I just recently found out about NFC tags and I'm wondering what brand I should buy, and what chip I should get for the Note 4. Any information is appreciated.

All NFC tag will work with NFC enabled smartphones (like Note4)
For example you can buy Sony Smart-Tags & Manage its tag with Smart Connect App
the thing is you need nfc tag & an app that manage tasks

Not quite. I can't say for other brands, but the original Samsung NFC tags worked with the Note 2 but the Note 3 required NFC 2 tags. Hopefully they will still work with the Note 4.

I had the same question about NFC tags when I had my S4. The biggest factor I found out was whether the tag is compatible with NFC Forum protocols. The older Mifare Classics tags are super cheap but aren't always compatible (they weren't with my S4.) You'll want to buy tags that are compatible with NFC Forum protocols, such as the NTAG203 or the Topaz 512.
We'll know for sure what tags are compatible once the phone is out. I've got a pile of NTAG203's laying around so I'll be ready to test those.

Thanks for the information, I did not know I needed to download an app and I hope the NTAG203s work with the Note 4.
Now that the phone has been out a few weeks, has anyone expirimented to see which tags work? I want to pick some up and play with some NFC commands, but not sure which type to get.
I have used tags for a while.
I have just tried my note 4 on the tags I have programmed and worked on 3 different devices, S3, M8 and nexus 7, however with the note4 I get a compatibility error 'unknown tag type'
I even tried some fresh tags I have never programmed and got the same error.
The problem is I cannot remember what type of tags they were as I have had them for a while. I think they were milfaire......
I am also just starting to research and play around with the NFC technology. I am hoping it is a little more reliable that Llama was with geofencing or Wifi detection to change phone states/settings.

These are both "type 2" NFC chips. Depending on what you want to do, any Type 2 chip should easily store settings changes. If you want to store a lot of data or use fields, like with a business card, then you'll probably need to go to a type 4 chip.

I ordered some Topaz512 chips to experiment with and received them yesterday. I can confirm that the Topaz512 do work with Note 4.

soooooo nope they don't work,I had a Note 3 and the tags I used do not work on the note 4, confirmed by Samsung Canada..you need the Samsung tactile 2..can't find them anywhere..soooo I only use NFC to communicate between my old note 3 (given to the misses) and my note 4...and I thought only Apple did the scam to change everything a bit so you'd have to buy everything again...

So I bought the Topaz 512 chips and I am having issues with them being read by my Galaxy Note 4 Edge. There wouldn't be a difference with the Note 4 and Note 4 edge would there? My phone does end up reading them but it takes multiple taps- like 6 or seven before it reads it. Does not really save any time, I usually just give up and do the NFC task manually. I do not know if I am doing something wrong or what. Anyone else experiencing this? My first thought is that I have Tasker, NFC Tools and an app called MyLog that all can write to tags, could it be that the phone doesnt know what to use? I never have any issue with Tap and Pay. Any suggestions?

If playing an Online game, you may encounter and NPC (Non-Player Character).
I think you might be referring to NFC (Near Field Communication) is what I think that stands for. It among other things, allows you to use Google Wallet (if compatible) to use your device to pay at retailers that have NFC compatible payment systems.
You wave your device over their device and done..
This also allows for other interesting interactions between your phone and NFC tags.

It also has to do with android beam which allows you to "beam" things like apps and web pages over to other nfc enabled android devices with android 4.x

I'm seeing the ability to share pics and videos in the specs.
We can't currently do it with our Galaxy Nexus to and from the SGS III (and I haven't been able to test it with any other devices) so is there something new in Android Beam coming with the Nexus 4?
In other words, can we get some wifi direct lovin?!

My guess is (I have experienced the same thing) that the S3 is not capable of reviecing so large files via NFC.
and my simple guess is that if the S3 would have CyanogenMOD or something else it would work..
Shame since I have so many more friends with SGSIIIs than GNexii ... I actually don't know anyone with a GNex here where I live but I have three good pals with SGSIIIs.
Where exactly have you seen the sharing in specs (was it just in soecs or mentioned as well?)

The Galaxy Nexus can send pictures via NFC. I tried it out with my Sprint Galaxy Nexus & GSM Galaxy Nexus. It'll take a while, but NFC picture transfers do work (I haven't tried videos though).

I think it is the same old Android Beam though I was hoping it was something newer that would allow sharing with the GSIII. Good old proprietary Samsung. Google should have asked that NFC sharing was more standardized but true to Android platform tenets, Samsung went and made it better. Can't really blame them.
NFC only send very small data packets (~20kb). When it "shares over NFC", what they mean is the NFC initiates a Bluetooth connection, and sends the file via that.
I really feel sorry for myself for believing in those Sam****'s commercials. I need to stop believing in them real quick.

