Messed up big time - A3000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just bricked my tablet, and I just realized that I haven't made a nandroid backup, which is stupid of me. I no longer have access to my computer, which means I can no longer follow my own tutorial. I have cwm flashed, and I was hoping that someone could post a nandroid backup so that I can flash my tablet back to a functional condition (please, someone). If you want cwm, there's a post by me about it in the general section.

[Q] Stock nandroid

So I have been trollin through a bunch of threads and searching before I ask. I am rooted running Stupidfast v1.23 and jt super clean rom on DI01. I was reading through flashing back to stock package via oden, but i noticed you need a stock nandroid recovery. I currently have CW. Do I need to get the stock nandroid or just flash the package?
If this has been asked a million times, I am sorry. Please direct me where to go.
Anyone?? There has to be an answer out there somewhere...
I believe if you go to the development forum and check the stickies there a post with the Odin to stock info that has the stock nandroid in it. I think that's where it is - I go to so many forums I can never remember where I saw what. I'm on my phone right now but I will check later to make sure.

You don't need a nandroid backup if you just want to go back to stock.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782204
Or, flash adrynalyne's DI01 Odin package to get you back to 2.1-update1.

Stock nandroid is in the dev forum. Probably a few pages in though.
I'm retarded. I meant to say do i need a stock recovery (not stock nandroid) or does the package provide all of it.
A Nandroid backup is just a backup image taken through CW Recovery. You can't have one without the other (at least, not on this phone -- some other devices have different custom recovery tools you can choose to use)
But that doesn't matter anyways, because Odin flashes work regardless of what you have or don't have on your phone. It's like restoring Windows from a recovery disk -- it wipes and replaces everything. That'd be why it's named after a god. Doesn't matter if you're rooted, doesn't matter if you have CWR installed, it'll wipe the slate clean and start you off fresh.
P.S. I'm not sure "trollin" means what you think it means. If you'd gone trolling in a bunch of threads, it's highly unlikely anyone would help you.
Trolls smell bad, live under bridges, and cause hazard to passers thorough. I knew what you meant.
You wanted a stock nandroid recovery. That brings your phone back to before you messed it up. Nandroid is a backup program that is run via Clock Work Recovery (which can be run from recovery mode - to run, flash a special clockwork recovery in odin, install rom manager app, run that, click the install button which in turn downloads and copies an update.zip file to the root of your sd card, then from recovery mode *vol +&- while powering up* you ' install' update.zip which essentially runs it)
You run nandroid from therein... or from the Rom Manager front end.
Actually you would run it, except you cannot.
# Nandroid is a BACKUP program. You need to have made your own image before hand for it to be helpful! #
However, thanks to Adrynalyne, you have another option for restoring your phone to stock:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=867648
A caveat. It is a large file, and somewhat of a strain to host. You only need to use it if your phone is totally borked and you do not know what else to do. Otherwise, you can often repair your woes by opening up CWR and using the clear data commands (which do not touch the sd card) & the install from sd card option, which in turn lets you find a rom you previously installed on your sd card and rerun it. Unless of course you installed voodoo, in which case you need a whole other thread before proceeding....
SIDE NOTE: Here its the classic piecewise restore I used back in the day, which includes stock kernel, stock system rom, and Odin:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782204
Unfortunately the only di01 (first vzw updated modem) posted publicly is the one in the first link. If you need to replace your modem/radio/baseband, then you need to find dj05 separately, or simply have used adrynalyne's restore (linked up top) in the first place.
However, when you do get your phone back to happy - my tired finger asks you to do just one thing:
Run the "Backup Current ROM" option the moment you install Rom Manager - or don't install it!
Swyped w/ XDA App. When in doubt, mumble. Nandroid: Don't use Rom Manager without it.

Can you reverse flashing a recovery image?

Hi Guys,
I'm a little new to all this so please bear with me..
Just rooted my MT4g and want to make a nandroid backup before i do anything. However i see that i need to use CWM to flash a custom recovery image in order to make the backup.
Is there anyway to reverse that recovery image back to stock? Incase i need to revert the phone completely back to stock...
Thanks.
Sorry, i think i found it!
I'm guessing this is it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843289
Please close this thread if that's it.. sorry for spamming.
If you completed the root process then you already have CwM recovery. Just use Rom Manager to make a backup. If you have to revert back to stock the process will reinstall the stock recovery img for you.

Hmm okay. I did successfully root the device and I was following this write up to backup the phone using nandroid which says i need to flash a custom recovery ROM.
I just tried to backup current ROM and it gives me a message saying i must flash CwM recovery first and gives me an option to install it. But i'm guessing it's possible to restore that from the link in my second post?
You can use clockwork to restore your factory rom, but if you want to revert your recovery back to stock you will need to fastboot flash the stock recovery back on. This is assuming you have first flashed the stock rom which will leave you without clockwork rom manager installed. There's a few unroot guides that will help you if you need to send your phone back to tmo. I would suggest becoming familiar with ADB and Fastboot. That knowledge will give you more options in a pinch.
Swyped on my rooted MyTouch4G
Thanks much!
Yes i am doing a lot of reading right now, but wanted to make sure all the files i needed were out there for the MT4G already. Looks like the factory recovery is out there and it can be flashed back so i'm not to worried.

Yes all the files are out there that you would need to pretty much do whatever needed. Check out the links in my sig for some good things.

Naive question: backup complete phone before rooting/flashing?

