State of Jabber/XMPP on WM5/WM6 - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

I just went through 8 hours testing to find a usable jabber/xmpp application. My requirements are that it actually works and that it is capable of auto reconnect. The results are not pretty. I thought I should share them anyway.
pigeon!
latest version: unavailable - website broken
old version: error - network failure unknown (317)
note: most versions you can find online are the RU version
im+
latest version (WAP site): will install - registration will work if you have a valid key, is slow, crashes sometimes
latest version (website): will not install - is standard version so it won't work for pro
latest version (internet search): will not install - just says cannot be installed
old version (mine): error - cannot connect to registration server
beejive: could not activate - unable to get key
bombus (bombus-ng): download link broken
Ebuddy: download link broken
Palringo: requires login account to Palringo thus it is totally insecure and useless
As you can see, there are no Free software XMPP clients available for this God-forsaken OS. The best choice would be the latest IM+ downloaded through WAP if you already have a license or are willing to pay for one. I hope this helps someone so they don't have to go through this like I did.
Edit:
I just wanted to add that I was using an Att Touch Pro 2 (HTC Fortress) with Windows Mobile 6.5.

Wireless Modem (GSM) Problems

I downloaded Othman's updates (RUU 3.16.52, RSU 3.23.01), onto a UK O2 XDA. Also downloaded IR COMM program from http://www.ircomm2k.de set it to COMM 2 where my IR port connects to. Then created a standard 9600bps modem connecting to IRCOMM's virtual COMM port on COM 7, and set the control flow to none. It seems to connect (yellow light shows on WModem app) but doesn't get any further than that. In the modem's properties I did a dianostics test, here are the results.

Has anybody any ideas?
PS Just in case anybody else is trying to connect to the internet on a Irish Vodafone/Eircell ready-to-go account here is some info:
number:0876202222 (cheaper than landline ISPs)
username:vodafone
password:vodafone
Data type: ISDN
Primary DNS: 213.233.128.1
Secondary DNS: 213.233.128.19
SMTP Server:mail.e-merge.ie
Still can't get it working, but here's a PDF I came across that might work for those that have the latest 02 ROM (which doesn't seem to be downloadable for some reason)

Hi,
Please let me know where to find Othman's updates (RUU 3.16.52, RSU 3.23.01).
Thanks.
Surprise when will you annouce it?!
Hi Markh,
Please, can you assist.
I have a german OS and like to change to english.
I have followed your explanation and get always the error message:
"error 007: no rom image file
Cannot find rom image to upgrade your PocketPC
Please download and try again"
I modified the 007 to 001 with hex edit.
Try following the instructions at http://www.markhorgan.com/qtek-rom-update/
I haven't come across your problem before, the only thing I can think of is that windows might be locking the ROM file (NK.nbf), save the file and close HexEdit before you continue the installation process, or RUU 3.16.52 might be corrupted - try downloading it again.
Hi,
I followed the steps discribed on the link ( above ).
Its always giving me this error.
I thought It might be because I have german OS on and try to upgrade with an english version.
I tried the O2 Dutch 3.15.15 from their webpage and the 3.16.52 from markh.
I cross checked this by loading the german 3.14.16.ger from the german O2 page. That worked fine.

Agile Messenger 3.xx : Not true WM5

I downloaded the Agile EXE and installed it on my PPC (specs below) from
http://www.agilemobile.com/downloads.html
NEW Agile Messenger 3 BETA for Windows Mobile 5.0 PPC & Windows PPC 2003 .EXE | CAB
After intial install I get warnings that software designed under previous version, ie 2003.
I set the software to restart after soft resets, but it does not. I installed it on to device memory, if that matters.
Can you concur the same findings or am I doing something wrong.
Mine works fine. I installed mine to my SD Card. Here is the file:
Thanks for help, however you file is the same verson as I downloaded and problems persist.
Mine works properly. All I did was plug-in the necessary information and passwords, and I was able to view my Hotmail and Yahoo accounts. I also have Net Framework 2 installed. I don't know if that matters.
NO PUSH TO TALK!!!
I've installed the new Beta3 on 2 different devices so far, the play all Voice Messages Automatically option is there but the Assign PTT Buttopn option is no longer in the newest version. Just an FYI. Seems they might be close to final which they intend to charge for (i.e. the missing killer feature).

