it insisted on connecting to a network prior to placing the widget.
I wonder if using a VPN would work but is there any other way? I don't feel like paying a subscription just to place a simple widget.

Apps I disabled at first boot

So, coming from a long tradition of rooting and fiddling around when I first booted the Z3c yesterday I was "impressed" by all the apps that are on the phone that I really, really don't need. Now, since we don't have a way to safely root the device I have deactivated as much as possible.

So, how did you "deactivate" the apps?

You go into apps, then swipe to the right to the "All" tab. Click on the app you want to deactivate and there's a button that says "disable"
3 things:
- I personally always stop the app and clear the data
- Some apps you can not disable, that button is then greyed out.
- Some services might not work if you disable the wrong app, disable only if you are sure that you don't need that app. (might sound logic but I've heard many things in my xda-life..)

Out of curiosity which ones of the ones I deactivated do you use on a regular basis?
Of course, I need a browser, emails and a music player so I have nb pro, cloudmagic and spotify instead of chrome, gmail and walkman.

That was really more of a joke, like how can there be that much to disable and still have stuff left on the phone.. :silly:
But, I use Hangouts, the Xperia FB/Twitter are likely for integrating FB/Twitter into contact list (which I like because it pulls in pictures), gmail, chrome, Walkman (I still buy my music on CDs and rip to FLAC), GP Books (I have a couple magazine subscriptions)... the rest I'm not sure on.
What's the benefit to disabling an app if it's not running in the background? It's still taking up space on /system (not that you could use the space otherwise, unless rooted of course).
Be aware, Disabling Device Administrators triggers (some) Apps to get activated again!
So, just in case you wonder why say Chrome, Google+ etc. came back without you having activated them, please check this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/help/deactivated-apps-getting-activated-t2889082
but if Idon't use those apps they will be running in background taking ram or just take memory from my internal storage?

I get a button that says "Force Stop" but no "Disable"
Edit: looks like some apps have disable and others dont.
Why do some applications automatically load up (IE Google Maps) even when I don't run it?

Because sometimes other apps trigger them to run in the background.

Cool, I added a description in my 1st post.

Just bought an unlocked galaxy S7 Edge to replace my Note 7 I have a few Questions!

Sup XDA,
I jumped the gun to get dat galaxy S7 edge in black onyx, to replace my note 7.
My planned usage:
Used the phone for calling, texting, social media, etc.
-Media consumption using a 1440p screen for youtube, netflix, and some native HDR contant, music using lossless files with poweramp and music streaming with spotify
-Heavy 3D games, emulators, and pokemon Go, etc.
-Using hpc applications, loading compute payloads using otg, gnuroot to run workstation applications (programming, scripts, sensor data, machine vision, etc.); Use for on the go work but mostly a side/independant work
-Using drafting application on native andriod and linux (part of the previous point)
-Used fingerprint and iris scanner, SD card encryption, phone encryption during start up, secure folder, etc.
-Used all samsung features
-Listen to music using a 3.5mm jack at home and bt headphones on the go/gym
-Taking pictures, videos, using slow mo (editing them to)
-etc.
So, to summarize : I love media consumption and media capture with the phone, I use every feature my Note 7 has and I would love to use newer features to. Battery life should be well and I love expandable storage. I use my phone for emulators, Pokemon Go, other high graphic (for a phone that is) game, spotify, data storage and transfer (for my work files and such), and I do use some "High Performance" application on the phone such as Autocad, Matlab , gnuroot Debian and other analysis software and even computing by uploading payloads via usb otg (as a hobby and sometimes to complete work on the go). I also love using root access (but if I can get most root features without rooting the phone it be great). With all that, I also use the phone like any other person such as for social media, phone calls (omg I know ), test messaging etc.
For the future: I would use Android wear/samsung gear s3, wireless charging, etc.
So if I want the best performance should I use smart switch?
Since the phone is directly from Samsung it doesn't have any carrier bloat but are there anythings I should disable? Is it worth getting the package disabler?
Is there any apps I should use to replace the samsung keyboard?
Also does anyone know of a light weight launcher with a dark theme, swipe up for app tray, folder support (either the circular ones from pixel or rounded edges from the grace ux) and have a black google pill?
Anything else I should know?

I love nova launcher and the new gbaord.
but have you bought it yet? because the DAC on this phone is not exactly great. if you love music. if you have hi-fi headphones don't expect much, but I only use Bluetooth headphones with my phone So I don't really care I bought it 20 hours ago So maybe I judged to fast? someone else could confirm this. but mind that al-thought Samsung phones aren't bad. there are a lot of fanboys who would deny anything even if it's true so maybe see for yourself!. (Ehm, it still lags, but come on,it's only a little, it also has purple smearing which is a lot less than old phones but still there. Everyone seems to deny that.),
EDIT: Ouch didn't see that title sorry! I hope you love it. I do despite the flaws! but it's not worth the price tag at all. but I already paid it so what can you do?

Video Files not showing in any player after I used this app

I'm facing this problem when I downloaded Data Sanitizer app from the store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gmail.derry.hussain.datasanitizer&hl=en The app claims to do as what in Windows is "Defrag" or something similar. I tried it, it took around 10 minutes and it showed that it cleared 17GB of data from both my Internal and external memory. After some time when I went to VLC player on my phone, it only showed only videos from WhatsApp, nothing else. Then I headed to file manager and all the files were present but they were not visible in the player. I also tried 2-3 other player such as MX player, BS player, KM player, but all yielded same results. Also, when I copy/download new video to either SD card or Internal, it's also not shown. How do I fix it?
Go to settings - apps - all - Media Storage, then clear data and reboot, then wait a couple of minutes.
There is no such option. There are only two options in 3-dot menu: Show System & Reset app preferences. There is also another icon of settings-style which is "Configure apps" and in that menu too, no such option.
Try to use a data recovery app like Dumpster.
According to the Data Sanitizer app description, "it overwrites the free disk space to insure that no recoverable data is left behind".
Additionally, Android uses the ext4 filesystem (also commonly used on Linux) or f2fs. These filesystems do not require defragmenting like on Windows. To clean your device and save space you can delete cached data (settings > storage > cached data).
Show system, then you will see "Media storage". Then go to Storagex nd clear data, then reboot.
No effect. Still showing the same videos.
Actually, it didn't deleted any data. How can this app be useful?
