128GB microSD card on XPERIA PLAY - Xperia Play General

Hi,
anyone tested this card on XPERIA PLAY?
Is it working?
Rgds,
DocMAX

Pretty sure the Xperia play can only support up to 32GB since it's 2011.

i have heard other things

Before moving to a nexus 5 I used a 64gb card with zero issues for almost 2 years. You have to format it in your PC as fat32. Works great after that.
I don't see how a 128gb card wouldn't work. Also if you google searched XDA xperia play 128 about two years ago someone hacked a 128 SD card to work and it did.

ok. can anyone confirm a 128gb card?

Simple google search
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2188100

i did. couldnt find anything

Should work no problem. Using a 64gb sd card now (also used 4 about 2 years) an no problems whatsoever

I believe you can support the card if you partition it to smaller 64 or 32gb partitions

Use ntfs moubter from android market. It will mount anything no matter the size even 1tb. Also your sd will not wear out. Ive found they wear premature if over 32gb and formatted to fat32. Ntfs mounter will mount sd cards as per usual so just slap it in allow root and away you go.

Yes, they work fine so long as you wipe the default exFAT partition cards of these size ship with from the factory and make a FAT32 partition.
Linux users can do this with no problem using something like (G)Parted or fdisk, while Windows users will need a third party program to overcome the artificial 32GB FAT32 limit imposed by Windows. Minitool Partition Wizard Home is good for this purpose, and free.

[REQ] exFAT/microSDXC support

I've had my SGS2 for almost 4 months now, running KE7 firmware. Within the next few hours, I'll be getting the SanDisk 64GB microSDXC card, and I'd like to use it in my SGS2.
Based on my reading of other threads in this forum relating to microSDXC support, it's my understanding that the SGS2 hardware will support this card, but that software support will be required to handle the exFAT filesystem, which is the standard format for microSDXC cards.
To determine if exFAT support existed, I did a test last night, formatting a known-good 16GB microSDHC with exFAT and mounting it on my SGS2. However, when the phone powered up and scanned the card for media, it reported that the card couldn't be read and offered me the option of formatting it with FAT32. That suggests to me that the firmware expects micro SD cards to be formatted only as FAT32.
Again, from reading other threads on the forum, mostly related to NTFS support, it sounds like it should be possible to modify the firmware to support exFAT-formatted microSD cards. So I have two questions/requests:
Does a custom firmware package supporting the exFAT filesystem for microSD cards already exist?
If not, would one of the devs like to take a shot at making one?
If this mod hasn't already been made, I'd be more than willing to assist the devs in any way I can. I've been a software developer for almost 25 years, but almost all of my experience is in Windows, and is pretty much evenly split between user & kernel mode, so I know a thing or two about filesystems & drivers.
The last time I did anything in the Unix kernel was back in the days of AT&T SVR4 and SunOS, when Linus was just beginning to develop the Linux kernel. So doing this myself is a bit of a stretch, which is why I'm asking for help from the dev community.
Any help I get would be greatly appreciated.
You would need to grab the kernel source, from samsung or a custom kernel, then build it with fuse support and the correct file system module, or just with extfat support if fuse doesn't have the correct module, the cm7 wiki has a good guide to building kernels then combining them with a ramdisk.
You would need to use a ramdisk from a stock kernel for it to work with stock roms.

Easy for you to say -- my last Unix experience was 20 years ago.
Anyway, I just took delivery on the card. When I stuck it in the SGS2, it offered to reformat it as FAT32, which I did. Once formatted as FAT32, the card appears to work pretty well. SDTools gives read/write speeds of 18 MB/s and 6.6 MB/s respectively; that suggests that the SGS2 is the roadblock, since the card is supposed to handle 30 MB/s reads.
Still, it'd be nice to have exFAT support, so we can use the microSDXC cards as they come from the factory, and to allow for file sizes > 4GB for DVD/BluRay rips and other HD video formats.
Haha, it's easy to say but it's not that easy unless you are experienced in this kinda stuff.
I couldn't easily do it myself or i would

do you wanna say that microSDXC already supported by stock SGSII kernel?
How much free space on this card SGSII shows after format to FAT32?
In stock ROM SGSII supports up to 32GB SDHC, it won't support 64GB SDXC cards, regardless the file system format.
MicroSDXC is working on my SGS2. I've been running the SanDisk 64GB microSDXC in my phone all day. I had to reformat it to FAT32, but it's working fine.
The card shows up as having a capacity of 59.46 GB, and SDTools shows read/write speeds of 18.0 MB/s and 6.6 MB/s respectively. I've played both MP3 and videos off the card, without any problems.
I'll beat on it some more over the weekend, but all signs seem to indicate that microSDXC works as long as you reformat it to use the FAT32 filesystem.
read/write speeds of 18.0 MB/s and 6.6 MB/s respectively