Windows Live Problems

Hi guys, I installed the Windows Live Package from http://www.live-messenger.nl/download/WindowsLive.PPC2005_ARM.CAB. It worked perfect, now i wanted to know how much memory this app costed, so i uninstalled it again. But when i tried to install it again, it failed When i open the cab, it loads approx. 5 seconds in the installer, then the installer says Installation of WindowsLive.PPC2005_ARM.CAB has failed Anybody suggestions how i can get this work??
p.s. Without a hard reset
I have also done the same thing and get the same error. I had to uninstall Windows Live Mobile because I was getting an error everytime I tried to launch Live Messenger. Now I can't re-install it again.
I have 2 main ideas:
1st.: Microsoft is cutting the service from these "un-official" releases of their software, as they are trying now to sell Windows Mobile 6 and Windows Live can't be downloaded or installed let's say "legally".
2nd. (which doesn't affect the first one): Microsoft recognizes the WLM software as not pre-installed or being installed on a Windows Mobile 5 device and tells the client to get "blocked", I mean, it writes some values to the registry and prevents being launched or installed again showing the empty error message I had before unistalling it.
Someone can verify any of my ideas or bring a solution to have WLM working again on our WM5 devices?
Thanks in advance.
Romero i've found the problem! I got my hands on an UNdated UNrestricted version. As you said mic. just cut the WLM off. I do not knowe why but here is the fix http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=36364&d=1175459584

neither of those are correct, the reason is thats its a beta and expired at the beginning of the month. therefore you cant run the program or install it. just get a new beta version by signing up to Microsoft Connect or use the older version thats been extracted from wm6 thats floating around here.
Try it, like the worker:
WindowsLive.PocketPC_50_arm.cab
Thank you very much ASerg!
The version The Dutchman posted was in English, but I find out that the Aserg's file was several kB bigger... That made me think and decided to install this bigger one and finally got Windows Live Mobile working in Spanish, just like before my beta had expired.
So thank you again guys!

Java on Typhoon

As my MDA (HTC Wizard) stopped working (looking for a new phone to replace it--perhaps the IPAQ 910), in the meantime I've gone back to my prior phone, the Audiovox SMT-5600, which is the HTC Typhoon, running WM 2003 Smartphone. I'm on the T-Mobile (USA) network.
So, until I get a new phone, I'm trying to configure my Typhoon to work better for me
The SMT-5600 comes with the Tao Intent JVM. I was able to install the new Opera Mini with it. However, I'm not able to do with it any of the hacks I've read about here--like making a shortcut to go right to OM (without the Java screen first), and to eliminate the screen asking permission to connect to the internet. (I guess most of those hacks are for JBED.)
Also, I cannot install either the Gmail app, or the Google Maps (Java version) with the TAO JVM. When I go to the m.google.com site, and download the gmaps.jad, i end up getting an error message from Tao, about not being able to install it. (OT-I also tried installing the WM version of Google Maps, and that wouldn't install on the SMT-5600 either. Perhaps it is only for WM5 and later.)
Anyhow, I am wondering if any alternative JVMs (to the TAO) exist, that will work on this phone? (Menneisys, are you reading?) I tried a few JBED versions downloaded from this site, and haven't yet found one that will install on the Typhoon.
I do have the IBM J9 installed, from years ago, when I originally used the phone. But I have not been able to get it to work successfully. (I have it installed to storage card, and don't know if that is a problem. It is large though, and no room to install in internal memory.)
Anyhow, any JBED versions that will work on this phone (with WM2003), or any that would work better than the TAO?

[Working] OpenVPN TD2

Hi,
I hope that is going to the right forum. Otherwise apologize, and with the help of moderators should go on the right place.
After long trying period succeeded to install and (this was the hard part...) to make use of OpenVpn on my Diamond2.
Working constelation:
1. ROM of TD2 is official Vodafone-German: 2.16.162.3 (67041)
2. Main Gateway - openvpn server - is a Speedport w701v (should work with any openvpn server flavour with version > 2.0.5, including windows servers)
3. You need to install the openvpn for PPC version 2.0.5 (version 2.1.0 failed to be usable on the device) from the ziggurat29 dot com website.
4. Deploy the configuration files for the server and the client (in my case HTC TD2) - please do not ask me how, there are 1000 of sites full of configs
5. Disable (this is not so nice, but the openvpn is built on old PPC GUI) as shown on the untangle forum for the link to video how to connect - a video flash link on that forum). The video is showing as well how to connect from the GUI.
!!! ATTENTION !!!: USE VERSION 2.0.5 AND NOT 2.1.0 CABS ON THE TD2(the version 2.1.0 will not be able to bring up the TAP interface).
Notes:
1. On the communication was using "dev tap" and tcp - no idea if dev tun works.
2. VPN was established successfully on WiFi and as well on the Cellular Data Connection (depending on your provider, you may have issue on the Data Connection)
I am happy if this posts will help some other people and saved some time for them...
/Tolum
P.S. Sorry for not being able to add the external links, but these are the rules for the beginners.