I'm just starting to read up on how to root and flash my phone and also how to go back to stock if necessary. If you haven't rooted your phone yet, is there any method to fully backup the phone so that returning to stock is easier?
Thanks!
Use the backup function in the recovery or use an app like MyBackUpPro full version.
Questions should go in the questions section.
Backup option in recovery for sure. This backs up your whole phone state. Apps, settings, icons...everything. For an extra safety measure you can use something like Titanium Backup to backup apps and system settings. This is good for switching roms.
you can use the backup from ROM Manager and if you really need to you can always follow the unroot procedure and that gets you back to the out of the box feel
Thank guys. Sorry for posting in the wrong forum, I thought ROM/flashing questions belonged here...
To backup from recovery or ROM manager you need to first flash over the stock recovery image with ClockworkMod Recovery, correct? I was wondering if there's any full backup that will also backup the recovery image prior to doing this, for an easy return to fully stock phone. I'm guessing the answer is no. Correct?
Thanks!

Once you have rooted the phone, and turned s=off you can flash Clockwork Recovery image to do back ups.
IF you are needed to go to a 100% stock fashion for what ever reason. you can do that. All you need to do is download the PD15IMG which can be found in the development section. Store it to the SDcard and boot the phone into boot-loader. That will replace EVERYTHING and put it back to a 100% factory spec. and no they cannot tell it's been rooted once the PD15IMG has been flashed.
Thanks for the info. That about covers it.

[Q] Backup Catch-22?

I've been considering upgrading my A500 to one of the Jelly Bean ROMS. I'm currently running ICS with what I believe is the standard ICS locked bootloader.
My apparent problem is this... I'd like to backup the tablet (nandroid backup) prior to messing around with the new ROMs. If I try to boot into recovery, I either get a picture of a dead android with a red triangle and black exclamation point (with the "Stock 4.0.3" recovery) or a message saying "Recovery verified failed ..." (with CWM rev1.3.4 or CWM rev1.7) as installed by Acer Recovery Installer.
The reading and research I've done implies that I'm getting those messages because my bootloader is locked. So to do a nandroid backup I'm guessing I need to unlock the bootloader. From what I've read, that will wipe the tablet of all the data I'm trying to do the backup of.
Do I understand this correctly or have I got something wrong?

yes u need the unlocked bootloader as described by civato in his bootloader thread.
this has to be done via apx mode either with a manual nvFlash or blackthund3rs apxFlash tool or gersma's afterOTA tool.
These methods will also flash a custom recovery for you as well so u can perform a backup.
All the into u need is in civ's OP with links and guides to the process. The steps must be followed as he has written them...I cannot stress enough how important this is!!
Flashing the unlocked bootloader will NOT wipe yr data, BUT if you do not follow the steps exactly and soft brick then yeh you will lose everything....
You'll also need yr cpuid, see the OP in the cpuid thread in my sig....method no.7 will work for u.
and you will need drivers - all explained in cpuid thread too

You will be safe with your nandroid backup if you follow these steps:
1) do a nandroid backup to a microSD card
2) copy the file that you had backup then save it to your PC
Once complete, you can start tinker with your tablet
I believe it isnt unlocking your boot loader but installing the custom recovery needed to create the nandroid backups that will wipe your tablet. I'm not 100% (it has been a while since I've had to do it for any of my devices) but I seem to remember that being where the wipe happened.
I know this method works with phones so it would be worth seeing if it works for your tablet as well - http://www.thesuperusersguide.com/adb-backup--restore.html

No, you shouldn't loose any data when you update your bootloader or recovery. The ony time bad things happen is when people skip ahead or don't read about how to do it properly... I remember a noob renaming a custom rom to "update.zip" and trying to flash from stock recovery because that's what you were "supposed" to do and couldn't work out why it wasn't working... Apparently they tried this method for a few hours before posting a question about why it wasn't working... They got a bit chewed out over that one...

CWM not restoring backup.

Hy,
I have two i9505, I read a lot and installed CWM using Heimdall, I flashed SuperSU to gain root, and made a backup. It labeled the backup with an outdated 1970 name...
I took the SD card out to copy the SD backup, but could find it even when searching for hidden folder.
I put back the SD card in my device, and booted to CWM, the backup was available for a restore process. So before trying any flash I tried out a restore process, but ended up with a stuck in boot. Boot to CWM and bootloader being still available, I managed to flash a workable ROM, but I can't restore to my initial ROM.
Now, I'd like to be able to restore my device to it's initial ROM.
I believe that somehow, the backup I made is corrupted.
As I have another identical i9505 I haven't tempered with yet, I guess I could install CWM (or other custom recovery) to make a backup of the ROM, extract the backup of the ROM from the SD and use it to 'clone' my second device ROM to this one.
But I don't wan't to make any mistake here, so I'd apreciate some help, first to understand where CWM put the backup .tar.
Another solution is to get some stock ROM I can flash. As anyway I don't have any warranty on the device I don't care to restore to exact initial state, I just want to be able to get back to some stock ROM.
sammobile.com/firmwares is the place to go if you want a stock ROM. Download whichever ROM you want, then use Heimdall to flash it, and you should then be returned to stock. For best results, the ROM you download should have no carrier branding, but any of them should work.
I though I would have to do something like that from reading the unroot guide. Also, as I use Heimdall to flash (I have a linuxBox), I will use this guide in french as a guideline.
I noticed that the command line they recommend don't flash sbl1. I don't know if it is required.
Thank you anyway for confirming that.