For a class 6 card its normal , read is very good actually close to class 10. My 32GB class 10 Adata Reads 21.3 MB/s Write 15.5 MB/s.
That claim of 30MB/s might be with exFAT or plain BS marketing claims. Anyways i ordered one also 64GB is god send for media storage.
Ordered mine too, will post feedback when I get it (although hopefully loads of other people will have confirmed by then too).
Where did you order?

Right now, they're available only from the SanDisk online store on their company website. I'd expect them to show up at other online retailers in the next few weeks, if you're willing to wait.

64GB HD2 Windows Phone 7

I had a SanDisk 64GB Mobile Ultra MicroSDXC Class 6 card and I wondered if my Mango-tized HD2 would even recognize it.
It certainly appears to. I dunno, but that seems like news.

Id say thats news given that 64GB Micro SDs didnt exist when our HD2 was born.
To be honest, i dunno what id use that much space for, i dont think id ever fill a 32GB SD let alone that monster!
There was a time when id have dual booted android, but i cant be bothered with all that now WP is pretty much perfect on the HD2,
Hi.... Just wondering... Did you experience any change in battery drain and smooth running of the rom after installing 64gig sd card ,
And which rom unr using currently...
This is epic for someone like me! I'm one of those people that fills up 16 gigs in no time flat! 32 sounds nice, but 64 gigs!!!! I'm in heaven, I need to get one. How much did the 64gb card cost you?
Any updates on whether this works yet? I would like to upgrade from 32Gb soon.

wow. amazing. does it mean that hd2 supports part of SDXC? can you use all of the storage volume;about 59GB?
I have mine split, but yes if you so choose, you can use all of the storage on the sd card, currently i have Everything working on the phone, running really smooth, only thing is that my carrier signal/reception is good, but for some reason the radio on this rom seems weaker than normal, Question for anyone that knows, is there a better one ready yet, I am on Orange.

THing with Radios is that firstly we have 2 different radios to deal with, and secondly different networks and signal strength areas will do better with different radios, so you may find that the latest and greatest radio is actually worse than the first radio available because its been stripped from a phone on say, the O2 network.
Trial and error appears to be the best, or ask folk on your network what they use, ideally in your own country and even better near you,

According to the SETTINGS|about page, I have 59.25GB Total Storage.
Battery life is not stellar, though I haven't really done any work to optimize that.
SDXC
Basically... All SDXC cards will work...
The thing is, this is how the cards are supposed to be shipped:
SD => FAT
SDHC => FAT32
SDXC => exFAT
Any SDXC card can be formatted as FAT32 to work with SDHC compatible devices. The OS "decides" how much of the storage capacity can actually be allocated.
Since microsoft probably took note of SDXC during development, windows phone uses a file format that either supports exFAT (which is a MS file format) or formats the cards in a file system that supports over 64gigs. Windows phone supports SD cards under 32 gig, so it supports FAT32 and FAT anyways (to be reformatted in the device)
Long story short, as soon as a device supports exFAT it is SDXC compatible. if a device supports FAT32, any SD card formatted in FAT32 works.
Will the 64GB SDXC card work with the original Windows Mobile 6.5 ?
Does exFAT work on WM6.5?
Wohooooo 64 Gb for what?
Yep got a dual booting 64gb SanDisk class 6 over here.

30.5 in android

Seeing as how Windows Phones uses the partition type exFAT, it'd be no problem picking up the 64Gb card since that is what it is formatted as.

