Locked vs Unlocked Bootloader ?

Hi all,
is there any advantages of having a unlocked bootloader over a locked.
Ive had my samsung s4 9505 since launch and i have never upgraded the bootloader. Ive only ever upgraded the gsm modem.
as development has come a long way since launch is there any benefits of having a unlocked bootloader ?
Many thanks

I wish that were true. My bootloader got locked by the 4.3 update, which came through as i was setting up my phone when i first brought it.
Didn't find out about it till i accessed the forums later the same day.

I don't know then as I've had a galaxy s4 since first came out and the galaxy s4 has never had a locked bootloader
The I9500 and I9505 shouldn't have a locked bootloader. Galaxy S4 devices for AT&T and Verizon in the United States however DO lock their bootloaders. Locking, or more accurately, encrypting the bootloader, makes it extremely difficult if not nearly impossible to load custom ROMs. Which is why you don't want one if you can help it.
In the Q&A forum there is a thread where a forum member describes purchasing what was supposed to be an I9505 off eBay. Through some detective work it was discovered that his device was a Frankenstein, in that it had the IMEI of an I9505 but the motherboard and the other components were from an AT&T SGH-I337. Thus, his "I9505" had a locked bootloader. At last report he was going to contact the seller about this. I thought about offering him a straight up swap, since he needed an I9505 and I could use his phone here in the US and get LTE, but the fact the IMEI is not what originally came with the hardware has me pausing.
If you have an I9505 and a locked bootloader, your phone may have been "refurbished" in this manner by a third party. It might be a good idea to check your phone and see what you have.

"Factory Unlocked"

I just received a new in the box Verizon SM-G900V. It came with 6.0.1 DPF4. It was advertised as "Factory Unlocked". How can I tell if it is truly factory unlocked and if it is, can I root it???

Just for clarification purposes, there's a common confusion/misconception regarding the term "Unlocked" being used regarding 2 separate and unrelated areas of a device.
Factory Unlocked (aka Carrier Unlocked) = The devices IMEI (aka Serial Number) is not locked to one carrier and can be used/activated by any carrier that accepts the Verizon GS5 device. Those carriers that are not Verizon typically use the term like the BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone) Program.
Bootloader Unlocked = Is used to describe that a Custom Recovery (ie... TWRP, CWM, etc...) and a Custom ROM (ie... LineageOS, CyanogenMod, etc...) can be installed/flashed in the device.
When it comes to Rooting the device, technically, this can be done whether or not the device is Unlocked but, only as long as there is a way to do it as reflected by one or more thread guides somewhere to guide you through it.
All rooting a device does is provides access to be able to modify the devices Root System files and directories that are otherwise restricted in doing so by the manufacturer.
I hope i had explained this okay via text...
Good Luck!

Thanks for the clarification. I knew what unlocked bootloader was but never owned a "Factory Unlocked" version. From what I understand factory 6.0.1 DPL1 firmware can not be rooted so will have to be satisfied with the phone the way it is.

"Factory unlocked" means nothing for SM-G900V because Verizon does not lock the phones to the network.
DPL1 can be rooted if your phone has CID15 EMMC chip.
Check with EMMC Brickbug Check app (market).
Well, checked and I have the cid 11 emmc ship !!

How do you check the status of the bootloader

This is concerning a moto g5s plus US variant, XT1806 32gb, 3gb ram phone.
2 questions I'm curious about.
1: I rooted this phone about a week after I bought it. I then decided to upgrade phones and am wanting to sell this phone now, but I wanted to lock the bootloader. For about 6 months, no matter WHAT I did, the bootloader just would not lock, regardless of what I did. Not sure why or what happened to make it not lock, so I just gave up until recently.
I decided to break out the phone again and give it one more shot, and to my shock and surprise, I think I finally got it locked. Perhaps I was using the wrong firmware, missing a command or something I'm not sure.
Symptoms I have now are
a: no unlocked bootloader nag screen at bootup and
b: in fastboot mode, it says at the bottom oem_locked
So to the question 1, if it says oem_locked, that is referring to the bootloader as locked, and if it was unlocked, it would say oem_unlocked instead, am I getting that right?
2: I am using firmware labeled as 116-64-11. I know they have different variants, and you should use the coresponding variant number. If I recall right the 64 varient is a global firmware, but will work on all variants of this phone, india and US variants alike.
If I again recall right the US variant number should be 116-45-x, 45 being the US variant. So does anyone know for sure what the corresponding numbers are for each one, and am I correct on my assumption?

Okay so your device is sanders and not potter. This forum is for moto g5 plus not 's'. Post it in the g5s forum and u might get more help. And yes oem_locked is locked bootloader. And u will get the build version in the g5s section. GL.

planning on upgrading from a LG G7 to the 6T question regarding root

I'm on T-Mobile so I'll have the T-Mobile variant I apologize if this question has been asked a million times but from what I've read in other threads its Sim unlocking then requesting an unlock.bin from oneplus then boot loader unlock root with magisk. I also read you could change the firmware to international version and also unlock the bootloader is this without having it Sim unlocked and is there any difference between the T-Mobile rom and the international rom? Again I apologize in advance just trying to figure out everything before I grab the phone next week. I'm upgrading to the 6T solely for root. Thank you for your time.
Edit:Already grabbed it and rooted, loving it so far
T-Mo variant can be flashed to international variant then bootloader unlocked. Then root, etc...
Flash the 9.0.11 OOS Firmware. Do not flash the 9.0.12 firmware because OP closed the loophole.

Ok thank you for the heads up where can I download the firmware
International: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6t/how-to/tool-6t-msmdownloadtool-v4-0-oos-9-0-5-t3867448
T-Mo: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6t/how-to/tool-t-mobile-oneplus-6t-msmdownloadtool-t3868916
I would download the T-Mo ROM to incase you need to switch back.
Follow the instructions in the posts for a hassle free installation. Also, you might want to take a look at this thread if you want to remove the SIM lock: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6t/how-to/guide-sim-unlock-t-mobile-version-type-t3915269
You can unlock your SIM, request a token from OnePlus, and then legit unlock your bootloader on the T-Mo software. I am currently using INT software until my legit unlock token gets here.]Oh and as far as the differences between the two, The INT version does not have Google Feed but it does have advanced reboot menu and a couple other minor things.
Also no T-Mo bloat.
OTher than that they are the same.

s8 from sprinted unlocked for tmobel ? and unlock boot loader

so i live in the us. I was going to get a S8 in a trade im in need of a new phone any more but its sprint and Im on tmobel
what are the chances it has a sim lock i dont think i request for a unlock has been put into sprint.
just buy a sim unlock and Im good to go right? Any problems with the s8 supporting tmoble bans?
What would it take to unlock the boat load and flash a rom. Will the boat loader be able to be unlocked.
I did look this up but im seeing conflicting answers thanks for reading my post.