They (SGSIIIs) do everything they say in the commercials ... This is about the Nexus line and how it needs to get on the WiFi direct bandwagon or make it optional so that we Nexus folks can send large files with all NFC enabled devices--particularly the SGS III, which happens to be the most popular.
If the Nexus 4 somehow does this, I'd definitely go pick one up. That's why I want to know what's up with them.

We'll I have a Nexus 4, and attempted to send a small photo I grabbed from the internet to my brother-in-law's Galaxy Note 2, and both phones respond to the NFC detection. My phone says "Touch to Beam", and I tap the screen, and the Galaxy Note 2 says "Incoming beam.." But after 10 to 15 secs, says "Incoming beam failed".
I tried it with my wife's phone (SG3), and the same problem happened. This is very disheartening.. Don't get me wrong, the Nexus 4 rocks, love how smooth, and clean the O/S. Just the fact that I can't take advantage of Android Beaming to another Android device sucks at the moment. Knowing the SG3 is almost everywhere now.

So it looks like either S-Beam won't play nice with non-Galaxy S devices and/or the Nexus 4 doesn't use WiFi direct to actually send the file like S-Beam does.

You know I've been playing around with NFC and Android Beam the past few days too and I'll share some of my results.
I've been able to "beam" links, youtube videos, and a picture. The devices I have available to try were my Nexus 4, a Galaxy Nexus (running 4.2 stock), and a Nexus S (running CM10 stable). All worked like it was supposed to. I did try to send a song to my brother's Nexus S, but it did the "Incoming beam..." thing that JayCapo pointed out. It eventually opened Google Music, but it never transferred.
Dunno, yet. Will try more and different scenarios.
I've only tried using Android Beam to receive a photo, which works fine, and that's with another Nexus4 device.
As for wifi direct, the option is there, but I've not tried it yet.
In the wifi settings page, press the menu (three dots?) in the bottom right and select wifi direct.

Eeeek WiFi direct just kind of sits there not doing anything. I can connect to devices but the option to share doesn't seem to show up in the gallery or anywhere else. That's for another thread.

All nfc tags should work. It's not a device specific standard. All tags are universal as long as your device supports nfc.

I believe they are all 13.56MHz that will work. 125KHz I know will not.
To anyone finding this thread, what was said above is wrong.
Mifare classic 1k tags, the most common tags, won't work with Nexus 4 (I verified it for myself after ordering some).

Android Beam works fine between my Nexus 10 and my One X. I'm using Cyanogenmod 10 nightlies on the One X, but I am unable to read any of my 3 different NFC tags using any app on the Market on either device. I used to install RFID card readers for ADT, so I'm not exactly new to the notion of how to swipe a card, but for whatever reason, I cannot read any of these door/ID cards from 3 completely different sources.
I use NFC tag writer to read and write my tags. Its on the market.

I'm sorry...I had an illiterate moment & missed that you wanted to read existing cards. I vaguely remember reading something about it in the GNexus forums a while back. Seems like there isn't much out there for reading tags. If your dream is to duplicate the tags & use your tablet to open doors, the answer was no for now. I gotta go deal with my kids, so I don't have time to hunt down the thread, but it is in the GNexus probably 2 months ago.
There are tons of apps out there for reading NFC Tags, not many for reading secure cards , like security badges.
Although some of the RFID and NFC spec does overlap, you are not able to read encrypted cards ...
But you can read and write your own tags or read public tags, like on some movie posters and promotional material ..
Why change it? Just rendered 20 tags useless to me.
Is this going to be an ongoing thing with NFC technology? is this a once off change? Why the HELL are these things not backwards compatible (the chips, not the tags!)
Where can I find 1kb tags for the S4 at a reasonable price and what model # are they?

That's still plenty of space. There are MILFARE nfc chips, but if you read the description are not working with S4, neither Nexus. I'm sure there are no alternatives yet.

apparently the old tags were not spec compliant and not supported by other NFC readers.
The old tags were proprietary and Samsung switched to non-proprietary standard tags.
Still raises the question of why they didn't use the standard tags in the first place

I picked up 10 on amazon for $8.49 NFCguize I believe are the brand
The only time you should need more than even a 100 bytes in my experience is if you are storing data on the tag. Such as encoding "Here is a three thousand character long string" on the tag, as opposed to using something like NFC Task Launcher for automata of things like Wi-Fi/Car Mode/whatever. In which case it's just a waste of money.

I dont believe these new tags have that kind of storage(and its not needed btw)...and i think they wont be changing the tech now..at least not in near future..now the chip is compatible with the nfc standards..that s why the change was made..