In regards to the SanDisk Ultra 64GB SDXC...over the last couple of days I installed the NexusHD2 v2.3 and set the card up with 8GB EXT4 and 52GB FAT32. It ran slightly slower than NAND but I adjusted the CPU speed to compensate and overall a darn good experience. My next adventure was to dual boot both NexusHD2 and Pdaimatejam's WP7.8 and I split the card pretty much right down the middle taken into account the 200MB FAT32 WP7.8 creates upon it being deleted and for one brief moment you have only 2 partitions before continuing to create the EXT4 partition. WP7.8 will works up to a point and then begins the reboot loop. I understand there's a way to image a smaller memory card onto the 64 gig card and that's what I will be doing next. In the meanwhile I did successfully load Pdaimatejam's ROM into NAND but the key here is that card must be formatted as exFAT; otherwise it too will reboot endlessly. My only use for Android are CoPilot Navigation and Google Navigation and Skype; otherwise I prefer Windows Phone for one reason and one only; it runs as smooth as silk but WP7.8 lacks what WP8.x now haves...good GPS Navs, what my Titans and HD2 have is customization and that is a sticking point for me in regards to upgrading to the Lumia 92x series.

That's strange, is there big difference between supporting 32gb and 64gb? I would have thought that when in development they would have made sure it supported the largest microsd on the market. 64gb (59) would be nice to have.
well, i googled, thanks for making me second-guess myself. here's your answer.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/acer-iconia-a500/141186-64gb-external-microsd-card.html
Yep. Others here have said that it works. It just won't work with FAT due to the limits of the FS. FAT32 or NTFS will work.
Guys,
I have used this SD card for months and it works like a champ. All I had to do was to format the SD in another device since the A500 has no provision for formatting a SD card. I formatted mine in my Galaxy S II, Epic 4G Touch(my first 64G SD Card went in this device anyway). Since then neither device has skipped a beat. The SD cards are expensive though. So be very careful taking them out of your device. ALWAYS unmount it or Eject it within file mgr before removing it. Also handle with care. More questions? Just ask...
Update: That's right! You don't have to unmount or eject it after use in the A500. As a matter of fact there's NO option to do so... But if you use it in another device you may need to unmount or eject it.
Just to add to the information given, a few weeks ago I bought from Woot a "Centon 64Gb Class 10" SDXC card (not micro...full size) for $55 and am using it happily with my A500. I use it with a Targus USB card reader and attach it to the full size USB port on the A500. The only snag which occurred originally was that I used "SD's" own application to format it and it would only format in "Ext", this turned out to be unreadable by the A500 but I resolved the problem by formatting the card in Windows as Fat32. This now works fine and given the size you can put on as many movies as you wish.
Just to add to what ojones838 said above.....Generally speaking the A500 will automatically mount external SD storage or USB storage as soon as it is plugged in (at least this is true of my ICS rom) but it's wise to "Unmount" the storage media before removing it.
Just for future reference, the hardware and software limitations for size are 32GB (FAT and SDHC) and 2TB (SDXC). Nothing in-between those.
Just picked one of these up from eBay. Thanks for pointing these out and the details on how to format and use it on the A500 !
FYI - Just ran SD Card Tester on it and it ran at 5.91MB/s Write and 9.19MB/s Read. So inline with expectations for a class 6 card.
@saeba.....Glad the card works for you, as I said above with that amount of usable space you can put as many movies (including large size blu-ray's) as you want. Certainly enough to keep me happy on my transatlantic flights!
Thanks for the info re the speed test, class 6 seemed to me about right.....have learn't to take maker's claims about speed with a grain of salt.

Swap ExternalSd to internalSd app should be made and released by Samsung

I think an app to swap external sdcard to internal sd card should be made and released for free by Samsung itself considering 64Gb class 10 internal memory is a deal maker! Listen to your users needs who always used to buy your flagship phones Samsung. The only software programmers who have full access to external sdcard controls which is currently restricted by other programmers are employed by Samsung. So I believe it's your duty to put it in your next rom update. Any users think alike please show your mind and keep this thread alive.

samsung will never do that ....how will they sell there 16gb or 32gb models when you got this app ....its all about the money in the end
You have a point. But they should at least set the storage codes free so we can have 3rd party apps for that. As far as I know it's only Samsung devices on the market to see internal memory as sdcard and android system doesn't accept moving apps to second external sd card so we can't use our high end devices efficiently just because Samsung doesn't allow us to swap sdcards. How cool is that?

Not true.
Pretty much any device that originally came with Honeycomb or later is much the same, with additional internal storage partioned so that it looks like an SD card when it isn't.

So we need a kernel which doesn't map the internal memory as SD, but as internal memory?
That way we still have a possibility to insert an SDcard and see it as SDcard instead of /Storage/ExtSDcard.
I think I would not have bought this device when knew the usable memory was so limited to only about 10Gb!

[Q] Note 3 Not Reading New SDHC Card ...

I was excited to receive the 64 GB Micro SDHC card (Samsung microSDXC UHS-I Card Pro) for my Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Now very disappointed ... I put the card in my iBook G4, but it would not read it. Option to Eject or Format, so I tried formatting Mac OS. Phone would NOT read card. Then formatted DOS. Phone still will not read card.
Last, my Note 3 formatted the card, but now my Mac will not read the card!!! The only way that I can load files onto the card is from my iBook. ALL, yes every single one, of my other SD and SDHC cards are readable with my Samsung Galaxy Note 3, so I can load files onto the phone.
Is there a Hidden Secret to getting this card to work with my Samsung Galaxy Note 3, or is the card simply defective?
-- Jim ....
I think that the problem is mac OS and not the note3, because it read correctly the content of micro sdhc card.
What version of Mac osx do you have ?
Have you tried to view the micro SD in a windows o.s.?

So let me get this straight:
1, You placed card in your G4, but does not read and only gives you the option to Eject or Format.
2, You formatted the card in Mac OS (Extended) (I assume from what you're saying) which didn't work and the phone was still unable to read it.
3. You tried the DOS format, the phone will still not read the card.
4. You formatted the card in your phone but the Mac doesn't read it.
I noticed you formatted the card in Mac OS (Extended) format, which is Mac's own file format. Have you tried formatting in FAT32? That's usually the most chosen file format for SD cards. The only limitation is the 4GB file limit.

They have no clue what they're talking about. I've seen many people saying they're running class 10 cards flawlessly. And with such a relatively new device, not supporting class 10 would be an absolute idiotic move.
That is total nonsense, class 6 card will have a problem record even HD video, not to mention 4k video, I have 32 GB class 10card and works fine, I saw many people using fastest cards available without a problem, in other words Note 3 works fine with class 10 cards. You already have an answer, your problem is your proprietary MAC and since Apple's iphones and ipods don't support SD card, you may be up the creek without a paddle. I wonder if your Note 3 didn't format the card as ExFat, it was recommended to me, since it does support over 4GB file limit and it works better in large cards. I'm sure you could transfer files using Apple's approved way, using Cloud and maybe itunes.
When samsung say class 10 is not supported is it class 10 64gb not supported maybe. Considering my 32gb class 10 works a treat

The card might still be defective but I seriously doubt that (since the Note 3 can format it just fine; also there are about a million users of 64GB cards on Samsung phones and those tend to work OK).
Your problem (other than not really reading stuff on your own - for instance you missed on how Questions should NOT go in General forum) seems to be more with using a pretty closed ecosystem (Apple) and some not very fresh versions of it
The short version is that SD cards over 32GB have as standard format exFAT (a format that for instance has the large advantage over FAT32 that can use files bigger than 2 GB). That format is not well supported on older OS versions - which explains why you can't see it on your PCs.

Your main problem is your mac G4... It probably has no support for extfat (file system used by default on a 64GB card)... And probably no correct support for sdxc cards.

thats a bit of a generalization mac os is and isn't his problem it is because he is using a very old version on his g4 mac however as most people will not have that version any modern version of mac os from 10.6 onwards will work and allow formatting in exfat
also to all the other posters who call mac os a closed ecosystem and generally dismiss out of hand mac os where is it anymore closed than microsoft systems ??
i can and do run both os on a cpl of mac pros (mac/win) and a cpl of intel pcs (win/mac) .......my os of choice however is mac
to transfer files on mac os use android file transfer ...however this will not work on non intel macs
Well, you can run Windows on your Mac, no Windows computer can run Mac OS and it's not for any particular technical reason, but because it's locked to hardware, so yeah, Windows is open and mac is locked OS, no matter how you look at it. And generalization or not HIS MAC IS THE PROBLEM, not Note3, regardless of the reason.
